Do you know that international students pay multiple that of home students (in my case 21500 per year for PhD while UK students pay 4400 per year) and I received poor supervision (in fact no supervision at all), so a PhD is equivalent to providing a PC with access to papers n he Internet and you are then in your own, no knowledge transfer at all and it is worthless

The issue is with the Student Loans Company which runs the lending programmes. They are free to increase the interest rates at any time, even if you have signed fixed rate contract. Last year my rates were changed without a letter and added 5 years to my repayments. This is a government organisation so it’s any easy way to generate extra taxes.

I saved up the past five years to enable me to pay for a Masters degree tuition.

Nordic, German and French universities usually don't charge fees. In such a case studying is an enjoyable and less risky experience. But, where students invest thousands of dollars/pounds, then the financial burden is carried forward.
Also, apart from the top 5 or 7 UK Universities, others don't actually help students develop skills.
What is the point of getting a degree if there is zero skill development and skill deficits in the economy persist?
Not worth investing time or money!!

The issue here is that they are running an education business. To attract more students, they lower the entry requirements for English language certificates. Meanwhile, lenders might increase interest rates, which can disadvantage students. Additionally, international students face difficulties with restrictions on part-time work and the high cost of living in major cities due to rising inflation. To alleviate financial burdens, students can seek scholarships, grants, and suitable part-time jobs

Honestly, universities should be state funded in the UK, and unis/courses that are not delivering quality degrees and don't improve should be shut down. Education is an investment in our people, and shouldn't be locking anyone in a lifetime of debt. I only support fee charging in unis that can actually differentiate themselves from the rest, top 5 at most, and even there it should at most be supplementary. It's nonsense to be charging these fees from people who can't ever even repay them. I say this as someone who has repaid their student fees, but mine were under £15k for 4 years! Having £80-90k is a whole mortgage in some parts of the country, and it makes no sense to saddle people with that if they will never have the income to pay it.

No, once you become an adult at 18, you should be able to pay for yourself. The problem is that the government is promoting dependence and delayed adulthood by cutting apprenticeships, internships, work as you learn jobs and entry-level jobs are asking for 5 years of experience. If employers hired people to pay for their education and vocation, the economy will be different today. Government is stagnating a large workforce every year each new cohort of young adults enter adult life.

@peteturner8493 I think that future employers are going to be understanding because they also have student loans as well. I also think that the main problem in university education in the uk is that we confuse it with Job training. This leads to students coming out of university with no idea of how to do the jobs they have and needing to be trained again by the company. So the way to solve the issue is fix the job training part (make it more ie make it more like Germany). Then replace student fees with a graduate tax to remove the pressure on students and not punish non grads. And stop forcing all students to go to university at the age of 18. Personally, I would love a university system that had more middle aged and elderly people who want to learn. Like I feel that a lot of people who are going to uni age 18 are just going because there are no other options and are wasting everyone’s time and money. Views?

I'm American, so this doesn’t quite translate at a 1 for 1 scale, but I think the refund talk is just getting the foot in the door to discuss the abysmal rates that students pay for education. It's a similar problem in the US. The rates for going to college are more than twice what it was for our parents. And in regards to Covid, networking is invaluable to breaking into the industry you want to work in. Universities did not provide that, nor the tactile work experience that many professionals NEED to even be considered for a job. I feel like the "invaluable experiences" that they talk about translates to many as "oh the young 20 somethings are sad they didn't go to house parties. Womp Womp." when the real conversation should be about the system is broken and needs to be fixed because it's not working.

The point the lecturer makes 15 minutes in, and a running theme throughout is that it's not a transaction it's about the wider experience of education which is flawed as this experience is a service delivered over 3/4 years with a specific product (degree) at the end. The experience varies but is part of the transaction. People in the comments can't seem to separate the product and the service component of a university when this issue is tackling the service being delivered.
It's also very entertaining how every person in that room bar the student can say they sympathise while having recieved their degree for free or at a significant discount. I bet they sympathise.

If you`re enrolling on a mickey mouse BA degree, don't be surprised if you can't find a decent paying job at the end of your stint, by which time you`ll probably be massively in debt. Sadly, you`d be much better off acquiring a universally valid skill set after leaving school.

Still with this cost, students come here for study and govt don't want to give jobs to immigrants while they wants to give aslyum to illegal immirants. Reducing the higher salary for work visa would be a good thing to these students, atleast give jobs to these students than getting more people from abroad.
