How I Pre-condition the Environment for Profitable Mushroom Farming

  • Mushroom growing and farming required the atmosphere to be at a correct level at all times. This means getting the correct humidity, co2 levels, temperature, and lighting to suit the growth of mushrooms. To achieve this I use a pre-conditioning room. This room is used to adjust the temperature and humidity levels prior to the air getting pumped through into the fruiting rooms.
    Larger farms over seas use and Air Handling Unit, but I was unable to find one small enough for out farm, so I made my own pre-conditioning chamber. The chamber is made from an externam fridge/chiller unit, that had a commercial heap pump or air conditioning unit inside. It also features a humidifier, and a humidity probe to pre-humidify the atmosphere to around 70%. This ensures the air is warm and partially humid, and decreases the cooling effect that happens when the air enters the fruiting chambers and cools further.

    Thanks for the video on the Pre-Con Room, question for you. with that heat pump you have how much temp fluctuation do you get from your set point and do you keep the pre-con room temperature the same as your grow rooms? my heat pumps seem to have a 3 degree fluctuation and Im wondering if there is a way to tighten this switching to a pre conditioning room. Thanks for posting all the great content, keep up the good work.

    Really enjoying these videos, keep up the great work it’s really inspirational.
    Just had a couple of questions about your setup:
    1) With the pre-conditioning room, is there anything preventing the warm humidified air from escaping from the outside air intake/heat exchanger instead of through the fruiting room duct?
    2) Also regarding the heat exchanger, I imagine that the intention is to pre-warm the outside air before it reaches the AC. Just curious how this will eventually be set up? Is the plan to have the heat exchanger coil hooked up to a small boiler system? Or will you be somehow recycling excess heat from within the fruiting room or somewhere else?

    • @OakandSpore
      @OakandSpore  Год назад +1

      1. No, there is constant suction from the fruiting rooms, which means air will only flow inwards through the heat exchanger.
      2. I have a heat exchanger on the exhaust of the fruiting rooms. The plan is to capture energy from the fruiting room exhausts, and put it into the air going into the pre-conditioning room intake.

    Hi First of I just want to say that I absolutely love your videos, they have been an invaluable source for someone like me who hopes to start a mushroom farm soon. I just have a few questions:
    1) Are the filters you used HEPA or something else? And do you use the same type of filters on your intake and exhaust?
    2) How much do the filters you use, reduce the flow rate of your fans?
    That's all for now :)
    Cheers!

    • @OakandSpore
      @OakandSpore  Год назад +1

      No, the filters in the pre-conditioning are not hepa. They are used to get pollen and other dust out of the air. my fans are controlled by an automation controller, and speed up when the co2 gets too high. If the filters slow the air flow, the co2 will build up, and the fans will spin faster. It's not noticeable.

    Hi! I love your videos!
    I have one question, if I have a recuperator in fruiting room do I still need a ventilator?
    CO2 is measured and recouperator cleans air when certain amount is triggered.
    So do I need to move air if co2 in room is low..?
    I can't figure it out on my own so that's why I'm asking xD

    Hey Tom! Love your videos! Your farm's success is quite inspiring. I wonder how you are doing with it all. Do you still enjoy the business or has scaling up started to cause burnout? Do you have any advice for someone looking to scale up in a similar fashion?

    • @OakandSpore
      @OakandSpore  Год назад +3

      I don't really burn out. I get tired sometimes, and take an afternoon off here and there, spend some times with my children etc. I really enjoy what I do, I start work at 6am each day, and can easily work till 6pm. Working long hours is easier when you do it from home. I can go inside and have breakfast with the kids, lunch with the wife etc.
      I love business, and will run businesses for the rest of my life. If it wasn't mushrooms it would be something else.
      We have a lot more growth still to come. Scaling can be challenging, just remember to allocate capital correctly. Grow the market, ensure you have enough room (facility), get equipment to increase production, and get staff to do the daily tasks so you can focus on the more important aspects of the business.
      Thanks for the support, and take care.

    really good information as I plan my entry into the mushroom market here in Southern Ontario Canada, about an hour west of Toronto, over the next year or so. My intention is to build self contained mushroom grow farms for use in urban backyards so people can drop them in place and grow mushrooms. Similar climate here in southern Ontario. I have been wondering about the pre conditioning of air for the incubation and fruiting room. I'm just wondering the size of your preconditioning room as compared to the rooms that use this preconditioned air. and how often you cycle out the atmosphere of the fruiting and incubation room?

    • @OakandSpore

    Hi Tom! Great video, it was something I had been pondering about as well. One question, is your pre-con room heatpump also on automatic for the temperature? I was wondering about how to control temperature differences between day and night as one would need to chance from cooling to heating in one day. Or do you just let it drop to lows during the nighttime? Thanks again for the info.

    Great setup but honestly i would prefer not having the humidifier in the same room as the AC/heat exchanger, ideally i would like the AC to never be in contact with humid air, not saying put it in the fruiting room but in a smaller humidification chamber or big duct(plenum). It's not that big a deal though but i don't think it's good for the AC to run in such a humid environment, also same goes for the filter, there is no need for it to filter humid air, it promotes a bit of contamination growth on it, besides if it was before the AC it would help keep it's fins cleaner.

    • @OakandSpore
      @OakandSpore  Год назад

      I think the AC should be fine, I only set the humidity for 70%. There are countries around the world that generally have very high humidities, and these places all use heat pumps.
