The siphon plus filter sock in the sump is hilariously simple and genius! I used to siphon into buckets and then try to scoop out the bigger chunks before dumping the water back in 😂
Love the video. The three times I got Dino I removed it by upping my nitrates and phosphates. I think that is the root cause of Dino in the first place. What are your thoughts?

Good informative video. Another great tool for fighting dino when used in conjunction with all the tools mentioned in this video is a good clean up crew. If you run a tank with high oxygen levels, have good skimmer, have a good UV sterilizer, a nice army of the appropriate invertebrates and fish can help keep it from getting a foothold to begin with.

I'm definitely going to use your tips. All the other online suggestions for countering dino is confusing and ambiguous.
Waste Away TIP! Just thought I would mention because it's not always mentioned. If you are you are treating a bad outbreak, that's what the liquid bottle is for because it is a more potent higher dosed product for this purpose. The gels are time released for easy continued treatment after the initial liquid dosing steps...OR if you just spotted what you think are the first signs of dino or for good ol preventative dosing so you dont get them in the first place.

Funny - I got dinos and didn't know what it was and next it was pretty crazy. Seems to be almost under control now - this was super helpful though and I'm definitely gonna check out the Reef Bum video on it ;)

Will Vibrant work in place of the Waste Away?
Is there an alternative for waste away? I have MB7 already or does it have to be a gunky cleaner type of bacteria. Does having dinos make your skimmer go buts? Mine hasnt stopped over skimming since a day or two after I idid waterchange and it got bad. First I just had a small amount of GHA, then I thought I developed diatoms. Its all over glass wavemakers and sand, mostly. Its also happened after phosphates went to zero from nopox and 2 nitrates. Would it hurt to try vibrant first and I also bought brightwell phosphates to dose.
Is vibrant a good product to use in place of waste away? Plus do you not do your regular water changes during the time you’re fighting the dino?

@@MadHattersReef thanks man, i did lose about 1k in corals due to it but was my own fault. One thing that has worked amazing is siphoning them through a 1 micron filter sock back in the tank aswell as a UV ( cant use the typical 200 micron filter sock since the little buggers are usually 5 micron big). Adding bacteria and phytoplankton at night also seemed to help. Adding as much competition to the dino as possible really helps.
@@MadHattersReef also the most important thing that i think should be #1 is keeping phosphates and nitrates above 0. It is an absolute must or the dinos will keep coming back.
Hi mad reef I just wanted to ask I been in to the hobbyist for about September last year when I started out I was told never to use air stone what so every but stayed in this video to use one to help with dino etc etc.
I used to have cyano then i used chemiclean and disappeared. After 1 month i got dino then i used dr tims but didn’t work for me. I used h2o2 come back again. I used dino x for 1 month then it’s gone. Now cyano come back. I fixed good UV and helped to reduce cyano but not eliminate.
Mesh or felt filter stock? Or will both work?
Great video - have an outbreak now myself. Thoughts on NOPOX instead of Dr. Tims waste away? Similar products I believe...just not sure. I thought increasing phosphates and nitrates would solve the issue. Appreciate the help.

Does 3 days blackout work?
On some list videos coral beauties are said to only need a tank size of 30+ gallons and others 60-70+ anyone have any ideas if one would be good in my 35 gallon reef with a pair of ocellaris, pair of cardinals and a watchman?
I wish I could show a picture or video to you, I have brown algae and some say diatom and some say dino. It does not have bubbles in it but its not chalky like people say diatoms are. It waves in the current like hair but its not green and its real short. Im a new reefer so I dont know much about it. My tank is 10 weeks old . Will it hurt to use waste away if its not dino? I have a uv and running the chemipure elite. Test show no silicate or phosphate and nitrate is 5.0

Using a filter sock with a cyphen isn't going to remove dino as some species of dinos are smaller than common filter sock micron size
I have been battling whatever is in my tank for 8 months and it keeps changing forms! I did have asnotty film on sand that I couldnt vacuum up, now my sand bed is pretty normal and my rocks had a red film that also covered corals. It all seemed to leave after I increased dosing of mb7 and vibrant and added 2 low watt in sump uv sterilizers. It was only on glass and bubbles attached to it. Now I am noticing a fuzzy growth on rocks and glass! I am going to see if someone on reef2reef can identify with a pic from a microscope. My tanks stay warm at 81 degrees because I live in florida. I keep indoor ac at 77 so I heard that makes it worse but my light bill is already 375 a month so dont want o run ac lower. I am also going to try bubble scrubbing because nothing is ridding it completely, just seems to change forms. I was thinking it turned into cyano (never responded to chemiclean b4) until I noticed the fuzz on rocks today and it was after I shut my pump off to fix a leak on top of the back walls of tank. I put my wavemakers at the surface to oxygenate. Its crazy how I hadnt noticed the fuzz before unless its just starting because I missed a couple days of dosing mb7 and vibrant! I have a lot of micro bubbles now from moving wavemakers up so maybe its sticking to rocks and making the fuzz more noticable! I am at witts end!!

Cyano is easy, chemi clean will eliminate it in literally 24 hours
I have a 13.5 nano tank, I'm dealing with green hair algea with bubbles on it, some purple syano. I have 40 baby clownfish in this tank (90 days old) what can I use to help this problem without harming my babies? Would Dr Tim's ECO-BALANCE help?
Are you using RO/DI filtered water?

I currently have it in my frag tank. I used elegant corals Dino regiment but made the mistake of doing a WC. I’m treating it again this time I will siphon out the dinos manually into a 200 micron sock as well as programming the lights to come on and off every 2hrs for a 12hr cycle. 👍
No worries about the pronunciation. I just call them dino-farts.
Can u elaborate as to you shouldn't do a water change during battling the dino?
because dinos will thrive on the new trace elements being introduced with fresh saltwater.
i am really not sure if i have dinos or diatoms,i have an 8 week old small fluval evo setup that cycled within 3 weeks using atm colony and 2 clowns,immediately after cycling is when the brown began and its still there now...i did a twenty percent water change about two weeks ago and now the coral sand is brown again,the sand and the rocks were both brown when it first began but when i did the water change i used a toothbrush to clean the rocks,the brown has grown back on the sand after 2 weeks but not on the rocks also the brown does not go into the water column at night and the sand is just as brown when the lights come back on....i was thinking at first it may be diatoms but im now thinking its dinos as it appears more stringy than powdery and moves around in the flow as its about 2mm high off the sand,So far i have no plan other than to stop water changes for the time being allowing nitrates and phosphates to rise,my nitrate is around 10ppm and at the moment its a fish only tank,i have noticed and knew that green algae would follow a diatom bloom and it has began and im allowing it to run free atm one thing i have noticed is that the black plastic filter section that was brown has now turned green with fine powder like algae and that where this green is creeping accross the sand it is almost like its out competing the brown stuff,i guess what im saying is im using a kind of dirty tank technique to raise nitrates and phosphates which are both things dinos hate also i am considering adding some copepods and phytoplankton and maybe a bacterial product to out compete whatever it is and it seems at the moment the green algae is starting to push it out....apologies for the essay just wanted to explain what was going off in my tank and add my thoughts on it....awesome tip about using a fine filter sock for non water change syphoning and a spot on video.
Biggest difference between Dino and Diatoms is Dino looks like a brown slime with air bubbles in it. Diatoms happen most often just after cycling and can look brown and slimy but do not have air bubbles.
@@MadHattersReef Thanks for the reply and the video dude, there was a few bubbles under the brown stuff on the rocks to start off with but once cleaned off only the brown slimy/stringy stuff remains on the sand it grew back in 2 weeks after syphoning and its producing no air bubbles.
A microscope for starters. That way you can identify what kind you have. For example, large cell Amphidinium stay in the sand bed and do not go into the water column at night like Ostreopsis. They are not effectively treated by chemical means or uv. And extended blackouts don’t do much.They can live happily for weeks in complete darkness. So I say, a microscope is the first and most important tool. Then treatment methods can be discussed. You ever been on the “ Are you tired of battling Dinos thread” on reef2reef??? It is literally 439 pages long at the moment. Lots to be talked about when batting this.

Imo, all you need is two doses of reef flux within a few days. The dino will then get loose enough to spray with a turkey baster and remove with a net until it’s gone. It worked for me.

Man I’m battle bad Dinos right now in my 15g. It’s so bad it’s sucking the life of of all my nutrients and the corals are showing it. Idk what to do. Water changes make it worse ! And my tank is too small for a UV sterilizer I don’t know of Any for nanos….I’m trapped 😫
Is there any dangerous amount of oxygen levels? my current orp is 415?
ORP was once thought to be a measure of the cleanliness of the water. ORP is now understood to give us only a broad estimate of the stability of the smorgasbord of constituents in seawater. It's not necessarily tied to oxygen levels. Side note: I have seen some of the most beautiful reef tanks in the game with ORP levels north of 400. Also, ORP changes as the wind blows, so much like PH, I wouldn't chase it.

Waterbox is a great product. Haven’t seen a Red Sea.
Battling this now in my 165g. 2rounds of Dr. Tims meathod nothing, two rounds of Elegant corals method dino's still laughing, now treating with h2o2....
Are you using waste-away? Some folks have had success with Refresh as well.

Strange but some of the points made here completely contradict other studies I’ve seen. I’m not saying who’s right or wrong because I don’t know, but articles I’ve read state that Dino’s thrive in oxygen rich, nutrient poor environments, which kind of makes sense because they’re photosynthetic.
Complete opposite viewpoint to the one in this video though 🤔

I just got dinos and my Nitrates are around 15-20 and my Phosphates.. well I dont know I dont have a test kit for that and this is my first reef tank, they are VERY annoying.

Nice video! I use every tool you mentioned to fight dino and they work well when used together. For advanced reefing add a splash (1ml per 10 gallons) of 3% hydrogen peroxide every night when the lights go out.

Most likely so you don’t lower your Nitrates and Phosphates I heard it’s cause dino tends to explode when you get 0ppm on both.

I removed all my sand because the dino's seem to love growing on it the most. I am so freaking frustrated.

Man I hate Dinos too. Bear traps only catch the babies. My .556 won’t even Pierce their skin and my largest gun the ole faithful elephant gun almost breaks my shoulder but falls short on quickly repeating on dinos like the t-Rex. Plus if I do get one there so damn big most of the time it cost thousands to rent the back ho and rent the crane to help the back ho get it in the hole. We tried explosives but then the Pterodactyls come to feast and their shit is the size of 10’ circle and and as thick as Nickelodeon slime but white. Then just the other day some assholes get them as pets and I wasn’t paying attention and boom walked straight onto a brontosaurus pile the size of a African hut 🛖 on my yard where a neighbor didn’t clean up after their pet. I was embarrassed because I kept smelling Dino shit everywhere I went and hadn’t seen a mirror till later in the wad and I went to the bathroom and as I went to wash my hands after looked in the mirror and boom saw I had walked straight through a Dino turd earlier that I thought was the African hut. I mean it goes on and on plus they go in heat and and you kept up all night with a rubbing sound like corduroy pants rubbing for hours and occasionally my creepy neighbor Mr. Powers a retired British agent yelling “yeah baby” as he films…..,,., just finished watching and you didn’t help my Dino problem at all. 😞
