Despite centuries of evidence proving otherwise, there is an alarming number of people around the world who genuinely believe that the earth is flat. Bill Nye The Science Guy, NASA astronomer Michelle Thaller, and Neil deGrasse Tyson strongly disagree.
From simple experiments like standing at a seashore or looking through a telescope at other planets, to reading about navigation or viewing photos of Earth taken from space, the scientists share several ways that flat Earthers can see the truth for themselves.
Tyson explains why this trend doesn't qualify as a scientific debate and why it is actually dangerous for people to believe and, even worse, pass on these objectively false ideas.

NEIL DEGRASSE TYSON:
Neil deGrasse Tyson was born and raised in New York City where he was educated in the public schools clear through his graduation from the Bronx High School of Science. Tyson went on to earn his BA in Physics from Harvard and his PhD in Astrophysics from Columbia. He is the first occupant of the Frederick P. Rose Directorship of the Hayden Planetarium. His professional research interests are broad, but include star formation, exploding stars, dwarf galaxies, and the structure of our Milky Way. Tyson obtains his data from the Hubble Space Telescope, as well as from telescopes in California, New Mexico, Arizona, and in the Andes Mountains of Chile.Tyson is the recipient of nine honorary doctorates and the NASA Distinguished Public Service Medal. His contributions to the public appreciation of the cosmos have been recognized by the International Astronomical Union in their official naming of asteroid "13123 Tyson".

BILL NYE:
Bill Nye, scientist, engineer, comedian, author, and inventor, is a man with a mission: to help foster a scientifically literate society, to help people everywhere understand and appreciate the science that makes our world work. Making science entertaining and accessible is something Bill has been doing most of his life.
In Seattle Nye began to combine his love of science with his flair for comedy, when he won the Steve Martin look-alike contest and developed dual careers as an engineer by day and a stand-up comic by night. Nye then quit his day engineering day job and made the transition to a night job as a comedy writer and performer on Seattle’s home-grown ensemble comedy show “Almost Live.” This is where “Bill Nye the Science Guy®” was born. The show appeared before Saturday Night Live and later on Comedy Central, originating at KING-TV, Seattle’s NBC affiliate.
Nye is the host of three currently-running television series. “The 100 Greatest Discoveries” airs on the Science Channel. “The Eyes of Nye” airs on PBS stations across the country.
Bill’s latest project is hosting a show on Planet Green called “Stuff Happens.” It’s about environmentally responsible choices that consumers can make as they go about their day and their shopping. Also, you’ll see Nye in his good-natured rivalry with his neighbor Ed Begley. They compete to see who can save the most energy and produce the smallest carbon footprint. Nye has 4,000 watts of solar power and a solar-boosted hot water system. There’s also the low water use garden and underground watering system. Dr. Michelle Thaller is an astronomer who studies binary stars and the life cycles of stars. She is Assistant Director of Science Communication at NASA. She went to college at Harvard University, completed a post-doctoral research fellowship at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) in Pasadena, Calif. then started working for the Jet Propulsion Laboratory's (JPL) Spitzer Space Telescope. After a hugely successful mission, she moved on to NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC), in the Washington D.C. area. Ya know, flat earthers always has answers. They have a mental disorder. To question things is really good. But this is being quite mentally crazy.
This was a terrible video that didn't even mention the two main indisputable evidences of a spherical Earth that flatearthers can easily verify for themselves.
1) The Moon flipping upside down when we travel from one hemisphere to the other.
2) Two counter-rotating celestial poles.
No flatearther has EVER been able to explain those two simple things, and for such prominent so called 'science educators' to not even mention them in this vid means that they have badly failed in their primary aim.
And for the woman to say that she 'didn't even know where to start' was just downright unprofessional.
No wonder there are so many flerfers in the US if these are the best 'educators' over there.
And their condescending attitude will only alienate flerfers even more.

I debated a flat earther once. He stormed offf saying he’d walk to the edge of the Earth to prove me wrong. He’ll come round - eventually.

The sun just goes away you can bring back the sun into focus when it allegedly goes over the curved horizontal line with nice optics you cannot see Africa from the coast because the atmosphere is dense things fall because they’re heavier than air ,helium balloons, smoke, birds just defy all rules of the theory of gravity or is it because they’re lighter than air

It's not just that. Not only do they vote, they also spread all kinds of misinformation. We could have beaten COVID just like we crushed Polio back when people trusted vaccines and were eager to get them. You can't reason someone out of a position that they were not reasoned into.
It is very hard to reason with a flat earth believer. You have to actually sit down with them and from a relationship of teacher/student in order for them to slowly realize the evidence we have. Simply debating them or telling them to do research isnt enough since they purposely do not look into any form of evidence that contradicts their views

@@ALofiLife the earth is spherically shaped. It is not a disk. It is very large. It is so massive that it has its own gravitational pull. Gravity is not a theory. It is a force that pulls everything towards its center. That is why dropped objects, like car keys and microphones for example, fall 'down'. Children get this, but grown adults are having trouble with this concept. So much so, that they are denying everything that they have been taught and would rather believe a crackpot idea spouted by a tattoo artist instead of every scientist who ever lived.
No wonder Bill Nye looks disappointed. He spent a good portion of his life educating the future. This is what the future has produced; willful stupidity .

The rise in the number of flat earthers is not the result of recent discoveries of hidden primitive tribes in the jungle, it is the result of intelligent people who are not satisfied with being spoon fed what is called "settled science", and want to discover the truth for themselves, and are willing to do the work to study the problem for themselves, and this number is continually increasing.

Why even argue about something that doesn't matter in day-to-day life? Believing the Earth is flat has nothing to do with anything for the vast majority of people. If you tell me that person A believes the Earth is flat and person B knows it's round that doesn't tell me anything about which person is a morally better person. And that's what matters.

I have a friend who believes the earth was flat. I was shocked he did. When talking about it he said "i think its more about not trusting the governement" to which I said "ok, fair, but why believe something so idiotic and easily disproven it distracts from something that does have some merit?"
Yet = the rest of the world says exactly the same thing......... So the _"I don't trust the government - or even NASA for that matter"_ argument represents the worst of facile logic. Even if you completely discount what your own government asserts = other governments - some who may not be friendly to one's own - happen to agree. This when the world rarely agrees upon anything.

I was once in love with a girl who couldn’t understand that earth was smaller than the sun because the sun was just a small disk in the sky. I don’t think anyone fell out of love faster than I did.

Lol my ex-wife thought the sun and the moon were the same thing. Which I'm sure she got from her mom because when she was 57...yep 57, when she noticed the sun and the moon in the sky at the same time and didn't know how it was possible...and that was after her daughter told me what she thought. No - Not if the Bible 'told' them it was flat!!! It doesn't of course, but their church leaders convince them it does - or 'should'. Flat earth belief is a deliberate rejection of the Science that they fear is trying to disprove God and they are the true believers who have to fight against everything non-'biblical' to retain the 'Truth' of God and their bible.

When you tell someone that he can't ask questions just because it's something that becomes normal in our life, it constitutes a real problem, and it is against freedom of thinking and analysis and against intelligence. I had an argument with someone about this before. Science doesn't really help. Whatever sources you give, they claim they're fake. Whatever evidence you provide, they provide some really quite imaginative answers with zero evidence, but that never bothers them.

I think the scientific community is taking the wrong approach with flat earth debunking. It shouldn't be a study in math or physics, it should be a study in psychology. My biggest issue. I live in the UK where we have about 1 hour of twilight sunrise/sunset all year. As I started travelling to places of a more southern latitude, I noticed that hour I was used to became shorter. When the sun sets on the equator it just goes black immediately. Widest part of the planet so stands to reason. The flat earth model must be extremely sophisticated to take that into account!

Even day and night make no sense on the flat earth model. They show this model where the sun (supposedly very near inside their imaginary dome) is on one side of their flat earth and the moon on the other (which of course is ridiculous when the moon is clearly visible during the day sometimes, but not always, yet strangely that never happens to the sun, despite being many magnitudes brighter), so what is going on with sunsets when only half the sun is visible on the horizon? And why does the sun only illuminate half the earth? All logic says that nighttime wouldn’t exist on a flat earth. The problem with the flat earth model (to the extent one exists) is that it has more holes than a colander.
The Sun & Moon are localized light that rotate around Earth. Not that complicated. A spinning water ball moving through an infinite space galaxy is far more illogical than a FE model.

Actually, the sun and the moon don't appear to be spheres for sure, but they do appear to be round, for sure.
Of course, 3D spheres always appear to be perfectly round when viewed from any angle, but so are 2D disks when viewed exactly face (not edge) on.
Don't get me wrong, I certainly do believe the sun, the earth and the moon are spheres. But an argument that a Flat Earther could make (all other evidence aside) is that the moon could be a disk that is tidally locked to the earth - so that it always shows its perfectly round flat face when we look at it from earth.

So for every mile you fly straight over the supposed sphere earth 25,000 miles in circumference, the earth must curve away from you 8 inches. So the second mile 64 inches, etc.
If you were to start flying dead straight one inch off the ground over a ball earth 25,000 miles in circumference, after 1000 miles of dead straight flying, the earth would curve 127 miles under you never lifting the nose once! 127 miles over the earth is ORBIT!! If orbit was even reality. Again orbit is only seen on tv.
Spinning ball earth is only seen on tv never in real life.

Explain that to me. If you could also explain how we have video at over 120,000 ft of altitude with no visible curve. I would assume at some point we would see it. Im not saying its flat but what I am saying is we've been lied too. With those 2 examples theres only 2 logical conclusions.. It is not objectively true though, do your own due diligence and research it. Those boats dissappearing over the horizon is from perspective and you can zoom in and they will reappear. Water always finds its own level, its not curved.

🎯 There was a doco some years ago about Flerfs. To one with a discerning eye it was easily recognizable that while some Flerfs were clearly highly educated = all manifested dysfunctional personalities.
These were individuals who _"did not fit in"_ as the saying goes and who often represented people incapable of normally participating in society. First example is Michelle's claim that the hull of the boat disappears due to curvature. She claims binoculars prove this. If you or Michelle take a zoom camera to the beach, you'll see something other than what she claims. If you zoom in once the boat disappears, it comes right back into focus......true science requires experimentation; try it sometime! Quit relying on your

Let me share a bit of information. I recently joined a flat earth group just to waste a bit of time at work. And oh man... I had no idea what I was getting myself into, so let me share a bit of extra things that I've personally noticed.
1. They don't understand equivocation fallacies AT ALL. Science is a religion (heard that before from creationist, no surprise) but their belief system strangely is not. I even had one guy say that "globe heads" believe in Scientology... despite the fact that Scientology and science are 2 completely different things. Even when I presented clear evidence of this, they didn't care.
2. They generally won't answer direct questions. Don't expect too much math. (unless the numbers = 666... after they adjust the numbers a bit dishonestly) If they do respond to questions, more than likely their answers will not actually address your question. For example, I asked one of them how do you tell the difference between a naturally occurring pattern in nature and intentional manipulation? They showed me a picture of the planet Pluto where they drew Pluto (Disney's dog) on the planet where they saw a pattern. They couldn't tell me other than "its common sense" as to why they would put Pluto on a dog, but when I said I see the Bat symbol in the clouds suddenly that's nature with no explanation, so they enjoy special pleading.
3. Just want to reinforce that any images you show them contrary to their belief system is fake, CGI, or photoshop, usually with no explanation given. Any picture that does fit their world view is real, because reasons. I even caught them in lies where they had images that THEY PHOTOSHOPPED CLEARLY and still they didn't even admit any wrong doing. We have google image search now, you can't just do that and get away with it.
4. The more credentials you have, the LESS trustworthy of a source you are. Pretty much, if you're some unemployed loser trying to stick it to the man with your tin foil hat equipped and a youtube account, you're automatically the authority on every aspect of science, above those who go to Satanic Freemason universities like everyone in an actual science field has.
5. Because the Vatican supports the big bang and evolution, those beliefs belong to the Vatican... because reasons.
6. They are LOADED with retarded memes of misinformation, logical fallacies, and just plainly false nonsense, and even if you refute it, they'll report that same meme 10 seconds later in another spot.
7. Bill Nye and Neil deGrass Tyson are evil.
8. No single explanation is ever provided as to why all the world's governments need to lie about the shape of the earth to accomplish anything.
9. If there is anything wrong with their models of reality, they will not address it no matter how many times you point it out. They'll only attack actual science, despite clearly not knowing or understanding any of it.
10. Even though they do not trust NASA, if someone claims to be from NASA, makes a video supporting flat earth or other conspiracies, that person suddenly has credibility despite being from an organization that has no credibility... like what?
11. No surprise but they don't understand basic logic.
12. I'd say about 90% or more are religious, but for some reason they only believe in the old testament generally. Now, despite they've never seen or tested anything in the bible, they believe it 100% based purely on faith alone.
13. There are no actual established models of the flat earth. They all claim something a little different despite none of them having any test to prove that. For example, some believe in an infinite plane, while other believe in a floating dinner plate with a dome.
14. Only trust your eyes. If you see flat when you look out at the horizon, then everything is flat. However, if I'm blind or close my eyes, oddly enough things still exist although I'm supposed to trust my eyes.
15. If your explanation is more than 3 sentences, its too long and they won't read it. Funny, because they'll spam so many memes that 3 sentences simply aren't enough to refute them. Also funny, these guys supposed did a lot of research, reading I assume, but they can't read a paragraph that directly responds to their claims because its too long... what?

@@mancebo7 Hmm, not sure there's a connection here. Other countries with fair numbers of flat Earthers (based on chatting with thousands over the years): the Phillipines, England, Romania, Malaysia, Germany. Not many here in Austria, and I've never heard of any from Japan or North Korea.

You can go to the most conservative cultures like Saudi Arabia or some tribe somewhere in Africa and they can think that there are only two genders, and yet, all the scientific objective natural laws still apply to them. Hell, you could even bomb all of humanity away and aliens might come to this planet that share whole different cultures with 100 genders, and still the same fucking scientific natural laws will still be in existence.
As for the shape, we actually have footage and films from space, go look.
As for the drag queens, personally think they look fabulous, I wish I had the same talent in applying my make-up. Most of the ones I met were super nice btw and that's what counts. None of my two kids, one girl one boy, that also got a lot of sexual education by school and me personally, think they are in any way pushed to walk around like that if they don't want to. However they learned about the diversity on this earth and that all humans deserve respect, no matter how they look and what the identify as.
They gave no proof the earth is a globe. There is no proof the earth is a sphere. All the pictures from NASA are CGI and they admit it. There is no curvature at 120,000 feet unless you use a fish eye lens. NASA's formula for the curvature of the earth is 8 inches squared per mile. Check it out. Nothing falls below this curve they suggest. Objects disappearing on the ocean is due to atmospheric conditions and our eyes angular resolution. Get a Nikon P1000 and you will see boats that have "dissapeared". I thought flat earthers were crazy too until I did some research and used my common senses.
In this video Neil says a debate could be won by someone being charming. This is beyond understandable...perhaps in Hollywood but in the real world of intellectuals, educated peoples, doesn't fly. He refuses to debate a flat earther. It truly begs the question, why? Why, if he is so sure, and knowledgeable.with all.of the facts proving a globe?
Do you know how fast the earth is spinning around the sun? And the moon around the earth? Do you know how fast the sun is orbiting the Milky Way Galaxy?
How far away is the Sun from the earth? The moon from the earth? Polaris? And did you know that our whole little solar system is flying through space at nearly 500,000 mph? Do some research and see if it makes sense to you? Ask yourself, how can, how do they measure these speeds? And there is so much more to discover, uncover.....

Well, while some of us are trying to understand repeating fast radio burst (FRB) signals and magnetron neutron stars in other galaxies, gamma ray bursts, super nova explosions, black holes, non-regular redshifts of the Fraunhofer lines in the spectrum of distant binary stars etc, some people have a hard time to understand that the earth is a globe.....

No one who is skeptical of the globe earth model are that way as a result of not understanding it. The problem is that the spherical model of the Earth is just a theory and people who do believe in it are following a religion, one the skeptics refuse now to blindly have faith in.
