A year and a half ago the painter at my job was out on vacation and we had a job that absolutely had to go that Friday. I told my boss I can paint it, I've been watching how to paint videos on RUclips. He scoffed at me and said oh this is gonna be good. I did such a good job on that hood bumper Fender blend that he asked me if I wanted to come in Saturday hey and do a full paint job on a Bronco that the painter had been dreading and I agreed ...that Bronco left that Tuesday without being polished . A few months later I replaced the painter. You gave me the confidence to step my game up and it changed my life . Thank you for that.

I've watched Brian many times in the past 4 years. I can say that he has taught me not just the paint knowledge, but the intense work and craftsmanship that goes into every job. If there's anything I am greatly thankful for its for Brian teaching us the craft and showing us the way through his journey in the auto body industry. I wanted to get into the body shop business as a painter but no one will even look at me without a Tech school education or experience.

I've said I was done for the last 2 years after getting burned out painting cars from hurricane Ian. Fast forward to 3 weeks ago and the dealership I painted at closed the body shop. The job market where I live is non-existent right now. Moral of the story is you never know how good you have it until it's gone.

This is as accurate as it gets! I’ve been there many times, and it takes a lot of willpower to persevere through it. Just remember no matter how bad a job comes out, no matter what you have to do to make a job right…you’ve learned and you’re that much better than you were before. Many of the jobs that I have messed up have been on my own cars; when that happens there’s no one to blame but yourself. I’ve spent thousands of hours blocking a car out to perfectly straight only to have the foundation fail a few years later😩😣! You know what though… taking that entire area back to bare metal, treating the rust that developed underneath(creating the bubbles that caused the failure) and doing the entire process over..went much faster than it did the first time-you know why?? Because I’m better now than I was then! DONT QUIT❤
Just learned how to blend clear, thanks! there are not a lot of videos showing how to use melt in blender. I've painted at least 5 cars and every single one I have to redo something, but I have learned so much with professional results, thanks to people like you sharing your knowledge.

There was a lot of knowledge packed into this video, thanks for sharing it with all of us. I've definitely had my fair share of frustrating moments in the booth but it makes it all worth it in the end. I had a similar start, I don't have any certifications or trainings, just a lot of long nights lol. I always tell our newer guys when they start that the only reason I've gotten proficient with cutting and buffing was because I had a humbling start as a painter, and I still get humbled because I'm not perfect and that's perfectly fine. I did a lot of painting of 500 gal. Totes in the 90s using enamel, I have been planning on painting my Cobra kit car for 2 yrs. But im not to that point yet , but on july 1st of this year I wrecked my work truck so i put the new hood and grill on it and painted it, it turned out great and I credit that to you Brian, I have ben watching your videos for 2 yrs and learned a lot from you about painting basecoat clearcoat which i had never done, so thank you very much!
Brian you definitely inspire and educate at the same time....I myself have been doing this for 50 years and I absolutely love what I do but every now and then I have one that drives me crazy and want to call it quits but as a,professional I know how to redo and fix those classic goof ups that happens....and another day it will be better because it just paint don't overthink it !! First 15 seconds really had set the mood for today, 21 years old and been doing this for almost 2 years and it’s something I sometimes struggle with; the anxiety of the job turning out shit because I did something wrong in the process. But eanytime it’s time to work on a new car, it’s always a new opportunity. Man Brian I really appreciate all your videos but this one in particular because it's all TRUTH here man. I sprayed for three years at a friend's shop. His painter walked out one day in the middle of an "off frame restoration" of a 65' C-10 short bed. Red with white center line outlined with brushed aluminum trim that covered the paint lines. Anyway I had never painted anything since my Schwinn bicycle when I was 9. But he showed me how to mix paint (completely wrong) and let me cut loose on this truck. Two and a half years later the gentleman that paid almost 15 grand for that paint wanted me to paint two more of his trucks. A respray of clear on a daily driver and another restoration, a 55' I believe, stuff happened nothing bad on my part but I ended up not taking the jobs along with 4 other jobs coming my way out of the surrounding business owners near my friends shop. It's a long story of course but I had had enough, but I still watch your videos and may rethink it. Supposed to start CDL training on Oct. 21st so time will have to tell. Either way once I land on my feet I will be restoring vehicles, its a lot of fun in the end.
Hello Brian...great video friend... usually I don't have problems with my paint jobs...The big problem for me is that i do every job alone...i work 12 hours every day...years....my hands,my knees my back is pain....I am tired of this situation and thats i tell my self everyday"I don't to work anymore".... We have serious problem in my county to find people to work on this job ..Very difficult but i am still here.....
You have the benefit of a mixing station. As a garage painter I can't just mix some yellow tinter . It requires me to drive 30 minutes to the paint store. I'm not rral good with spray out cards. To me, they sometimes are very deceiving when it's in the garage all taped up and ready for paint. But, I do appreciate your attitude and the knowledge you share
You know I have no official training from a school but I was trained by two painters with combined 70 years experience. I’ve learned a lot but have a lot to learn. I agree you will mess up everyday on every job. Rare is it that you have one with no dirt to sand out before the last coat of base or whatever else. I’ve never felt that I want to leave the trade. Just that I have a love and hate relationship with boats but a passion for cars.
Brian, you have a lot of great experience and you make fantastic inspirational videos. The young people of today have have such an advantage with U Tube. I’m 59 next month and I started painting cars in 1983 and the only way to learn ( or so I thought ) was from how to articles in hot rod and car craft magazine and the learning curve was so difficult, if you got into the business a lot of guys would not share, there knowledge they were protecting their jobs by watching you fail miserably. it was hard to better yourself. But with training from you a young person can surpass the ignorant old timer that doesn’t care if the business succeeds or fails. You a good man that has helped a lot of young people, keep up the good work.
I've had those same thoughts. In fact, as mechanic that becomes a painter, I had wanted to give up many times as mechanic, but like you said, you need more time. Lord knows I'm not the greatest mechanic alive, but I have gotten to the point to where I do pretty well. The most is learned patience. If I do have short comings, I can deal with them better than I could before I made as many mistakes. Good luck my friend.

Im 22 years doing this professionally. There is ALWAYS goin to be a car that will break your nuts. Sometimes during the repairs, sometimes matching colours, sometimes blends. Some days i wanted to burn the booth. It happens to everyone! Main thing is dont bring the bad vibe home. Leave it in the shop. Whatever the problem it can always be fixed. Chin up.
It's gonna sound crazy but my one paint vendor started to supply "Frog tape" but not the stuff you see at lowes. I was having problems with the 3M yellow tape as well and the green wasn't any better honestly, just more expensive. The tape my vendor sent me is Yellow frog tape or gold whatever they want to call it, it's yellow but on the box it says gold. It's about $50 cheaper a case than 3M and I got better results with it, even on high end jobs and I'm not one for cheap tape I like the best tape money can buy but for whatever reason this stuff just works and it's more affordable. Just finished my 1st paint job, was frustrating AF. Had a new Gun to put the clear down, it had a bad pressure gauge and leaked, I figured out the gauge while testing the pattern, but only noticed the leak when the gun was tilted over the hood and dropped a glob of clear, I thought I may have tilted the gun too much and continued. Ended up with several globs and the usual orange peel of a 1st effort. A lot of wet sanding is in my future.
Yeah everytime brian, everytime i start painting im thinking to give up. Especially all those sanding, sanding and preparation for painting. However after the painting is done and the outcome looks great, i tell myself im not gonna quit again.😂haha
Thank you for this! I do not paint but same things apply to car detailing, I have been doing detailing for a little over a year and have had many moments when things just don't go as planned, but like you said, you just have to go through it and learn from your mistakes/hard times!
(ASE Certified back in 2000) Taking care not to overpour toners is important. Especially white. My opinion white is the hardest to match even for blending. Slower is sometimes faster in the end. DuPont has the VINdicator system for finding the right variant from using the VIN number. I had awesome results on first mixes with NO spray-out panels. I'm working as a collision tech, now for the past 5 years or so, Haven't painted but one job in 2 years, but it's like riding a bike.

Crazy coincidence Brian, I had asked you in last week’s video about some contour mapping that occurred when I sprayed clear over a metallic silver. I had trouble sleeping all weekend waiting to go back into class to see. Your advice was sound the mapping was easily buffed out. The blend and silver match was perfect, but then I painted the bumpers … When I applied the sealer it was a little heavy and caused excessive orange peel. So when I painted the base and clear it’s showing bad. I am very upset with myself because I am capable of doing better and I know I can. Right now I am trying to talk the instructor into letting me redo it because it’s the dean of the colleges car and I am unhappy with how it looks. I am glad this video hit on some solid points. You’re a true professional and I appreciate all of your advice.
Yup! And honestly, sometimes we don’t feel good until we redo the job, I’ll actually lose sleep at night probably like you did thinking about a job that needs to get redone so I’m right there with you
I'm living this right now spraying this RSX, I've been struggling with Sealer, had to sand it all back down because it was spraying texture on the panels, I think I need to over-reduce it, no matter how much I stir out of the can it's still thick n clumpy, I moved brands thinking it was the brand but getting the same issue, a video on getting the consistency/viscosity or whatever would be super helpful, now that the sealer is sanded down I'm just going with color and move on but man I've learned a lot from this experience, can't tell you how many times I wanted to quit..

After the last ruff days with late working over and over again i said fuck it will take a break and do it tomorrow.. This morning am so hyped and ready to own this job like never before P.s Spraying cars for about ~3 years now not much of experience but i look others a lot always reading about out job when i have time and aiming to improve every minute possible

The worst thing is getting a run on your last paint job and going home and searching on RUclips the whole nigyhow to sand a paint run 😂😂😂. You get addicted to the pressure
i had enough when a bug or 5 landed in my second or first clearcoat for the 8th time. Had to redo the whole thing several times. And I did NOT know that you cannot touch up with basecoat when you break through the clear. I wish I knew ... would have saved me a lot of trouble. Maybe an idea for a future video. how to fix those kind of mistakes. I did paint in a homemade booth - but even though the bugs found their way in.....
That is a big difference if you can tweak your paint color. I have there a few times, but I can't tweak the color. Maybe I will buy basic colors from my shop (like CMYK) to have. ❤
That yellow 3M tape is garbage. We went through a box of it at our shop after our normal tape became discontinued, and we just couldn't get it to stick to the point we've been using double the tape to keep it down. We've been using the teal blue 3M automotive tape lately and it's not amazing but it's definitely better than the yellow enough for us to keep using the teal blue 3M tape. Also, thank you for the video, kinda what I needed after not being completely happy with a 3 stage pearl job I just finished. Ended up having to spot in an area on a door after getting a piece of lint in the mid coat.
Painting is 85% mental and 15% skill. It has happened to me if i got pissed off about something an then go in the booth 9 times out of 10 something would go wrong i trip over the hose or a part fell off the stand. But dust yourself off calm down an breath
I have a lexus white pearl that is kicking my butt. New place and new paint system. Super thick water paint and its terrible. The new place has little to nothing to clean paint guns so when im spraying white i get little black specks all over. I wanted to quit today. No matter how much i tried to clean it i kept getting it. I wanted to quit today.
@PaintSociety unfortunately I just started this job and they use glasruit water and it's super thick. The only thing they have to wash the guns with are a small thinner bottle and everything is gummed up. I have a satas and they all are spitting. It could be the air hose but this place would never believe it. Absolutely killing me.

The tape my vendor sent me is Yellow frog tape or gold whatever they want to call it, it's yellow but on the box it says gold. It's about $50 cheaper a case than 3M and I got better results with it, even on high end jobs and I'm not one for cheap tape I like the best tape money can buy but for whatever reason this stuff just works and it's more affordable. Just finished my 1st paint job, was frustrating AF. Had a new Gun to put the clear down, it had a bad pressure gauge and leaked, I figured out the gauge while testing the pattern, but only noticed the leak when the gun was tilted over the hood and dropped a glob of clear, I thought I may have tilted the gun too much and continued. Ended up with several globs and the usual orange peel of a 1st effort. A lot of wet sanding is in my future.
Yeah everytime brian, everytime i start painting im thinking to give up. Especially all those sanding, sanding and preparation for painting. However after the painting is done and the outcome looks great, i tell myself im not gonna quit again.😂haha

Thank you for this! I do not paint but same things apply to car detailing, I have been doing detailing for a little over a year and have had many moments when things just don't go as planned, but like you said, you just have to go through it and learn from your mistakes/hard times!

(ASE Certified back in 2000) Taking care not to overpour toners is important. Especially white. My opinion white is the hardest to match even for blending. Slower is sometimes faster in the end.
DuPont has the VINdicator system for finding the right variant from using the VIN number. I had awesome results on first mixes with NO spray-out panels.
I'm working as a collision tech, now for the past 5 years or so, Haven't painted but one job in 2 years, but it's like riding a bike.

Crazy coincidence Brian, I had asked you in last week’s video about some contour mapping that occurred when I sprayed clear over a metallic silver. I had trouble sleeping all weekend waiting to go back into class to see. Your advice was sound the mapping was easily buffed out. The blend and silver match was perfect, but then I painted the bumpers … When I applied the sealer it was a little heavy and caused excessive orange peel. So when I painted the base and clear it’s showing bad. I am very upset with myself because I am capable of doing better and I know I can. Right now I am trying to talk the instructor into letting me redo it because it’s the dean of the colleges car and I am unhappy with how it looks. I am glad this video hit on some solid points. You’re a true professional and I appreciate all of your advice.
Yup! And honestly, sometimes we don’t feel good until we redo the job, I’ll actually lose sleep at night probably like you did thinking about a job that needs to get redone so I’m right there with you

I'm living this right now spraying this RSX, I've been struggling with Sealer, had to sand it all back down because it was spraying texture on the panels, I think I need to over-reduce it, no matter how much I stir out of the can it's still thick n clumpy, I moved brands thinking it was the brand but getting the same issue, a video on getting the consistency/viscosity or whatever would be super helpful, now that the sealer is sanded down I'm just going with color and move on but man I've learned a lot from this experience, can't tell you how many times I wanted to quit..

Great video you nailed that, this really resonated with me, this job isn't easy and it can be soul destroying when things don't go as you planned and it's a very time consuming job that can drain you mentally and physically . Well last night i had enough and i stoped at the base.. was spraying ford color UH and everything was fine lay my last hand of base and boom tiger stripes... After the last ruff days with late working over and over again i said fuck it will take a break and do it tomorrow.. This morning am so hyped and ready to own this job like never before
P.s Spraying cars for about ~3 years now not much of experience but i look others a lot always reading about out job when i have time and aiming to improve every minute possible

Painted a jeep PE4 in sikkenz today, lets say it was 10 hours in the booth for 4 doors and a hood.... They paint rep was called.

i had enough when a bug or 5 landed in my second or first clearcoat for the 8th time. Had to redo the whole thing several times. And I did NOT know that you cannot touch up with basecoat when you break through the clear. I wish I knew ... would have saved me a lot of trouble. Maybe an idea for a future video. how to fix those kind of mistakes. I did paint in a homemade booth - but even though the bugs found their way in.....

That is a big difference if you can tweak your paint color. I have there a few times, but I can't tweak the color.
Maybe I will buy basic colors from my shop (like CMYK) to have.

Never have had these jobs but I can tell you it does not look or sound like any bit of fun!
That yellow 3M tape is garbage. We went through a box of it at our shop after our normal tape became discontinued, and we just couldn't get it to stick to the point we've been using double the tape to keep it down. We've been using the teal blue 3M automotive tape lately and it's not amazing but it's definitely better than the yellow enough for us to keep using the teal blue 3M tape.
Also, thank you for the video, kinda what I needed after not being completely happy with a 3 stage pearl job I just finished. Ended up having to spot in an area on a door after getting a piece of lint in the mid coat.

Painting is 85% mental and 15% skill. It has happened to me if i got pissed off about something an then go in the booth 9 times out of 10 something would go wrong i trip over the hose or a part fell off the stand. But dust yourself off calm down an breath
I have a lexus white pearl that is kicking my butt. New place and new paint system. Super thick water paint and its terrible. The new place has little to nothing to clean paint guns so when im spraying white i get little black specks all over. I wanted to quit today. No matter how much i tried to clean it i kept getting it. I wanted to quit today.
It could be coming from the air line or air borne itself. You might want to get a brand new gun for yourself if you can
@PaintSociety unfortunately I just started this job and they use glasruit water and it's super thick. The only thing they have to wash the guns with are a small thinner bottle and everything is gummed up. I have a satas and they all are spitting. It could be the air hose but this place would never believe it. Absolutely killing me.
