    You did a great job on the TIG for a being new at it. It takes a while to learn, unlike a MIG. Really enjoy your videos - thanks !

    That patch turned out pretty decent there Phillip, tig welding does take some practice for sure but that turned out great! Enjoyed the video, have a great week and enjoy your Fathers Day too!

    Thanks again, Phillip! 'Nice work on the patches! Isn't it helpful how the copper backer absorbs heat, and helps prevent blow-outs? Learning THAT trick was a game-changer for me, for sure! Enjoy!

    Got good with that TIG by the end of the video. I bought a TIG in hoping to do some cleaner welds on some sheetmetal on my '40. Definitely need more practice, you're right, the pros make it look easy.

      Yes sir, I was running out of time to get the video done and wasn't able to really get into it, but I made some adjustments along the way and things improved drastically. I think I'll make a couple more adjustments and get even better next time. Practice does help, which is why I wanted to not take the easy route this time, and just went ahead with the TIG till I got it right.

    I never make fun of anyone’s work, especially when they are better at it than me....patches turned out great... Hope your daughters car was okay...

      My skill level with the TIG had me struggling for a little bit, but things got better as time went on, and I'm happy with the end result. My daughter's car was fine, we were blessed. Thankfully, the hail was small, but it scared me for a minute there.

    I used to use a mig lot, but when i bought the tig, i have done most of the welding with that. It sure needs some practising and the panel gaps are tighter than they are with mig. Personally i really like to use it, even the mig might be easier way to do it in some cases.

    • @phillipshotrodgarage
      @phillipshotrodgarage  Год назад

      It's easy just to grab the MIG and go since I'm comfortable with it. But, I think forcing myself to get it right with the TIG was the right thing to do to improve my skills.

    Maybe not having a gap you could throw a cat through would help when you're trying to weld material thinned by dipping it in acid.

    • @phillipshotrodgarage
      @phillipshotrodgarage  Год назад

      If you watched the previous video on this project, there was no gap. I had it fitting perfectly. When i clamped it and I started welding, and I let it move somehow. By the time I realized it, it was too late and I had to press on through it. The metal was very thin before dipping it in acid. I tried to limit the amount of exposure to the acid to keep it from getting any thinner. I let the acid soften the rust, and used a wire brush to mechanically scrub the rust off to help speed up the process to help reduce metal loss. If I was a professional TIG welder, things would have gone better for sure. I made a couple of mistakes but I worked through them, and when it is all said and done, I will save a piece that most people would have thrown away. Thanks for watching, I appreciate the comments.

    And if you ever weld stainless steel wear a respirator to protect from hexavalent chromium

    • @phillipshotrodgarage
      @phillipshotrodgarage  Год назад +1

      I didn't notice any smoke or smell. I cleaned a piece of metal with brake clean before I welded one time, and that was a mistake. That made me sick and it took me a while to breathe well. I learned a valuable lesson that day. As far as this video, by the end of the video, I had the issue figured out. I'll probably talk about it in the next video. By the end of the video, everything was going much smoother.
