Who says crossbody bags, white sneakers and animal print are out? They’re classic and I have worn them for over 60 years. I don’t listen to the fashion industry very much. I only take what I like from any trend and discard the rest.
One more thing about "trends." The garment industry isn't working for you when it swings from pendulum to pendulum - last year's colour/style/shape (that you loved) is out! Get rid of all your 'boring old/frumpy" stuff and buy all this new stuff! The aim is to make you feel bad about yourself so that you will keep consuming. Fashion has adopted the approach of junk food manufacturers - get you hooked on the product, and then change flavours constantly so you never shut down the flow of money from your bank account to their profit sheets.
May as well put the old clothes in plastic storage bags/ containers and keep them in the closet until they come back in style. I still have clothes from high school and now back in style again👍🏼

Some of the best advice I ever got from one of the wardrobe consultants, was to find out your best colors, dress for your body shape, and invest in timeless classics, which will always fit in with the trends. Each season, add just a few trendy items, like an animal print scarf, or a stylish belt or piece of jewelry, and otherwise stay with the classics. I have followed this advice all these years, and it has served me well--I have pieces from several years back that still look great!😊
@@sherylbranca9532 That's exactly what my Mum told me! She'd had a style consultant back in the early 80s and it was the advice she was given - especially just limiting trendy acquisitions to affordable accessories like scarves and belts.
Thank you so much for encouraging people to 1) wear what suits *them* and 2) ignore unflattering or unappealing trends. Some influencers were telling us only 2 years ago that wide trousers and/or midi-length dresses and skirts would be overwhelming/unflattering on petites. Now they're promoting these styles without any reference to one's height or body shape - especially when their video is sponsored. I look like a tube in wide legs and so I have been sitting that particular trend out. The best possible approach is to follow Cathy: do what works for you and your body. If you rock the wide pants - then go for it. But if you don't - save your money for when the styles that work for you come back in!
I'm 5ft 4inch tall and much prefer wearing midi or maxi dresses. I feel old and uncomfortable in shorter styles. (I do wear mini dresses in Autumn/Winter over 75-100 denier tights with long boots, or leggings. (I hate 'old' Looking Tunic tops, on myself ) I also prefer trousers to ,either , be bootcut style or moderately wide, because of the way they flow. I can't carry off straight trousers. And I NEVER wear jeans . Shows how we're all different, because it's not just our overall height, but the length of our upper and lower torso/legs. Designers are so hung up on Trends. I ignore them all !! I just wear what I feel and look good in, and feel comfortable in.

Even at the same height our bodies can be different and need different silhouettes to look and feel our best. haha I always say one of the actually good things about getting older is finally finding the confidence to say, "bah,, not for me," and then go rock our own looks. Yay us!
Classic white shirts will always be fashionable. Cross body bags will always be functional for day to day life. There are plenty of options for when we're "off duty".
I think we’ve learned just how handy cross-body bags are-& I don’t think we’ll give them up even if EVERY influencer says they’re out!! Playing with some trends is fun, but they’ve got to be practical and comfortable!!
I think button up cardigans will always be in style. Same for shorter boxy sweaters/jackets. They have been in & out since the 40's. Anything that continually comes back in style is a lasting style/trend.
Gasp! White sneakers out!!!!! They are ALWAYS the best in the summer with a casual dress. I’m with you on the crossbody purse. This reminds me of… I need to declutter my purses.

A lot of what is allegedly out this fall are what I consider classic pieces. Cardigans, white shirts, white sneakers, etc. are basics that are always in style.

I take it all with a grain of salt. I never forget the reason for trends is all about the revenue. I refuse to fall into the ‘haul all the new things.” Maybe it’s turning 60, I’m more interested in what looks best on my body and echos my personality vs the hot new trend. My friend and I were out one weekend laughing at all the Stepford wives who have been following the same Instagram influencers. They looked like clones 😅.

I do like to add in a few new trends but I certainly would not replace my favorites with something just because it’s not considered on trend. I agree with you, that certain classics never go out!
My thoughts - trends are created to get you to spend money. Styles come back around every 3 years. I have wide leg pants from 4 years ago that are now “in style”. I also had animal print from ages ago. My advice save your fav outfits they will be back in 3 yrs! 😊
I love my cross body I live in Los Angeles and walk a lot and for safety but also looks good to me. I just purchased one that’s a little larger and more stylish and in better proportion I also still wear my white sneakers . Honestly there are ways to look “ trendy” with what you like by how you put things together it should be fun ❤️
My skinny or straight leg jeans are going nowhere! I don’t own a pair of sneakers, my leopard print clothes are going nowhere but my closet with my skinny jeans! Thank goodness we can make a choice!!
The cross-body bag is a must! My dr told me that women have far more rotator cuff disasters due to the weight of the bags they (we) carry. The cross-body style allows us to disburse the weight of what we carry across our entire body (thus the name…) and not hurt ourselves. As a teacher, there are some days I just have more “stuff” than other days so distributing that weight is an imperative. So find a color/design you like in a cross-body style!
I agree with you....a white sneaker is classic and not a trend. I'm with you on the wide leg jeans. I prefer a slimmer fit. I love animal print and won't stop wearing it. I wear pink in the spring and summer.
I have never followed fashion trends unless I can't find an alternative. After shunning skinny jeans and leggings for YEARARRS I finally started wearing them a few years ago, esp because I started working out, got lots of legging for that, and have ended up wearing them for every day. Also, I have worn KEDS tennis shoes since 1958 because I have a 12N foot which is very skinny and NO OTHER tennis shoe fits my foot. I don't understand the attraction to animal prints! But I DO agree with cross body bags! Never get rid of those! Thanks for your informative video. You dress a lot classier and spend a LOT more money than I do on clothing, but I enjoy your posts!
I don’t tend to follow trends but I am very glad to see the end of those hideous Frankenstein boots, slutty animal print and ripped jeans. I may consider not wearing crossbody bags when bag snatchers go out of fashion but not before. I really think fashion brands only come up with these things to shame us into buying more stuff. I also am an apple and I am only 5-1”. On me, wide-leg pants make me look even shorter! I prefer an ankle-length straight-leg pants. Quince does a fantastic one and I have purchased them in several colors. Love them! 🙋♀️🥰❤️👍‼️
I don’t get it …stores are full of button up cardigans, leopard prints and white tennis shoes…and I still see a lot of skinny jeans….I agree, wear what you feel best in, the fashion police aren’t after any of us.

I appreciated your upfront statements about trends and styles for the individual 😉 that’s me! I’m not plus size, but am over 50. I am interested in clothing outfits and I do a little research about trends. What’s trending helps me know what others might be buying, when I work a display or dress a mannequin. I like the button front cardigan, I own one zip front. But that is the only one I’ve found that fits me right. I wear cardigans, denim jackets and wool blazers. I enjoy your casual conversation with us, and your voice is soothing. (You could do audio books 😉)
Prerequisite for any size purse/wallet for me is crossbody. For all the reasons you mentioned. So happy and free not to be influenced by fashion dictators unless it suits me 😜
Great video Cathy!! I love your take on what's in style and not. There's no way I'd wear those Herman Munster boots! I've lost too much weight so I could wear skinny/slimleg jeans. I'm not giving them up! No No Nay Nay! I have always refused to wear distressed jeans, I don't care for them at all, it takes me back to childhood times when to wear such clothing was just not done because it made a person look poor. I also like the animal prints as a way to 'pop' an outfit...I think pink and pastel colours are better suited to spring and summer, I'm with you on the jewel tones for the dreary fall and winter season. I disagree with a lot these too, but have come to realize that trends have everything to do with marketing and if "they" say "this is 'in' and that's 'out'", it's because they need to change things up to make money. Many of the things here are never going out of style, they are just being replaced for marketing purposes. Sure, there are updated versions, but at least where I live, I see a lot of classics and always will. You can probably tell I don't follow the trends! I look at them and do update pieces in my wardrobe when I know it's time, but I am not ditching half my closet because this year's trends will be "out" next year! Have to keep it in perspective.
I agree with button up cardigans being a classic. May I recommend you look at Sezane. Their Betty cardigan is very high quality and comes in so many colors. I own several. One is a deep wine which would be a nice blue red for you. Right now I'm wearing them as a lightweight jacket. Also on the topic of jeans. I'm 71 and wear an 8. The wide leg vs skinny leg to me is a moot point. It's a preference. More important to me is the rise. I don't want any jeans or trousers that are low rise at all. I like a mid rise or high rise waist. Otherwise my blouses don't stay tucked in and I feel constricted with the usual muffin top.

I totally agree with you about skinny jeans and crossbody bags. The fashion police would have to prise both items away from me with a lot of kicking and screaming on my part! I also like leopardskin print, though as you say, in small doses.
At the very beginning of a successful year-long diet, I wore straight-leg pants. Friends said, "Boy, the weight is really coming off!" I hadn't yet lost an ounce.
Wide/relaxed leg looks nice in a flowy fabric (like gauze or chiffon) or a medium weight fabric that drapes nicely. Cotton/denim is sometimes too stiff/rigid for wide legs, especially if they're too wide & you are not tall. In jeans I like a Straight (not super skinny) Trouser or a Flare. I am top heavy (broad shoulders/big boobs) with narrower hips/thighs & sometimes I like a little extra fullness in my bottom half to look more balanced & not look like the literal letter T or H or a marshmallow on toothpicks :) I think the trick for those of us who are 5'4" or under, is not to go too wide in too stiff a fabric, especially if you don't wear a higher heel (which after foot/ankle surgery I cannot wear anymore) In general I avoid anything too oversized or too sausage casing/fitted. As a now plus sized person the fit & proportions are even more important. I am glad the oversized, too long jackets & tops have been replaced by "cropped" styles which are a better proportion for my height. If I go petite, the sleeves are too short 😅 & so are the pants. With higher waisted bottoms a shorter top is better imo. I personally hate fussing with tucking things in & blousing them all the time.
Cathy, I find jean styles change often so I choose to buy straight leg pants which I enjoy wearing and keeping in my closet for more than a year or two.
I am so glad I found you. I don't follow fash I on trends much either. I am 67 with an apple body. I am a petite, 5 foot 2 and 180lbs. My legs are very short. I have always worn what I like.
It seems that about 6 months after something is out, they are saying it is back in again. I just go with what is flattering and will keep my cross body bags, thank you very much. Also I like the look of skinny jeans tucked in tall boots. I prefer bootcut or slightly wide leg with other types of shoe (I am more of a pear shape so when I only like the look of a skinny on me when it is tucked in a boot because it balances my thighs by providing more visual weight at the bottom of my egg).
I love button up cardigans. I wear them all year and I will keep wearing them. I have never worn white blouses and I never will. I have never liked chunky boots. They may look good on a twenty year old tall and slim woman with slim ankles, but never on me. Cross body bags are a must.
I agree with your thoughts on many of these trends. The thing to keep in mind, these trends come and go so fast it makes one’s head swim. The “fashion” industry just wants to sell us more stuff, that end up in our charity bags. That is not good for anyone. Many of these items, like an animal print can just be put back in the closet until it’s day comes again, 2 yrs from now.
I heard that it’s the black and white sneakers that are out of style that’s a marketing ploy. That skinny jeans are out is just a rumor. I will not let go of my skinny jeans. I have a wide butt but thin legs.
I have jeans of all kinds, and plan to wear them continuously depending on what I'm wearing on top. But I have really really enjoyed the wide leg jeans and cropped for my 5'2" height.
Several observations.... White trauners/tennis shoes....If you wear larger shoes(size 10),white makes you look like you're wearing clown shoes. Also,for travelers, white tennis shoes can mark you as an American.,especially in Europe.. Where pickpockets are very active. Same thing for cross body bags. Its all about safety.. No matter where you are. Slacks/pants....I'm all leg...why aren't ladies pants sized like mens'pants?? We need inseem selections....I've lost height in my spine, but not my legs. I don't and won't wear high water pants.
I'm the opposite of you. I have a long torso and short legs. I buy Capri pants to get ones that hit my ankle. I can't wear petites because waist to crotch is way too short.
Hi Cathy as a petite like you I will not give up my skinny jeans I tried wide jeans and except if you are wearing them with high heel which I don't really wear those jeans are not really flattering Plus skinny jeans or straight leg jeans are so much convenient for our Canadian weather 😂 And a crossbody bag it my way to go ! like you said you don't have to worry to let your bag somewhere especially if you are taking the public transit or go shopping they are safe and so much practical 💚

I'm a plus sized 75 year old. I'm only 5 feet one inch tall so I have trouble finding anything that fits. Plus size clothes seem to be made for really tall women. Even high waisted short or petite pants come up to my boobs. Plus size tops often have shoulders that end way over my arms and armholes that start near my waist. I buy things that fit regardless of latest fashion.

@@sherylbranca9532 That's exactly what my Mum told me! She'd had a style consultant back in the early 80s and it was the advice she was given - especially just limiting trendy acquisitions to affordable accessories like scarves and belts.
Thank you so much for encouraging people to 1) wear what suits *them* and 2) ignore unflattering or unappealing trends. Some influencers were telling us only 2 years ago that wide trousers and/or midi-length dresses and skirts would be overwhelming/unflattering on petites. Now they're promoting these styles without any reference to one's height or body shape - especially when their video is sponsored. I look like a tube in wide legs and so I have been sitting that particular trend out. The best possible approach is to follow Cathy: do what works for you and your body. If you rock the wide pants - then go for it. But if you don't - save your money for when the styles that work for you come back in!
I'm 5ft 4inch tall and much prefer wearing midi or maxi dresses. I feel old and uncomfortable in shorter styles. (I do wear mini dresses in Autumn/Winter over 75-100 denier tights with long boots, or leggings. (I hate 'old' Looking Tunic tops, on myself ) I also prefer trousers to ,either , be bootcut style or moderately wide, because of the way they flow. I can't carry off straight trousers. And I NEVER wear jeans . Shows how we're all different, because it's not just our overall height, but the length of our upper and lower torso/legs. Designers are so hung up on Trends. I ignore them all !! I just wear what I feel and look good in, and feel comfortable in.

Even at the same height our bodies can be different and need different silhouettes to look and feel our best. haha I always say one of the actually good things about getting older is finally finding the confidence to say, "bah,, not for me," and then go rock our own looks. Yay us!

Classic white shirts will always be fashionable. Cross body bags will always be functional for day to day life. There are plenty of options for when we're "off duty".
I think we’ve learned just how handy cross-body bags are-& I don’t think we’ll give them up even if EVERY influencer says they’re out!!

I think button up cardigans will always be in style. Same for shorter boxy sweaters/jackets. They have been in & out since the 40's. Anything that continually comes back in style is a lasting style/trend.
Anyone over 50 doesn’t care what is in or out. We wear what we want!

A lot of what is allegedly out this fall are what I consider classic pieces. Cardigans, white shirts, white sneakers, etc. are basics that are always in style.

Totally agree! I prefer skinny jeans, a cross body bag, only a slight flair in my pants. No wide leg pants for me. I’m 67 years young! I want to look good but don’t need to follow trends. Thank you, Cathy

I take it all with a grain of salt. I never forget the reason for trends is all about the revenue. I refuse to fall into the ‘haul all the new things.” Maybe it’s turning 60, I’m more interested in what looks best on my body and echos my personality vs the hot new trend. My friend and I were out one weekend laughing at all the Stepford wives who have been following the same Instagram influencers. They looked like clones 😅.

My thoughts - trends are created to get you to spend money. Styles come back around every 3 years. I have wide leg pants from 4 years ago that are now “in style”. I also had animal print from ages ago. My advice save your fav outfits they will be back in 3 yrs! 😊
I love my cross body I live in Los Angeles and walk a lot and for safety but also looks good to me. I just purchased one that’s a little larger and more stylish and in better proportion I also still wear my white sneakers . Honestly there are ways to look “ trendy” with what you like by how you put things together it should be fun ❤️
I love cardigans! I have both button up and no buttons on them.
Like you, they will have to pry some of these from my cold dead hands - like my skinny jeans, white sneakers, crossbody bags, animal prints.
My skinny or straight leg jeans are going nowhere! I don’t own a pair of sneakers, my leopard print clothes are going nowhere but my closet with my skinny jeans! Thank goodness we can make a choice!!

The cross-body bag is a must! My dr told me that women have far more rotator cuff disasters due to the weight of the bags they (we) carry. The cross-body style allows us to disburse the weight of what we carry across our entire body (thus the name…) and not hurt ourselves. As a teacher, there are some days I just have more “stuff” than other days so distributing that weight is an imperative. So find a color/design you like in a cross-body style!
Chunky black boots are for teenaged goths.
I agree with you....a white sneaker is classic and not a trend. I'm with you on the wide leg jeans. I prefer a slimmer fit. I love animal print and won't stop wearing it. I wear pink in the spring and summer.

I have never followed fashion trends unless I can't find an alternative. After shunning skinny jeans and leggings for YEARARRS I finally started wearing them a few years ago, esp because I started working out, got lots of legging for that, and have ended up wearing them for every day. Also, I have worn KEDS tennis shoes since 1958 because I have a 12N foot which is very skinny and NO OTHER tennis shoe fits my foot. I don't understand the attraction to animal prints! But I DO agree with cross body bags! Never get rid of those! Thanks for your informative video. You dress a lot classier and spend a LOT more money than I do on clothing, but I enjoy your posts!
I don’t tend to follow trends but I am very glad to see the end of those hideous Frankenstein boots, slutty animal print and ripped jeans. I may consider not wearing crossbody bags when bag snatchers go out of fashion but not before.
I really think fashion brands only come up with these things to shame us into buying more stuff. It’s good to see all the comments here from intelligent women who aren’t falling for it.

I also am an apple and I am only 5-1”. On me, wide-leg pants make me look even shorter! I prefer an ankle-length straight-leg pants. Quince does a fantastic one and I have purchased them in several colors. Love them! 🙋♀️🥰❤️👍‼️
I don’t get it …stores are full of button up cardigans, leopard prints and white tennis shoes…and I still see a lot of skinny jeans….I agree, wear what you feel best in, the fashion police aren’t after any of us.

I am interested in clothing outfits and I do a little research about trends. What’s trending helps me know what others might be buying, when I work a display or dress a mannequin. I like the button front cardigan, I own one zip front. But that is the only one I’ve found that fits me right. I wear cardigans, denim jackets and wool blazers. I enjoy your casual conversation with us, and your voice is soothing. (You could do audio books 😉)

Great video Cathy!! I love your take on what's in style and not. There's no way I'd wear those Herman Munster boots! I've lost too much weight so I could wear skinny/slimleg jeans. I'm not giving them up! No No Nay Nay! I have always refused to wear distressed jeans, I don't care for them at all, it takes me back to childhood times when to wear such clothing was just not done because it made a person look poor. I also like the animal prints as a way to 'pop' an outfit...I think pink and pastel colours are better suited to spring and summer, I'm with you on the jewel tones for the dreary fall and winter season. I disagree with a lot these too, but have come to realize that trends have everything to do with marketing and if "they" say "this is 'in' and that's 'out'", it's because they need to change things up to make money. Many of the things here are never going out of style, they are just being replaced for marketing purposes. Sure, there are updated versions, but at least where I live, I see a lot of classics and always will. You can probably tell I don't follow the trends! I look at them and do update pieces in my wardrobe when I know it's time, but I am not ditching half my closet because this year's trends will be "out" next year! Have to keep it in perspective.

I agree with button up cardigans being a classic. May I recommend you look at Sezane. Their Betty cardigan is very high quality and comes in so many colors. I own several. One is a deep wine which would be a nice blue red for you. Right now I'm wearing them as a lightweight jacket.
Also on the topic of jeans. I'm 71 and wear an 8. The wide leg vs skinny leg to me is a moot point. It's a preference. More important to me is the rise. I don't want any jeans or trousers that are low rise at all. I like a mid rise or high rise waist. Otherwise my blouses don't stay tucked in and I feel constricted with the usual muffin top.

I totally agree with you about skinny jeans and crossbody bags. The fashion police would have to prise both items away from me with a lot of kicking and screaming on my part! I also like leopardskin print, though as you say, in small doses.
At the very beginning of a successful year-long diet, I wore straight-leg pants. Friends said, "Boy, the weight is really coming off!" I hadn't yet lost an ounce.
Wide/relaxed leg looks nice in a flowy fabric (like gauze or chiffon) or a medium weight fabric that drapes nicely. Cotton/denim is sometimes too stiff/rigid for wide legs, especially if they're too wide & you are not tall. In jeans I like a Straight (not super skinny) Trouser or a Flare. I am top heavy (broad shoulders/big boobs) with narrower hips/thighs & sometimes I like a little extra fullness in my bottom half to look more balanced & not look like the literal letter T or H or a marshmallow on toothpicks :) I think the trick for those of us who are 5'4" or under, is not to go too wide in too stiff a fabric, especially if you don't wear a higher heel (which after foot/ankle surgery I cannot wear anymore) In general I avoid anything too oversized or too sausage casing/fitted. As a now plus sized person the fit & proportions are even more important. I am glad the oversized, too long jackets & tops have been replaced by "cropped" styles which are a better proportion for my height. If I go petite, the sleeves are too short 😅 & so are the pants. With higher waisted bottoms a shorter top is better imo. I personally hate fussing with tucking things in & blousing them all the time.

It seems that about 6 months after something is out, they are saying it is back in again. I just go with what is flattering and will keep my cross body bags, thank you very much. Also I like the look of skinny jeans tucked in tall boots. I prefer bootcut or slightly wide leg with other types of shoe (I am more of a pear shape so when I only like the look of a skinny on me when it is tucked in a boot because it balances my thighs by providing more visual weight at the bottom of my egg).
I love button up cardigans. I wear them all year and I will keep wearing them. I have never worn white blouses and I never will. I have never liked chunky boots. They may look good on a twenty year old tall and slim woman with slim ankles, but never on me. Cross body bags are a must.
I agree with your thoughts on many of these trends. The thing to keep in mind, these trends come and go so fast it makes one’s head swim. The “fashion” industry just wants to sell us more stuff, that end up in our charity bags. That is not good for anyone. Many of these items, like an animal print can just be put back in the closet until it’s day comes again, 2 yrs from now.
I heard that it’s the black and white sneakers that are out of style that’s a marketing ploy. That skinny jeans are out is just a rumor. I will not let go of my skinny jeans. I have a wide butt but thin legs.
Me too but I think skinny jeans just emphasize this but not in a good way. Straight leg is much better.
Button up anything is difficult for me. If it’s big enough to button across my bust, it’s too baggy everywhere else.
I have jeans of all kinds, and plan to wear them continuously depending on what I'm wearing on top. But I have really really enjoyed the wide leg jeans and cropped for my 5'2" height.
Several observations.... White trauners/tennis shoes....If you wear larger shoes(size 10),white makes you look like you're wearing clown shoes. Also,for travelers, white tennis shoes can mark you as an American.,especially in Europe.. Where pickpockets are very active. Same thing for cross body bags. Its all about safety.. No matter where you are. Slacks/pants....I'm all leg...why aren't ladies pants sized like mens'pants?? We need inseem selections....I've lost height in my spine, but not my legs. I don't and won't wear high water pants.
I'm the opposite of you. I have a long torso and short legs. I buy Capri pants to get ones that hit my ankle. I can't wear petites because waist to crotch is way too short.

Plus skinny jeans or straight leg jeans are so much convenient for our Canadian weather 😂

Boot cut trousers/jeans every time. So flatering for any body shape. Animal print-hell yes but only 1 item (that scarf you showed is cute) Wearing my spanx pants today & so very comfortable. I got size 14 but could have sized down to a 12. Nice video

I'm a plus sized 75 year old. I'm only 5 feet one inch tall so I have trouble finding anything that fits. Plus size clothes seem to be made for really tall women. Even high waisted short or petite pants come up to my boobs. Plus size tops often have shoulders that end way over my arms and armholes that start near my waist. I buy things that fit regardless of latest fashion.
I'm the same age as you, I like Talbot's , they have a petite plus. It's nice buying something that fits!
