The truest of all truths. I have just heard a *brilliant* idea for a Superman story, knowing that it will never become a comic, or a movie or tv-series... and I'm ok with that. Because, just as you said, I just saw it all inside my head.
Here’s what will happen: Someone will be inspired enough to storyboard and draw out each panel. Then someone else will read that comic and they will film it. It won’t just be one person either. There will be several. Mark my words. Max Landis realized that he didn’t have to pitch to studios. He just had to pitch to budding artists who could be inspired by his enthusiasm (which seems inexhaustible).
twoegg shuffle Didn't say it was wrong, I love the guy. He's just very excited about his own stuff, and sometimes he just thinks that his stuff is the best, but still, he's great.
+Atte Timonen I love that, too, because it's actually a much more legitimate excuse for Azrael to be Batman instead of Dick Grayson, considering that Dick is taking care of Bruce and helping him train Clark. As opposed to doing his own thing with the Teen Titans... because....
Just discovered this. Holy fuck. He gets Superman and the DC universe better than most people and certainly better than the people making DC movies. Truly genius.
I've seen this video maybe... 10 to 15 times in the past two years? Honestly, it's like re-watching a movie, and every single time I re-watch it it just keeps getting better and better. I even wrote a small 30 page book using notebook paper and sketches using this concept (I took some liberties of course). Seriously, this would be the *best* Superman story. Just, the best. Cliche? Yeah, in some places, but it _works._ That, and at least, IMO, the cliches are done rather tastefully and not annoying.
batman88891 Let's be honest though. Most Superman stories are cliché stories. I like to think that if it's a good story it's not a factor and if it's bad it's a giant factor.
I don't know that it's that they don't know what to do with movies, but probably more that they hire people to tell stories, then don't trust them and meddle way too much. Granted, Snyder has a bit of a track record of being more of a visual shooter than a story teller, but even his extended cut of BvS (although still having narrative and conceptual problems) at least made some sort of sense as a movie. Suicide Squad on the other hand had a really solid story teller/director and they ended up panicking and going with an edit of the film done by a company that edits trailers. You hire these people to make these particular movies for a reason. Let them tell the story and mostly stay out of it. (you being the studio in this case and not you you haha)
I mean, I love Max Landis as much as the next guy, but he's not the Kevin Feige type to handle such huge universes. Creative freedom on a DC superhero movie would be fucking sick though.
+garrett1999o3 I just want him to have creative input in the dc movies. maybe someone else can handle all the continuity and make sure that there's no overlap.
I loved it, it was clever, it was witty, it was human, it put the Man before the Super and made Superman better for it. It was a guy dealing with disappointment, his true heritage disappointed him, the love of his life disappointed him, people disappointed him, he was a disappointment to himself. There was no Deux ex Machina powers or items, he solved everything directly or indirectly thanks to the people around him, who came together and reminded him of how strong he was, not just as a super hero, but as a person. It's the story of a guy's entire, everything he thought he knew, just falling to pieces and him having to learn to pick them back up. It's didn't feel like the drama was the point, but that it was part of the overall story, an important part, but it felt like how a story would naturally go. Granted, this is just a story a guy told and I'm probably getting very far ahead of my self, but still. This is Superman done right, or more accurately, as my personal favorite, it's not all about the powers, and not melodrama, it's a very human story, very relatable, but within the context of something truly epic. +SchoolhouseTechno It was more of a demonstration as part of my intro to storytelling lesson for AP Freshman English. Wanted students to see how something as simple as one person talking about stuff can really engross you into a compelling narrative.
Considering American Alien is probably the best Superman series in over a decade (possibly ever, history will tell) It's almost physically painful that this isn't going to happen.
+Retiredmagician This is not 1 movie, it's too long. Also you'd have the problem of properly introducing the universe. Just think about setting up the current situation of the batman story line. That would probably need a movie of it's own. If i were to guess, this story with proper setup would need at least five movies.
This is probably the third time I've watched this video and it manages to give me goosebumps every single time. You're a great story teller. This was absolutely brilliant and I wish someday DC comes to its senses and green-lights this project as a separate graphic novel or series of sorts...during this whole multiversity-convergence thing would probably be the best time to do it but I guess that's not gonna happen..but who knows...maybe a couple of years from now. Super violent animated movie?
I don't care if this is released exactly the way Max describes it in this video. No surprises. I would buy every version of this that comes out. This is exactly the comic about Superman that needs to come out. (Besides the current release by Max!)
Honestly this shit was some of the most amazing story telling. I immediately called the brainiac reveal with the technology being introduced and still got hyped the moment he said his name.
I like it how all the destruction happns whe Superman is absent, in the phantom zone. All the fights he had later were limited to himself and his opponent.
This is the first thing that actually made me terrified of Doomsday. Why didn't this get made?!?! You should do this with the characters from your comic american alien. Seriously. Just wow.
Your intro was basically the opening to BvS with Bruce witnessing the destruction and everyone blaming Superman. A lot of your pitch is reminiscent of BvS. Although this pitch has a lot going on. Which isnt a bad thing. I dig it.
As someone who was literally raised around love for Superman, spanning from George Reeves to awful teen Smallville, and being absolutely in love with every incarnate of Clark, this is by far my favorite version. I can honestly say this is my favorite Superman story, so thank you so much for sharing your amazing story telling abilities, writing and understanding of beloved characters and turning into one of the most immersive stories I have ever heard.
Holy crap. That was amazing. I really want to see some concept art or something for that because that would legitimately be the best thing to happen to Supes since All-Star.
Dude, you are a fucking genious, ever since Batman vs Superman I realised that I´m am pretty much the only one in my group who likes superman, of course I told them that they didn´t knew the character well enough and that Superman actually has the potential to be a really great and relatable character, you just need the right story to prove it, and you just confirmed it, Great story you came up with
This is an amazing example of traditional storytelling, while also illustrating the point that in many ways superheroes are our modern mythology. Tales of the gods, spoken between mortals, just as we've done for many thousands of years. Thank you.
Also the whole justice league concept with each of them getting wrecked, a) unrealistic concept wise and budget b) never really has a payoff and introduced WAAAAAAY too many tertiary characters. Needs to be reeled in a lot! Still love you Max!
+Uptomyknees He still has a valid point.Well, kinda. If this concept ever came to fruition and rebooted the death of Superman arc in year long issue run and later reprinted in a comic book form, it probably wouldn't be canon, right? Because as you explained at the very beginning of the video, you wanted to tell your perfect version of the story and NEW 52, Final Crisis etc. prevented you from doing that. But what really makes it an elseworld's story anyway is the fact that you killed off half of the main members of the Justice league. Wonder Woman, Green Lantern, Flash, Aquaman. All dead! Then you have Bats telling him this can never happen again and they move on to forming the Justice League? How many members are left standing exactly? I don't know man, it feels it's gonna be pretty fucking lonely up in that Watchtower. Zod had most of the villains in Metropolis dead and displayed as trophies in the Fortress too. What about Brainiac? Is he gone for good after Zod K.O'd him with one punch in this story by the way? Don't get me wrong, I am not criticizing, your idea and your whole take on the thing is absolutely fantastic, it just needs a few things changed and improved if it's gonna be considered a canon story. But if you don't give a fuck about that shit and you wanna tell your version then i totally get it. This has so many parts I already love just hearing you describe them with such passion it already feels like the best Superman story ever told. The way you recreate the origin of Brainiac, Zod's reveal and confrontation with Superman, Area 51 being a Kryptonian crash site lol XD. Especially the part where Clark is learning tactics and how to properly fight from the goddamn Batman and stops punching like a wussie, loved the way you added Nightwing with the limo scene to this whole thing by the way, it was hilarious. Oh i could go on and on forever but i am afraid this is turning into an essay kinda fast. ( also little sidenote here: Supes IS punching harder and stronger than Batman, BUT!!! Bats has been training and doing this for decades even before becoming the Batman so he is doing it more skillfully for now at least and also BECAUSE HE IS BATMAN!!! just joking hahaha) Anyway, i really hope this doesn't remain just an idea, it feels it has so much potential, it could easily attract the best artists to make this happen and it would sell like hotcakes. It would be such a shame to go to waste.
+Jai Grant Budget? Too many characters? think you missed the part where this wasnt a movie, but a weekly year long comic book series. There's text at the beginning that explain this, and throughout the pitch Max uses words like "panels" and "comic book."
I mean, he never said he _died_, But he ain't seeing shit for a while until some magic hoo-ha gives him his eyes back or he gets mechanical implants that make him look all badass and scary ala Jason Momoa
I cannot form words to adequately describe how fantastic this is. Hands down, the greatest Superman. . .anything, that I have had the privilege of experiencing. I hope you get to actually do something with this, or work with DC in some official form.
Good job, Landis. The passion of someone (you) doing something he actually like and loves can be felt, i wish you all the best. The world needs more people like you. Good luck Max.
watching/listening to this youtube video, has been more entertaining and emotional than almost any novel, graphic novel or comic book ive ever read. Besides being an amazing writer, your just an overall amazing story teller. Hearing you tell this and all the emotion and excitement in your voice, I was able to visualize every part in my head as you said it. you are just soo passionate and it comes through. The excitement, the awe, sadness, fear every thing comes through in your voice and how you tell it. just fucking epic and amazing. this video meant alot to me. thank you
Wow. I fell asleep with my headphones in on a playlist which has this on it a few videos in, and I dreamt the whole thing as Max explained it, I was LIVING it. That was epic! (I did take some 5 HTP and some modafinil before I fell asleep though maybe that helped)
this could easily be adapted to film. Lower the number of comic book references. still show a lot of the more iconic ones like aquaman, wonder woman, flash, etc, but no blue beetle, no fire and ice, etc. Nightwing is still needed for plot reasons, but the movie version could easily be the same as this just wiht the references lowered
So, have you seen Max Landis' Doomsday in a concept art or something? Do you know what he looks like? I understand this story of Superman could lead to a good comic, but it is practically inadaptable in cinema.
For someone who has never been much of a Superman fan, this is genuinely one of the most intriguing story lines I've ever heard for a comic series/saga Well done sir....well done
Wow this is one of the best pitches I've ever heard. Why is this not a live action movie or even an animated movie. This is what Batman V Superman should have been.
+SpiderboyN2Jesus No... no it's not... you are allowed to do whatever it takes to save your own life as long as you aren't actively murdering people. Running fits under that scenario. Collateral damage does not, otherwise you have to charge every victim of every mass murder for not actively running at the killer to try to stop them, because them running away led to that murderer having the chance to kill someone else.
Lol, this is a special case; the destruction of a city and the loss of countless lives were the DIRECT result of Lex running away. That's definitely reckless endangerment.
SpiderboyN2Jesus uh.. no.. He was doing the exact same thing as my scenario. He was running away from a mass murder, period. He didn't actively try to kill anyone. He was running to save his life and a serial killer followed him. It is not reckless endangerment when what you are doing is the ONLY way for you to survive and your specific actions aren't putting others at risk. You are NOT responsible for the actions of OTHER people, especially not serial killers trying to kill you. Everyone has the right to protect their own lives. You have not given a single reason why this is different than my scenario. You might as well be charging the jews who escaped from concentration camps with murder since their running directly led to the nazi's killing other jews who were left behind.
Lol, his actions DID put others at risk. Doomsday is a monster with no other purpose than to kill. If Lois Lane was smart enough to realize that Doomsday was only attacking people around him and would stop if there was no else around him to kill, then there's NO WAY--ZERO chance--that the genius, Lex Luthor didn't figure that out. But he didn't care. Doomsday is not human being. He is not a serial killer, and he is not the Nazis. Your examples do relate to Doomsday in any way, shape or fashion. They're simply incomparable.
I agree with you as long as you mean it in terms of how much money their movies make. It's not like Marvel is objectively superior in terms of quality of said movies' plot and characters.
*slowly goes down and rolls up in a ball* I've just had the experience of a lifetime. Max Landis you Bloody Legend!! You are a beautiful man. If this was a actual Comic book I would be all over that. This is Beauty bro this is what a Superman story should be like. Again Max Landis I could hear you talk for hours and not be bored. Your stories are really interesting. I mean there could be other writers who could be like you but because you share your experience on RUclips it just makes me respect you even more!!
Can we go back in time and have his "American Alien" a movie in place of Man of Steel and this pitch combined with another of his from Movie Fights in place of Batman v Superman instead?
I really like how simple Doomsday method of destroying is. He sees. He destroys. Next. He sees. He destroys. And so on. Living things naturally run away from danger, so Doomsday will always have something new to kill. Unless you follow Lois advice in a far away area.
@@RaptorJesus This Doomsday is a thousand times better than the ridiculous "Always comes back from death mega super ultra super special awesome mc can only be killed by the entropy that destroys the universe at the end of time" version they made for the comics.
This. Was. EPIC. Had me GRIPPED from start to finish. Now, I know it's a comic book series idea, but I think this would be amazing to watch as a movie. Thank you Max!
Seriously. Batman and Superman reacting to each other like Tarzan and Jane: *batears?* *super-pose?* would be the most memorable moment in dc cinematic history!
@Justin Gary Dawn Of Justice does what Max wants, adapts comics like Birthright, and actually explores these characters in a real way. I don't understand why you're dismissing that
this. is. brilliant. just visualizing this while you told the story gave me chills. this is worthy of a film and at the very least a three comic series.
God dame it! This world NEEDS YOU MAX. Where are you man. Looking back at this video brings back memories of a dream I had, the dream of this actually being in a movie theater! This is Gold my friend. This idea would bring DC's SOUL to life. DC would be better with you man. Honestly. Just wish to see this on the big screen like I did in my dream, it was one to remember.
I think BvS put the death of Superman in pretty much the best place it could possibly go story-wise, considering he'd been going through such a long personal struggle the whole film and it symbolised how strongly he reaffirmed his resolve. Doomsday's origins don't matter, he's always just been a big monster used to facilitate the death of Superman. Considering the movie universe, it made sense. And was definitely better than the comic.
Max. MAX. WOW... I was moved FAR more by this PITCH, than I was at any moment in Batman V Superman. At every turn you fucking nailed this story. THIS SHIT. You did your fucking work and it paid off, the love you have for these characters shows off in spades and I pray that this story, this EXACT story, if it becomes a comic, if the art is fucking A grade, it'll be up there, as one of the greatest of all time. Holy fuck Max. You nailed it.
Great video, extremely excited for American Alien. This guy is a fantastic writer and story-teller, explain to me why M. Night Shamalamadingdong is still directing movies but this guy can't get a comic pushed?
Oh my god Max Landis, what a great idea. I would love to read/watch any superhero media you write. Don't be ashamed to fight for your ideas, we fucking need them.
Bravo Max!! That was so unbelievably captivating. By far the best the iteration of superman I've ever heard. I can only imagine how amazing this would have been if it were to come to fruition. I came here after seeing you on Kinda Funny but I'm now a true landisverse fan. Cannot wait to read American alien once it finished.
Instead of Mon-El, Zod should have told him that he was actually Jor-El. The audience would buy it and the eventual reveal would have been so much more gut-wrenching. I don’t think anyone would buy that he’s just some random Kryptonian, but they’d suspend their suspicion if they think that somehow Clark’s real father survived all along
When the Smallville show was a thing, I always thought it would be interesting to see a Bruce-on-the-farm scenario. I've been obsessed with the idea ever since. I adore that facet of your pitch, thank you Max.
Oh shit, you just made Superdouche interesting to me for the first time ever! Awesome pitch, man. Cool to watch someone else go nerd-berzerk about comics, too. :D I enjoyed this immensely and I would watch the heck out of that movie. Even if it would just be to watch Supes get pummeled around, give up and then be tutored by the actual hero.
A Kryptonite shard could be carried in a small, lead box, so that Superman could safely just shove the box into Zod. The lead wouldn't penetrate, but the Kryptonite would. Imagine being stabbed with an ice pick inside a paper bag. The bag would be torn away, but the ice pick would kill you. Luthor could also put Kryptonite slivers into lead bullets. Superman would not be able to see the slivers because the lead would block his x-ray vision, so he would have no reason to dodge out of the way. When the bullets hit, the lead would be stopped, but the Kryptonite would penetrate his skin.
Dude this is incredible! I love the entire idea so much. Honestly; I'm an aspiring comic artist and it would be a dream come true to illustrate for a story like this. Well done sir.
My dad introduced me to comics with one of the issues of the death and return of superman. He's gone as of August, but thanks for writing this and putting it out
we dont need a movie, we just saw it in our head
I'd much rather have a comic miniseries, but if Max could be screenwriter and director of a movie it would be EPIC
The truest of all truths. I have just heard a *brilliant* idea for a Superman story, knowing that it will never become a comic, or a movie or tv-series... and I'm ok with that. Because, just as you said, I just saw it all inside my head.
American alien is a great prequel to this
Here’s what will happen:
Someone will be inspired enough to storyboard and draw out each panel.

DUDE!!! Love your Idea for Superman. You need to talk to DC, WB, or CW. SOMEONE! This project has to be done.
That was the greatest thing I've watched on RUclips since the Plinkett reviews!! Thank you so much for that!!
I watched this video like a gazillion times. I'm really excited about your new Superman miniseries.
Also the whole justice league concept with each of them getting wrecked, a) unrealistic concept wise and budget b) never really has a payoff and introduced WAAAAAAY too many tertiary characters. Needs to be reeled in a lot!
Still love you Max!
***** it's a comic you silly guy
read the opening text hahaha
Uptomyknees I always drive by Sunset Gower studios on my way to LACC's Theatre Academy. What a trip.
***** As for A) That is literally what happened in the original Death of Superman story. B) it's a comic.
Bats has been training and doing this for decades even before becoming the Batman so he is doing it more skillfully for now at least and also BECAUSE HE IS BATMAN!!! just joking hahaha)
Anyway, i really hope this doesn't remain just an idea, it feels it has so much potential, it could easily attract the best artists to make this happen and it would sell like hotcakes. It would be such a shame to go to waste.
+Jai Grant Budget? Too many characters? think you missed the part where this wasnt a movie, but a weekly year long comic book series. There's text at the beginning that explain this, and throughout the pitch Max uses words like "panels" and "comic book."
"Aquaman's really strong, people don't give him enough credit."
*Immediately blinds and kills Arthur Curry*
I mean, he never said he _died_, But he ain't seeing shit for a while until some magic hoo-ha gives him his eyes back or he gets mechanical implants that make him look all badass and scary ala Jason Momoa
I cannot form words to adequately describe how fantastic this is.
Hands down, the greatest Superman. . .anything, that I have had the privilege of experiencing.
I hope you get to actually do something with this, or work with DC in some official form.
Nah, it's the best this way, in our own minds.
(I did take some 5 HTP and some modafinil before I fell asleep though maybe that helped)
had the same and am regreting it doesn't exist at least on the big screen. Damn !
Sure this sounds amazing. But instead we got Superman punching a cave troll. Fire Snyder, give the keys to Landis. Save DC.
pitch for a comic, not a movie.
...Fire Snyder anyway a hire ladis, guy clearly knows way more about story telling then snyder.
this could easily be adapted to film.
It's the hulk painted grey with greasy rocker hair and bone spurs. He has a whole GD video with hobbits in it talking about it.
It became a sort of habit of mine, to open this video in a "background" tab and simply listen to it every couple of days.
Never gets old. These pitch videos are like cave drawings to be discovered. Smart, epic, funny, moving, all with minimal strokes. Thank you.
For someone who has never been much of a Superman fan, this is genuinely one of the most intriguing story lines I've ever heard for a comic series/saga
Well done sir....well done
Wow this is one of the best pitches I've ever heard. Why is this not a live action movie or even an animated movie. This is what Batman V Superman should have been.
I don't think it's illegal to run for your life from a killer monster from another planet/dimension.
+Mr. Terrific It is if it endangers countless lives.
SpiderboyN2Jesus
uh..
This is amazing. Thank you so much for sharing it with us.
I wish you could write the justice league stuff, so maybe DC could compete with Marvel.
James Gunn should have hired you to write the new Superman cause damn this was amazing!
Can we go back in time and get this made in place of Batman v Superman?
+The Ponderer ikr!
Can we go back in time and have his "American Alien" a movie in place of Man of Steel and this pitch combined with another of his from Movie Fights in place of Batman v Superman instead?
+The Ponderer I liked BvS, but I would fully support this
No because BvS is a better story than this
I really like how simple Doomsday method of destroying is.
He sees. He destroys. Next. He sees. He destroys. And so on.
Living things naturally run away from danger, so Doomsday will always have something new to kill. Unless you follow Lois advice in a far away area.
Somehow, making Doomsday *more simple* makes him *more interesting*.
@@RaptorJesus This Doomsday is a thousand times better than the ridiculous "Always comes back from death mega super ultra super special awesome mc can only be killed by the entropy that destroys the universe at the end of time" version they made for the comics.
0:49 "Industry people are shady"
They sure are, Max
This. Was. EPIC. Had me GRIPPED from start to finish.
Now, I know it's a comic book series idea, but I think this would be amazing to watch as a movie.
Thank you Max!
Great, I can feel the passion that you have for your work on this story. Thank you very much, you're amazing.
While I was listening to this a thunder and lightning storm started. Made for one epic listening experience.
Doomsday, Brainiac and Zod all in one tale.....fucking genius!
Seriously. Batman and Superman reacting to each other like Tarzan and Jane: *batears?* *super-pose?* would be the most memorable moment in dc cinematic history!
This video literally made me tear up. The story you crafted was masterful. This needs to be the sequel to American Alien.
How awesome it is. Another session of rewatching Landis's videos.
27:50 I would die happy if I saw that in comic/animated form.
The closest we got was World's Finest, where they both figure each out pretty quickly in their own way.
What Dawn of Justice should have been.
No. Dawn of Justice is a much different and better movie
THE CONFRONTATION WITH ZOD MIXED WITH PORTAL TWO MUSIC MADE ME OVERLY EMOTIONAL 😭
This is excellent
This story handled Doomsday way better than Batman V Superman did. In fact, it handles EVERYTHING better than Batman V Superman did.
Things in Batman V Superman could not be handled in a 2 hour and a half movie.
+ConiFir BvS is a good movie
Not really. BvS does everything better
@@supermovies4625 That's why the extended cut is 3 hours long
YOU ARE A GENIUS!!!! YOU ARE AWESOME!!! I LOVE CHRONICLE I LOVE THE WAY YOU THINK I REALLY WANT TO DO SCREENWRITING AND DIRECTING WHEN IM OLDER!!!!
Max. MAX.
Night Shamalamadingdong is still directing movies but this guy can't get a comic pushed?
nashforcash hollywood sucks dick thats why
Observer Alternative Straight up.
holy crap it was like i was watching a movie.... i love max landis and his work
I'm watching this for the second time. Is it that fucking good.
I watched the whole thing and then I had to go back to my life.
Great. Now my first reaction whenever I see Superman do awesome shit will always be "Holy Tostito".
I would love it if DC had a comic line similar to Marvel's Ultimate comics where Landis could take the lead and make this happen.
Landis should've done Superman Earth One.
I may have watched this 10+ times now.
Watched this numerous times. I would have loved to read this comic!! Keep the pitches coming!
Dude this is incredible! I love the entire idea so much. Honestly; I'm an aspiring comic artist and it would be a dream come true to illustrate for a story like this. Well done sir.
“Because he crawls away really fast--he’s Superman”
😂😂🙏
"plastic man gets ripped in half" xD
+saltyninja ikr, Ilove hpow casually he says it too XD
I lost it at "Holy tostito!" XD
My dad introduced me to comics with one of the issues of the death and return of superman. He's gone as of August, but thanks for writing this and putting it out
I love the hell out of your enthusiasm, man. You speak to the nerd in us all!
This is damn good story telling.
