As someone who has seen that. You see everything confusing . Then You look again and there are more of them. Then another look now there are only them. Thats how You know You are Losing.
remember that a large number of the English forces were Mercians and wessex destroyed mercia's army in earlier seasons so the mercian soldiers we see here are probably peasants that dont even know how to fight properly
(sorry for my english im french) Ecberth give a true formation training for every soldier in Wessex and Mercia after he became King of both. Actually the saxons soldiers of Mercia/Wessex are almost as strong as the Vikings They were slaughtered here for several reasons. -they were outnumbered --They had already suffered losses because of the vikings archers -They were disorganized -and tired (the Vikings too but less than them)
Wrong because Vikings were full time raiders and fighters and the Anglo Saxon fyrd were only peasants called to arms. The only decent Anglo Saxon is the huscarl that was the kings bodyguard that fought ferociously and were fully professional soldiers.
About the Vikings ? Yeah you are right the fact they live in a clanic society give him a truly advantage in terms of battle experiences and fight skills. about the Saxons ?You are wrong .Although some kingdom (like northumbria) have no permanent army but only local garrisons moderately train and mass call of peasants for war ,Is not the case of Wessex and Mercia (the two most powerful kingdom saxons) They have permanent army powerful and train (provided by the ealdorman) historically the Wessex is the only kingdom to have permanently push back the Danes
3:21 for the entire series we see aethelwulf act like the Vikings are no big deal and it's at this moment he really realizes the gravity of the situation and the emotion he puts in to save yourself really sells it
They had to make Bjorn appear wise for the brief second. He's all to quick to think the fighting is over when he accepts the same empty promise his father was given, by the same man (Ecbert).
What an amazing scene. Aethelwulf destroying those vikings makes it amazing to watch. I hope they carry this series on until Alfred the Great makes an appearance. That would be amazing.
Athewulf died about six years prior to the Great Heathen Army turning up. He fought one major engagement against the Danes prior, and beat the shite out of them. But apparently the writers for Vikings decided none of that matters.
man if i was in the first line i would be pishing and shitting myself at the same time but fucking loving it because of the adrenaline, what a rush it would be to just charge in battle and being face to face with death. i love scenes like this
I really hope the final for Vikings can relive this fight moment. Since season 5 and season 6 so far haven't been up there. The big fight scenes in those always get interrupted with flashbacks and talking. Takes the tension away.
That’s not true Vikings absolutely destroyed Wessex many times and also The Vikings had way less people in there defence of there defeat however if it was balanced the Vikings would easily kill All the Wessex soilders
It was Alfred who was the best at keeping the Vikings at bay. He paid them off, signed peace agreements, fought them, etc. Alfred is the only reason Wessex didn’t become part of Danelaw.
@@Paddym3lt true however the Vikings did briefly gain control of Wessex and Mercia after the battle of Chippenham where they defeated Alfred's forces and drove him out of Wessex
@DarkKing009 That statement is actually partially correct. Aethelwulf did better than any other king of Britannia who was ruling at the time. The battle of Alcea in 851 was the largest Saxon victories there had been before Alfred showed up.
Why is this more realistic than any other sword on sword battles i've ever seen. How fast they move and how quickly this is all taking place it's more realistic than most other shows because it shows the fast paces environment of this type of warfare. Usually it's slowed down ig for the viewer experience but this feels much more realistic as to how it would have been on the battlefield. Every man out there would have had adrenaline pumping, they're literally fighting for their life. Carnage. Mayhem. It's insane how real it feels to me.
Not realistic in the slightest, it's just another hollywood fight with every soldier fighting individual duels instead of formation fighting, none of the armor is correct, and chariots weren't used by that period
Man, they all are beasts in its own right but Bjorn is just like a goddamn terminator. He's dropping them with such force I can feel each blow. And with no expression on his face whatsoever.
This show looks awesome, but my one issue with it is that it seems like half the people there are dressed in period armour, and the rest of them are clad in equipment that’s still got about 800 years before it’s invented.
I dunno, vikings usually advanced under the shield wall and broke it when close enough, but then again they have a woman in the line aswell so i dont take this hollywood thing seriously.
@@pc.principal5297 LOL i knew you kind of guys would crawl out when i said that, most of those Shieldmaidens are from sagas and pointed out to be Odin's messengers/soulsuckers and they have yet to actually prove with hard evidence that women actually stood with the men as regular soldiers in viking armies on a field of battle.
Not only am I dippin out of there. But I’m looking at my king the whole time running like you sorry fool. You fell right into their hands and they saw right through you.
Can the mercian soldiers (yellow ones) actually fight? I mean, I see some Wessex soldiers taking out some vikings in the background aside of Aethelwulf, or at least offering a fair fight. Mercian soldiers just die :/
The vikings dont even have helmets are wearing tunics(?) with leather vests :DDD they have like 1/3 of theyre army consisting of women while wessex army is all/mostly professional soldiers with gambesons/some weird scale armor i guess also why is no one wearing mail and also why are not even the kings or warlords of the vikings not wearing any kind of armor or HELMETS also bjorn is literally surrounded by enemies without a shield or any kind of armor and they dont even try to fight back (these are supposed to be trained soldiers and even a peasent knows how to stick someone propaply one of the most unrealistic battle scene ive ever seen dont get me wrong tho i like the show its just really unrealistic
also cavalry charges straight towards the enemy army from the front before infantry makes contact also a lot of them had spears (Should have been more spears were definitely the most common weapon at the time) literally even the stupidest military commanders wouldnt do that expect maybe if it was knights vs peasents really ridiculous still a decent show tho
@Anatoly Dyatlov even then watching it doesn't feel very satisfying, it's just the main characters plowing through Saxons, it doesn't feel earned, I find battle scenes where men of both sides are being slain to be far more enjoyable instead of what is basically video game power fantasy action sequences
The fact that ragnars sons were able to take over all of england just shows how mich power they had while working together, and the potential that got lost when they fell out
Just like real life. The Great Heathen Army essentially captured England. Alfred the Great was forced to enact a peace pact called Danelaw and allowed the Vikings to live peacefully among them. Most of the leaders separated. Some went to Ireland and Scotland. Others back home and France. If they stayed together they could’ve conquered England.

Hvitserk is one of the protagonists in Season 5
in History he actually had a great saga and became a great leader
He was very unlikeable... Painted him badly, the actor had no energy like the rest...he seemed very unenthusiatic when needed. Unlike the rest that acted like brutes. Sigurd left the show as he entered, without a Fuss..
SerDankalot96 Exactly. Most likely because he was killed off way too early. The other brothers at that time weren’t interesting either. The only one that stood out was Ivar because of his journey with Ragnar.
Must’ve been crazy to fight in a battle like that and halfway through you realise you’re on the losing side
As someone who has seen that. You see everything confusing . Then You look again and there are more of them. Then another look now there are only them. Thats how You know You are Losing.
The end scene illustrated why Bjorn is still the true heir of Ragnar.
Frosty, yes.. very agree.. Bjorn should be the next King to replace Ragnar.. not Ivar
Redcrosse Knight Ivar is gonna make a shit king (series wise)
John Cena He’s not dumb like Rollo, he’s just less crafty than Ragnar
True heir my ass, look at him now, losing his throne, losing his mum he lose everything because his dumb decision
I wonder whether there is anybody that could kill even a viking except for Aethelwulf? Their army was big but entirely a failure
remember that a large number of the English forces were Mercians and wessex destroyed mercia's army in earlier seasons so the mercian soldiers we see here are probably peasants that dont even know how to fight properly
damn levies
(sorry for my english im french)
Ecberth give a true formation training for every soldier in Wessex and Mercia after he became King of both.
Actually the saxons soldiers of Mercia/Wessex are almost as strong as the Vikings
They were slaughtered here for several reasons.
-they were outnumbered
--They had already suffered losses because of the vikings archers
-They were disorganized
-and tired (the Vikings too but less than them)
Wrong because Vikings were full time raiders and fighters and the Anglo Saxon fyrd were only peasants called to arms. The only decent Anglo Saxon is the huscarl that was the kings bodyguard that fought ferociously and were fully professional soldiers.
About the Vikings ? Yeah you are right the fact they live in a clanic society give him a truly advantage in terms of battle experiences and fight skills.
about the Saxons ?You are wrong .Although some kingdom (like northumbria) have no permanent army but only local garrisons moderately train and mass call of peasants for war ,Is not the case of Wessex and Mercia (the two most powerful kingdom saxons)
They have permanent army powerful and train (provided by the ealdorman) historically the Wessex is the only kingdom to have permanently push back the Danes
Aethelwulf could see his army getting defeated and knew not gonna end well opted to retreat save his men , one of my favorite characters In the series
Anyone else think Ubbe has the best war cry in the show? It’s downright terrifying.
3:21 for the entire series we see aethelwulf act like the Vikings are no big deal and it's at this moment he really realizes the gravity of the situation and the emotion he puts in to save yourself really sells it
3:54 that tumble by that extra was definitely not scripted 😂
Bjorn such a buzzkill "It's not over yet" sure it isn't... but you crushed the army of Wessex, is that not something to celebrate
They had to make Bjorn appear wise for the brief second. He's all to quick to think the fighting is over when he accepts the same empty promise his father was given, by the same man (Ecbert).
He said it not over cause the other king was still alive.i think he hade rage in is heart cause he love her father too much.
@@sylvamoise5788 Still, he's been sent home in shame, rub the victory in
I love how Ubbe taunts the soldier before killing him at 1:45
he asked the Soldiers that are you really a soldier..
1:45 UBBE, WHAT A BEAST
3:13 "Hey can you hold this for me"
"Thanks".
What an amazing scene. Aethelwulf destroying those vikings makes it amazing to watch. I hope they carry this series on until Alfred the Great makes an appearance. That would be amazing.
Dappa Dan he's been appearing since season 3
He killed a few vikings while thousands of english soldiers got slaughtered!
Patrik
Thousands??? I don’t even think there was that many total people present in this battle
Hazardous 088 agreed.
Easily my favorite medieval battle of all time that I've seen in media. The raw brutality of this fight is second to none that I know.
The battle from Netflix The king is better imo
Try watch battle of Agincourt (the king) , the battle of the bastards(game of throne) , and the battle of loudoun hill (Outlaw king)
it's the most goriest, the most epic would be the amphibious landing in Robin Hood (2010)
@@fishnujish1511 nah that one was garbage watch the king and outlaw king
cool to see the brutality, but very far away of how vikings fought their battles...
Athewulf, soo much badass,he will retake vessex!
Nikola Prcic wessex
Athewulf died about six years prior to the Great Heathen Army turning up. He fought one major engagement against the Danes prior, and beat the shite out of them. But apparently the writers for Vikings decided none of that matters.

The Guy She Told You Not To Worry About Vs You
Nobody fought harder than Aethelwulf or deserved a better ending than him. The real life Aethelwulf was a stone-cold badass too.
I really hope the final for Vikings can relive this fight moment. Since season 5 and season 6 so far haven't been up there. The big fight scenes in those always get interrupted with flashbacks and talking. Takes the tension away.
4:36 the little kiss on Ívars head 😂
Aethelwulf Wessex in real-life beat back all the Vikings raids
If by beat back, you mean paid off then sure.
@DarkKing009
That statement is actually partially correct. Aethelwulf did better than any other king of Britannia who was ruling at the time. The battle of Alcea in 851 was the largest Saxon victories there had been before Alfred showed up.

Just imagine if the brothers stayed together, they would of have conquered the whole world🔥
Naw
Yep, and you wouldn't be alive right now.
@@yunglorn eh
Did you notice at 2:05 Bjorn slashed a Mercian soldier in the face like they did to Thorunn
Man clips of these shows just makes me wanna play the total war games again.
Man, they all are beasts in its own right but Bjorn is just like a goddamn terminator. He's dropping them with such force I can feel each blow. And with no expression on his face whatsoever.
Just imagine if the Brothers did not end in a civil war. They cut have ruled the world together.
Well you can thank Lagertha's dumbass for that.
@@sarahalzubaidi7794 but in reality they rule the world together.
0:04 The best part
Remember season 1? When they made a shield wall and actually stayed in formation.. good times.
yh i was thinking that actually why charge why not just stay in the shield wall and wait
@@olliered9924 Hollywood. Mass chaos with your heroes fighting 1v1.. or 1v3 is apparently what people want to see
This show looks awesome, but my one issue with it is that it seems like half the people there are dressed in period armour, and the rest of them are clad in equipment that’s still got about 800 years before it’s invented.
Aethelwulf fought valiantly, worthy of recognition in the archives of the saxons army
M I R seems aethelwulf and his sons were the only ones who could kill the damned Vikings
Krzysztof Hejek
True Viking slayers they were
Hazardous 088 agreed good sir
What was the point of having a shield wall formation just break it off after
I dunno, vikings usually advanced under the shield wall and broke it when close enough, but then again they have a woman in the line aswell so i dont take this hollywood thing seriously.

Why didn't they bother to use historical advisors for this TV series. The clothing and weaponry is more like Game of Thrones than anything historical.
Guess what! I've got a fever and the only prescription is more -cowbell- HUSCARLS !!
Last Kingdom is actually a level above Viking in term of equipment
Already Ragnar and Rollo were never brothers, and in reality Bjorn was Aslaug's son, so do yourself a favour forget about historical accuracy
Yeah. Most West Saxon retinue should be wearing Chainmail and the Fyrd just random weapons
Jason Fryer well, reality is kinda lame. these armors are more aethetically pleasing
What would go through your mind if you hear your general saying "Save yourselves!"
Hopefully not a northmans axe.

3:13 the best part. Just a throw And kill
- Sir, these warriors have no helmets, so stupid.
- It's plot armor, we are doomed!
Can the mercian soldiers (yellow ones) actually fight? I mean, I see some Wessex soldiers taking out some vikings in the background aside of Aethelwulf, or at least offering a fair fight. Mercian soldiers just die :/
I think at 3:51 there is a Mercian soldier killing a wounded viking, at least they managed 1 kill...
Aethelwulf was such a badass
The sheer brutality is just awesome to watch
3:12 “YEET.”
Are we all forgetting that this prince saved a queen single handly from a tower guarded by Mercian soldiers he is a warrior

Everytime i watch scenes like this from Vikings... I instantly wanna go play some For Honor
Vikings plot armor is strong in this one
Actually for once, they earned their victory in this battle because of the numbers and strategy. But in every previous one, you'd be right.
The same with the Mongol empire, when the great Khan died, most of his subjects ended up destroying each other.
In victory Sigurd showed some love to Ivar
Bjorn’s like “it’s halftime, chill”
love how after 3 seasons they just said "whats a shield wall?"
