    Wow thanks a lot! Just a tip for anyone who might be scrolling through the comments, if you step forward with the same leg as the arm you're punching with, you can follow it up with a front snap kick! (You can do opposite leg as well, if you want to kick with the same leg as you are punching with.) Thanks a lot!

      +Simon Scher Hey Simon Great video but Just to let you know other forms of combat do encourage the three pinky finger punch. Look up jack dempseys punching tutorial or wing chuns punches. The knuckles you hit with depend on a lot of different things.

    • @SimonScher
      @SimonScher  9 лет назад +3

      I know that some styles do use the other knuckles, but this tutorial is on power punches, jabs and crosses. And for those it is unwise to use the others. There are always exceptions to every rule as circumstance dictates. But generally if you are punching really hard you want to avoid those smaller knuckles as breakage can happen much more easily, as well as wrist bending and breaking. If you are doing speed taps to softer tissue, then yes they might be viable. Thanks so much for your feedback. I appreciate it.

    This video made me realize why so many Taekwondo fighters get hit in the head so much in MMA. Head straight up, no shoulder rolling, no chin ducking, everything just looks rigid and stiff and too upright. Im assuming that because of the squared up stance form in the 3:40 section? Seems very counter productive to actual combat.

      @RAWSNL , I'm afraid you're confusing WTF Taekwondo with ITF Taekwondo. In ITF, there are punches to the head.

    • @josh-lt9sb

      Most likely not, they leave you wide open for the most part, the only time I could really see them working is if your opponent is caught off guard.

  • @MichaelK30000
    @MichaelK30000 7 лет назад

    Hello Simon and thank you for your videos. I watch them one by one and find them very useful. And there is one thing I'd like to ask about. Although I can easily do push-ups on my 2 big knuckles, it;s difficult for me to use them in sparrings because to strike with exactly 2 big knuckles I have to bend my wrist down and to the right/left. For example, I simply fail to understand how I can punch my opponent to the chest with a horizontal fist using 2 big knuckles without bending my wrist. But I can easily do that with a diagonal fist using 3 knuckles. Well, I might well be wrong, but to me using the 3 knuckles feels much more natural - I mean I know that my wrist is in a natural straight position and won't be injured. I remember when I was a child I saw on TV (Russian TV, I'm from Russia) a guy breaking his wrist while breaking a board with a straight punch - he bent his wrist too much and it broke.

    • @SimonScher
      @SimonScher  7 лет назад

      In the video I demo how the top and inside line of the wrist need to be straight. That should put the first two knuckl a in the fore. But if for you that doesn’t happen I am not sure what to say. I could look at a pic or vid of your fist if you want a suggestion. Friend me on FB if you want. If it’s only a problem of application it should work with a straight punch. And a tight angle punch. Arching hooks and haymakers nigh need a variety of knuckle and hand angles.

    • @MichaelK30000
      @MichaelK30000 7 лет назад

      Simon, first of all thank you for your reply. Right now I don't have a camera so it's a bit difficult for me to make a video. But I've managed to find a video where (at 1:34) you can clearly what I mean by bending the wrist when punching with 2 knuckles with a horizontal fist.

    Wing chun disagrees : pinky and ring knuckle can exert force too ?

    • @SimonScher
      @SimonScher  8 лет назад +2

      +Pham Binh Minh Yes those two knuckles can hit, but the Metacarpals under those knuckles cannot withstand as much pressure as the other two. If you are going for a series of punches that are not full power to a fleshier target they can be used but for full power knock out punches they will more likely break on impact. Those knuckles can also cause you wrist two buckle after impact, leading to injury.

    Rotating the wrist when punching is about keeping the bones of the forearm in line and adding rotational force to the strike. "Twisting the skin" is really not something that should happen if you're punching correctly.

    • @SimonScher

      In general yes. But ITF allowed head punches so they are used more than in WTF but less than boxing and karate. Kicks proffer more power and a greater reach so we use them more.

    • @SimonScher

      I would have to agree. The problem is the WTF's tournament focus and no head punching rule. It is the age old debate between sport and art. I prefer art, but WTF is more about sport. It is really about what each person is looking for.

    • @patrickconnors4602

      I thought the same. I grew up boxing. Never boxed pro but had an amateur record of 86-8-1. I moved onto an mma gym just for fitness. We have great kickboxers there and I think you guys would fuck up a TKD fighter pretty easily. As far as boxing goes, unless TKD is willing to adapt their punches, it wouldn't do them any good in a fight against a trained fighter. Their kicks are fantastic, but you wouldnt get the distance to exhibit it. A kick boxer would absolutely shatter a knee out of its joint, or break a leg. Taking nothing from TKD, it's a beautiful art, but as far as being useful in a real fight, or a an mma fight it would be severely lacking in capabilities compared to kickboxing, karate, jjs, boxing, wrestling etc.

    • @SimonScher
      @SimonScher  6 лет назад +9

      Pulling back to the waist is a good way to train the torso to perform the reactionary force/pull back for the punch. IF you just start with Jab/Cross... you won't be able to get the hips and torso and legs trained to their fullest. If you start at the hip and move it up as you become proficient then your punches will be more able to incorporate your legs and torso and weight shifting. Thank you for sharing your input.
