    I have too say I do believe this is the best walnut log that you have milled on your show. It is amazingly beautiful and such low sap wood. I like some other tree species but there is nothing like a beautiful American black walnut!

    I always enjoy watching your videos. You cut some beautiful wood. I’m also glad you only most of the time cut walnut, oak, and other hardwoods. It is nice to watch someone who enjoys his job. “If you love what you do you never work a day in your lifetime. My body is old and worn out now but if I was young again this is how I would make my money and never work a day. Thanks again for the many hours of enjoyment.

    Because of the pandemic, Nakashima Studios is not offering Saturday afternoon tours right now. When they do reopen, it is on my bucket list for a visit. You would enjoy it Nathan. Mira, George's daughter, runs it, continuing with her own graceful spirit. It's not far-fetched to think that you might be a supplier to the business, but they do have quite an inventory already on hand!

    Back in my late 20s I helped a good friend clear his new fields which had been planted with really old black wall nuts as a wind break. And this was a 160 acre property with the trees being planted 3 deep all around the perimeter. The first year was spent cutting the trees down. The following year Steve had a saw mill ready to go. Over the next 2 months was spent cutting black walnut and it seemed like we barely put a dent in those piles of stored logs. We ran into many trees that had soul like this log. It was some of the finest that I've ever seen. But here 29" wide that's impressive! Great score on this one.

    A lot of woodworkers today are producing "live edge" furniture with "bow tie" or "dovetail" inlays/reinforcements have no knowledge of George Nakashima and his work (or philosophy) from the 1960-1970s. His studio is in New Hope PA and is still producing works though as you note he has passed on. (I bet you can tell I am a fan!! LOL)

    • @briandavis8658

      Greg Taylor did Nakashima do bow ties?

    • @gregtaylor9331
      @gregtaylor9331 4 года назад

      @@briandavis8658 He has several pictures of and notes about them in his book "The Soul of a Tree", though he often refers to them as "butterfly keys" or "butterflies". I have also seen them called "dovetail keys", I believe in an article from the early days of Fine Woodworking (1970's) discussing his work. So yes, but not with the "bow tie" terminology.

    i WAS WAS BORN IN 49 AND FROM 57-67 lived in a Chicago Bungalow style house (lots of beautiful woodwork) in the suburbs of Milwaukee Wi, in our oversized yard were 17 trees all over 2 feet in diameter. There were 2 giant black walnut trees in that yard and now 50 years later I know from driving by they are gone...... seeing this video I ache at the thought they were cut down and thrown out or fire wooded......

I guess they are worth a little bit of money.most are nice and straight and tall and produced a ton of walnuts this year but not last year.
