Wes Borlands guitar work is in my opinion underrated as fuck. It's like a mix of the Edge from u2. Adam Jones of tool. And a bit of Mark Tremonti of Alterbridge/Creed . Always loved his work.
All the instrumentalists in Limp Bizkit were actually really proficient at what they did. Fred obviously was not a great singer, but he was very charismatic so as a front man, he nailed that.
My favourite LB song: BOILER! It has well written lyrics and depth, makes you think ... not a typical radio song. I find it is one of the few exceptions in LB's discography. In other words, that's a really awesome song!
Justin I have to admit I’d never heard of ‘the darkness’ until I stumbled across your channel. I been digging it, but dude I love your takes on happenings in music. Keep it up ✌️❤️😊
Yeah. Cus they made ONE HIT. Fred Durst made multiple of which Justin should take heed to some of the lyrics... "I know why you wanna hate me..." [TAKE A LOOK AROUND] "You think your special, when you look down on me." [MY WAY] And guaranteed you've heard both those songs. Because they're catchy enough to get high in the charts unlike 99% of the Darkness.
@@AnonYmous-ez4es have you listened to their albums? The darkness has a lot of awesome songs. Sure they never made anything as popular as I believe in a thing called love but how do you top that
@@AnonYmous-ez4es the darkness is not the kind of band that makes songs that are cool now but shitty tomorrow. they're classic makers. you may not dig it now but you'll dig it someday.. Limp Bizkit meanwhile made songs that are forgettable as fuck after it wore out on people.
They do actually have very lyrical songs that have deeper meaning but this was a party single for touring. Listen to "The One" from the same album or Hold On, Underneath The Gun, Let Me Down to name a few.
I tried listening to The One after reading your comment. Liked the intro, enjoyable guitar, but still the lyrics sounds like something that I'd write in my teenage emo phase year. It was nostalgic thanks 👍
It was the era of teenage angst and it's the audience they targeted and successfully captured simple feelings, simple lyrics and a good beat, at that age I was all about it and nostalgia keeps us listening.
"little DJ Lethal!" the hidden track with stiller at the end of the album is gold!! The album before this was good, 'Rearranged' is such an amazing track. One of the best bass lines in history. Never thought it would say that 😂
Full disclosure: Limp Bizkit was always my guilty pleasure, and once I hit my 30s I started to fully embrace my inner weirdo. They toured earlier this year and came to a town 20 minutes from me so I figured BUCKET LIST let's get tickets. MY DUDES - it was the best show I've ever been to. Super chill, super fun, full of love and understanding. They're good fuckin guys.
Came up at turn of the century too. LB just crosses the line of cringe that I'll allow. I think Korn was my limit when it came to guilty pleasures even back then 😅. I am gonna see ratm at Madison Square garden in couple weeks so I'm not immune to nostalgia. Though to even compare these bands...
I think they were everyone’s guilt pleasure. Never been to a festival where anyone was willing to skip LB. I’ve seen them invigorate crowds more than the headlining bands playing 5 hours after them
I keep loving your stuff Snr Hawkins. The delivery and content is world class. I’d love to see you hosting some interviews with some of your rocknroll chums.
I was 15 when this came out, was just getting into music and absolutely loved it. But I agree with everything you've said 😂 I still have a lot of nostalgic love for Chocolate Starfish but honestly, my favourite album is their debut. It's raw, very well produced (but not over-produced) and much more chaotic than their "pop" efforts. Haven't heard the new album, I refuse to buy digital. CD or nothing.
This band is my guilty pleasure. I stopped trying to memorise the lyrics as I get older because they're just vapid anyway. I just think Fred's vocal is just another instrument to the catchy music, esp the bombastic riff Wes always does. That makes him more bearable 😂
Their big singles all have a catchy chorus/chant that sticks in your head. Rollin', Break Stuff and Nookie are the songs I remember. They were a able to mix rap and rock.
Thankyou for the best laughs! Thank you especially for the Blur video, the Iggy video, the love of NIN and Depeche Mode, ghost stories and the longest silence in this video. You are hilarious. I teach audio engineering, music programming and podcasting and I keep telling my students to watch your videos because they are simply excellent and insightful. They look at me like I'm nuts, but I'm going to tell them it's for their assessment. Then they'll take me seriously. Click farming at its best! Thank you Justin!
Like The Darkness, Limp Bizkit are one of the most polished live bands I’ve ever seen. Yeah, the put on a show but more importantly they sound incredible! Limp Bizkit don’t take them selves too seriously, neither do their fans, you’re gonna go see them have an incredible time and feel like you would have paid double the price, that’s what music’s all about.
Hey Justin, I love your videos. I’m serious, I reaaaally wasn’t into the darkness but as a fellow musician I love that you can dig on Wes Borland. Also I love that this came out when I was 16 and as giga cringe as it is I will stand proud and say this shit was the most important thing in my life back then. You believed in a thing called love, Fred durst believed in doing it all for the nookie and whatever rollin’ is…
And also anyone can like anything, so if my dude was a 15 year old chav and liked the darkness and I was a 19 year old who like the Dillinger escape plan and Kelly Clarkson but also played in a punk rock band that sounded like the distillers none of us are wrong. Have fun, music is fucking awesome 🫶
Limp Bizkit is, and always has been, a band to allow people to disengage their brains and listen to an actually quite unique mish-mash of metal, trip-hop and rap Dumb lyrics, fun hooks, and zero ego regarding musical integrity.
Hey Justin, would love to hear you react to Elliott Smith - he’s a songwriting genius in my humble opinion. ‘Needle in the hay’ is particularly worth checking out.
I saw Limp Bizkit at Sonisphere, Knebworth, 2014. Up to that point on the Friday it was a dead festival. They could see that the crowd needed lifting and they absolutely delivered. After the opener everybody was bouncing! I was with a number of seasoned metal heads and none of us could resist! I was a great, great ride. The Prodigy headlined and there is no doubt in my mind that it would not have been anything like the same epic gig had Limp Bizkit not set the crowd up for utter abandonment beforehand. Yes it’s dumb, but that’s the point, it’s an indulgence. And I think that there are parallels there with the indulgence that the Darkness so skilfully provided as well.
I remember this video won "Best Rock Video" at the MTV VMAs in 2001. I read that the band received a letter from the World Trade Center thanking them for featuring the Twin Towers in their video. The next day, the WTC was destroyed on 9/11.
After receiving the highest honor of a VMA for limp bizkit rocking on top of them, they really couldn't look forward to anything anywhere near as cool happening ever again, it's all downhill from there. It's like yeah we might as well go out with a bang. Makes sense to just destroy them.
It's a little known fact, but declassified documents show that most of the structural damage that brought the towers down had already been done by the totally sick and dope limpbizkit performance on the rooftop some months prior to 9/11.
@@elponchex Yawn. By the way, I saw the previous response you edited then deleted and you decided to post another response a couple minutes later. Weak. You're not that good at being edgy even if you tried. You even liked your own comment lol
When I was 13 in 1978 I heard 'Roxanne' on a shitty AM car radio. It changed my (young learning how to play guitar) life. I've met more people throughout all this time that hate that song than like it. The quality of the song doesn't change its importance to a moment in time I will never forget.
I was definitely at the right age to think that Limp Bizkit was cool. Had the red backwards hat and this was the first album I got on Napster 😆 I know it’s garbage lyrically, but the technical prowess of the band is surprisingly good for what is essentially “pop rap metal”.
Music is similar to Movies in away. If you go in with the right expectations, you can have fun with it....even if the content is puddle deep. Rollin made people want to grab a pretend steering wheel and enjoy the moment. The charts reflected that. Songs like this make you feel something, without thinking about it. Once you start thinking about the content....the party is over....lol.
There were two versions of this song put out, both on the album and the other version was the b-side also. This is the air raid vehicle version, but there was also the Urban Assault Vehicle version later in the album which I always preferred, and it was a collaboration with some members of Wu-Tang Clan and it was great
Rollin' wasn't anywhere near my fave LB track, but my god, i do love these guys! Chocolate Starfish'... Awesome album!! I liked quite a lot of the Nu Metal bands but Limp Bizkit will always be where this movement was, for me. So underrated, both in songwriting and as musicians. It's a shame, because it seems to have become a 'thing' to hate on Fred and the guys. Never quite understood that but, hey, each to their own. Not sure what is going on with Fred's health at the moment, but i sincerely wish him well. Fantastic band, and absolutely nobody will tell me otherwise! Cheers Justin... 🤟😎

Subjectively, I loved Limp Bizkit growing up. It was counter culture, attitude, rebellious for the sake of being rebellious. It tied in with both rock and rap culture and Fred Durst seemed really cool to us 12 year old middle class white kids that never had a real problem, and were just fuelled by hormones. Objectively, however, the band itself was fine, just like any other, but Fred Durst really is an anomaly. He has produced some of the worst lyrics of all time (Hey kids, take my advice, you don't want to step into a big pile of shit), and he spoke, dressed and acted like a teenager when he was in his 30s, which is I think why Limp Bizkit have been the subject of such ridicule over the years. This being said, there is no LB without Fred, and would they have been as successful without the loudmouth manchild as their brand ambassador? Probably not. One thing's for sure, there's not many other bands that can do what Limp Bizkit can do, for so long, so successfully, and whatever you think about them, you have to respect their success and longevity.
the problem is it wasnt some kind of punk ethos, it was pure toxic masculine destruction for the sake it it. thats not counter culture, thats counter productive. fight the system, dont fight your own means of rebellion. musically i never liked them so maybe im biased. but i also think they were a cultural blackhole in the form of a bunch of misogynistic fucktards then i watched the woodstock 99 documentary... that was just the shit icing on an already terrible cake.
Yea i agree. I think of those early 2000s and at least rebellion was still a thing. But now, every "artist" is just a corporate shill. Makes me appreciate nu metal so much more
Counterculture 🤣🤣🤣🤣 that’s the funniest thing I’ve read today, they were/are mainstream corporate whores and always were. Nothing remotely underground or subversive about them at all.
back in 2000 I helped set that record for fastest selling rock album. I was 14 and bought that shit the DAY it came out. I can very much admit its corny as hell, but I loved it. and I still have the cd and listen to it maybe once a year.
“It’s a kinda hybrid that makes me nervous..” Linkin Park would like a word with you.. haha Seriously though, the Linkin Park and Jay-Z album was genuinely pretty amazing. But to be fair, Linkin Park walks a very difficult line, very well.
Should have no shame in what you like….. not a big fan of theirs…..I like only a few songs…… don’t understand the hate for the band….. they sold a lot of albums and had sold out tours…..
The Audioslave video was for "Cochise". Lots of fireworks were set off in its making. Limp Bizkit is like the McDonald's of metal; cheap and easily consumed with no discernible value that leaves you feeling shitty once imbibed. Who doesn't love a cheeky Maccies once in a while though? ;)
I agree with all of that except for the "it makes you feel shitty" part. If it made their listeners feel shitty, they would have no fans. Music is a lot more subjective than food. With food, you obviously get what you pay for, but the quality of music is much more subjective. But, I suppose you could argue that it's cheap, because of the lack of emotional depth.
I have nothing bad to say about this song. Too many high school disco memories from this song. The riff has presence and the chorus smacks. I can live with basic lyrics.
some of the best riffs in the mainstream rock scene imo. I understand the hate for Fred durst vocals they're obviously not for everyone but I really enjoy them and find the lyrical content hilarious. I feel like if u can look past the cringe and silliness of glam metal and cock rock then you can do it with a band like Limp Bizkit
@@SamSitar99 id honestly argue few do heavy groovy riffs better than borland and john otto and sam are a great v underrated rhythm section and one of the best from the 90s in my opinion. I understand the durst comment tho. Still like him tho ;)

I also, classed and knew them as a guilty pleasure, however, when i saw them at DOWNLOAD the second they came on stage there was a tangible electricity. The atmosphere was palpable. Their performance was amazing and along with Prodigy that day, they absolutely killed it. Fantastic feel good live band that left the entire crowd exhilerated and exhausted. What more do you want from a gig?
Fred Durst recently had to cancel a tour due to a serious health concern. Hoping it's nothing major but the way he looked when he was announcing it the dude looked genuinely scared. Send some prayers to him I'm sure he'll be needing them.
I loved Limp Bizkit for a good couple of years. Them and Linkin Park helped me on my journey into and through rock music and I'll always be grateful. Still listen to both of them from time to time and enjoy it. And I don't care what people think!
How dare you say " Limp Bizkit" and " Linkin Park" In the same f****** sentence! Linkin Park actually had some talent and good songs whereas limp Bizkit was just mindless b*******. Btw, on another note, out of curiosity, who was actually listening to limp bizkit back in the day? Was it college kids, middle school kids, who? Limp Bizkit came out when I was a teenager and I don't think I've ever met a limp Bizkit fan in real life, ever-- I remember having this discussion decades ago with my friends, I was like "who the f*** would listen to this s***?" Never in my life have I ever set down in someone's car and they were like " hey let's put limp Bizkit on". I don't get it?

They're filming on top of the south tower of the World Trade Center building btw, I think about that every time I see the video. I bought the first couple of Limp Bizkit records. Korn was very huge at the time, and they gave LB the co-sign and that instantly gave them fans. I saw Limp Bizkit once in 1998, they just had their first record out, it was pretty good at the time I think?
Limp Bizkit and The Darkness are 2 of my favourite bands. Rollin was a commercial hit for Bizkit but I think you should listen to the entirety of chocolate starfish instead of picking apart just one track.
@Justin Hawkins Rides Again I love your soft spoken, literal breakdown of “Rollin” reminds me of Warren G’s regulators entry on Wikipedia. I bought this album in 2001 as an 18 year old. It wasn’t long until it was banished to the bottom of the CD stack. That said, been listening to it again over the past year. Some great tunes on that album. Especially compared to modern music.

I like your take on this. Fred durst in my eyes has created his own “Chad” impression. As Finn Mckenty said it so well He’s that guy on everyone’s block that’s in his garage all the time working on his car and tries to antagonize you as you come across him. (A character that is, as he evidently has now turned into “Dad Vibes”)
Come on Justin, lighten up. It's big, loud and dumb music for those times when you want to be big, loud and dumb. The club I used to go to went mental every time this came on. Saw them live after their fame faded somewhat, but they put on a great show.
"the unquestionnable truth" is their best and underrated album. They showed a little bit of maturity in it and the guitar work is really good. It's a shame they went back to mediocre since.
@@JManners10I think Mike had awesome sounding gear. Just watch the free show from Finsbury Park. Maybe the best sounding LB concert. But it's still Wes' riffs.😊

LB isn't exactly there to make you think. The music is just fun and will quickly get you energized. Even to this day, this song, Break Stuff, and Nookie still get me moving. I had no idea it was the fastest selling album of all time though. That's crazy. First time I ever heard them was at Ozzfest in 98 I think. They were on stage with a gigantic toilet bowl (true story) and I'm looking at them like, "Wtf is this garbage." A few months later though when the album finally came out and the songs started hitting, I was in.
Fred's peculiarities were a massive part of the band's success, but I've always wondered what the other musicians in the band could have done with a more accomplished singer and lyricist, with a different attitude. Top tier groove from Otto and Rivers, and creative playing from Wes.
I wonder if even with a different singer they would've sold any or much more than the 40 mil they did. Not too shabby for a silly (but super fun) band.
@@Oldhandlewasabitcringe significantly worse. matter of fact, they tried to do it without anthony once. he got fired for his heroin addiction during the recording of Freaky Style. Wes Borland absolutely doesn’t get enough credit
He also did post rock before it was popular ;p

"I know why you wanna hate me..." [TAKE A LOOK AROUND]
"You think your special, when you look down on me." [MY WAY]
And guaranteed you've heard both those songs.
What you didn't mention is just how tight their drummer is and his sound is also immense!
@@annemone4758 Still Limp Bizkit at the end of the day and a big part of many teenagers lives circa 95-2000.
Never thought it would say that 😂
Rearranged is such a good song.
Haha oh dude little DJ lethal! 😂👌 Literally just put the album on for the hidden track to have a good laugh before work 😅

LOL the pain on your face at 7.50 :D
“Eat crisps on the passenger seat” fahkin killed me… 😂😂😂
Their big singles all have a catchy chorus/chant that sticks in your head. Rollin', Break Stuff and Nookie are the songs I remember. They were a able to mix rap and rock.
well I mean rap can be rock lol rap isn't a musical genre.

Yes! that would be great!
Damn. Gotta watch that vid now.

I was never the biggest fan of them but I am however a huge fan of Wes. I love his style, his unique but also just a really good musician.
This is the air raid vehicle version, but there was also the Urban Assault Vehicle version later in the album which I always preferred, and it was a collaboration with some members of Wu-Tang Clan and it was great
Yes Justin freedom to just be and not analyze. It can be refreshing at times. Keep rollin, rollin, rollin Justin!😉 Thanks for the video 🥰

One thing's for sure, there's not many other bands that can do what Limp Bizkit can do, for so long, so successfully, and whatever you think about them, you have to respect their success and longevity.
the problem is it wasnt some kind of punk ethos, it was pure toxic masculine destruction for the sake it it. thats not counter culture, thats counter productive. fight the system, dont fight your own means of rebellion.
musically i never liked them so maybe im biased. but i also think they were a cultural blackhole in the form of a bunch of misogynistic fucktards
then i watched the woodstock 99 documentary... that was just the shit icing on an already terrible cake.

Who doesn't love a cheeky Maccies once in a while though? ;)
Fast Food Music for 15 years old baby metalheads… 😂😂😄
I agree with all of that except for the "it makes you feel shitty" part. If it made their listeners feel shitty, they would have no fans. Music is a lot more subjective than food. With food, you obviously get what you pay for, but the quality of music is much more subjective. But, I suppose you could argue that it's cheap, because of the lack of emotional depth.
