kudos to Kelia, to stand for what s right!!! down with these corp takeovers, refurbishing all to an even greater profit... the shameful greed is everywhere... boycott the big surf co. price over-inflated, product quality gone to poo+ at best.... not what it used to be
Miki Dora warned the surf community from the 1960's until his death about us embracing what he referred to as the Wall Street flesh merchants. He saw them exploiting the lifestyle and then throwing it to the curb. It looks like his concerns are comming true
I follow Nate's channel and I gotta say that the door swings both ways with his choice of sponsors. I'm pretty sure that the majority of his fan base is kids, yet he has a gambling outfit for a sponsor. I understand that they pay the best, but if it's all about the money then it's all about the money. It just seems to me that promoting gambling to a bunch of kids for that sake of a paycheck might not be the best way to "inspire" children. JS
How does the company even under a new owner shred a contract? I mean legally. Is it renewal time and ABG are offering a new (terrible) deal? Is there a clause that allows either party to cancel the contract w/ or w/o cause?
@@joeblow1942 I agree with you in that what is on paper matters & is a legal binding document. Legal contracts can be written with stipulations. It is the responsibility of both parties to understand the contract. I guarantee if the parent company did something illegal Kelia Moniz would of sued for breach of contract.
The world as a whole has gone corporate(shit). We are all just dollars for the uber rich. We the average consumer have all the power. Example of this is Budweiser😂 power to the people!!!!!!!!!
I don’t think the big name surfers even care. I remember when Hurley sold out to Nike a long time back and the next thing you saw were the team riders wearing Nike gear. There needs to be a new league as well which will boost competition and prize money. Still I don’t see how most surfers will be able to travel and surf comps unless they’re already well off financially if companies keep cutting talent.
You can't boost prize money with out dramatically shifting how the tour is run or bringing in new sponsors. The current WSL has been trying to draw in new sponsors its entire life, so that is out the window as an option. You could parse down the tour, just make it the top 16 surfers every year, you could axe the live webcasts and just put out a daily highlights video and score sheets. No one cares about surfing, and likely never will. Look at the droves of kooks out there on their wavestorms. What joy does Filipe sticking a full rotation bring them? It is like expecting hockey players to care about speed skating.
This buying of 'Boutique' core brands by the all encompassing big brands seems to be the way of the world no matter what the industry. Look at the alcohol brands, what starts off as a cool micro brewery that does well by word of mouth and clever marketing by 'cool' people, who are either founders or share holders, ultimately get bought out by the major players. Who could blame them, these core companies are started with love and by hardworking people who are not corporate by nature, they are offered life changing fortunes to sell. I think it all went to far. When big money started to pour in the end of the 80´s, surfing started to suck. We know that everything that is good will grow, people will share the stoke and more people will want to have fun, that is good, if it is organic. The problem of big corporations is that they will always answer to the market and the market doesn't care about opinions or culture, it cares for profits and growth and that is the capitalistic game that we accept and somewhat love. We as surfers are just confused, in one hand we feel that this is more like an art form or a spiritual demonstration than a sport, on the other hand we see that our art is getting sold and we want to get paid like pro basketballers. It may ruin some pro surfers life's but the best thing that could happen to surfing would be that everybody would get fired, that the corporations would empty themselves from real connection to the roots and in a cost cutting measure would only rely on AI or models to sell their t-shirts and girl jackets, the sport would eventually implode and a new roots based beginning would ensue
Her 90% pay cut would be an amount that most Americans would struggle with as an annual income amount (just trust me on this- I know the amounts firsthand). On top of that, there’s travel expenses… it’s not doable for her and these other athletes going through the same thing.

Back to core locally owned. When I was a pup I thought Quiet Flight was the best surf brand in the world.
HSS here in Huntington Beach. Harbour Surfboards in Seal Beach.
Both family owned and operated by SURFERS!! SUPPORT OUR COMMUNITY!
these brands are all about to be losing money. nobody is gonna buy or wear it anymore.
Good. The surfing pandemic is out of control.
They aren’t “about to lose money.” I’m fairly certain they already are.
Yeah nah, there’s plenty of people in Oklahoma they’ve never heard of her and will keep eating Roxy

I think Jamie O'Brien showed all the surfers the way.
Own your brand & rep. it yourself.
I swear I got a sales call about my business being owed money, and it had to be Chas.
Competitive surfing is like watching grass grow on cement.
Says the kook who can't surf! Aloha!
Great news , surfing needs a reset
What?! Nate Florence just had the best year of his career so far. How stupid could Vans possibly be?
Educational! Fuck I get choke billabong shirts! 🤣
Now i know why john john ditched some sponsers and started his own brand

Renewal time or bankruptcy reorganization.
No, written into most contracts is that the business can change the contract at will

Well said.
I´m in with the shaming people who wear those brands.
U mean u cant buy a house on the beach from just surfing anymore?
Buy it, hollow it out, bankruptcy court- profit

Let's see if WSL still presents these brands as title sponsors, whilst the competing prosurfers go stickerless.
