I’ve been reef keeping since the late 90s too. The key is to keep cool reef fish that DON”T require crazy foods, extra work and machinery like UV systems to keep healthy. So I’m all about hardy worker tangs, wrasses, bristle worm eating dottibacks, gobies, etc. I focus more on the reef tank ecosystem as a whole than the constituents. I use just the basics so 5X extra amounts of bio filtration, super high flow w/algae scrubbers combined with 20% water changes every 3 weeks. No skimmer, UV, reactors, roller, etc…Basically as little technology as possible for life support. If you do it right the reef tank will flourish and manage itself over time and will be super healthy with far less expense and work.
Can't agree more, UV and Ca Reactor are 2 must haves :) Just a suggestion, lift your Ca feed pump up above the sump water level so if the tube fails you don't have it syphoning on the floor :)
Hey thanks for watching! I hade never thought about that while setting this up. Man what a great idea thanks so much for the comment. I’m putting that up temp until I get a shelf for it. Thanks for sharing that info ❤
I currently have an 80 watt on my 200 gallon and I had a 25 watt on my 75 gallon first tank and I put it on after a bacteria bloom as well but now I use a big one for fish health. Only being in the hobby two years I personally would not reef without one.
I've been running the Pentair 40 watt UV on my 750. I noticed a big difference in water clarity. How fast of a flow rate do you run? I run mine pretty slow.
I change my UV flow for different requirements. If I feel I have some fish parasite I can slow it down and if I think it’s bloom or something I turn it up to about 500 gal per hour
I run a Pentair UV HO 80 watt on my tank. I think they are very beneficial. I spotted the newer style Electronic carbon doser. How do you like it? I have the older version. Been awesome.
Hey thanks for watching, yes I do have the newer carbon doser and I really do like it. Pentair makes great equipment yours sounds awesome! That one wasn’t available in my area when I was shopping.
I want to pull the trigger on the purchase of a UV sterilizer for my tank but the issue I have come across from looking around online for various info on uv sterilizers was that some people were having a problem where the UV was starting to break down the plastic housing over time and the results were teeny little bits of micro plastics in the peoples tanks. I believe it was the pentair brand but I can not say for sure. Let me know if you or anyone else has come across this issue using a uv sterilizer. I know aqua uv makes a stainless model but its for swimming pools. I would like to eliminate that possible issue from ever happening. Going with a plastic one worries me I know all the ones on the market are pvc. I will be looking around for a non pvc one or building one myself. I appreciate anyones comments and thoughts on this post. Thanks
I’ve also been running a 25 watt and a 40 watt Pentair for 20 years on my 300 gallon tank and never had such issue. I will never run a tank without one.

Dont they get rid of algae? That would suck.
How many gallons?
Hello, this is a 200 gal system
Is it possible that your tank's balance of bacteria has become dependent on the use of uv?
Well it’s true we do not know much about bacteria in our tanks currently. I think that could be a possibility for sure.

Ive been running a 15w and a 55w unit for my tanks for around 2 years, never had a problem like that
