McGill University's Soulstice A Cappella sings 'Hide And Seek' at the ICCA Quarterfinals 2007.
Arranged by: Clive Chang - www.clivechang.com
Soulstice placed 1st in the Quarterfinals, along with receiving the following awards: Best Choreography, Best Arrangement,
Best Solo, and Best Vocal Percussion.
Following this unbelievable achievement, Soulstice (the ONLY Canadian group in ICCA Semis) was placed 3rd in the North-eastern Region!
This piece was given best arrangment. =)
Having watched this video over a dozen times, there is no denying its power...Seeing that it won "Best Arrangement" leads me to believe that this talented group chose to perform it in a different key and not in the "wrong" key !
17 years later and I still get goosebumps from this performance! Our acapella group competed in the ICCA that year and while we gave it our best shot, Soulstice rightfully won with this performance. I also loved their rendition of "It's Raining Men," which they sang after they won. I'm so glad I found a recording of this! I was reminded of it when I was driving and the local college radio station played Hide and Seek by Imogen Heap. I never forgot this beautiful rendition after all these years!
This is great... love it.
Holy mother, the "blood and tears" notes were as pure as I've ever heard them...wow, I'm in awe.
that high note is breathtaking.
I've listened to it at least 50 times already.
This was absolutely beautiful. The choreography award was well deserved, and the sense of volume changes was amazing!
Absolutely flawless.
Oh WOW! Goosebumps! Well done guys! x
This song is so pensive... Such a beautiful melodic statement. A transportive interpretation, that keeps to the intent of the original faithfully. Wonderfully done, all the best!
Wow... just haunting and beautiful. I've heard a lot of a cappella groups on youtube, but you guys are the first that don't suck. Amazing volume control! Crescendos just chill me to the bone. Good work!
It's nice to hear an arrangement which isn't purely a direct copy of the augmented chords over 5ths.You really need to watch your balance within the group, the perfect way to get good balance is to really listen to the main melody, and be sensitive to whether the harmonies enhance or detract from certain points in the melody. At certain points in this piece, whoever is singing the third above the main melody and falling down to the tonic is too loud, especially at the beginning.
she is amazing, the modules are amazing, her use of the modules is amazing, and the composition and arrangement are amazing.
i have a brass version i did myself on soundcloud.
i'm blown away by all these independent choral arrangements, and this one is very well performed. gotta love that soprano nailing the top notes so cleanly.
This is one of the better vocal arrangements of this amazing song I've heard! Good job!
wow i think this is the best choir version i have heard of this. very nicely done, with a lot of very talented vocalists.
This is the best one I've heard so far, wow. Simply amazing.
You know, I wasn't sure I liked this version at first, in comparison to the first song, but I've grown to really like it! The more I listen, the more I appreciate its subtleties. Excellent job!
I'm in love with every single one of them. Amazing arrangement.
Epic work guys. You have done yourselves, the arranger, and Imogen very proud.
I like it so much you get a smiley face :)
This is my favorite version ive seen on you tube. i loved it. and i agree with the guy down there. the soprano is outstanding. the choreorgraphy is a nice touch as well. =)
Definitely the best of the youtube covers.
GOOSEBUMPS! This is great. and the soprano: fantastic.
This is my favourite Soulstice song. I wasn't there for the 2007 quarterfinals, but heard in from backstage in the 2006 edition... kudos!
This is a beautiful arrangement. I listen to it and it makes me feel good every time!
THAT is the BEST version ever! it's crazy. i love it.
BEST version of this on RUclips!
AMAZING... best cover i've heard so far. well done, very few people pull this song off but you just gave me goosebumps!!
I'm having one of I'm-so-lucky-to-be-putting-this-into-my-ears moments. Beautiful job (:
A little top heavy.
But amazing nonetheless.
you guys are amazing. Imogen is my absolute favoirite artist and you definatly do her song justice! Im a choir boy from way back and i can really appriciate this performance. :)
i thought it sounded very different from the original, but the best bits were kept and the more harsh bits, hav become softer and clearer. i loved it, it made me cry. i hope something like this is sung at my funeral. x
wow, this is truly amazing. beautiful. very well done.
That's so beautiful!! Congratulation!!
That was absolutely wonderful!
Captivating. Simply amazing... it gave me chills.
2:27 is CRAZY! Choreography and shriek are GREAT! Greetings from Brazil ;)
beautiful guys! a great tribute to a wonderful artist :)
@terminatesatmorden I also agree. From this recording, the female voice over the melody is overpowering, but the harmonies in general are awesome.
i love this song!
beautiful song, beautifly sang!
the "they were here first" has to be SO much stronger. it's crucial
other than that, amazing.
that girl who sings the high notes has such a strong voice to support those notes. I was really impressed that she didn't seem to be holding back.
she just let it go.
beautiful singer.
they all are.
Beautiful!
Beautiful!
Beautiful!
That high note was so beautiful!
Best so far, great job.
ohgall, this is gorgeous!! Kudos to each and every one in the choir!
~Imp~
This is the best version on the net! I would love to choreograph for this group.
That was phenominal! OMG! They sounded amazing! WoW! 5/5
This is art. when they sing this composition like this, they are making their own music. it stands alone - there is no need to compare with imogen heap's wonderful vocoder original.
great job!
absolutley beautiful!
The girl in the back hitting the high notes is AMAZING.
beautiful!! congratulations!!!
why is it that all good female singers are stunningly beautiful
You guys are freaking godly. Ik its not Imogen but still its AMAZING. Keep it up guys.
That was SICK.
I got chill bumps.
the "blood and tears" part was completely amazing. couldn't have done it any better.
this seriously gave me the shivers.
its a damn good cover
The high note is amazing...replayed that one line probably 20 times.
I think this arrangement is good. ^^ It's different, but that doesn't mean it's bad or just "okay".
that was absolutely phenomenal
Holy Crap, I forgot to breathe, I got chills, AHH, this was amazingggg!!!
That was great, easy listening, thank you for sharing
Yeah I know! She must be incredibly talented and this is probably the best accapella I have seen.
this is beautiful. i love this song.
Beautifully performed
oh.....my.....gosh......can you say angelic?
i'm freaking out right now
that was awesome
that high note gave me chills all the way down my spine.
I dunno who ever said that she was too high but she hit it perfectly. This was amazing choir. They really did the song justice. Very VERY mature voices.
Great job all members!!! you guys sounded awesome (y) 5stars
Very beautiful!
That girl in the middle hit that high note so flawlessly! Even coming down from it was sooo smooth... just gorgeous. Mmm.
This is so awesome!!!
Hey you guys! amazing cover, really. I'm singing and arranging for a danish a cappella choir called "groovy voices" (soon we change the name to "lyt", which is danish for listen). Anyways, I was wondering, if you were interested in lending or selling us this arrangement? I would love if my choir would sing this awesome song - and your version is the best I have ever seen! Greetings from Denmark
Beautiful!
this is so beautiful, it made me cry like a baby :D
this song's a personal favorite. kudos to everyone especially ur soprano who can really nail that note at "blood and tears". bravo! xD
this is gorgeous...
you guys are great, keeping singing.
Absolutely wonderful
@serafinic there's nothing crazy about it - it's called a harmonizer and the way it works is actually extremely simple. On the other hand, I'd say it's pretty damn crazy that 12 singers can recreate this song, despite the fact that they made it more harmonious than disharmonious compared to the original. It takes a lot of practice, a lot of coordination and a huge amount of skill to be able to do what these guys did.
I love the original, but this is the best a capella version I've found so far.
i really like the dynamics, but like everyone else said i wish there were dissonant chords. But i don't blame the singers or the composer, it's all part of the interpretation, and as a musician i appreciate it. Good job. :) (even though this videos is 4 years old already :b)
this is the best a capella of hide and seek ive seen by a choir. at the beginning the sopranos were a little to soft. but over all it was awesome. and one tenor in particular stood out and he has an amazing voice. good job. oh and i was wondering if maybe you could tell me where you got the arrangement. our choir is thinking about using this song and were looking for a very good arrangement.
OMG!!!!! O.O so beautiful!!
Fantastic!
definitely one of, if not the best version of this song
well, u did really good!! that high whistle tone note sounded amazing!!! and i had figured that u guys had made it higher...cuz the basses were WAY down there in their voices...and it did sound higher now that i think about it....wow...waste of a comment? hahaha
yeah at first the different key threw me off but I got over it, and decided that this is gorgeous. love it! I want to be in a group that would sing this song. lol none of my choirs sing this kind of music.
very good!! i got the shivers too
Agreed. My friend (in my A Capella group) went to high school with Yuri, who was in (and arranged for) the Achordants.
@emyjaymac You did pretty well though!!! Considering this was a live performance, no editing, its amazing! Great voices
scinut1 is right. what you could be hearing is the transposition. we had to transpose it to fit our choir's voices & although the transposition CAN (or maybe did) change the feel of the music, it does not change the chord structure (aka: consonant vs. dissonant).
Amazingly beautiful :) .. Angelic
omg that was amazing!!
After suffering through some really scary amateur performances of this song here on RUclips... it was nice to find this one. Very nice... not perfect, but it was delightful.
i wish i could get a recording...
Wow, this is really good!
Well I look forward to auditioning when I get to McGill next year.
great job guys
You guys are a very talented group!
The only thing I don't like about it is the lack of stresses on some parts. For example, at 1:07-1:09ish "that's heavy"... listen to the original, and then listen to this. There's a definite lack of stress. Also, about 3:00-3:10 is a little messed up because of the lack of stresses on some parts.
Don't get me wrong, you guys did a great job, I'm just trying to give you some constructive criticism :)
Keep up the good work!
I'm confused!! Sounds great :) But also makes the Vocoder in the original sound extreamily complex to create such a similarity from one voice... This sounds completely amazing, just as I would have predicted a choir would achieve from this song... It's also helped me to realize some of the artifacts in a Vocoder are more natural than I gave them credit for, I hear the same happening in this version.
@LProcker9798 You're right. The dissonant chords are what tug on your heartstrings and make your chest feel tight. This is pretty but lacks the emotional impact. Then again, when you've got several people of different ranges singing together, they tend to harmonize naturally.
Unique arrangement! Are you a jazz group primarily or contemporary? I like what you did with the song.
