Haha this stuff is my jam 😅
I'm more of a tech than a body guy, but I kinda like doing patch panels and based some tool purchases around the fact that I'd be doing this occasionally.
Mig, plasma cutter , belt sander and various cutting wheels and die grinders and whatnot.
Oh, and cardboard to help with the situations where you're making your own patches.
I can get em probably 75-80% acceptable for a real body guy to take over if needed.

    Try
After making your first over lap. then one clean cut with a
(metabo) cut off wheel through both panels.
    tac and finish welding.
    Practice on a scrap piece.

Do you have any videos on replacing a rear quarter panel with a replacement OEM panel ? The side with fuel filler door . I have a 03 ford explorer with wheel opening (arch ) rusted out . Bought replacement panel on line . I would like to use MULTI-PURPOSE PANEL ADHESIVE rather then welding . What are you thoughts on this ? Thank you . enjoy watching your videos very much . I'm a auto tech by trade ,but back in the early 90's i help a friend in need working for him in his body repair shop . Learned a lot from him but still just a rookie .

If the panel was installed with welds, that's probably the way to go as there may not be enough surface area to use adhesive. However, adhesive is very strong and I think it could be done. I'm glad you enjoy the videos - I'll try to keep some interesting ones coming :)

Do you always Mig your butt welds? Any more I have been using gas welds. Much softer to hammer smooth. Take care and keep up the good work!

All I've ever used is a MIG aside from brazing patches when I was young - that's how my dad taught me.

I have wanted to try ez-grind welding wire, my boss is too cheap to spend double money, but from my reading looks like would save a lot of grinding time. & I have used every process, in my first year of college MIG wasnt allowed, torch & metal finish only not even body filler, other than lead in seams. I had a Dinosaur of a teacher, that showed old ways, my second year I learned modern methods from his replacement when he retired, & I wouldnt trade my education for anything. & I have torch welded, brazed, MIG, TIG Stick welded, & of course Spot Welded, but never used the modern glues.

, I was wondering why when you got it close, that you didn't just mark the old rocker panel with a scratch awl when the new one was over top of the old one. Would have been real simple to get a precise fit without the guess work.🙂

    • @LakesideAutobody
      @LakesideAutobody  4 года назад +2

Good ? - You could do that - with out a problem and that probably work most of the the time and it is the right way. In this case though I wanted to weld exactly in that valley that is stamped into both panels - sort of a guide I could use on both panels - so I wanted to cut only the new to match the old. Basically didn't want to change the shape of the hole. Hope that's understandable.

@@LakesideAutobody I got what you were doing initially, just that when you had the new one close to fit, I would have then made a scribe line on the existing metal with the new rocker as a guide. Easy peasy 🙂

Fitting panels is very frustrating and time consuming especially if your impatient. With aftermarket panels the shapes and bends are almost always different so matching and lining up the panels can be very tricky. Most of the time if your impatient like me you carefully trim away for a while but eventually get tired of small trimming and just start cutting too much and end up with a panel thats way too small. I have heard some people will clamp the new panel over the old panel and use a very thin cut off wheel to cut both pieces at the same time and in theory you will end up with a even gap that is exactly the width of the cutting wheel but i have never had luck with that.

Thanks for watching Brian - it takes a bit of practice but after a bunch of times dong it you'll come up with some methods that work every time - keep at it :)
