Is that a specialized extruded polystyrene detailing rock you can usually buy at a model making store or should I try to obtain my own through some other source?
Yes, this is a specialized detailing rock that's being made in only one place in the world. It's being made in a small town called "Rothenburg ob der Tauber" in Bavaria. I heard about it in the very secretive model making forum, so I went there to find the store where it's made. It's run by an old model builder called Günter. I stayed in his house above the model making store. He asked me to build something in front of him so that I would prove my worth, and that he could study my technique and produce a perfect stone for my model making needs. It took him around two weeks and at the end I was presented with the stone during a small spiritual ceremony. In one part of that ceremony I had to swear not to reveal the name of his store because he doesn't want to be overflown with orders. I paid 2700€ for my custom stone, but don't worry, you can use just a normal stone from your garden. It won't produce the same, perfect results as mine, but it will work. I wish you happy building, and as master Günter would say: "Lieber einen Stein in der Hand als in der Niere."
oh my that is insane! I have heard of that guy, years ago, but I had always taught it is just a funny story circling model making community... what an experience! kudos! I did not hear much about the stone ceremony but is it true he takes a single tooth from each one of his clients that go through the ceremony?
@@dejangotic Yes, well, you do understand that I can't really talk about it as the whole thing is very secretive and I did make an oath of silence. However, I can confirm that the tooth rumor is true. It's a part of ancient modelmaking tradition that was passed from one model builder to another all the way from ancient Greece. It was conceived by a Greek shipwright/modelbuilder Deinόpoiόs Sυρεrglυόs and it was believed the ritual enabled the conjurer to have temporary powerful magical skills for crafting models. The exact process for the ritual was unfortunately lost to time for thousands of years, but, in a lucky turn of events, old Günter was interested in alchemy from his young age and accidentally stumbled upon some documents about this Greek tradition in his local library. After many years of research and experiments he managed to recreate the exact process of the ritual. My tooth was the last one he needed and he now had all the ingredients to complete the ritual. I already said too much, but I will say that Günter's magical transition will take place at the end of the lunar equinox in 2027, and I suggest to have your eyes pointed at the skies above Bavaria at that time.
A really good trick I picked up for depicting rusty objects like manholes (hehehe) years ago: Paint it a rusty colour first, then rub the raised areas with a pencil then your thumb to smooth it out. The graphite perfectly replicates that worn but oxidised look that real cast iron manhole covers have. It picks up the light perfectly.
I've been making miniature terrain for tabletop wargames for around 16 years. What you do (building miniatures for movies) is something I dreamed of doing. I had a small commission job to build a command deck of a spaceship in style with Star Trek but it is almost not visible in the final movie. Keep doing what you do!!! It is inspiring and very informative!!!
While the Control Center and Mobile launcher might be more complex builds, I think this is your most photorealistic miniature. Last shot looks like something from a Wes Anderson movie.
This has been a very insightful series- so many tips and tricks. I appreciate how you just nonchalantly created this miniature masterpiece and showed us how to do it 👍🏻 Have fun with the edit!!!

These guys should be world famous they are doing great work with newly no budget. Hollywood needs to go back to smaller budgets and make better things.
Hollywood is not indie film making. but i agree, hollywood should be better than it is right now. altho i think its getting better. films like The Batman, The Joker, Oppenheimer, Barbarian, or Babylon are really great.
It just looks amazingly realistic! Unfortunately, I didn’t catch what you used for the concrete walls? Some kind of plaster? P.S. The last joke is so funny that I laughed through the manhole! 😸
it was glue for tiles, or the grout used for filling gaps between tiles. Or you can mix plaster with sand. the pint is to have something a bit more rougher than plaster. ❤
So, totally unrelated... have you watched "The Man in the High Castle"? That said... rusting unified man holes?... you're welcome... but you'll need more rust and a bigger... sponge-on-tweezer... SUPPLIES! (but not in a good way)

Thank you very much! 😉
Agreed! So good! Amazing skills!
Makes me so happy.
Your narration is just perfect comedic timing. Thank you so much for brightening up my weekends with each new video release!
Glad you like them! 😊❤
The finished shot looks sooo good! Very realistic! Love it!
Rusty Manholes will be the name of my new band. You made me LOL!
HAHA! Yes!!! It's a perfect band name. Let me know if you need a guitar player. I know: C, Am, G, D and Em
@@sliceoflifefilm we can play a lot of songs with those chords! Keep up the great work. Love what you do and I have learned a lot.
Will it feature a trombone player?
That hangar looks SO good! The end result will be fantastic. As always - thanks for sharing. 👍
Thank you! Cheers!
Nothing like a good laser cut manhole! What an awesome building and the construction techniques are awesome!!
Couldn't agree more! 😂
You’re mad talented and these videos are always a joy to watch.
Glad you like them!
7:13 one of my favourite tricks is to use potting soil to dirty up spaces. The grit makes stuff more like it’s actually dirty and clumpy
6:29 Really Loved that Optimistic Attitude ❤🔥
haha

Oh yes! I saw that somewhere. Sounds like a great technique, I'll try it out. Tnx!!
@@sliceoflifefilm Np!
A color remaster of this movie would be crazy and I haven't even seen the actual film yet
Hahaha...
You do some really good work. That building front looks great! Your painting and weathering are top-notch.
Thank you very much!
Your enthusiasm is contagious, loving these videos. Thanks for sharing guys.
Thanks for watching! 😉❤
It must take many years of experience to get to the point that you can make it look this easy :)
Amazing work!

You Created Pure Magic! This is so inspiring, thanks a lot

Those models look so good.
Glad you like them!
Very good work! I love your movies and your love to detail in them...keep going!
Thank you very much!

Oh haha.. Yea that tends to happen 😂. Such details wont be seen in the film so no worries. Thanks for the info. ;)
Another inspiring segment. Tremendous.
Thanks a lot!
So awesome! Plus you're extremely entertaining as well! Thank you for sharing your incredible content!
Much appreciated! Thanks for watching!

Yes! It is similar to his style. Symmetrical shot probably helps!

Sounds Great!
fantastic
So just standard wood filler like used in finish carpentry mixed with water for the filler wash?
Pretty clever, boss.
Very good video indeed!
That is correct! Wood filler is awesome! 😉
i love this so much ❤
Your videos are awesome! Some I’ve watched several times. Could you please tell me what scale your finished hanger was made in?
Thanks a lot. I don't even know the scale, I built it by feeling 🤣

lol i read the title as Nasa supplied you guys with a hangar for filming
Haha,, yes it could sound like that hahah
Very good video the miniatures are excellent and the joke was funny, believe it or not.😂
Haha thanks!
On what scale would you recomment to built a miniature like this?
I have no idea. I do it by feeling 🤣. Or if we need to use a car for example with it, then I match it to an existing model we have.
@@sliceoflifefilm oooo what! Hahah thats cool
movie magic 🥰
Thank you 😊
This guy laughed at the Supplies joke!
Haha. Glad to hear! 😉
Why do you thank me for washing? I haven't washed since last year.
🤣🤣🤣
For the algorithm 🤟
Haha! Yea! Thanks!
And yes, better a stone in the hand than in your kidney. Couldn't agree more!
🤣
#42... and Don't Panic!
YES!
I've been following this channel for years but I still do not understand if you make miniatures to make movies or you make movies to make miniatures 😂
