A nuclear WW3 is possibly unthinkable but could well be fought with the s.c. 'conventional' weapons whose destructive power is nonetheless far from negligible. In 1939 Londoners wore gas masks yet gas was never used on the battlefields, which didn't prevent the death of 75 million people and appalling devastations. As a Cold War child I am outraged by the serene imbecility of our rulers canvassing for the inevitability of war

When looked at in this way you can see that every 80 years there is a major war to upset social structure and create a new order. This is like the white guy version of the Yuga Cycle, but it does seem to be true so far. In this cycle it seems that we’re going to repeat the whole “liberal” vs. “conservative” thing again which is going to end up the same way it did last time.

That expression "since the cold war" irritates me. At what point in the 40+ year cold war are you referring to? A preferable reference would be "since the Cuban missile crisis" In reality the threat is much higher now than it was at any point in the cold war. Even during the Cuba crisis Washington and Moscow were talking. There's no dialogue now, and most of the arms reduction treaties that came out of such crises as Cuba, have been torn up. We are entering ‘pre-war’ world without doubt in my humble opinion! I am old enough to remember when we where in ‘Cold War’ with Russia and time where extremely dangerous.
My biggest concern if Russia decides on taking advantage of lack of military capability from Ukrainian and limited military resources that have been exhausted at the present time.
Western countries are in a very difficult situation as if it is true that we have limited resources from are selves and cannot help Ukrainian military forces until we start ramping up production and that takes time which Ukrainian hasn’t got.
Any type of intervention that is given directly or indirectly from the west in Putins eyes would cause retaliation in which the world may never recover.

what is strange to me that shortly there after the fall of Soviet Union started the war in Jugoslavia, then for a crime in United states, that had to be treated like a home crime (as much as large) it was bombing and invaded other countries like Afghanistan and Iraq, then Lybia ad Syria for arab's 2011 revolutions. I think that we're not in a pre-war or post war time, we are in a continuos war time. The wars never end.
Even if we tried to increase our army now it's far too late, we would need at least a decade to get back up to our previous strength from before the cuts.
We don't have that time and Russia knows that.

I much prefer a continental breakfast these days, with an addition of a couple of mini financier cakes. I've gone back to the origins (continental European here) and to basics with age. A few grapes, a cup of good Brazilian coffee, two slices of country crust bread with butter, a couple of mini financiers, a small glass of freshly squeezed orange juice, a sunny side up fried egg and voilá, the perfect breakfast.

This war could have been avoided many times but NATO does not want to negotiate. When NATO opposed both the Minsk agreement in 2015 and the peace draft in Istanbul in the spring of 2022, it cannot be interpreted in any other way that NATO wants war with Russia. However, I feel a little sorry for the people of Ukraine who are forced to go to war with Russia. If Zelendsky had stood on the side of the people, the war would have been avoided.

In a conventional war between NATO and Russia, Russia would not stand a chance. I think Putin would escalate to nukes very quickly for that very reason, I find that somewhat terrifying!

Stupid question, we have been in the third White War for a long time. Iraq, Afghanistan, Ukraine, Libya, African wars, Korea and Twain incoming.
When first world war started no one wanted it to be world war, no one even called it the world war, it was called the European War, the great war, but it kept escalating till it became the world war.
Like now all big countries want to avoid world war, but also want to defeat the enemy, so the risk is there.
These are all regional wars not a world war which usually only has to sides ie. Allies vs the axis in WW2
