🍿 Doctor Who: Wild Blue Yonder (2023)
🎬 David Tennant and Catherine Tate unite once again in the second of Doctor Who's 60th Anniversary Specials. This time, the TARDIS and sonic screwdriver jump out of the equation, leaving the Doctor having to use his wits to figure out what danger lurks on an abandoned spaceship...

Bad… the green screen was woeful, the villain is too reminiscent of other past aliens like a mix of the midnight entity and prisoner zero but not developed well. The doctor taking the wrong Donna only to realise so quickly after was kind of pointless? A big criticism I’ve heard of doctor who in general is the sonics ability to magically do things for plot convenience, I know they explain it as it being a new sonic etc but it gets annoying to be honest. I really wanted to like these new episodes but so far it’s been pretty disappointing. Another case of Disney milking nostalgia of fans

They treated the Timeless Child like The Doctor is still mad that there are things about himself he's too scared to learn, but even madder that the universe was nearly completely detroyed as he was looking for them.
That is alot more narratove weight then the episodes focused on these things could express.

Something I’ve noticed about this iteration of Tennant’s Doctor so far is that while it’s quite similar to the 10th Doctor, the main difference is that this Doctor seems more open emotionally. 10 would only occasionally have moments where he showed an emotional or vulnerable side, like after Rose’s departure, getting uncharacteristically agressive when asking Martha about Yana in Utopia, the Master’s death and even his meltdown (I don’t mean this in a bad way) before saving Wilf. 14, on the other hand, seems to have more emotional moments that have less personal restraint, like saying how much Donna and Wilf mean to him, the upset when he has to bring the DoctorDonna back, being as accusatory as Donna when the Tardis leaves and getting angry later in the episode. All that in the span of TWO episodes, as opposed to 10’s occasional moments through three series and a handful of specials.

Anyone else think that the mavity word has more significance than just quirky fun. There was one instance where the doctor uses the word gravity subconsciously and then apologises about it. One moment we are expected to believe that the doctor interacts with newton, influencing him and instantly rewriting history changing gravity to mavity and even changing the doctor and Donas memory of the word. The fact that the word gravity still exists in the doctors head is sounding the cloister bell in my mind. My understanding of doctor who tells me two situations normally happen: one it doesn't matter what the doctor does because he was always going to be part of that moment in time so ultimately the time line is unchanged; Secondly if the doctor changes something that he knows was supposed to happen then a paradox or parallel world is created and the doctor is always aware that something changed and typically that change is corrected. Therefore all previous doctor who lore should say that changing the word gravity to mavity without the doctor being aware it's wrong should be impossible and the fact that the doctor subconsciously used the word gravity should highlight that on some level the doctor knows something is very wrong. I don't know what's happening but the doctors perception of reality is being severely influenced to the point that makes me wonder when did it start?

Great episode! As you state the eeriness of the unknown entity coupled with the reference to The Doctors past to give The Timeless Children revelation genuine depth and intrigue going forward did it for me. With Bernard Cribbins being the cherry on the top! Russell doesn’t always get it right but it’s great to have him back as he adds depth and fun and on the whole there is no better show runner for DW IMO. So far I think these specials are doing a perfectly good job for the anniversary as opposed to them just shoehorning cameos in left, right and centre. Jodie’s exit just a couple of episodes back was already the nostalgia fest in that respect. However I would never be disappointed if Christopher Ecclestone and Paul McGann showed up in the final special. I know that will not happen and likely doesn’t need to but I would love that. In fact I’d just love more screen time with either of them in the future. So that aside my main hope for the 14th doctors last episode is that we learn why that face again and why his clothes regenerated too. Bring on next weeks! Wow… I haven’t felt this excited for an episode of Doctor Who since the 50th anniversary!

Everything about this episode was amazing. The silly little jokes between the Doctor and Donna, them changing something so small like the word gravity to mavity, then using it in sentences as normal, the clones looking absolutely terrifying at times but looking goofy at just the right times to relieve tension. My absolute favourite bit about this was the fact that RTD actually let the audience think and be curious about what is happening. I hate it when episodes are explained too much, shoving the answer straight in the audience's face. This episode was truly up to the audience's interpretation as to what the monster actually was and why everything was happening and that's what made me love it so much. Russel has drawn a line down the middle and gone "half the universe is gone" which IMO is a good call - it still leaves a ton of consequence to work through, but everything in the universe that we need to still be there probably is.

I liked this one a lot more than the first one. I mean, they were both good, but this one doesn't have the heavy handed gender politics. Thought that might just be cuz rose wasn't there. Regardless, it was fun, it was confusing, and the monsters were actually kinda freaky when they weren't being goofy. The arms bit was so unsettling. Dunno why people keep comparing it to Midnight. Aside from the very basic premise of being trapped on a ship with an unknown disguise, its very different in tone, themes, and story.

I agree... there's probably as much Heaven Sent in there in that case. Ignoring who plays the Doctor and looking instead at the structure of the story in terms of how late in the episode the penny drops and the change in pace afterwards; the monotony and repetitiveness (both in a good way) to get to the plot resolution point. Not to mention the very limited number of actors used. If Midnight didn't have the "copying" bit in it, I don't think it would come to mind at all.

One thing i got from this is that the timeless child can be brought up and that it might be going somewhere or to him telling Ruby in the future. Lets hope that RTD has a vision for that if he includes it again though. The first one i did like but i assumed correctly that i would like this episode a lot more. Ofc i know nothing of the last one rn, but this episode was so freaking good. Im so hyped for RTD's next era if he's writing like this, i love the Doctor and anything that dives into his past or these little like bottle episodes that expose his character. Midnight is one of if not my favorite episode of New Who (and Heaven Sent, which is also just the Doctor), and this is it but if it was The Doctor and Donna. WHAT MORE COULD YOU ASK FOR.

    • @initiatinreallife
      @initiatinreallife 6 месяцев назад

The only thing that "frustrates" me about the timeless child conclusion is that it reveals one big truth about RTD in contrast to the other two NuWho showrunners: No matter how he might feel about his colleagues time on the show, he respects their work and seeks to work with it rather than discard it and start over. And that is something neither Moffat nor Chibnall did. Moffat retconned one of the cleverest things NuWho had going for it (namely: the time war) and rarely ever had any continuity to RTDs run. Chibnall completely bulldozed over Moffats contributions by destroying Gallifrey again. So now Gallifrey is gone but in a much less interesting way. He also completely ignored the beautifully done character development Missy went through. With all that I think RTD had every right to just ignore what the other show runners did. I commend him for not doing that (although its no secret that I have always hated the timeless children twist - I genuinely think its one of the worst things that ever happened to this show). But this kind of continuity is very one-sided.

Tennant proving still to be a better Dr than smith , capaldi and Whittaker combined. And as usual Tate managing great acting / terror gobbiness and humour often at same time. At first I didnt even think about it but then I noticed things like the teeth and the changing of body type. Just like Prisoner Zero with the guy and the dog and the alien got the dog and human backwards? It would also make sense as to why no one knew the aliens had gotten on the ship since it uses vision perception (can only be seen in the corner of your eye). Thank you for giving an honest, unbiased review of this episode when so many are just jumping on the "IT'S TOO WOKE!" bandwagon. I wasn't a fan of Star Beast at all, and this episode had a couple of cringe moments, namely the race swapped Newton and making the Doctors sexuality so overt, the second one totally unnecessary as we all already knew that anyway, (it's like RTD forgot all about the Doctors interactions with Cpt Jack. ) At least it was short and not made into a "thing"
Overall, I enjoyed the episode very much, it was tense, creepy and did well invoking a sense of isolation. It reminded me of Event Horizon in some ways, like a family friendly version. I hope it goes on in this direction with the focus on the storytelling and the characters important traits (which is not their gender, sexuality or race) They're gay, straight, female, male, white, black, whatever, yes yes, just get on with telling a great Doctor Who story please.

    Spoiler Warning
This is the best doctor who episode since twice upon a time. Its a solid 9/10 story that I have missed for so long.
After the dissapointment and frustration of the previous episode its so great to see an episode, especially an experimental episode that actually works!
This episode reminds me of listen in a lot of ways, the experimental conceit and the idea of trying to unfold a mystery to which most answers would be unsatisfactory, yet both episodes pull off good solutions.
The horror was extremely well executed and the antagonists were very creative and the right combination of camp and silliness. The whole conceit is very interesting and executed very well.
It is understated and small scale in all the right ways. The corridor does kinda look a bit weird but the effects apart from that are all excellent. Also I love that the climax is just running down the same corridor lol.
This touches into cosmic horror to some extent and since its probably my favorite genre of horror it worked very well.
I love the scene where 14 remembers the flux and somehow in 1 scene I feel 1000x more than I did during flux.
I initially did find the 15 years line weird, but immediatelty realised it was with respect to Donna; This makes the 1 million years wrt Donna hit a lot harder because The Doctor has experienced thousands of years of pain(depending on how you count heaven sent it could be said to be in the billions); Yea it all hurts a lot more.
Oh small nitpick(kinda); I dislike the advertising of this episode as 'Farther than they have ever gone' considering Scherzo definitely and Heaven Sent in terms of the unexplanability of it all would both definitely place higher.
What a nice back to form.
