Is It Wrong To Laugh At This?!

  • Today I'm reacting to a video that has received a lot of ridicule. It's the Puddle of Mudd cover of Nirvana's "About A Girl". However, I'd like to react to it from a more sympathetic point of view and tell you why maybe it's not that funny at all. What do you think? Is it wrong to laugh at this or is it just funny?

I had a *very* out of tune moment a few years back at a gig.
I was covering If I Lose it by Charlie Simpson and on the line "We're holding on by the tips of our fingers--" my voice sort of locked up and out came this horrendous squeak. I can't even describe it. It sounded like someone threw a golf ball directly down my throat. Everyone started laughing and I was initially embarrassed but then I started laughing and a bloke offered to buy me a beer to clear my throat. I took it. Someone then jokingly said "he needs two" I took that one as well. Had a little laugh and 5 minute break, a few swigs of the beer and everything was fine.
Nothing happened to me after being laughed at. It didn't make the people rude, ignorant, uncaring or unempathetic.
What happened was funny. And laughter is a reflex. This cover is hilarious and Wes should see the funny side to it.
We know he can sing. We know he's talented. This funny moment doesn't define him. It's just a brilliant light-hearted moment and it has happened to absolutely every singer on earth at some point. Whether they're singing in the shower or to a live audience.

Love this take, Justin. The empathy is rare.
As a former singer, that mental/emotional struggle that is exacerbated by your physical limitations/illness/injury isn't spoken about enough. Singing stuff you shouldn't be singing or just aren't capable of at the time is incredibly taxing. Watching someone like Jon Bon Jovi struggle through a set is like that as well. I feel for them. That throat tightening is a real thing.
Regardless of the reasons, the band and their advisors should never have put him in this post, and if no one else was going to out the brakes on it, Wes should have.

Oh man so sorry about your rotator cuff! Anything in the rotator cuff is exquisitely painful, but torn! Gah 🤦🏻‍♀️! I can’t imagine. I’m in the States and know what you mean about health insurance. Were you pitching in high school, college, minor leagues…? I’ve noticed in the MLB they just absolutely use up their pitchers until they destroy them. Tim Lincecum is a perfect example. An amazing pitcher that they just chewed up and spit out because they can. People complain about athletes getting payed too much, but I don’t think they get paid anywhere near enough, especially considering the lifetime of crazy high medical bills they have to look forward to. It is so messed up. I think that culture of using an athlete until they physically destroy them starts in high school even. Again I’m so sorry. Have you ever tried massage or body work, kinesiology, acupuncture, etc.. Won’t heal everything, but could help a lot with range of motion and chronic pain. I’m sending healing vibes and prayers your way. ❤️‍🩹 🥰🙏🏼

I have a Puddle of Mudd / The Darkness story from ~16 years ago.
I had heard a story that Wes threw a fit and refused to play a show where The Darkness was also playing. I don't know the circumstances or if it's even true, but anyway.
I worked with a girl who also worked at a radio station. She called me excitedly one day saying that she was having lunch with Puddle of Mudd. I asked her to tell Wes that my favorite band was The Darkness.
I heard her tell him, and then I heard him swearing and upset about it.

I've never been a big Puddle Of Mudd fan, but I know Wes has struggled with addiction, which led to him making a lot of really poor decisions that led him to jail multiple times. I think that abuse has led him to not take care of himself properly, and his ability as a singer suffered because of it.

Honestly, it seemed like this was recorded during the day. I'm sure you know, when you've been on tour, if you have to do press at 1pm to sing something like this and you were up til 4am the night before, you'll operating on not enough sleep, and more importantly for your voice, you've had no time to properly warm up or to get over doing a show the night before, which was only 12 hours prior, you're already behind the 8 ball. I've noticed that just having been up for a good long while before trying to sing, regardless of warming up or not, helps a ton. Lets say I wake up at noon and have to sing at 2pm. I'm screwed. No amount of warming up can save me, even if I'm not on tour and tired/my voice is already suffering. It could be a lot of things. Knowing Wes he probably was out drinking until sunrise the night before too. None of that helps.

When I first began voice lessons, I realized when your body is your instrument, it's way different than picking up wood and wires to play as expression. When I'd see public figures singing and maybe not doing so well (for a single performance or a short time over multiple performances) I'd cut them some slack - not knowing their health or what they'd been through, but it affects your voice like it doesn't affect a guitar, or drum, or keyboards. I don't know much about puddle of mudd, but I agree that this isn't really a good thing, and maybe he was having a rough day or week, and the result is being internet famous for a bad performance for ever. I can appreciate Justin's respectful analysis of why it went bad, but it's still a train wreck.

It's like he got amnesia but he's trying to keep it secret, he's established he's a singer but doesn't remember how to do it and he's just hoping it'll all come back to him. You'd think they'd practice and switch the song for something else after a few attempts. Maybe he blew his voice out nailing it in practice or it was first thing in the morning and there was no time for one last practice or even a warm up. There must be a story, I hope he's OK :)
