Decoding Putin and Xi's blueprint for a new world order | DW Analysis

  • China and Russia are getting closer. Rather than distancing himself from Vladimir Putin over his war against Ukraine, Xi Jinping is doubling down on the relationship. And Putin is becoming more and more dependent on Xi as an economic, military and geopolitical lifeline. Why is this happening? What do Xi and Putin want to achieve? And what does their relationship mean for the rest of the world?
DW’s Richard Walker goes on a deep dive into the roots of the Moscow-Beijing relationship. Finding how the two sides are an economic “match made in heaven.” How China’s People Liberation Army wouldn’t be where it is today without military supplies from Russia when it was frozen out from other suppliers. And how the personal bond between Putin and Xi is feeding into a joint mission by the two men to reshape the world.
This relationship has potentially deep implications for every nation on earth. In part 3, we explore the impact in three areas currently underestimated by many: the prospect of joint China-Russia nuclear weapons planning, the impact on India of Russia becoming subordinate to China, and the implications for the endgame of the Ukraine war.
Featuring interviews with leading experts including Alexander Gabuev, Bonnie Glaser, Zhou Bo, Garima Mohan, Wang Huiyao and Decker Eveleth.

If the United States says that it does not pose a threat to China and Russia, then look at how many military bases the United States has around Russia on the territory of NATO countries, which is getting closer to the border with Russia, including military bases, and how many military bases around China, and immediately look at the number of military bases of China and Russia, and that's it it will be clear that these are necessary measures.

but who will attack either China or Russia? Russia need a vassal not a partner, they disarmed Ukraine in 1992 with Lisbon treaty and by 2001 forced Ukraine to get rid of nuclear weaponry. So this is not power move by your understanding? While NATO expanded in the east Europe only in 2004. They were afraid of "brotherly country" even way before nato propositions or European Union. So stop this BS, yeah there are no saints in this world, but Russia, more exactly Putin, is master manipulator. Guy just doesn't want to be included into western economical circle and that's it. In capitalistic world, Russia could be very precious partner with its rich land, potential economy but his mentality is thuggish which gives him paranoia that he will be exposed as dictator. But he did even worse for his country, the guy will die eventually, but Russia will remain as not reliable partner in any regards while could've stayed gray cardinal by flirting with US and China for years and stimulating his economy at the same time. When you're incompetent leader - war is the answer.

If the US had ever been smarter (more realist) in its strategic foreign policies, it should never have driven Russia to the Chinese side. Politicians in the old days understood that the best scenario was to have a weakened and contained adversary, not a desperate country with military might and nothing else to lose. Great power competition is about reaching a balance that is advantageous to you, not a winner-takes-all situation that can never be achieved without great wars if possible at all.

This was the worst stretch of foreign policy by the west by nuke miles. Russia requested twice to be part of a larger NATO security umbrella, leaving China the real competetor fo the USA marooned (one could then reason). Oh But nooo, they (US EU) decided to shun the Russian Federations endless calls to stop marching NATO to her borders. Listen nooo. USA doubled down, as the US can take both Russia and China Washinton said, leaving Russia no choice to find new trade partners in India Africa and of course China to escape the worst samctions deplyed in the history of mankind against a nation. This is a disater that even Henry Kisinger acknowledged was the to be avoided at all cost, forcing Russia into the arms of teh CCP Beijing. But thats me, I wish it all could be different.

It is a time relative situation. The longer western powers hesitate to pull the trigger the more difficult it will be to conclude a war conventionally. If we wait until China builds 3000 ICBM and a naval force double the size of ours we will be in a very difficult position on the Chess Board. In other words, avoiding war with China may not be an option. You just cannot go over there and ask them to please stop building so many tanks and drones. The situation forces our hand.

its a weak propganda piece. The narrator said the war is causing a lot of turmoil but is failing to remember who fuelled the war by sending hundreds of billions of dollars to Ukraine. Jefferey Sachs and Robert Mearsheimer said sending weapons to Ukraine would only prolong the war and not necessarily result in a Ukraine victory. This was before the first shots in this war were fired. We still remember who it was that said "Even if Zelensky is ready to negotiate, we are not".

13:23 This is how the West frames it NOW. However, one seems to conveniently forget, that during the 60'ies, it was the West that drew a "red line" with Cuba wanting nuclear rockets in their bases. The West, the US on top, straight out did not want that and actually threatened with nuclear war, if the Russians would deliver those nukes. But... if "a sovereign country has the right to self-determination", then Cuba had the same right to decide that they wanted those rockets. However, this was unpalatable for the US and they would NOT stand for it, even if it meant war.
50 years later, and we say that Russia can't force their own will on another sovereign country, even not for security reasons... while we did *exactly* the same. Well then, if WE had the right to draw a "red line" that can't be crossed, even with a sovereign nation, than so can Russia and anyone else. The fact we now deny others that right that we give to ourselves, show how hypocritical we, the West, are.
If Ukraine has the right to decide it wants to be with NATO because it's a sovereign country, than so has Cuba the right to decide it wants nuclear rockets on its soil as a sovereign country. Period.

      @a0flj0 Месяц назад +3

China is absolutely correct to feel threatened. However, the threat isn't the US. The threat is the abstract notion of Western style democracy.
Chinese citizen have the opportunity to observe Western style democracy at work throughout the world. It's obvious to anyone without a blindfold that on average people live better, at least from a material point of view, in Western style democracies, regardless if they're living in highly developed countries, like the US or South Korea, or emerging democracies, like the former communist countries in Eastern Europe or the Philippines. That material point of view is the most visible one, but there are also other things in Western style democracies that people notice, such as the rule of law and more respect for basic human rights.
China is an autocracy, and has been one for about five millennia. The overwhelming majority of China's population never had any contact with foreigners, and a large part of it lives in the countryside - China's industrial sector is powered by a rather small part of its population. The Chinese government also strictly controls what information its citizen can access. That causes the vast majority of Chinese to support the dictatorial government of China.
Nevertheless, knowledge about the world has a way to spread uncontrolled, despite the strongest efforts of some governments to stem its propagation. People in China getting the idea that they would be better off without the rule of the one party system is a huge threat to China's governing elite.
I their stupidity, Chinese leaders believe it's just a matter of worldwide political dominance, and think that becoming more powerful and more influential than the US on the international stage will prove to their citizen that China's autocratic political system is superior to Western style democracy. That's not going to happen, as long as people are still imprisoned illegally in China and while the standard of living there is still appallingly low compared to even new, emerging democracies elsewhere.
_That_ is what's threatening China. Only, China fails to understand it. You can't effectively fight something without understanding its true nature. Which is why China is bound to loose - but Chinese citizen are bound to win.

I feel like the US’s desire for total dominance with itself at the helm caused this issue. When you isolate countries, especially strong, independent countries like Russia and China, they start to get their own ideas with themselves at the helm. The US should never have suppressed China and it shouldn’t have suppressed Russia. Now their anti-US rhetoric is so engrained into their way of governance that I don’t see how relations will change other than a total change in government, and we certainly cannot rely on Russia and China to change government anytime soon.
It’s also impossible for the US to improve relations with these countries even if these three desperately wanted to, because the US’s allies also have engrained into their governance anti-Eastern sentiment, and any form of attempts to come together will be seen as outright betrayal by Japan, Ukraine and Taiwan.
These countries will never be able to settle their differences, the only time they could was the 1960s.

Peaceful coexistence (Russian: Мирное сосуществование, romanized: Mirnoye sosushchestvovaniye) was a theory, developed and applied by the Soviet Union at various points during the Cold War in the context of primarily Marxist-Leninist foreign policy and adopted by Soviet-allied socialist states, according to which the Socialist Bloc could peacefully coexist with the capitalist bloc (i.e., U.S.-allied states). This was in contrast to the antagonistic contradiction principle that socialism and capitalism could never coexist in peace. The Soviet Union applied it to relations between the western world, particularly NATO countries, and nations of the Warsaw Pact.
Debates over differing interpretations of peaceful coexistence were one aspect of the Sino-Soviet split in the 1950s and 1960s. During the 1970s, the People's Republic of China under the leadership of its founder, Mao Zedong, argued that a belligerent attitude should be maintained towards capitalist countries, and so initially rejected the peaceful coexistence theory as essentially Marxist revisionism. Their decision in 1972 to establish a trade relationship with the United States also saw China cautiously adopting a version of the theory to relations between itself and non-socialist countries. From that point through the early 1980s and the adoption of Socialism with Chinese characteristics, China increasingly extended its own peaceful coexistence concept to include all nations. Albanian ruler Enver Hoxha (at one time, China's only true ally) also denounced this and turned against China as a result of the latter's growing ties to the West, as exemplified by Richard Nixon's visit to China in 1972; today, Hoxhaist parties continue to denounce the concept of peaceful coexistence.
Peaceful coexistence, in extending itself to all countries and social movements tied to the USSR's interpretation of communism, quickly became modus operandi for many individual communist parties as well, encouraging quite a few, especially those in the developed world, to give up their long-term goal of amassing support for an armed, insurrectionist communist revolution in exchange for more active participation in electoral politics.

The top priority of China is still its economic growth , for better living standard of its people.
But it is more difficult today than 20 years ago, when the rules of world are defined and more beneficial to the west , and no need to mention the sanction or barriers US/its allies put to slow down the development of China.
Russia is one of the close partners of China, as it helps have a secure backyard in the north border and reliable enery supply source. At the same time, China has been expanding its partnership in middle east, Africa , South America , South East Asia in full scale. Indeed it is a turning point for the world.

China has benefited from the most lopsided trade relationship possibly in world history. The West welcomed in Chinese goods with the most bare minimum of tariffs, very often no tariffs at all, while China demanded any foreign companies wanting to sell to their market do the following, 1: set up a chinese partner company to share ownership of a joint venture inside China, 2: share all intellectual property & technology with the partner company, 3: not use their own branding, but the branding of the partner company, 4: aggressively devalue their currency, 5: keep large sections of the economy completely off-limits to trade (e.g. financial services is one of the things Western economies are best at, China bans foreign trade in those services).
The fact that we actually agreed to this nonsense, and that it had continued for decades (and still does in Europe) is utterly remarkable.

@@Cotswolds1913 You listed a few points which require a long article for discussion.
But the context 30 years ago was that EU GDP per capita was 15 times vs China. The policies China put 30 years ago were quite reasonable as a full open market in 90s was impossible. Today it is quite different for example Tesla set up its own entity in China for EVs(not jointed venture). Similar for financial services . Good to understand better about China today, instead of stick to some common west media narratives.
One obvious mistake in your points : the #3, Germany car brands instead of "partner company brand) are very strong in China Volkswagen BMW, Audi ,Mercedes-benz as they are still the best car producers in China. Volkswagen is top sales of 3.18 millions cars in China in 2022. The local brand BYD may take Volkswagen top sales position in 2023.

@@xgguo3531 Volkswagen were the first car company to start a joint venture in China, the Shanghai Volkswagen Automotive Co., or SAIC Motor, which owned 50% of the venture, and Volkswagen itself 40%. This is precisely how China has developed such a strong electric vehicle industry, because it had been freely sucking up all of Germany's automotive technology, which it was unable to successfully apply to gas-powered cars (at least in a way which would be competitive within Western countries), but which was realized that EVs would be more of a fresh starting point for everyone, so easier to rush to that industry with more success.
To my knowledge Tesla is the only automotive company with a fully owned venture in the country, but even if there were more exceptions, by and large the rule is as I said, and any future exceptions to it do not erase the fact that nearly every western company in China has gone through this process, to China's absolutely enormous benefit.

@@xgguo3531 And on your point about the timing, the WTO actually made China promise (in written declaration), understanding the rules of the organization as they are, that it would reform it's confiscatory trade practices before it was allowed to join the organization and enjoy the low tariffs of WTO. China never followed through on those commitments, it just continued to take advantage of us.

The real reason for future growth to be more difficult than in the past is not global (or american) competition, but rather the success of the past makes it harder. When at a very low level, only a small growth is a huge advance. Moving from 2 to 3 is 50% growth; moving from 30 to 33 is only 10%, but still an increment of 3. The more successful china (or anyone) is, then the slower future growth is likely to be.

Ya know, this seemingly inevitable global conflict being lead between the US and China probably couldve been avoided. If, when China started opening up to global capitalism, the US would have went out of its way to not just become economic partners but to become allies. That wouldve created a sort of global hegemony of power sharing between the two nations. And above all, peace and prosperity for the human species. You might think that couldnt be possible because of Chinas authoritarianism conflicts too much with western ideals of democracy. But it is possible. Not only is it possible (considering the US is allies with other authoritarian regimes such as Saudi Arabia) but such a friendship could've possibly, eventually, grown to influence China into becoming more democratic overtime as well. Instead, the US runs off fear. Fear of competition. Fear that they cant have it all. Its reactionary and will lead to the death of us all. Because as the US becomes more wary and defensive, China reacts to such postures in kind. Its all so foolish.
