Happiness is an emotion, a temporary feeling that your brain produces, typically as a reward. A normal human experiences a wide range of emotions every day. Don't get caught up in the misconception that you should be happy all of the time. Anger, sadness, joy, fear, etc etc etc are all normal and healthy. Accept them as they come, embrace the fact that you have feelings, and remember that just because you are feeling (insert emotion here) doesn't mean that you will feel that way in an hour.
People need to hear this.
People need to listen to it.
Great reminder ❤

The fascinating thing about "doing something fun with someone you love" is that it feels impossible when you're amidst a depression. It all might sound exhausting, and even if you go do the thing, you might find yourself wondering if you're missing something that everyone else is experiencing. It's a paradoxical mess, and sadly so much more complicated than we'd like.
I believe part of the issue with this is we put to much pressure on time with loved ones. Every time we spend together has to be an event. If you have someone depressed in your life, offer for them to come over or for you to go to their, which ever is best for their comfort, have a sandwich, watch TV together (comedy would probably be best). That's it.
No big clean in preparation, no complicated set up for activities, can all be in pyjamas. If what a person needs is human contact, start small and casual, low effort so they don't feel burdened or like a burden.
You have to get uncomfortable to get comfortable. That's how the human brain has evolved to work.
In my experience depression is a system for mitigating anxiety. Im super anxious leading up to events, this peaks as i walk into a new situation, it begins to go away as i get comfortable with people, and then it peaks again after i leave.
I think it’s easy to talk yourself out of shit using all the negative emotions and forgetting the moments of joy. Depression will have you convincing yourself shit is bad out of fear of the associated anxiety.
I heard though the only thing you can do to help your mood is to keep doing what you know is good for you, exercise and friendships, even if it’s hard now, cause you know you’ll feel better later
I've had low depression for the last 4 years and I really couldn't enjoy anything with anyone anymore, now I know it's just chronic low back pain and fairly easy to fix. The funny thing i, I didnt take any meds during this period, only therapy, I think if I did I would never find the true cause.
I started doing drugs years ago as a teenage, got addicted to heroin, spent my whole life fighting heroin addiction. I suffered severe depression and mental disorder. Was diagnosed with cptsd. Not until my mom recommended me to psilocybin mushrooms treatment. Psilocybin treatment saved my life honestly. 6 years totally clean. Much respect to mother nature the great magic shrooms.
I love hearing great life changing stories like this. I want to become a mycologist because honestly mushrooms are the best form of medicine (most especially the psychedelic ones) There are so many people today used magic mushrooms to ween off of SSRI medication- its amazing! Years back i wrote an entire essay about psychedelics. they saved you from death buddy, lets be honest here.
Hey mates! Can you help with the source? I suffer severe anxiety, panic and depression and I usually take prescription medicine, but they don't always help. Where can I find those psilocybin mushrooms? I'm really interested in treating my mental health without Rxs. I live in Australia don't know much about these. I'm so glad they helped you. I can't wait to get them too. Really need a reliable source 🙏
YES sure of mycologist Pedroshrooms. Mushrooms literally got me off my feet and turned my whole life around. I am currently a housing manager for a recovery program. I wouldn't have been able to do that shit without psilocybin.
Thanks for sharing your story. That's rough I sympathize. Save your health save your mind. Life is better without heroin, cocaine, alcohol and cigarettes. And you have more money in your pocket. God bless everyone who has rejected the devils intentions to be addicted to alcohol and cigarettes etc which can cause so much damage to health. I will pray for you all.

"if you miss friendship love you may tend to smoke weed"
my friendless ass wondering why i love weed so much
😂😂😂
I've noticed a lot of stoners talk about weed like it's a friend. Meanwhile in my anecdotal experience it's much less common to talk about alcohol as a friend.
Weed just makes me super aware emphatically and I can understand more
It also explains to an extent why smoking daily often distances one from friendships and relationships. I guess you don't crave the validation and love, but it becomes a problem with tolerance and withdrawal
@serbal4747 yea 100% I was actually thinking abt this too, I struggle with communicating with people and making time for stuff because the hours after work feel like they teleport by due to me being high
in my eyes weed could be an insane tool for someone who is already depressed and struggles with having friends because what's it gonna do, make their non existent friends further? like at least coping with being alone would be manageable, but a weed addiction can destroy an already social person if they aren't careful
I am a Addictiontherapiest with psychoanalitic orientation. I can support this video. The best, and most difficult therapie against addiction is to increase the ability to maintain relatonships. We all have some flaws in our relationship patterns - trying to fix them is a great thing to do as a human.
Yeah what about being horrible at socializing?
@@nowonmetubeI hated this advice when I first heard it but it has some truth: you've got to practice. You'll get better at it with time.
You might have some social anxiety which makes it hard to start and some deeply ingrained negative self-perceptions about your social competency which will continue to make socialising sometimes feel very uncomfortable, but it'll be worse in the long run if you don't try anyway.
I've found going to music festivals some distance from home to be very useful because if I make a fool of myself socially there's a high probability I won't see that other person again, so it doesn't matter. Learning through mistakes you learn quick. Frankly, there is no other way to learn.
At 29, having practiced for a decade, I feel I'm fairly good at socialising now but still have my moments sometimes which hurt for a while afterwards. There will always be people who are better than me at socialising but as long as I do an OK job of it over all, that's good enough.
Something else that has helped, though just as a side effect, is having traumatic experiences that broke me as a person. Each time that's happened in a big way, I lose more of my ability to give a damn which makes doing things like socialising a bit easier. I'd highly recommend trying the first approach first though.
You're probably not as bad at it as you think you are.
@@nowonmetubeliterally what they said.. get better at it. That's it and there is no easy way around it,and coming from someone that was terrified to talk to a random cashier for 20 seconds, believe me I've tried, but it does get easier
@@nowonmetube For that is Micro-dosing Psilocybin for a few months while at the same time trying again and again with socializing, till ,the now highly plastic brain (thanks to Psilocibin), adapts and gets much better at socializing very very fast.
although, you're paid to say that, aren't you? I'm not accusing you of lying or anything, but... you can't inherently be trusted because you get paid to say what you say. You can go on doing what you do because the world is filled with broken people, you'll never run out of problems to try and make better... but there's something missing here, too.
I needed to hear this.6 months sober from weed and pills and I'm happy with my self-improvement, but I've focused on myself more than my social life which made me craving weed and pills. And now it all makes sense to me. Thank you

Never connected the dots that my THC dependency was caused by not only stupid choices and no self control, but absolute and utter loneliness. Not gonna stop, but it's cool to know :D
As a moderately autistic individual that has always struggled with socialization and making connections, it makes sense why I enjoy it so much. Besides using it for entertainment and because I simply enjoy it, I'm definitely using it to fill a void inside me that should be taken up by friendships and a social life. The problem is that I've felt generally unsociable all my life, I often talk in a very monotone manner and sometimes conversations can feel extremely draining or just pointless. I'd like to break free of that and be more outgoing and enjoy socializing more, but if that's really how I am as a person I don't know that there's much I can do to fix myself.
@@MnemonicHeadTripI know exactly how you feel about the draining conversations and feeling unsocial your whole life and I always wonder what causes my mind to fade away when people talk to me about anything could even be something that interests me but once they start getting into the convo that’s when I just struggle to hear the words it doesn’t matter if the background is dead in silence it’s just impossible

MDMA and Ketamine have already been approved in multiple countries for the treatment of various mental illnesses. In some people, psychoactive drugs can have a role to play in the promotion of their wellbeing.
Yes, some drugs are great in the right context. MDMA and psychedelics (MDMA can in some ways be considered psychedelic even if it isn't as visual) in particular taken with the right intentions on the right environment and with proper lengthy integration afterwards can be life changing in a good way
Also, set and setting play a BIG role...and these days, make sure you TEST your drugs, I have seen Molly and even gel tabs come up positive for fent at music festivals! I personally have buried good friends that thought they had molly and it was fent...they didn't do those kind of drugs, they liked trip drugs, and the festival it happened at, nobody knew wtf was happening to him, so nobody could save him, I really regret not going, because I carry a LOT of Narcan and could have recognized it and saved him.
I just wanted to note that MDMA has also been shown to stimulate oxytocin release, they missed it in the video
I am not aware of any country that mdma has passed phase 3 clinical trials in
that is very simplified statement you made there. MDMA is used in very, very controlled setting on groups of very well selected patients with PTSD and ketamine is used in very selected patient groups with depression refractory to other medications. Psychoactive drugs - even those used in medicine that are proven "clean" is very tricky thing because it is a well known fact that side-effects usually outweigh benefits by a lot. You sound just like some recreational drug user that tries to justify your habits by promoting benefits of drugs through biased and untrue statements.
This is by far the best documentary on drugs I've seen on RUclips. Kudos to the editing team!
idk why youtube recommended me this but this video is so well made and is exactly what i needed to hear, so thank you!!
I am sorry to say that the aproach to antidepressants in this video is completely wrong. If the explanation given were true, SSRI i.e. would work in minutes as cocaine does. Those antidepressants need from two weeks to a few months to being noticed, except for the undesired side effects that begin in hours. The working mechanism of these prescription drugs is not known. There are several hypothesis, i.e. increasing neurogenesis, changing some genes expression, or diminishing ruminant thoughts. This is why they need time and don't give pleasure or "high". Don't ask drug dealers for SSRI, NDRI, SDRI nor tricyclics.
Other completely different case are benzodiazepines (i.e. valium or xanax). These are more alike to abuse drugs. They begin to work (relaxtation, decreased anxiety, etc.) in less than an hour, produce tolerance and are addictive. They interact with the GABA neurotransmitter enhancing it by allosteric modulation. Not recommended for long time use. BTW, GABA is also a very important neurotransmitter.

You are missing some critical info that SSRIs only. work in 50% of the patients and that monoamine deficiency theory is rejected by modern studies meaning that having higher concentration of Serotonin in the synaptic cleft alone is not proven to elevate your mood, it is more complicated than that and still subject of research.

I love the clarity and differentiation of the different happiness chemicals.
However, you forgot to mention that hugs can release Oxytocin!
Happiness equals reality minus expectations.
This is probably one of the most gorgeously produced videos on the internet.
9:45 is so true, I remember feeling super tired, in pain from difficulty in sleeping from my blocked nose, but once I went to school, being among friends, teachers i loved, the pain should to disappear only to come back at home.
I think that one very important distinction that was not discussed in this video but should have been is to explain the difference between happiness and pleasure. For example, you can experience intense pleasure and, at the same time, be a very unhappy person. That is typically what some drugs will do for you. Pleasure is usually short-lived, but happiness is often a long-lived emotion. Except for that observation, I believe that this video is informative and was very well produced.
I think this is beautifully shot and produced, but I fear that others may have the same takeaway from this as I did. I left this video feeling that it reads the same as telling someone “You don’t have depression, you just need to make time with friends!”.
If you were truly able to find freedom from mental illness through “making dates with friends” I love that for you, but it’s irresponsible and dismissive of the material reality of clinical depression to suggest this as such a foolproof solution.
If calendar management was the cure to one’s depression then the medication seems wholly unnecessary to begin with.
100% agree but I don’t think that was the take away. the take away is if you are struggling with 1 or 2 cups, you can or should get medicated for that. But you cant fill all cups with medication alone. the value of human bonding and connection cannot and should not be undersold to people with real issues that need help. it should work together with medication to build good habits and find good relationships that ultimately lead to a better and more fulfilling life
The sucky thing abt certain videos is they don’t explain the sociology behind human suffering. It isn’t enough to say get friends when there is this contradicting massive order of expectations and cultures and anxieties manifested into our heads by the worldview we’ve been conditioned. Many of our morals on self esteem and self worth are scaled against our own naturally occurring thoughts, which can in itself fester a self hatred unbecoming of our true identity. Even the “acceptable” not conformity are still inherently labeled and differentiated which in itself are the building blocks of how we perceive the world. (labeling humans within language, when you create reality through a language cognition, will always lead to conflicts between the selves and others, because all people have a subjective definition to every label ever, an environment is built around perception and labels and myths of bad and good and moral shortcomings of racists and antis, the truth was no human was moral, morality was a thing one was taught in kindergarten, true racism, sexism, homophobia stems from a dissonance of hearing a label otherwise different than that of your believed own.) These labeling cultures are morally validated through many different ways but you probably can identify a lot on ur own, it just sucks videos like these never address things that aren’t there physically but present great stress and dissonance for most. But ya obviously society can’t let you know just how vitriolic society is lol
I cannot begin to explain how much this video helped by explaining how neurotransmitters work and what triggers them naturally or unnaturally (drugs).

This series is one of the most helpful piece of content I’ve ever watched in my entire life
There's this girl I worked with once, she was a small time rap singer-had a good run for some time, then earned a living as a successful content writer and think she got into social media also, has awesome cool and real friends she got from her previous jobs and her music pose, has a husband - awesome relationship, not toxic, he was there for her while depressed still is and she declares he's the best. yet she continues to be depressed, I don't know her family life very well as we're not that close but I feel like even if that's not the best she has real love, real friendship and very good income from something she loves and an awesome hobby/passion /talent aka music loved by everyone which she can at any point go back to, yet she's periodically depressed. That makes me think it takes more than just doing things with close people to make you happy.

Happiness will never come from outside, it only comes from within.
There is no substance, human, experience or anything that can bring long term happiness. Everything that comes from outside ourselves just comes and goes as the wind blows, but what comes from within, it will always stay in!
So what is the way
@@whatsanimesh here is something i found
Happiness is an emotion, a temporary feeling that your brain produces, typically as a reward.
Drugs are like friends: sometimes they are great, sometimes they are a pain in the *** that you're sorry you invited over. And we are talking about the same drug for instance drinking. One time the drink relaxes you & the next time the same drink makes you tired and grumpy because you want to go to sleep but can't at the moment. There is nothing magical about drugs. Like everything else, they cannot be consistently relied upon.
The intro cracked me up. Very interesting to say the very least. I am excited to see psychedelics finally being researched more closely again
On a certain level, we have a drug store in our brain, the neurochemicals that show up in flow: so dopamine, norepinephrine, anandamide, endorphins, and serotonin. If you were to try to cocktail the street drug version of that, right, you're trying to blend like heroin and speed and coke and acid and weed- and point is, you can't do it. It turns out the brain can cocktail all of 'em at once, which is why people will prefer flow to almost any experience on Earth. It's our favorite experience. It's the most addictive experience on Earth. Why? 'Cause it cocktails five or six of the largest pleasure drugs the brain can produce. We're all capable of so much more than we know. That is a commonality across the board. And one of the big reasons is we're all hardwired for flow, and flow is a massive amplification of what's possible for ourselves.
You forgot to explain what the fuck you mean by "flow"
Did you mention, "Flow" ?
By flow are you impling the flow state?
Not on certain level but on all levels
Like going with the flow?

For some its Success, for some Drugs, for some Travel, for some Persistence, Spirituality, Philosophy, Sex, Hardwork, Family or whatsoever but I see noone, who sits back take all of these things into consideration and try to find a good Balance of everything altogether. Its just don't happen.
I loved how this was so easily explained in each and every episode of this series focussing on each and everything so properly, the science of our body and which hormones are triggered by which activity and which accomplishment in our Life,
This was such a unique experience learning all this.
Max Joseph is just a Genius and I hope I can also create a series like this myself about an interesting topic like this someday in the future.
One of the highest quality videos I’ve ever seen
I didn't know what to expect going in this video
I ended up saving it as a mental health video

Amazing! One of the best educational videos I have ever seen in the internet. I love how you make the complex mingling of neurotransmitters graspable with the simple filling of glasses!
Beauty, connection, prayer and meditation are better than any drugs. The language people use to describe drug effects are spiritual in nature think about it. Terms like "get high" "smashed" "lose yourself" and so on all point to either obliterating or transcending the self. If this is your goal your more likely to find it at church than in a bottle.
By the end it seems being happy in this body is so hard.... but being sad is easy as everyday life. Like you have to do so much to stay happy and literally nothing to get sad and feel dire sorrow.
Last time i've seen you was on catfish back in the day, I never knew you had a youtube. This is awesome.
for your consideration: the book ‘you are the happiness you seek’ by rupert spira.
Oh my god turning this on without headphones at work was a bad idea 😂
Why?
I love the feel of the video, i hope they show this in schools health class
I am currently full sober and its the biggest high ever. I am in ketosis and eat organic food everyday. I feel amazing and reccomend everyone to reach sobriety.
This viedeo is insanely well made, and thus criminally underrated by the algorithm!
Honestly im really glad theres no drugs to alter oxytocin. I would be hooked on that shit so hard omg

this was so wonderfully and beautifully made! AND it was fascinating!
I think it has to be more complicated than that. I feel like in the future we will find out the difference and look bad like “damn we really believed in that?”
Honestly this could've been an hour long doc and I'd still watch it this just makes me thirsty for knowledge
feel like we're kinda glossing over the fact that some people have genetic brain disorders that require drugs to function properly. people with ADHD just have harder times than other people at doing the kind of work expected of them in modern society without something like adderall. not disagreeing with the overall message of the video, it just rubbed me the wrong way that you included a section of a guy talking about how he was just using adderall for free motivation and then didn't include the disclaimer that some people physically can't GET neurotypical levels of motivation without it.
I agree, I feel like this video is somewhat biased towards the idea that any drug interventions are ultimately useless. In the case of ADHD, there is a neurophysiological lack of dopamine that cannot be fully compensated for holistically (such as by going to dinner with friends), but drug interventions provide the best symptom management when combined with other vectors such as exercise, sleep, and diet [1]; as for SSRIs, they are crucial to helping severely depressed individuals regain a baseline level of functionality [2]. The same goes for people who do everything they possibly can to thwart depression and are still depressed. Also, SSRIs are effective at improving the quality of life for those with OCD as well, and interestingly, when combining SSRIs with CBT, have a pronounced positive impact on the quality of life as opposed to just using SSRIs alone [3].
A big takeaway with psychotropics and antidepressants in general is that they are not by any means a cure-they are essentially a tool to create a better environment for those who suffer from these disorders. Out of that environment, individuals can definitely improve their quality of life.
The video drops the ball with this-yes, SSRIs/stimulants may only fill certain voids in neurochemistry, but when those voids are filled, it creates a better foundation to restore the others.
[1] neurolaunch.com/why-cant-adhd-be-cured/ aggregates sources explaining multi vector treatment and how a balance is ideal vs. a “cure” for ADHD.
[2] www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/books/NBK361016/
[3] www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC6691487/ specifically mentions the need for multi vector treatment and that SSRIs may not be effective when not combined with CBT.
@@cdb979 i think the point the video was going for was that drugs are easy but sometimes harmful alternatives to what can be obtained naturally, and that it's ideal to replace the drug with a natural equivalent if possible. it just ignores the fact that it isn't always possible. i'm also in that "depressed all the time for seemingly no reason" camp without the right medication, but that's not due to my life circumstances, that's just bipolar.
I see surprisingly few comments about how good this video is! Both in terms of information and quality
That thing about aderal is so true. If somebody is into window frames and talks to me while I'm on adderal I will be all in on window frames aswell.
But tbh, I already kinda have those moments without adderal aswell. (thank you ADHD)
This is a mind-blowing video! I loved it! It’s bringing me closer to understanding better this world of the brain and drugs.
You did a fantastic job! Thank you 🫀

This might be the best made and most interesting and concise RUclips video I ever saw. Congrats on that peace of art!
So I started drinking first around 16 years old. My drinking increased in amounts and frequency. In my late teens I started Cannabis. Then when I was about 21 I was given Speed. Then I became a Speedhead for a solid 2 years (with a bit of Cocaine, Weed, LSD, GHB, Shrooms mixed in too!) Then Ecstasy became more frequent. Then on a comedown from a heavy weekend partying I tried Heroin at around 26, it completely wiped out the nasty comedown but then Heroin became more often. I then had a 20 YEAR battle with full blown physical addiction. Previously my addictions had been purely psychological but true physical addiction is ten times worse! Clean 5 years now but it weren't easy. Just NEVER give up, giving up!
its kind of important to know too, that just because we know what these drugs do in our synapses, does not mean that there are not MAJOR effects on the rest of our body, nerves, cells, organs, etc. --to assume these drugs only effect these little synapses in our brain is a wild misunderstanding of reality. also, we know VERY little about the real impact of ANYTHING on our bodies as a whole. also there are many different types of brain cells, different parts of those cells, all impacted differently than each other, on top of the fact that there isn't just one kind of receptor for each chemical, that's not true and often misunderstood too. we discover new receptors, types of cells, new parts of cells, every single year[across all of biology].

whats the lack for serotonin? I used to have clincial depression and did alot of mdma in my 20s which made my depression worse. I have now learned to find balance by eating and sleeping well. Also working out has helped me that I no longer feel any depression.
I did not watch the video because I was actually interested in psychedelics and wanted to see if the thumbnail said anything about them.
However in my own experience, and I have tried a lot, you really don't need any drugs to appreciate life. Just need to work on your own creations and a lot of good people to support you, and you support them, and that's magic.
Man this was so well produced, deserves more recognition for sure
where its epinephrine and norepinephrine? also mdma produces incrases in oxytocin
in my personal experience, psychedelics usually make me feel more connected to everyone around me, like we’re all just human
The "science" part was so over simplified that it's justified to call it lie.
Example, depression is *not* due lack of serotonin and SSRIs do *not* fix depression by increasing serotonin. Surely SSRIs increase serotonin levels quickly, but that doesn't mean your depression is gone or that it will necessarily ever be gone with the drug. Transmitters are like different colored cables in complex machine. You are unlikely to fix the machine by changing thicker red cables to everywhere (IE increasing transmitter everywhere). It's more important when and what happens with the cables. Thus currently there is no drug that leads to long term happiness.
You never fail to impress Max! Truly inspiring and creative work
where is the estrogen in the beginning of the video? What about women emotions, is their sex drive is also driven by testostron?
I came to the comments to ask this same question. I'm so curious!
Yea... It's about time I got some help I think. I find myself needing all of or most of those chemicals. Been self medicating my entire life. Tried going out by my own hand a few times. Still here. Time to change. 35 is an ok age to grow up right? 😅
