    I have MTHFR and was vegan for 7 years (was talking cyanocobalamin). My B12 (and folate) levels were off the chart high, and I suspected that I wasn't absorbing it properly. My doctor thought I was nuts, "it's high, you're fine"

      I had the same experience in my vitambin 12 test, too high... i'm taking vitamin b complex. My doctor seems not concern about it as well...

      MTHFR persons are unable to efficiently change cyano B12 into active form-methyl B12. It will be much better to get active form ie. methylated B 9 and B 12. Or. Even better buy all active form of B complex.

    I believe his name is Kelly Heim, PhD. He has doctorate in Pharmacology. He consults with several supplement makers and has published a number of professional articles that were peer-reviewed. While I don't do extensive literature reviews a quick attempt to check out some of his claims indicates that he knows what he's talking about. While there may eventually be an anti-aging pill or treatment, more than likely it's going to be a bunch of little advances all adding up to help in the meantime. This is probably one of those little improvements that we all need to make. I ordered a B12 license that has both types of vitamin B12 that he has discussed. They are quite inexpensive. Thank you Dr Heim and the people that posted this.

    Excellent take on B12, absorption and bioavailability. There is one vegetarian source of B12 called spirulina. Not the dried powder that only contains a B12 analog but the freshly harvested paste which is a live bacterial culture. Given that there are only a handful of sources around, I consider it impractical.

      @@Ardentic-better-eat-meat not at all. All spirulina starts out as a paste form then dessicated. That reduces nearly all B12 into the unusable analog. There is nothing fermented about the fresh paste. As a side note, fresh spirulina is also a good source of methionine. Dried vs fresh are two very different products. It's a shame the name is the same.

      @@babaluto you said something about bacteria. They can on occasion produce better compounds. I'm still not sure how toxic b12 analogs from duckweed or spirulina can be a source of methyl or hydroxy b12. I'll look into this.

      @@Ardentic-better-eat-meat right. Often times people mistakenly identify spirulina as an algae when it is actually a bacterium. Nearly all the available online info about spirulina do not delineate between fresh vs dried. The analogs become a majority through decomposition. One mistake that is made is when we think that Omega/fish oils are produced by fish. They do not, they accumulate it from their diet. Think food chain. To be clear, I am not a vegetarian or a chemist. I started growing spirulina years ago, then learned bits as I could. It has been fascinating.
