- In the latest episode of Chas Hates Surfing, the best-selling author Chas Smith weighs in on the Easter crucifixion of Brazilian world champ Gabriel Medina at the Bells Beach Pro.
After a shock loss in his round of 32 heat to San Clemente rookie Cole Housemand over Easter, thirty-year-old Gabriel Medina unleashed in his post-heat interview describing it as “the worst judging I’ve ever seen.”
Medina claimed he’d long been underscored by the judges (although it’s difficult to explain his three world titles) saying, “It’s bad for the sport, I’ve been through a lot of judging things but I feel like this is the worst one.… we pretend it’s not happening. It’s happening. It’s bad for the sport.”
Gabriel Medina’s outburst follows a long proud line of Brazilians complaining about losing, notably in El Salvador and at Surf Ranch.
Despite the apparent bias, Filipe Toledo’s two world titles were gifted in two-foot waves and Brazilians have won every world title since 2018.
Today, Chas Smith asks: "Has the World Surf League set up the judges as sacrificial lambs in order to be taken to Brazil and beaten in the streets?"
Adding, "That would be good views. That would be must-see TV."

Not only did he get buckets tossed on his head after making a poor decision to block Cole off the heat winning wave; he claimed himself as the best judge in the world😂😂😂

This dude 😂...Medina won that heat and everybody who can understand a bit of surfing manuevers know that too. But there will always be those jealous kook saying something agressive against brazzos surfers. Ozzys and americans are so lame...After Parko, Fanning and Kelly its just all about butt hurting against those who took over the scene.

I'm an Aussie surfer who has loved Medina since he was a grommet and I saw him surf in person at Margaret River. I'm not a fan anymore. On Instagram he put Laughing emoji on Cole's win. Cole is open about Medina being his childhood idol. Medina is a millionaire who surfs for a living and is taking himself too seriously.
Yeah by the agreement of most surfers from all nationalities, Gabby was correct that he should have won. But it wasn't the worst judging we have seen from the WSL, BY FAR.

I love Medinas surfing and WAS a fan until this week. Laughing at Cole's win, a young man who openly declared Medina as his idol is disgusting on so many levels! They should interview more losers so we can judge their humanity. Medina is a millionaire from surfing, us fans buy the gear from Rip Curl so they can pay Medina! I won't buy another Rip Curl product when their representative persists with an attitude like this.
Bottom line it was judged kinda bad. But holy crap not as bad as many other instances over the years. I was hoping Gabe would come back and congratulate Cole, someone that has a lot more to lose than Gabe. With the new dreadful WSL midseason cut , these kids can get bounced right back to the freakin challenger series, making little money and getting almost no coverage.

Nothing bad will happen to judges in brazil, maybe a little heat... but WSL judging is getting worse everyday
The end of the day it goes dark no really WSL needs to be interesting to viewers & sponsors to keep it strong ,it’s been too much Brazil for too long ,they tried the Aussie revival that hasn’t worked, now try the Californians so surfing keeps its cool . Not enough Europeans or SA in the mix right now. What it needs is another super star who can sell the sport . He or She just isn’t there right now.
Agreed that Medina won that heat. Also rember Taledo getting nines for 2 foot waves making spray wherever he could and winning the world title

I for one think Brazilian surfing is not very pleasing to the eye.
Do they rip? Yes.
But I would rather watch Occy surfing at an 8.2 level rather than watch Gabe surf a 10

Funny how most complaints come when the Brazo's lose...
In my opinion Cole won by a slim margin, Gabe's second wave had two transition floaters to get by crappy sections, while Cole's spray buried medina, biggest hit of the heat and finished it off. Sorry Gabe you don't just win every heat because you think you should

Because he's American,in new Zealand they are called seppos thats short for septic tank.Lots of talking..not much walking. Gab won that heat but when you have a mostly USA judge panel and not many of there people winning comps they change the program to suit.
At least he showed he has a pair and told it the way he saw it. About a million times better than the other standard post heat interviews. Makes the viewers want to watch rather than switch off.
