*From my Live Stream on 10/24 - this is massively cut down, if you want to see the original it's on my channel and it takes me a very long time to do this tuning work - this is the edited version here!
But on this week's stream, I tried to see if I could show some of the pluses and minuses of using "Auto-Tune" or vocal tuning plugins (I actually use Melodyne!) on a not-so-great vocal performance. This week I used Wes Scantlin of Puddle of Mudd's vocals from the viral performance of "About A Girl" (originally a Nirvana song). I did a reaction to this last year but thanks to RUclipsrs making isolated vocal and instrumental tracks I was able to take the vocals and see if I could tune them into a salvageable recording. Remember all vocalists have bad days! We're here to learn not to troll.

34:25 Where the comparison between the original and tuned version begins.
You have the patience of a saint for attempting this lol. Sucks that the guy was finally getting his life turned around and then had to deal with this fiasco, hope he's kept his head up and learned a little about prep, my guess is the band didn't even rehearse figuring it was a well-known cover. Should have tuned the guitars down.
This is the moral of the story haha, when it doubt tune it down, don’t strain 🤘
Wes scanlon: I need to hire this girl, full time.
I think the biggest issue with his performance is he clearly wanted to emulate Kurt almost to much. He didn't want to live within the limitations of his own voice or even change the piece to match him more. That was why this was so hard to not be super critical. When you want to cover someone as lauded or iconic as an artist that popularized a genre you better be on your A game. If you are going to try to accurately invoke it, you need to be as close to that line as possible.
Like it is super clear he has a reverence for the music or artist but he clearly didn't practice this or over estimated his own ability to pull it off. Either way this is a cool exercise.
He has sung this before well though
Spoiler: No, she couldn't fix it.
Honestly they should have tuned their guitars down 1-2 steps for that cover (which would have put it in C tuning if I remember what the original song's tuning was right?)
Wes was clearly trying to sing above his natural register and that's where a lot of the problems were. Tuning down a step or two so Wes could sing in his natural register not only would have solved that problem but made the cover unique and different from every other About A Girl cover.
That was intense
Damn, that seems to be a harder task than sitting in a room with MGK and resist the urge to punch him in the face :D
Can’t believe more people didn’t try to do this 💀
Great example of regardless how good the tech (and engineer) is, one just cannot fix dreadful source material.
Autotune - "I can make cats sing but I can't fix this, sorry."
Edit
Classic example of "We'll fix it in post."
Because himself isn't using an open throat technique. It's sharpening the vocal timbre.
NOT ALL HEROES Wear CAPES!
Love your channel, big thanks for all your information - yet just say NO to autotune.

Even with tuning it sounds funny af
Especially compared to your beautiful voice
Oh man. Every time you’re working on a particular note and the program makes it sound even more weird, I crack up. I’m sorry. 😅
33:04 is a perfect example lol
Valiant effort, but seems like this take was just completely unsalvageable.
'I've got a lot of experience.... I'm pretty good at vocal tuning..." smFh.
Why smfh? I do have a lot of experience at tuning vocals, why the sarcasm? I think it must be because I am a woman but I have been using melodyne since the early 2000s and I minored in audio recording in college. I tune and edit vocals for myself and others. I am not sure what this comment is about or why it would seem implausible since I’m sitting here clearly showing that I know how to do it.
@@voicehacks Some people are just sarcastic and nitpicky for no reason. Keep doing what you are doing, Mary!
What’s your problem?
