- In this video I harvest a Box Elder on the Wood-Mizer sawmill. The log produced some decent slabs with plenty of flame figure on both faces.

Just went to the website to see what you have for availability and just as I suspected...nothing. I truly am in love with that Box Elder bleed. I make boatloads of stuff...lighting, furniture...whatever my fancy...and I sure could have used some slabs for new countertops. I have (2) 2x12's side by side that I sanded the daylights out of, burned with a big ass marshmallow tip torch, sanded again, antique walnut stained and spar boat varnished about 6 coats that turned out like glass...
It looks absolutely amazing but I really really love those slabs and could really use a new weekend project...a few weekends maybe...and some new open shelves for my 1940s replica kitchen. Keep us updated for more stock availability! Thanks and you have a great channel!
steve shoemaker why you like yo own comic
This show is addictive, your music choices are on point.
On today's episode of "what did RUclips recommend today?"
Was watching and my 12yr old kid said “Dad, I thought you didn’t like king of the hill” she thought it was hank
I like how you pulled the tractor out of the garage and your truck was on the front lawn.
Wow that red in the log looks cool!
That Box Eldeer was GORGEOUS! Thanks for sharing.
Yes it was!
Sounds like king of tha hill and we are on episode one of what’s on my recommended
Love hank
Dayum, my brother! Arkansas sister here, DESPERATELY, wanting to do what you do. Not only is your wood amazing, but the other reason I watch you, is your MUSIC is TOTALLY LIFE AFFIRMING. Though wood is my main passion, music is it's twin. You can't beat a combination like that. Keep on keepin' on, darlin'.
The red in that wood makes it really unique and very nice. My favorite color is red.
Wow, God used his paintbrush 🖌 on the inside of this tree! Beautiful!
I have never seen wood red like that. It is absolutely the most amazing thing I have ever seen. Beautiful! Blessings to you.
Oh my! Those slabs are fantastic! I'd love to make a table from one of your slabs. Hopefully, one of these days I'll make it to Tennessee. Nothing in the world like hand sanding a piece of beautiful wood and feeling it under your hands. I'm loving the red running through that box elder!
This is the most fun I've had watching Box Elder being cut up.
One mans junk wood is another's bleeding beauty
well said
Too bad about the crotch rot.
Ha ha ha ha ha 😃 😉

Tracker in garage, Chevy in the yard. A man that knows his priorities 😂
Thanks for producing your videos this is all new to me and I think I'm learning a lot
Recently found the channel and it auto-played this. Tractor in the garage, truck in the front lawn.
Don't know why this is so interesting. I'm a carpenter and enjoy me some nice looking lumber,
but didn't know milling it was so cool.
Welcome aboard!
I appreciate the effort it must take for to create and edit these videos...especially the intros and outros. The music selections and cinematography are on point.
Thank you for your efforts. Frankly I’d rather watch these than anything the networks have to offer.
A productive man working his land and using hus hands to work the tools. The blade turns on the tree, now we have materials to make a house, chair, table, fences, barns, cabinets, doors, floors, trim, musical instruments, bowls, spoons, brooms, roof rafters, walls, siding, window frames, handles for tools, and many many more. Awesome videos, it has to be very satisfying to work in such a beautiful land. Thanks for your efforts. Love the music. Thanks for the names of tunes so we can find and listen again. The man has a kiln too, incredible set up. True USA spirit.🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
Oh Wow! That is really beautiful
Very unique wood! Loved the red lines!
Another awesome video! Thanks.
Very nice video. Thank you. Blessings and peace from UK
Beautiful what incredible colour!
What an amazing bit of wood this is
Starting watching and immediately thought...I'd be willing to bet that is in Tennessee. Then I heard you say Tennessee. I then looked you up online and you are in my hometown! Small world from RUclips's recommended!
BROTHER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I AM IN LOVE WITH THAT RED COLORING INSIDE THIS WOOD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! NATURE IS AMAZING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
That is absolutely gorgeous
WOW 😮 that’s so nice.
It really is!
Very interesting wood. I hope the big log is next nice work as usual.
The colour is mesmerizing I'm always pleased surprised what I see next love your day's in the sawmill.
Another fine log, it seems ya get all the good ones!
That is beautiful wood!
Nathan, when you pour that water on and that lovely piano music, well I am always amazed and humble by the beauty! Thanks Kindly! Love and Peace to You and your Family! And Thank You for your service in the police force as well. I would have left most anything for the love of that present inside those logs! Thanks again! DaveyJO on Pa.
That is EASILY the biggest box elder I have ever seen!
...and box elder is TERRIBLY prone to cracking on drying.
My tree stand is full of Boxelder, I had to cut one down in the spring when the sap was running. It was like I killed an animal the sap was dark blood red and just ran out of the tree.
I turn some and the red really looks good.
stunning acreage with woods full of amazing trees and no doubt wildlife, shorter boards still have uses other than building walls or floors
Oh, wow! you weren't kidding about the red! I can see why it's referred to as "flame." That is super cool looking!
Great log! I recently picked up one that had a 5’ diameter base trunk! It turned into some beautiful lumber
Gosh that is lovely wood Nathan. I love the red colouring, it's a wood I have never seen before. I have meant to mentioned long ago that I love the aerial views on many of your video entries. They make a great entry. Cheers, Don from South Australia.
Cool, thanks
Cool hat! That IS some great looking wood, Nathan! It would make some fine coffee tables or small island tops. 👍🏻
Another solid video Nathan. Well done. I enjoyed watching it
Cool machine maan really cool
Awesome wood, makes me jealous!
In my experience with box elder, it rots quickly after being cut if not protected.
Love your show though
Agreed
Another great video, you get better and better! Best Regards Fred Thomas in SKOKIE IL.
Another GREAT video!!!!
"Any day around the sawmill is a good day." Amen, brother!
I caught note of that too and glad he corrected himself. Being a Sawyer is a Blessing! We need more guys like Nathan on RUclips. Keep the videos coming. We will keep producing urban sawmill videos from our blazing hot state of Texas. Just wait till winter comes though......LOL!
I love your job!
Love the opening drone shots of your countryside. Nice country. You’re right about that humidity. I’ll stay in South Dakota. We may have sub zero winters but our summers are pretty dry.
Beautiful slabs ! I can see some nice kitchen cabinet door panels there !
Love ❤️ it!
Very pretty wood.
That's some beautiful wood, love your work keep up the great work. Thank you.
Thank you too!
I'm happy to see that the tree is so beautiful inside. When I bought my house, every season, box elder beetles would cover the side that faced the sun. They'd crawl under the boards and live in big clumps. The bugs look a lot like the inside of that tree because they are brown and red. I never tried to get rid of them but they are no longer using my house as their mating space. I have it treated twice a year for carpenter ants and termites (the house is almost 200 yo), but they use pet-safe spray, probably borax. Not sure if that's why the beetles don't hang here anymore. Love your videos.
Love the color.
14:46 i honestly did not expect the grain to come alive like it did on this slab...wowzers!!!
Gorgeous
You have a very good taste in music for your videos, adding to your overall salesmanship! Very Nice!
I love the way you shut down the negative nellies! You have the perfect personality to deal with that! Keep up the good work, me and my grandson watch all the videos and always 👍🏻. p.s. Nice hat!
I have never knew this coloring to be unique. I guess by family having a sawmill and loggers, you don't think about it. However, you never take the beauty for granted. Some wood , some cuts, they turn out extraordinary beautiful. I'm happy to be able to watch you, and not have to get hot or sweaty. It's relaxing. It reminds me of home.
that was beautiful Nathan...the middle section of that slab would make one hell of a wild solid body guitar. keep em coming buddy. hey to the family n momma cat from me n crazy cat tommy.
I was thinking it would make a nice bass. But only if when dried the stink is completely gone. My playing stinks enough already.
@@davidgagnon2849 once it was sealed with a few coats of polyurethane you wouldn't smell anything but man would it be one very fine n unique guitar
Almost makes me think a very unique flying V shaped guitar. A good epoxy coat, a maple neck, and ebony fretboard would probably make some great tones.
@@jonathandoe5983 your readin my mind
That is so beautiful. Looks like a totally different character from black walnut. No golden undertone. I love the red colour
Great stuff, and I really, really like your choice of music.
In SE Wyoming the most common hardwood after the cottonwoods is boxelder. Though sometimes burls are more than 3' across, they are almost always rotten hearted. Few boxelders more than 12" in diameter are sound, both rotten and bug bit. Pack rats use the hollow trunks both for nests and as hay barns. If you watch a snake investigating the creek bed for its next meal, they'll always check out the voids and deadfalls. Early white settlers sometimes made maple syrup from the sap but they say it had a bitter after taste related to the wood's disagreeable smell.
Interestingly beautiful wood
It really is!
Wow !
I had not seen your ZoSo tattoo. Respect. I can see how you keep it “Tight, but Loose”. 😎
Or he could just be a fan of Jimmy Page and Led Zepplin and his favorite album is the one with this symbol on the cover
Nathan, watching a Saw Mill is really kind of boring but it is Your enthusiasm and description of the process to find the Beauty of the Wood that makes the anticipation of the Cut so much fun and entertaining.
Great camera work, drone sequence, music, editing, and commentary keeps me addicted.
I'm glad you can't see the grin on my face as I watch, I sure do enjoy your channel!
thanks, appreciate that,
I had a few small planks with red streaks that i turned into plates.
good use!
Beautiful red color...
Nathan, HELLO, I had never seen RED in planks such as this before , simply amazing, God Bless, take care, ,,,,, Cheersfrom NJ
Wow!!! Pretty grain and colors!! I might be interested in a slab of that after kiln drying. I’m going over to the web site and have a look at your walnut slabs. Great idea selling on the web site. You might be surprised at how many people want a slab or two for wood projects!
Love the video Nathan. I really enjoy when you get into the technical details and make it all appear easy. We know it isn’t easy, but your explanations are outstanding!! Thanks!!
Very interesting video.
Thanks 👍👍
Too beautiful to cut a table yes artificail red color on the black mark. Also mixing blue and red in the black mark. resin. Enjoy your vid.
I would love to get some turning blanks of that for bowls, platters and shaving brush/bowl sets.
I love that intro music!
That does have some crazy character, haven't found any large enough to mill yet up here.
Not sure if I have ever said but i love your intros!! Leaves are changing up here!! Had a frost last night...
ready for them to change here, looking forward to fall, good to hear from you buddy,
Box Elder- beautiful wood.....so many think of it as garbage wood but they are mistaken.
I like your choice of music for this video.
Nice color. I wish I had a slab so I could make an end table
Good looking slabs Nathan, pity about the punky end and the smell! Looking forward to seeing the other half of that log! All the best Graham 🇬🇧🇬🇧
I slabbed up some smaller box elder sections and once its dried there is no smell, only when the wood is wet
Had to pause the video to mention that some of your opening shots along with the music are pretty relaxing. I don't often read through the comments to see if anyone else has a similar opinion because quite frankly, I don't take stock in the opinions of strangers. Kind of ironic isn't it?
totally. I'm a musician and I love his bumper music (music at the beginning and end). It's very peaceful seeing the wood cut and then listening to the music.
I will have to stay you have me spoiled on your walnut slabs! I a big fan of the box elder but was pleased with the beech from the other week I may change my mind on the bigger box elder when it hits the mill!
Tractors in the garage, trucks in the yard 🤔😂
Really hope that great color stays for you! I''ve been eyeing a big burly boxelder about 50 ft from my mom's house and this almost pushes me over the edge to grab the Stihl.
That would be 2 nice end tables and a nice Coffey table
Ye ha!! Unreal.
This very interesting grain and color. This first time I've seen box elder. This would be awesome for the people who use imperfect wood buried in epoxy. Then ya wouldnt notice punky wood or smell so much.
Thanks for watching
That'd make some nice looking guitar bodies
yes very good use for those,
hard enough?
@@OutoftheWoods0623 Yeah, definitely. I'll hit the shop, I have a P Bass commission that might work for.
depending on price and availability i do have an interest in some of this wood. it will make beautiful jewelry box's or hope chests.
W-O-W, Imagine what stories that tree could tell...------------Excuse my ignorance, but would someone enlighten me as to how slabs get from point A to point B? I've never mailed anything but standard boxes through the mail. Used to be, you could send large packages through on the bus. And I've seen surfboards and golf club bags come down the ramp at the airports, so I'm just trying to imagine how Nathan's slabs travel!!!
Wow
Nice lumber.
I do think that wood would make a great cofeefee table.
I took down several smaller (10" - 12") box elder trees last year because they were a nuisance. The bark split while they were standing and attracted black and orange bugs called, appropriately, box elder beetles. I don't miss them at all.
Damn it man
I would love into see the other side!of the first cuts that you dispose of. Make good art pieces.
I just wanted to say that I enjoy the channel. Maybe it's the stories or maybe it's the anticipation of what lies within the tree, sort of natures art waiting to be found.
I enjoyed the episode where you delivered the Butternut to the chair maker. I would like to see an episode that followed the story of the lumber (slabs of quarter sawn) where another artisan uses the lumber in furniture to see how the whole story ends.
Steve Noren
That red will turn brown as the wood dries, but it gets exposed again with planing and sanding. Study up on how to seal it so the red stays when you finish it.
I have some dried to 9% and still has red. I also tested using an outdoor finish with a UV blocker and it seemed to keep its red color well so far
@@bobafettbv Mine had some sun exposure and it browned quickly on the surface. While it's native along the creeks in NW KS, it's usually rotten in the middle.
@@stevennoren6398 I have a non air conditioned sun room that I dehumidify to dry wood without being in direct sunlight. That probably helped me. To see how it would hold up I sanded an off cut with some red streaking to 220 grit and finished it with general finishes outdoor oil. I left it in direct sun from a window all summer, no fading of the red. Now that the lumber is dry I'll be planing and jointing them to get them square and then deciding on a project. I'll see if I get any fading during that process.
