"Power does not come to those who are born the strongest or smartest or bravest. It comes to those who are willing to do anything for power !" Rollo is the perfect example of this. Love him or hate him, he turned out to be the most successful Viking in history.
Rollo as Duke of Normandy was basically the commander of the strongest army and military force in northern Europe at that time, and he loved fighting so much that when he got too old to fight on the front lines with his men he would get his servants to throw all the pots and pans over a cliff so he can hear the sound of battle just for a few moments. Basically in a feudal system few people had the balls to challenge Duke Rollo and his forces in open field which is why the King married him to his daughter in the first place, to secure his Kingdom, he was an extremely capable and almost invincible warrior in real life, people would not even contemplate invading an area Under the Duke of Normandy's Protection, if you did it would be the smack down of your life. Duke Rollo also had multiple major cities on his lands in Normandy and also had many more protectorate kingdoms and Lords who paid him money to insure their protection with alliances etc, Duke Rollo was easily 500 times more wealthy than everyone in that hall including King Harold without any form of exaggeration, could even be more than a thousand times more, I don't think people actually appreciate how powerful and wealthy Rollo was in Vikings, he was wealthier than most Kings in Europe because a lot of them paid him to protect and make an alliance with him for protection and gave him lands and trade to keep him sweet.
He thought by pushing lagartha and bjorn out then it would push them to come to Paris with him and they would have nothing to cling to in the end by staying, also, he figured in the end, that he would have them by his side in Paris while being able to have trade still with ivar and king Harald.. so in the end it was a good plan just back fired when they refused to come with him to Paris..
Of course, i don't discuss this but, since his place now is normandy, i don't think he should involve himself in the war between ragnar' sons. He has his people and his family to look after.
@@johnjungkook2721 yes i know this, but forgive me(perhaps it is a problem of mine, i don't deny it and i apologize for it), i don't see the plot logic (aside from what you meant, such as it's a TV show and he was a loved character) of him returning to kattegat: what does it bring to normandy, the country where he has his family and his people and he is responsible of? I'm not very much a fan of Rollo. But I do like him because he got what he wanted - Recognition and a beautiful princess as a wife. Despite being at odds with his brother, he still cared for his family, Ragnar's sons especially Bjorn. He accompanied them on their cruise to Iberia (Spain).
This was hilarious. You can see the frustration and resignation on Ivar's face as he realizes he struck a deal with the devil. Rollo doesn't even have to be subtle about it 😂

At first, I loved Ragnar and disliked, sometimes very much disliked Rollo. Then, I became to love Ragnar, and also love Rollo. "Don't worry you will, we will strike a trade deal, which will be extremely favorable to me." Just beautiful. He helps them win; then basically tells them exactly why he help them win. The brilliant Ivar didn't even see that one coming.
I completely disagree with you. I really appreciate every single scene, the amazing environments they managed to create, castles, norse longhouses. It is just a treat for my eyes.
i never understood this storyline. why would rollo fight against lagertha nd bjorn 2 people he was very close with and cared for dearly while as for ivar and hvisterk he barely knows them and sees ivar is crazy. that really made me hate rollo
He said it in this vid, he wanted Kattegat as an allie for trade and mutual defense pact.. He could not do that deal with Lagertha and Björn because both hated him for betraying Ragnar (and they both blamed him for the fall of Ragnar)
Because they were weaker and it makes political sense to support the more powerful of the two and thus secure advantage (in this case lopsided trade agreements and troop support). He also wants to isolate Bjorn and Lagertha because Bjorn is "his son" and wants to give him no recourse but to join him in Frankia with Lagartha (or die at the hands of Ivar). On another side Lagertha and Bjorn probably wouldnt give him the same deal he could get out of Harold and Ivar.
He wanted to make them return to Normandy with him. He also knew that if he made an alliance with Harald and Ivar he would have a lot of cash flowing his way and influence in Norway. Don't know how but Ivar and Harald became as popular as Lagertha and Bjorn in just a year.
"Perhaps you have ambitions to rule the old place?" "Why would I want the further burden of garrisoning Kattegat?" Both are true. Rollo wants to dominate Kattagat through trade and funnel a large portion of its wealth back to himself. His intention is to turn it into a vassal, ruling it in all but name, and at the same time establishing to Ivar's whole kingdom that if Ivar doesn't pay what he owes, then Rollo has a good legal basis to raid or conquer if a trade deal gets broken, and Ivar's vassals would have fair reason to ignore Ivar's need for soldiers and weapons in such a scenario.
@Cloaked Shaman Seeing his character wasn't the problem. Showing him as the backstabbing, opportunist was as he was portrayed. Wasting everyone's time with he may be Bjorn's father was stupid. I really hope he doesn't come back but since the writers ran out of storyline in season 4, he will probably return to invoke a huge yawn.
If I were Ragnar I will never trust Rollo cuz he always return for betray his friends and his family in the end he just become more greedy he'll do anything that would give him Benifit
This storyline of Rollo could've been seen in much more positive light and less annoyingly dramatic, if only he wasn't Ragnar's brother, and instead was a random Viking who grows from zero to one of the most terrifying warriors of his time and being the Duke of Normandy, marrying the princess and creating the house of Normandy which eventually...(you know, like tha actual history😒) if that was the case, not only his relationship and rivalry with Ragnar would've been much healthier, but that whole French alliance wouldn't be considered such a betrayal either and Ragnar and all Vikings definitely perfectly knew one or two things about ambition to not disown him forever for it. he could be a more Ecbert like figure for Ragnar, aka a frenemy which you both hate and admire in some way. or Harald like figure for Bjorn, with whole jealousy thing and ultimately, he could have a much more respectable farewell with rest of the characters than what he had instead in this show. why exactly that whole Cain and Abel nonsense was necessary for this show?😑😑😑
If he did what he could to help Ivar he secures a trade deal that is beneficial to him, if Björn and Lagetha gets away and wins they will also give him a trade deal that is beneficial to him.
