Alphabase & Overstayer Modular Channel - No Talking

- Here's an often requested video with just the Alphabase and the fabulous Overstayer Modular Channel. It's a stereo rack unit with preamps, high/low resonant filters, an EQ, a compressor and a few different types of drive. There are about a thousand ways to drive that thing and it can go from subtle tape distortion to absolute total mayhem & annihilation. It's almost impossible to match levels so this is not your mastering session type demo. It's a creative box and I use it like it.
So, this is a pretty basic video with three different Alphabase drum machine patterns and me tweaking the Modular Channel live while it's sitting on the master insert. Hopefully you'll find sonic bits and pieces that grab your ear in there.

Anyone else become increasingly scarily obsessed with owning this beast?
rightly so.
@@LucasMarchal 😂
After rewatching the same few clips over and over for months, I finally succumbed to the GAS and ordered mine
@@lukechen3841 nice 👌 I’m doing the same every time I think about buying something off eBay or reverb I come back here to remind myself what I’m saving for!!
Hope the wait isn’t to painful 🤞
@@lukechen3841 nice 👌 I’m about half way & desperately trying not to get distracted by buying something else in the meantime & setting my piggy bank back to zero !!!
Has it arrived yet or are you still waiting impatiently!?
Anybody looking for analogue compression and distortion on their master channel, but don't have a spare 3,200€ - get a second hand Analog Heat (mk1!) from Elektron and the FMR RNC1773. To get the most use out of this compressor use a HPF in the sidechain and run it in parallel with the uncompressed mix, then run that into the Heat. Other options include the OTO BOUM.
Great music as always, Lucas! Wonderful demonstration. Thanks!
Thanks ! Yeah plenty of cheaper ways to compress/add warmth to your signals. Elysia plug-in emulations are super good, their 500/rack series too. Soundtoys Decapitator is great too. The Modular Channel really is a thing of its own though. This is the DS version without the mic input btw so a good bit cheaper than the DM version.
Im really drooling here watching this video, but i was wondering if i can get good results with analogue heath and bbe maxcom dual chanel compressor (i dont own analogue heath, but i might buying one)
there's a dozen of cheaper distortion/saturation boxes around, and the Heat is probably the worst choice for mastering. I'd not really recommend it even for tracking, but that's subjective. there's just much more classier units out there. the Overstayer is a different league, and it's much more than a dist.box. arguably, it's cheap for what it does. there's not many boxes in pro audio that can give it all in one machine
@@yurijogurtsov8710 What do you think of the NEVE MBT I know not really the same.. but do you have any experience with it or know someone that does?
@@nagchumpalot I think it's fabulous. one of the best piece of gear around. it's very different though. more suited for mastering, and 'home pre-mastering' so to say. mixing too. it's versatile enough, but it's not a creative mangler like the Overstayer MC. the comp on the MBT is also not for general comp duties, but if there's a single piece of h/w I could recommend getting getting first it's this. it's expensive, though, so the question is if one really needs something like that. if yes, I'd rather spend cash on the MBT than something like SSL Fusion or even LTL SB (though again, this one offers something else, like preamps). you can try it out at AccessAnalogue btw.
Love the the warm crunch of this. It’s what I love about techno; the organic, pulsating texture of an otherwise harsh landscape. Beautiful
It's really a box full of magic
@@LucasMarchal If it's good enough for Alessandro Cortini, and Floating Points, it's good enough for me ;>)
Reminds of Jeff Mills records
OoraMusic was using a DRM1 into the Modular Channel and that got my initial interest. But now you done gone and moved the Overstayer up to the top of my dang wish list! Bangin’ demonstration using the Alphabase for the source. Literally playing live with those hardcore sound shaping options. Brilliant!
Thank you ! Glad you enjoyed the video
What a gorgeous bit of kit. From nuanced to devastating. And how about that Alphabase? Just played this demo for a friend and it still shines.
Thank you ! Both are great instruments that's for sure
Fantastic, thanks.
Sold. Nice chops man.
thank you :)
best demo ever
Thank you mate
WOW!! The Overstayer is 🔥
yeah, amazing bit of kit
That crunchy grit at 18.42 ... nice
from 7:00 to 7:30 was exactly what I want to hear. I could listen to that going back and forth for a long time,. very nice! I'm hoping it sounds as good on a synth as beats.
It does ! I always run every track through it, synths included.
Some unit, drooling. great demo cheers
Thank you ! It's an amazing unit.
Jeez. Incredible sounding thing.
Hey thanks for doing it!!!! Utterly awesome ;)
No problem, glad you enjoyed it ! Still taking requests :)
Ohhh!! I neeed this in my life!! 🙏🔥Amazing as usual!!
Thanks ! 🌀
Lovely.. Just the type of Overstayer demo video I was looking for.. Thanks. By the way what's the SPL thing? on top of the rack?
It’s one of spl’s headphone amps, not sure which one they have a ton!
Some double as monitor controllers 👍
Thank you ! Indeed the SPL is the Control One, a handy monitor controller/headphone amp. It's really good.
thanks for doing it!
thanks for very inspiring videos!
a have a question - do you use RME totalmix and use the modular channel as an insert, or do you have everything hooked up to a mixer? Are you happy with the workflow that you have chosen (whichever it is)?
Hi, I don't use totalmix, never really got into it. My main interface is the Motu 16a with the RME UC as adat. All the instruments go straight in to the interface and I have my FX set up as send return. The overstayer is set up as an insert as well. I mix in Ableton. I'm happy with the setup, it just works. I'd love a good mixer in the future but that will be in the next iteration of the studio as I don't have the space right now.
Sounds great!
thanks ! I let the machines do the talking
Top 👌🙂 merci pour la demo
Very nice Demo of the Overstayer... But the new star for me here is the alpha base! Wow what a sound, this is exactly the kind of drum sound i'am searching for. Love the clean and full low-end. I guess you're multi tracking the Alpha Base via your MOTU/RME into Ableton, is there any additional processing happening on the individual tracks or is the sound simply Alpha Base summed in Ableton and back out to the Overstayer?
Thank you ! Yes the Alphabase sounds great! I am indeed multitracking the Alphabase but for this demo it's only summed in Live and ran through the overstayer, no eq or anything on the individual channels. There's a big big demo of the Alphabase coming btw :)
@@LucasMarchal that’s exactly what I wanted to hear :) looking forward to the alpha base video! You’re content is really good!
Right that’s it new tactic, resist buying the analog heat save the money & convince myself the overstayer is 700 cheaper than it actually is 😃
It will pay for itself in sonic pleasure
@@LucasMarchal sounds like it probably will!!
If i look at it as several rack units in one, itll probably actually save me money in the long run. 😂
Sick video & gorgeous textures!! Small question - Are you plugged into the XLRs Line IN&OUT?
I'm bypassing the EQ somehow..
Thanks ! Yes using the XLR in/out. Are you sure one of the EQ switch isn't down ?
Magique 🦄
Merci ;)
Bought a alphabase after seeying uour video's. The overstayer is soooo much fun! Way out of budget. Is the some plugin than will do a bit of this magic weten fiddeling around with my nee alphabase?
Ableton Drum Buss, Decapitator, there's also a Overstayer MAS plug in which I ear is really good, worth a try !
@@LucasMarchal tx! The alphabase is much more inviting to 'create' then the Rytm ( have em both ). For me at least. Do you now if i can change the volume of the tracks with midi ( i use the midi channels of my octatrack mainly for the VirusTI2 ).
@@mickvdzwan it's fully velocity sensitive with midi so you should be able to yes !
That Modular Channel sounds insane. What wooden rack unit are you using?
it's from Gould Case, he does beautiful work.
14:43....holy SH** ...I want it!
With so many devices is enough the RME UCX? Or you have more input chanel in other pre amps?
No my main interface is a MOTU 16A but it doesn't have preamp, only line input.
@@LucasMarchal Do you have both the 16A and UCX connected in any way?
I've had in the past a AH ZED r16 connected via ADAT to a old Motu 828, for a total of 24 channels.
Just got the UCX II to replace both units since firewire and newer Macs its impossible to use. But still need more line inputs and I hate messing around with patchbays. Right now I'm searching the market for a good quality Ad/Da but they only seems to come in 16in/out and the UCX only has a pair of ADAT, so in theory I can only use more 8in/out. To use additional channels simultaneously would need a UFX 2/3 and a Ferrofish 16, I'm correct? What should I look for?
Any help would be much appreciated. Many thanks :)
@@leandrodomingues50 my UC is connected via Adat to the 16a yes; so it gives me 8 more inputs. I guess the best option when you need more I/O is the Ferrofish !
Hi Lucas, nice demo. Sounds wonderful. I'm looking for a harmonic sound mangler/designer/distorter for field recordings as well as music. I make music out of field recordings all in the box. I want something that can add that always sort after warmth but can work as a sound design tool as well. I checked the Culture Vulture but this Overstayer seems to have more options for shaping sound. Do you ever use it for anything under this sonic umbrella?
I don't use fields recordings, but the Overstayer is probably the most complete / flexible of the character rack units out there. You would get a ton of mileage out of it. It's definitely as much in the sound design realm as the "mastering" realm. I was hesitating between this and the Silver Bullet (there's a mkII now) which seems really nice as well, but less sound design and more of a "make everything sound good" box. BTW if you're into field recordings and techno, a friend recently put out an EP where the only sounds sources are recordings of metal plates, mangled in the DAW; and it's really good : ygam.bandcamp.com/album/acier-leste
@@LucasMarchal Great. This was my hunch about Overstayer. Yes, I looked at the LTL and the SSL Fusion. The Overstayer is what I'm looking for. I've ordered one. Gotta wait about 5 months but it'll be worth it. Thanks very much for your response and the link. I shall check. Cheers.
Do you only run the AB through the Overstayer? Or do you use as a master bus for all hardware (and possibly software)
yes I use it on everything most of the time :)
@@LucasMarchal thank you
How do you use the Modular Channel? Hardwired with Alphabase?
No it's on the master insert of Ableton Live, meaning I have a pair of cables going out from my audio interface into the MC and back into the audio interface. Like a send/return, but 100% wet, for the whole mix.
This or SSL FUSION on the mixbus ?
Never used a Fusion but the Overstayer is a thousand times more flexible / goes to 11 compared to the Fusion. Wether or not that a good thing for the mixbus is for you to decide.
To be honest though, it better sound incredible, Its £2900!!
not surprised at all with the amount of control & possibilities , these type of studio equipment is very expensive usually
I know the initial cost is hard to swallow but for the amount of flexibility and power you get it's quite fair actually. Try to piece together a few 500 modules to barely approximate the functionality and see how much it will cost...
@@LucasMarchal Im not into eurorack but I get your point dude
@@LucasMarchal Heck, I can’t get my hands on one… Overstayer has no parts to make these right now
dude.
