Chris Hedges gave an accurate explanation for the invasion of Ukraine by putting it in the historical context and then that other gentleman (and I use that term advisedly) tried to argue for his perspective by taking the initiation of the conflict back out of the context into which Chris had just placed it. An obvious example of partisanship, he characterized the explanation as being pro-Putin, and anti American, when in fact, it was merely a rehearsal of historical facts that didn’t excuse Putin’s decision to invade, but rather explained it and at the same time condemned it as a horrific waste of human life. He made it clear that this conflict could have been avoided altogether but for the hegemonic designs of the imperialist war-based economic regime in the United States.

Scott Lucas is purposely misreading Chris Hedges. Lucas needs to read John Mearsheimer who has been at "analysis" longer than Lucas; he would disagree with his reading of Russia and Ukraine.
Lucas is a shameless tool of US imperialism.
John mearsheimer also makes a lot of bad calls on it. So I prefer to look at the hard data myself. Russia is getting clobbered in losses of equipment. 5-1 ratio is staggering.

I want to hear more of this argument between Chris and Scott. On the whole, Chris is right, unchecked U.S. imperialism is at the heart of a lot of the global disorder we're seeing today. On the other hand, there should be a lot of pushback on Chris's assessment of Russia/Ukraine. He sees it through a lens that, though not entirely inaccurate, really misleads on the cause of Russia's invasion.

With due respect to all the guests, the fact they feel like they can comment on the issue is because they define their roles as either escalating or de-escalating elements in the conflicts, e.g. Here Scott is representing the still ambitious and aggressive once hegemon (as a powerful fraction of ruling elites, not everything West) that tends to constantly evade their role. To understand people like Scott better, you can ask them about not genuine regional conflicts, but major man-made disasters like the genocide in Rwanda; Such experts have no expertise in what they define as "not their interest zones". Not only his cause is not humanitarian, but also he literally questions cause and effect relationships. He simply admits to the past mistakes so that he looks rational enough to justify the ongoing calamities, later the ongoing calamities will be admitted by him as another bridge for justifying the future mistakes. That game is already "démodé". This is while, whenever human lives are regarded as a number, no rational person absurdly brings up issues like human rights, international rules (not even laws) as a time consuming distraction, and thus a catalyst to increase "the number".

I would have liked to have seen an entire episode about the potential nuance in the difference of opinions between the two speakers at the very end, i personally think both Chris and the other guy needed at least another 20 minutes each to convey the complex intricacies of their particular points of view, and despite there being an obvious difference of opinions I dont think leaving it where it was left was truly conducive to the overall intention of the discussion.

The Guy in Birmingham in the middle is a shining example of how the west behave. For him and the west, history starts where it benefits them. Words like sanctions, blockades, looking after sovereign interests/security, solidarity etc when the west want to break rules be it for oil, power or to help its Allies but when the same is done by other countries its branded as terrorism. This guy spoke of Russia's expansionism but dismissed the idea that Nato shouldn't have tried to expand as far as Ukraine. He conveniently spoke of H*m*s breaking rules on Oct 7th as though history began there and dismissed the fact that Israel took land that wasn't theirs. One of the first few rules broken was the Balfour declaration and the 1st Nakbah. We call a spade a spade, If the US is to blame for a whole heap of crimes its not wrong to flag it. The US is responsible for most of the wars and crimes either directly or using proxies. The UK is just as bad and their cronies France and Germany are not too far behind for their own Geopolitical interests.
