If you feel bad that Johnny and Celia couldn’t have kids of their own in the book, mini ends up leaving her nieces husband, Leroy and because Celia and Johnny’s property is so big she ends up, moving her and her kids in with Celia and Johnny so they get kids by proxy and it’s really sweet
it’s been years since I’ve seen this film so I might be wrong, but I think skeeter and elizabeth are cousins and related.
I find it both ironic and hypothetical how easily you have commentary on the wrongs of the characters and their racism in this movie yet I'm sure NONE of you say a word about the racism in your own families and friends. at this point we all know that it takes place and it's honestly disheartening knowing that even tho you can acknowledge it; you do nothing about it in real life. There's no place for that type of cowardice in the fight for justice and equality.

Celia's storyline always breaks my heart. Her and Johnny were the sweetest couple and would've been the most loving parents 💔 in contrast to the other women who barely cared for their own children
It is so sad and it never really hit me what the flowers meant. They deserved to have a baby, it would have been so loved and cherish compared to the other children we see
Why didn’t they adopt?
Its usually the people who deserve to be parents that dont. Take Dolly Parton one incredible woman who cant have children. She does a lot though for them even if they arent hers such as the Imagination Library.
Hilly genuinely loves her son. That's basically the one good thing about her.
Sometimes I like to think that Minnie and her kids moved into their home permanently after they got away from Leroy and that they got to feel some fulfillment that way. After all, they do have a ton of space in that house and it's only the two of them. Minnie wouldn't have to make a dangerous trip to and from their house anymore (we see how dangerous it is around Jackson when a man was shot) and she wouldn't have to suffer domestic abuse anymore.
If Leroy hit Minnie, I'm sure he hit his kids too. I'm glad they got away from him.
Octavia (Minny) won the Oscar for this- supporting actress- nearly every woman in the cast has since won Oscars since.
Sissy Spacek and Mary Steenburgen already had Oscars... Allison Janney, Jessica Chastain, Emma Stone and Viola Davis have all won them since and Cicely Tyson has an Honorary Lifetime Achievement Oscar.
When will be Bryce Dallas Howard's turn??

The mother is partly responsible. We know Hilly's father was an awful influence. So the mother should have taken more steps to make sure the daughter isn't influenced as much by him and build a close relationship with her daughter. If the 'Help' can influence the white baby girl to be kind despite her racist mother, why couldn't Hilly's mother influenced her daughter to be better despite her racist father.
(In these days the mother should divorce and leave a racist man like that, but I understand in those days it wouldn't be as easy for Hilly's mother to leave her father. Which is why I said that she should have taught Hilly whilst being married to Hilly's father)
My grandma was “the help” and raised a few white children. She said they would ask her why their parents called her such terrible names. Racism is taught. Those kids loved my grandma.

My white mom had a friend who was black and when she hung out when we were little my brother asked her "why you brown?" My mother was mortified and she said "I am so sorry" and Michelle said "baby, God wanted me to be brown so I am. But I still have red blood like you."And we understood and embraced her. It is indeed taught and I can proudly say that I am a lot of things but racist isn't one of them.

My mom was a "housekeeper" and she helped raised 3 little white kids and taught them Spanish, introduced them to authentic Mexican food, and music. My mom passed this past October and all 3 of those kids had already attend college. The woman my mom worked for wrote her a beautiful letter that we read at her services.
She sounds like she was a beautiful soul. I'm so sorry for your loss. ❤

Celias husband finds out about Minnie a LOT sooner in the book.
And he sincerely could not have cared less that Minnie was there. He just wanted Celia to be happy with him.
Celia literally had her keeping up the ruse even when he knew, and she knew he knew.

Growing up in Mississippi in the 90's it still was similar to this. My mother and grandmother were maids. My mom only got paid $25/week to clean a 3 story of a Lawyer's family. For years, the mother of the house would leave traps to see if my mom would steal, just like in the movie. The woman laughed when my mother said she planned to have us go to college, although my sister went to the same Highschool as her daughters. Thankfully my mom quit and we moved to Florida when I was 13.
Thanks so much for sharing. I am only 29 years old and my grandmother also worked as maid/nanny for almost all of her adult life, here in Texas. People need to realize this stuff is not far in the distant past. That this is very recent and present.

When I was a little girl, my grandmother would put me on her ankles and rock me up-and-down. And I would hold on to her knees. But she had calluses black ones on her knees so thick. I asked her, how did she get those? And she would never tell me when I grew up. I found out. She was always on her knees scrubbing white people's floors😢
How horrible! I'm so happy she moved ya'll away from that. Thank you for sharing your experience. I hate that that kind of thing still exists. Even now in some places.

I would argue that skeeters love interest plot line is actually necessary and thoughtful. Sometimes you can love/care about someone and realize later that they do not share the same morals or values as you. Especially when it has to do with basic human decency/rights.
I dated then dumped a very smart, funny, handsome guy in my 20s after a year and realizing he literally did not see let alone respect people outside his upper middle class world. His siblings were completely different. They new all the names of the Waffle House employees where they went every weekend
I agree. It felt like a gut punch to me when he didn’t support her. She had true integrity and he liked things just the way they were. Him calling her “selfish” was classic projection.

The book explains better why he behaved the way he did. No excuses for him, but you do understand why he was so hurt.
It felt unnecessary to me in the movie. It was already a white savior movie in that they focused on Skeeter so much, & then to center so much around her prejudiced bf, who didn’t affect the plot, felt tacky.
Not sure if it’s already been mentioned but the woman playing Skeeters family’s maid, Constantine is Cecily Tyson. She is a legendary actress with an incredibly expansive career on screen and stage. A literal icon. This film is full of them. I just wanted to give her a little shout out cuz first time I saw this movie I was so excited to see she was in it.
She is indeed a legend, acting well into her 90s and winning a Tony Award at age 88! She was even promoting her memoir on talk shows up until her death at age 96.

The part where you see the other rose bushes near where Celia's planting the new one, and the realization of what that means always crushes me. I have the same reaction as you guys every time! She's probably one of the sweetest people in that movie and probably one of the few people who would have been such a good mother. So unfair :(
That scene tore at my heart when the movie came out. I couldn't relate at that point, but I could imagine, and my heart broke for her. Now, 12 years later, I can barely watch that scene because now I have "rosebushes" of my own.

While Minnie did leave Leroy, it left out why:
Hillys husband got him fired over the book, and he locked her in the bathroom and threatened to burn the house down with her in it.
She escaped, took the kids and made a run for the nearest gas station.
She went to the country to live with her sister.
You guys should definitely check out Hidden Figures if you haven't seen it already. Great movie.

I ran down my steps, almost tripped over my cat, to watch this reaction. It's one of the best revenge movies as well as meaningful movies out there.
The reason behind Constantine’s firing was different in the books. In the book rachel was so pale she passed for white and the people from the meeting were talking about letting her join until they found out rachel was black.
The book explains better but Skeeters friend Elizabeth had pretty severe postpartum depression. Which explains why she was so cold and distant towards her daughter and why Aibileen was so against the second pregnancy.
Ohh okay. Doesn’t explain her racism & complicity though. How sad all around. Her kids & Abilene were the real victims.
I just read the book and this is wrong. Elizabeth just was a horrible mom who was constantly ignoring her child
After my grandmother saw this movie she was chuckling for a week afterwards over the pie scene. She would say, "You had two!" whenever she could work it into a conversation 😂

Heres the bitter truth about the toilet prank:
Hilly wound up selling them all to people who wanted to get a separate bathroom for their help, for a lower price. So basically the prank not only backfired, it had the exact opposite effect.
Which Hilly made a point to tell Skeeter in front of everyone at the benefit.
RIP Leslie Jordan and Nelsan Ellis, gone far too soon. Even with small roles in this they still shine so much. Great reaction guys! Love the variety of media that you cover

Talk about a stacked cast! EIGHT Oscar winning actresses in this movie (Cicely Tyson won a lifetime achievement Oscar which she deserved so I included her as well). This is my favorite performance by Jessica Chastain. Enjoyed y’alls reactions and commentary as always.
Celia’s storyline makes me cry because it hits so close to home 💔. I’ve been through three losses myself and it truly is the worst heartbreak my husband and I have ever felt. We are still holding out hope but taking it day by day 😊

She told him about the book the day before it hit the shelves, and Stuart was even planning on proposing!
She goes to the benefit by herself, and shes treated like a complete pariah.

The nickname stuck when she was born, and she was considered an ugly baby, and her brother said, "That's no baby, its a skeeter!"
My dad actually met Emma Stone on the set of the Help when he was trying to find Bryce Dallas Howard to get an autograph. He said Emma was so sweet.
I'm a northerner who lived in the deep south for 7 years. I can tell you first hand that there are still people like that down there. I'm so glad to be back home.

The problem is, this movie only had great performances, and TBH, Octavia Spencer was the best suporting one

Medgar Evers was buried in Arlington Cemetery on June 19 and was mourned across the country. That two juries composed entirely of whites failed to convict the man accused of Evers' murder, white supremacist Byron De La Beckwith, caused even greater outrage.
In 1994, Byron De La Beckwith was finally convicted for the murder of Medgar Evers. He died in prison in 2001 after failing to win his appeals.

The ratio of $46 to 1963 cost of living would have been drastically different, wouldn't it?

I had a tiny theory about the Two Slices incident. I don't think Minny actually put poop in the pie. She just made Hilly BELIEVE she ate shit. I am most certain she would had tasted it!
Or smelled it. I mean I’ve never put feces in a confection before but…we all know that spraying Febreeze in the bathroom just makes it smell like poop AND flowers lol.

I definitely like to imagine that Minnie and her kids all move in with Celia and her husband. They definitely have the space, and Celia will have children to give love to, even if they aren't hers. I do feel sad for the little girl. I feel like she gets the worst out of everyone because her only mother figure is taken from her.
Mae Mobley would have been treated like a little princess if she was Celia's daughter.

There is a movie called Ghosts of Mississippi. It is about the story of Medger Evers who was shot in his driveway (the scene on the bus when someone got shot). It is about bringing the man who shot him, to justice.
Rest in Peace Cecily Tyson. I always appreciate her motivation speech.
The Help is one of my favorite movies bc it has powerful women especially helping other women to rise up against racism. Im glad yall wonderful men watch this movie & your reactions are very genuine. Try Color Purple if yall haven't seen it!

No I don't see any reactions to this film at all. I think I've seen maybe just one reaction and that's it. Don't know if it's because of the film's themes or if reactors have tried doing _The Help_ but the film company copyright struck them or what.
I wish the movie had included the scene from the book where Celia had beat down a man that had attacked Minnie.

41:19 The whole point of putting the pie story in the book is so that if people start figuring out that the book is about them or their town, Hilly will do her level best to convince them otherwise and make then believe it's fake and that will keep them safe. It would be too embarrassing for her to allow people to find out what actually happened. That's WHY they need to include it in the book. It's insurance.

Every time I hear someone romanticizing the past I think of stories like this.
The problem is is that some people even today DO want this part of the past (hence why they romanticise it).
Watching 3 grown men try not to cry at the end...thank you for seeming real.
35:36 The book confirms something about that ring - it was a garnet. It wasn't even valuable. Hilly's mum gave it to her, but Hilly never wore it, she just got it appraised and didn't bother to wear it once she found out it was basically worthless.
But of course when she tells the others about the theft of the ring she claims it was a ruby.
The strangest thing about Hilly (to me at least) is that in spite of everything, she does genuinely love her children (she has two in the book). You can see it in the movie from the way she kissed her sons head before handing him onto Yula Mae and how she says 'do you want a cheese sandwich' to him in this scene.

1. Must admit I cringed when B said he recognized Octavia Spencer from "Ma" - she's probably better known for "Hidden Figures" (2016), another fantastic movie about how African American women contributed to the space program/getting the US to the moon. Also includes Janelle Monae, Taraji P. Henson, Kevin Costner, Kirsten Dunst, Jim Parsons...etc.
2. Not that I side with Elizabeth Leefolt ("bad mom") AT ALL, but as a woman, I feel the need to point out the subtle comment Abilene makes at 3:00 - that the "birthing blues" got a hold of Miss Leefolt pretty hard. This is a euphemism for post-partum depression, underlined by Abilene saying later that Miss Leefolt "shouldn't be having babies" and having a negative reaction to news of Miss Leefolt's second pregnancy. PPD is very complex and still being studied, but it was definitely not widely accepted at the time - which makes it really sad to think this woman got pregnant, had kids and probably would continue to do so despite it being mentally, emotionally and physically harmful to herself and her children because societal and peer pressure say a woman's duty [during that time] is to get married, have kids and manage the home (another reason why Hilly's husband leaves his wife to handle Yule Mae's loan request). Also loved how you guys showed so much empathy for Cecilia's miscarriages. Such a poignant scene. 💔
First, I appreciate you young men viewing this movie and realizing how wrong this period in time was. My mother was a maid. Her story was closer to Minnie's. She was always treated well by the families she worked for. She took me to work with her many times. I played with the children in the family. With one family, they even took me with them to the all-white country club.
Yes, there were some families closer to Hilly's behavior. That part is real. And ugly.

Big thing with Abileen and Mae Mobley that was left out:
Abileen would play games with her to teach her life lessons.
Example: pretend to sit at a counter, and no matter what, you can't move. This was sometimes played with her brother, so he'd sit and shed throw stuff at him, or vice versa. But the objective is the same: no matter what's said or done to you, you can't move.
Another thing to note is that Mae Mobley was also starting school in the book, and she had a seriously racist teacher.
The whole thing came to a head when her dad caught her playing the above game, and angrily demanded she tell him who taught her the game.
And she said it was her teacher!

I still remember the first time I watched this with my great grandmother, and she loved this movie. I don't know if it's because it's something she experienced or just likes movies of her era, but we also watched Hidden Figures and the Color Purple. When I go visit her we watch these movies all the time

I'm the type of guy (who is 22) that likes horror, action, comedy, and Disney films, but this one is one of my top 5 favorites.
I LOVE Celia and her hubbies characters. The book describes more of their heartful relationship

The check that Celia gave Hilly was suppose to pay for the "damages" of Hilly's evening gown and throwing up at the party.

Anyways, READ THE BOOK! It talks more about Constantine and her kids. Hilly is more demonic. It also describes that Elizabeth had postpartum depression (doesn't justify her actions) and that she is very controlled by Hilly along with the other moms of Jackson

For the second half of the book, Minnie is pregnant.
This is relevant because they mention that her husband never hits her when she's pregnant.
Also: towards the end, she has Sugar start working for Celia so she can take over when Minnie has to go on maternity leave.
It was in this movie that I saw Jessica Chastain for the first time and fell in love! She is simply amazing!

I love this movie, it was very well done. It is crazy to think going into filming this movie Sissy Spacek was the only one to have an oscar and now 5 others in the film have won Oscars since filming this movie.

this movie is incredible Celia storyline is heartbreaking she's the one who deserved the most to become a mother and she can't when you know that Aibileen work for a family with two kids and the mom doesn't change her daughter diapers .. ( well if she has post partum depression is hard l) but she wanted to follow Hilly step so.. you can see how Celia is an amazing person since the first day she treated Minnie like a human and Johnny did too make you understand why he left Hilly ..
Aibileen story is also very hard she spend her time raising others people childs and she had to see her son died and being completly helpless .. that's even harder when you know that things like that still happens ..

7:28 the hate mindset like that is sickening and difficult to understand how it exists. Yet we see it in every generation and every culture. Thankfully it is a cycle that can be broken but it takes lots of work and most often blood. The time set for this movie was only a few decades ago, not that long ago, as there are still people living from that era teaching their grandchildren that negativity.

One of my favorite movies. It was my introduction to the brilliance of Viola Davis and Octavia Spencer. The racism they had to face working as caretakers for peoples children is mind boggling. If someone is taking care of your kids and cooking your meals one would think you’d be nice to that person.

Sissy Spacek. This was a cast of casts. The power of those women across the board. Incredible performances. I never get tired of watching this movie.
This is my Top 10 all-time favorite movies. The performances are amazing and the story is necessary to be told.

This was one of the best movies I’ve ever seen! The writing was amazing & the characters were all so well rounded if you think about it even the characters that you couldn’t stand! Such a great movie!
I highly recommend watching the Secret Life of Bees with Dakota Fanning, Queen Latifah, Jennifer Hudson, Alicia Keys, and Sophie Okonedo. This film is fantastic

The nice gentleman in the bus Abeline/Viola Davis speaks to is Nelsan Ellis. I met him once at a convention in Bonn, Germany. Got me a foto and a hug.
He performed as LaFayette serving in a Diner „Bellefleur's Bar and Grill“ in the TV Show „True Blood“. The character was hardly mentioned in the books.
Nelsan was so brilliant and strong like a true stage actor. The audience adored him. So the character got more profile.
Tragically Nelsan died unexpectedly of heart failure. He was 39 years old. We lost a great talent in 2017.
One of my fave movies and you know what I never thought of until your reaction... that it really sucks that Celia wasn't able to birth a child because you know she would've been such a fun, loving, and progressive Mom, something that the child would've definitely deserved. Compared to how all the other parent-child relationships during this time period...

Man he fact cicely Tyson the first black actres celebreted back in the 50' 60' 70' 80's and Tyler Perry kept her acting in the 2000's until she passed 2 years ago is amazing
About the toilets outside, it's a small detail but when we see Abilene using it, she's visibly sweating a lot. I think it's making the point of saying how poorly made they probably were, and there's most likely no air conditioning and no windows, unlike the bathrooms in the house (obviously). They will have been just small wooden cubicles put up quickly with poor quality, and given the heat they can get in Mississipi, it just goes to show how little they give a sh*t about people of colour/ "the help".
Idk if you guys will see this comment, but I think is important to recognize and have a conversation about how most black actresses in this movie have since expressed regret on this. In part, because ultimately this is a white savior movie, in which a white character rescues these black ladies. Also, because the story is surrounding too much of the white dynamics rather than the black characters, even though the emotional arc comes from the pain of the black women. There’s tons of little things too, just nuances that are overlooked or simplified in the story that in real live are important to acknowledge.
