@@mijanhoque1740 Those who forged the kingdoms yes, for the most part. Their sons and heirs were a very mixed bag. Most would also be leading from the rear in the battle, as it's just smart. The king dies or is captured the battle/war is over most of the time. Most Warrior Kings lead an elite bodyguard who were primarily used to end the battle, not be worn down in the fighting which could take hours or even days.
It's why those who did lead from the front and survive created such legends. Vikings lived for the saga and legends to be remembered after they died, so were in general the exception to the rule. Especially when their religion encouraged them to die in battle to enter Valhalla (more complicated than just that though, not getting into that debate though.)
Long story short, your percentage is way off.

We all know that Aethelwolf was one of the greatest warriors in England. As we all cheered for the Vikings, their different sons, and Ragnar's legacy, let us not forget about the days of Vikings vs England. Aethelwolf had courage, strength, and the will to protect his nation and father. And that's why we all respected him throughout the show.
As the sequel show 'Vikings: Valhalla' had a line stating "what has happened to England? there used to be warriors here." A great reference to the warriors of England. Aethelwolf, King Alfred, Bishop Heahmund and more.

Bjorn also had a way better legacy irl then portrayed in the show. Ivar was. The oldest, the tallest and the most revered, plus no evidence he was a full. Cripple like Ivar. Either boneless means fear by thee British (for all the Christian’s he tortured to death) impotent, too tall to walk normally, or Brittle bone syndrome. Travis Webb first of all I'm getting my PHD in Norse history.
Second of all even after all the blood shed he still beat a old unarmed man to a pool of blood.
Third of all i never said Ragnar was a real hero I just said that he is much more true to his cause then the saxons where to theirs.
And Ragnar never wanted to slice the ears and nose of his wife which had nothing to do with the bloodshed at the time.
Ragnar never whipped him self like a mad man.
Ragnar never went back on a deal with the saxons (until they went back on a deal with him)
And just because Wulf was a Christian it doesn't mean that he is a good person in fact Christians never became the known good people until they stopped ruling with Christian law.
So don't you tell me that a madman who doesn't think twice about massacring a village full of women children and elderly men and doesn't object to his wife being branded in public for something that he himself has committed the same man that laughed In the face of a cripple because his men are beating his 90+ year old father is a hero just because he tends to follow the same fate that you do.

Actually the saxons soldiers of Mercia/Wessex are almost as strong as the Vikings
They were slaughtered here for several reasons.
      -they were outnumbered
--They had already suffered losses because of the vikings archers
      -They were disorganized

They have permanent army powerful and train (provided by the ealdorman) historically the Wessex is the only kingdom to have permanently push back the Danes

Why is this more realistic than any other sword on sword battles i've ever seen. How fast they move and how quickly this is all taking place it's more realistic than most other shows because it shows the fast paces environment of this type of warfare. Usually it's slowed down ig for the viewer experience but this feels much more realistic as to how it would have been on the battlefield. Every man out there would have had adrenaline pumping, they're literally fighting for their life. Carnage. Mayhem. It's insane how real it feels to me.

I don't know what's more groan-worthy, the Wessex army wearing helmets from half a millenium later or the Vikings not wearing any helmets at all.

Actually for once, they earned their victory in this battle because of the numbers and strategy. But in every previous one, you'd be right.

@Anatoly Dyatlov even then watching it doesn't feel very satisfying, it's just the main characters plowing through Saxons, it doesn't feel earned, I find battle scenes where men of both sides are being slain to be far more enjoyable instead of what is basically video game power fantasy action sequences

The fact that ragnars sons were able to take over all of england just shows how mich power they had while working together, and the potential that got lost when they fell out

Just like real life. The Great Heathen Army essentially captured England. Alfred the Great was forced to enact a peace pact called Danelaw and allowed the Vikings to live peacefully among them. Most of the leaders separated. Some went to Ireland and Scotland. Others back home and France. If they stayed together they could’ve conquered England.

The same with the Mongol empire, when the great Khan died, most of his subjects ended up destroying each other.
