@creaturesmacabre I really like the "crudely drawn" art, it's a great way of personalising the story. 🥰 As a kid, I owned the unlicensed NES version of After Burner - a black plastic cartridge with the sticker upside down (compared with the usual way). My grandma had a holiday in the United States and brought the game back for me as a present. Lucky me! And ZZ Top's Afterburner is still on my playlist. Sleeping Bag, yes. But don't overlook Velcro Fly! 🎸
Wow afterburner as a present, that’s cool! my grandma once went to Blackmarket Records in Soho and bought my brother back a dnb tape deck for Christmas 🎄I think she must have met Nicky as she apparently specified the DJs that had to be on the tapes before buying it.
If you think After Burner is brain candy, you'll definitely want to check out Space Harrier. The arcade is the best -- of course. However, the SEGA 32X and TG-16 got nice versions of it. If you ever are lucky enough to have a chance to try the full-size sit-down arcade unit, definitely do.
I only ever got to play Afterburner in the arcades, that and Wonderboy were two of my favourites, it was rock hard though so I don't recall ever getting past the first few levels but it was damn good fun and the soundtrack was indeed excellent. Cheers for another nostalgia trip.
OutRun I would say is the first mega blockbuster game, it had such a huge following companies were falling over themselves to license it for porting to the home market with record breaking offers received by Sega at the time :). Great video, hope to see more games soon, keep up the good work.
Tired: Lady Gaga Wired: Lady Segagaga Very few people know about AM#2’s old name Studio 128, I am impressed by your knowledge and effort of research for these little videos, on top of the background music. To answer your question, it was very common for Japanese game designers to reference popular rock bands in their game titles in the Eighties, until business got big enough that legal departments wisened up.
I always thought they were inspired solely by Top Gun (and wiki seems to confirm), since I really do not see the Laputa connection (but wiki confirms that too): interesting 🤔 Top Gun was a nice air force commercial, nothing more, nothing less; I am just not too sure how that would count as a Xmas movie, yeah... Going back to the topic, the gameplay was fairly boring by today standard, but the original arcade cabinet really rocked!
Haha. Top Gun represents a lot of what I can't stand about the 80's, patriarchy, music etc. It's not for this boy. Very interesting learning about where Afterburner came from.
