Are the 1/2 mic outputs of Big Knob Studio suitable for recording electric guitar with DAW VST amplifiers? I did not find a Hi-Z mode, and I do not like the tone, too much background noise and distortion
Thanks for the review Arthur! This is the first recording of the Mackie Big Knob Studio or Studio + I have been able to find so far. Might I bend your ear for a moment? I am trying to decide on a lower cost unit that would travel with me for on-site audiobook recording. The preamp/AD section is the most important to me (though having two headphone outputs is a nice bonus). I have narrowed it down to the Mackie Knob Studio +, Behringer U-Phoria series or the 2nd Gen. Scarlett series. Do you have any experience with the sound of the either the U-Phoria or 2nd Gen. Scarlett to compare the preamp/AD on this one to?
Thank you; you're welcome. I have Focusrite Saffire to compare but not the U-phoria: I thoroughly recommend the Big Knob Studio+. I really enjoyed using it as an artist/songwriter and I I liked the recording (in my audio engineer/mixer role). I have some high-end pre's to compare with: I'm impressed by the Onyx pre's! The AD/DA conversion is clean and the general audio quality is very good. Great value for the money and more. Best : D
Thanks! I used the SubPhatty synth but at low gain level...more sub than mids. It's almost a 'rough track' just enough info to give an indication of the preamps. The sub is probably pushing the Onyx pre's to the limit but they're still better than many. Cheers : D
@@ArthurStone Thanks for the review! I'm wondering if you can use the new big knob series standalone, without connecting the usb, just plugging a separate interface into the inputs and not using up a usb port for the big knob. I basically want to just use it for headphone/talkback functionality, not as my main interface.
David Terrell Yes, it works in standalone mode. I picked a Big Knob Studio (not Studio+) up on Sunday night to demo alongside a Scarlett 6i6 (2nd Gen.) and for the first hour or so I used it purely in standalone mode, plugging in mics while monitoring through the headphone outputs on the unit and watching the metering. The AD/preamp combo is darker than on the on Scarlett 2nd Gen., so that was perfect for what I wanted to record at that point.
Quick question, is there anyway i can mute the Di when tracking, i just wanted to hear my guitar with the fx laid out on my daw and not the raw Di. i cant dial the tones properly as the Di for my guitar is always playing simultaneously with my Daw post output
Hey Gearslutz: I use the AKG k 701 headphones. I have already tested it on a dozen interfaces. But for rock (hard) vocals, isn't a single interface that goes loud enough without a headphone amp so far. You see you are using the AKG 702 headphones you get out there: i find these very very nice, they're nice headphone amps, the not the high-end ones, but they're great they dont hurt your ears. what do you mean. can you for example Metal singing style (roar) get the volume loud enough. or do you need a headphone amplifier? (it is a google tranlate i am dutch speaking).
This actually sounds nice! The quality of the Onyx preamps is very good.
How's the latency, 44.1 and 24-bit, at 64/128? Thanks!
After hearing the Night Flower I'm definitely buying it.

thepalalias The AD/preamp on the Mackie Big Knob Studio (+) is darker and less crisp/edgy than on the Scarlett 2nd. Gen. interfaces.

Cool.
Some seriously deep bass on that song clip.

@@davidterrell6857 - Yes David. Great standalone unit! Recommended. Thank you too : D
Can this device be used as a studio controller only or do you have to use the audio interface too?
Mackie big knob studio plus or Audient id44?

Can you connect a external preamp?
Yes; into the line inputs.
do this interface work with pro tools 10

A 2-channel recorder -- for only $300. Heck, that only comes out to $150 per channel. What a bargain, thanks, Mackie.
