- So many tears and I told you so’s after pro surfing’s most endearing icons, Carissa Moore and Stephanie Gilmore, quit the tour within three days of each other.
Carissa, who is thirty-one, said she wanted to see what life looked like "outside the jersey."
Stephanie Gilmore followed the five-time champ Carissa Moore into the sunset telling her almost one-million Instagram fans that she'd be back in 2025, although no one believes she'll be tour surfing in her thirty-eighth year.
Carissa surfs her last WSL event Pipe but will defend her Olympic title at Teahupoo in July.
And while all that was going on, Lisa Andersen was quietly exited from Roxy with the reclusive world champ Martin Potter breaking his five-year silence to slam the decision.
Said Pottz, “I saw this coming years ago, why do you think I disappeared from something we helped build. Surfing or should I say pro surfing is dead. So sad.”
Between 1996 and 2006, Lisa Andersen’s golden years, Roxy grew from 20 mill to 650 mill in sales.
Now, Chas Smith very angry.
WSL is completely unbearable to watch. When Pottz stopped commentating, there was nothing worth watching anymore. Bobby Martinez was right back in the day when he said they tried to do an ATP thing and that it was ridiculous.

The WSL needs to get away from the stupid final 5 competition that decides the world champ. The best surfer throughout the whole year should be the champion.
Carissa has been fucked over for two world titles by the final5. If i were her i would not compete for a whole year just waiting for the stress/embrassament of having tiltes taken off you because of a could of heats at trestles!!!

Very nice and right on point ! I think we may see more noteworthy pros take the same action and dip out until the WSL gets its shirt figured out or crumbles altogether.... I believe there will always be a pro tour of some kind, because the popularity and growth of surfing has gotten too big for a major company (or companies) to ignore the profit potential. I just wish that someone could get it *right*. Maybe the Da Hui guys ? I love the way they structure the Backdoor shootout and the whole vibe behind it.
The issue isn't whether companies can profit but whether they can grow the profits to return ever-more "shareholder value." The answer is, "No" so they're cutting what they pay the surfers.

Also I don’t ever think of Caroline Marks as a world champ. It doesn’t hold any weight or occur to me. Just feels like she won a comp one day and everyone moved on with their lives. I think this played out the Stab Surfer Poll…no one cares. Felipe I still think of as the champ as he did win those seasons fair and square, but I would admittedly like him to act like a world champ and charge/the tour be skewed towards those that do charge.
Steph is obviously a champ but much like Caroline, that year she won at Trestles was no doubt an interesting day of competitive surfing, but that’s it. I don’t think of that as a world title and had moved on within a few days of it happening.
Crazy how much the WSL just doesn’t wanna see the reality that is so obvious to most of obvious and doesn’t want to give the consumer/fan what they want and what makes sense.
No one will remember Caroline’s title in a few years and that’s sad for all parties involved

I think you mean 7 time world champ, but I take your point. Props to Caroline for pulling through on the day and her backhand attack all year. But I don’t think in the back of anyone’s mind the think ‘Caroline Mark, World Champ’. Not in the way that we automatically do when thinking of Gabe, Steph, Carissa, Mick or even single title holders like Joel or Italo. My brain subconsciously thinks ‘world champ’ for the aforementioned, not for Carolin unfortunately
They probably want to focus on starting a family. Carissa is 31. Stephanie is 35. They have both experienced tremendous success, probably both financially secure. So its a no-brainer they both probably want to have children.

Soon only JJF will be paid to surf I think surfing kinda like motocross and all sports (really) are shrinking and everyone is just trying to get something from the dismantling of their particular sport economic structure. Though it is a good thing surf, and all sports need to get back to the core those of us who love it. We don't get paid we PAY and a lot sometimes to do our loves. Steph feels guilty that she stole Riss’ title with 5th place points. When you get something you didn’t earn it weighs your down. Riss left cause she got robbed by the communism in sports; her years worth of earnings were redistributed.

Easiest way to put is Stock market + surfing. Never gunna work. Nor should it in the pure sense. Lets hope surfing prevails and becomes boring.
The tour is also taylor made for Toledo who doesn't even know how to get barrel

No one fuckkkking carrrressss. I used to be the most obsessive WSL and competitive surfing fan. Now I don’t care at all, I barely even watch surfing in general it’s made me so apathetic
