- Welp, I added a uv sterilizer to my Red Sea Max 250 reef tank to try and minimize the ick in the tank as well as reduce the algae blooms I have recently been getting... this is how that went.

Hey! I like to make videos. Just trying to inspire others to get out there and live their dreams, this is the only ride we have! :)
I used to have this problem a lot when I was using dechlorinated tap water instead of RO-DI, ever since I switched I haven’t had an algae issue! Also installed a refugium which also helped me control my nutrient levels. 😊
Nice, only reason I don't think it is my water is because the 120 uses the same and doesn't have any issues.
@@DreamStateLiving
That is not Diatoms, it's Cyanobacteria. They will grow under any nutrient situation! Even double zeros nutrient levels! Best way to deal with them is veey high flow eather change and filter sock change every other day for 2 weeks. Plus bump you nutrient up to 16:1 ratio on your Nitrate/Phosphate levels.
Watch some BRS on how to get rid of diatoms and whatnot. They almost always have a guide for everything. They even have a couple videos about ick! Otherwise, your tanks look great!
Appreciate that! :)
The green mat on the bottom was green cyanobacteria. Just picked up a 24w green killing machine for my new 29g today. A bit overkill but that's fine. :)
I think for UV to work it needs to be a good one and sized correctly. I bet that one was too small and/or not powerful enough light or something. From what I've seen they can work if done right but if not done right they do nothing.
Thanks for the information!
I bought one a week ago and it’s done an amazing job my glass gets a little of brown algae but my water is no longer turning yellow ish before I bought it I did a 90% water change and by next day it was yellow ish until I saw your video I went out and bought one they do work keeps my water Cristal clear💯💯👍🤫
Hey I have a chalk goby and that guy really puts the work in on a sandbed. Not really a showie fish but a workhorse
Nice thanks! I’m gonna see what some of my fish stores have in
That tank fire 🔥
Hey thank you :)
Don't use tap water. I use to use tap water untill I got a ro system I love it saves me so much work
Love the realness off your video
Thanks Edward! :)
Those little gimmick sterilizes work great for free swimming dino. Love em. Not so much for the little algae you got going on. Looks like phosphate issue
I have dino currently, ostreopsis, tried using the IM midsize UV and it didn’t do anything, have had dino for years now. Finally going to try the Green Machine 24W. Might be over-kill in my IM 30 gal long AIO, but would have more faith in it compared to the 9W.
The GKM only helps with micro algae floating in the water causing it to be cloudy and/or green. It does not work with anything else.
What about bacteria bloom?
Yep
Some people don’t understand this,
Awesome reef 😎
Thanks Speedy! :)
if you haven't yet test for phosphate and nitrate this algae could be from elevated nutrient levels. With fish they need feeding and thus nutrients rise.
Yup. That is my guess as well.. I need to pick up a test kit.
That unit should work well for algae issues like cyano. But for ich you would need a hell expensive UV sterilizer that will set you back a fair few hundred bucks!
Yea, Im hoping to will clear up those bottom floor patches :/ cleaned it up a bit and going to let it run another week or so!
I would recommend adding a dual reactor. Adding carbon and gfo. It helps with phosphates which is probably the problem. Good luck and nice tank
A dual reactor? Never heard of that gonna look it up! Thanks!
@@DreamStateLiving if you want to see if it will help without spending the money you could try adding a product called chemi-pure to your sump area. It helps but not as much as a reactor. The carbon cleans the water of impurities and does a couple other things but the gfo is the best at removing phosphates.
Chemi-pure elite? I just added a new one of those last week -_-
@@DreamStateLiving well if that's not helping it might not be your problem. I wouldn't change much very quickly. As much as the chemi pure helps its not as effective as a gfo reactor. Sorry.
@@only_son5040 yea trying things one at a time to figure out what gets it under control. Thank you !
It’s actually not an algae it’s cyano bacteria kinda like algae but it’s not use chemi clean it oxidized the bacteria
Great video,keep it up!⚫
Thanks Cristina! You too:)
Sorry about the algae. In my freshwater tank when algae flares up I brush it all off with a toothbrush then hit the w/c's heavy. I guess that's harder to do in a reef tank. GL. Nice video :)
Haha ya baby steps! Thanks Fly!
Look into a Santa Monica algae scrubber!
No matter the algaes on the glass, the only thing I see is a very beautiful natural pijama’s woman, struggling with her passion. Good luck beauty take it easy cyanos will go as they came, fast. Cheers from Switzerland 🤜
So I bought a uv sterilizer for my tank, from what I read, it has a lot to do with flow rates vs. what it can kill. Example: 425 gallons per hour kills algae organism, 900 gallons p/h kill viruses. But I believe that only kills what’s in the water column vs stuff already present. I had cloudy water issue for a bit, with ich and both gone now, water much cleaner, and algae on glass grows at a slower rate. I would def. check to see if you have the right flow rates
Great channel and videos. I subscribe now. 😃👍
Hey thanks so much!:)
@@DreamStateLiving i like very well your tank, I think he has some similarities to mine. 😃👍
I am a newbie in saltwater tanks..hoping to learn something from your channel..😊..uv light if i am not mistaken, if freshwater, it is only to prevend the water from going green..for algae, normally put in fish which the diet is algae..😊..you are cute..😍😘
Awesome welcome to the reef tank life!
@@DreamStateLiving thank you 😊😘
maybe google and buy a saltwater algae eater of some sort. that is how i take care of it in a fresh water aquarium
Yes! Lol I have to find something. Think a sand sifter goby May help with the sandbed
You should try getting a RODI unit from BRS
hey love the videos
The green stuff is a form of cyano. Chemiclean should help. Diatoms on the glass is just part of reefing, they come and go. Invest in an algae magnet and clean glass at least once per week.
I do have chemipure and perigean in the back.. maybe its time for a new one 🤷🏻♀️
@@DreamStateLiving have you heard of chemiclean? It's a liquid that kills cyano. Its different to chemipure.
Vecton v2 600 UV sterilizer👍🏼
Lol I don’t have this problem (yet..) however great video!
Chemi clean!!!
Have you ever tried dosing vibrant? Heard it works wonders.. maybe lowering light %, and adjust so that you have more blues and less red/yellows.. just some ideas..
Yea happy to report have had no more ick so think it helped with that! Algae and cyno is just my levels off need to get them in check ! Will look into the vibrant, thanks
Careful with that stuff. I’ve heard it’s snake oil. Do some googles on it
WOW, lovely looking reef, such a great rockscape! Do you remember where you purchased those red shorts you wear at the start? Very cute look, would love to get a pair... Thanks, love your channel :-)
What light donu have?how many kelvins and lumens?its blue?
Try adding some chemiclean. I know you said you think you have it in a back in a back but that is actually chemipure. Very different. Chemi pure removes phosphates and is like carbon. Chemiclean removes cyanobacteria from the tank. Although cyano usually is red, the green cyano is almost always on the sandbed like yours. make sure you add more flow as well.; cyano only shows up when there is an imbalance in nutrients and or not enough flow. Check your phosphate and nitrate levels to make sure that they are not off.
Thanks so much for your help Curry! Yes, I did think other were referring to Chempure lol BUT I have found chemiclean now and am going to give it a try! Getting a kit to check those levels as well! Thanks again.
Cyano can come in green an red an brownish orangish it’s 100% cyano no worries won’t hurt fish or coral jus ugly to look at
How long do you run your lights on a daily basis? I hope it’s getting better now
it has been about the same. they ramp up starting around 10-30am an turn off completely around 10;30 pm.. but they are only at peak around 3-4 hours
This Device is only for Bacteria, Germs and Floating algae. Not for other kinds of algae.
Hi,I install my 9 watts yesterday its run for only 10mins and the transformer was exploded..do you think can i use it again if i buy a replacement transformer.. thank you
That’s a bummer. I’m not sure, I would contact the manufacturer and ask them.
@@DreamStateLiving thank you so much!
So did it actually help combat ich?
don't know if it was the UV sterilizer or not, but fish have been all good since! :)
It’s great but that pump don’t last long I have gone through 2 now my light shows now and than
You need to add skimmer
I hope my corraline algae covers the glass in my tank like yours wish you could send me some 😃
It just takes time. I know you want it now but the time it takes to grow makes it so much more glorious when you achieve it. You'll get there as long as you stay consistent.
How long before you had coraline? Did u have to add it? I have 2 tanks and none yet. I restarted one4 months ago and the other is about 8 months. I bough some live rock from someone whos tank was only a months older than mine and she had quite a bit of it! I have bought frags with it on them but never spreads. Dont know if I have to shave it off or what and love your channel! You go woman reefer!
Haha thanks! So my tank had some coraline already on it when I got it from the previous owner, he had it for about 4 years. But even now it does grow pretty quickly in my tank. Not sure how to get it to start exactly, only son may be able to help out better on that front. But I do think time is the main thing!:)
@@karennation3580 If you don't have any corraline algae ask a friend, reef store or someone in a group locally to scape some of into a cup of your water and mix it in with your water change. That will seed your tank. Then all you can do is keep your parameters consistent, as in your alkalinity and calcium. Adding kalk with your water changes might speed up the process. It could take as long as a year for you to see good progress so don't worry if it doesn't happen immediately. Hope this helps.
Probably high nutrients? Why not test and know for sure?
Wait... I’m here for the idea of getting rid of the ick. How did you do it in a reef tank?!
Qt all fish with copper, fishless in display tank for 76 days minimum to starve out parasite
UV sterilizer will get rid of ich. Copper is a dangerous solution for inverts, etc. If you wait ich out with a UV Sterilizer, it will go away.
It looks to me like that is green/blue cyano. It’s a bacteria and not an algae so usual algae removal methods won’t work. I had this a few weeks ago and bough Ultralife Red Slime Stain remover... cleared everything within 2 days and mine was 10 times worse than yours. Check it out. If the green stuff is more like a mat of slime/algae looking stuff, that’ll be Cyano. PS I also had bubbles mixed in with mine. It’s the oxygen bubbles from the bacteria, not ‘bubble algae’
will check it out thanks!
Did you ever beat this? I’ve got the same crap.
Ick free! Well from the eye lol. All fish have been good. Not from the uv though
little more less light,
That UV sterilizer is a complete pile of flaming crap. If you are planning to get a sterilizer you have to go with the largest one that fits your budget.
You need rodi water. Also what’s your parameters
feeding to much feed once a day and put your protein skimmer on all the time
do not try to solve in one day what took a year
Cyanobacteria
my tank has what hers has I believe and I did a coffee filter test whenyou strain it through to see if it clumps back together and it didint so I am now assuming its diatoms but wont go away. I did have an imbalance at one point with high nitrates and low phosphates. Can that cause cyano? Also does chemiclean affect corals or fish. I have had lightening problems, and cant get my par meter to work so I can permanently attach my corals o they have been knocked off rock and moved around so I am sure they are stressed. Do you think it will be safe to try?
Skimmer? too much protein.
Better salt.
I believe we use Fritz Blue Box.. but that is the same salt and water in the 120 and its fine.. Its also what I was using for the last 6ish month before the fishies.
U got a Snapchat ????🤭
How do you have 3k subscribers? I guess they hand them out like candy on here.....ugh you have no idea what is going on! People don’t listen to her!
I had to beg for my 3k subscribers. :/ thanks for watching ;)
The UV is to small for that tank. It Worked for me with a 24w 120 gallon pump and i have a 55 gallon tank. algae has stopped growing, hermit crabs are cleaning all the old stuff. NO new grown and clean class.
