The VR headsets are recruitment tools, not reconnaissance tools. The alien cultists ETO are the ones who use them, not the trisolaran San-Ti. The reason the story feels so scattered is because it is simultaneously adapting all 3 books because they are kinda run parallel to each other and overlap in only some parts. The characters have been completely reimagined and with the exception of Dashi who plays Daashi, Will Downing who is pretty much playing Tianming and Saul who is playing Luo Ji, all the other characters are new and created from a mixture or characters in the books, and in some cases 1 character has even been split apart into to different people. Basically most characters are combinations of characters in different forms.Cheng Xin from the books is kept in Jin Cheng, AA is split into Jin Cheng and Auggie, Wang is split into Auggie, Jin and Jack, Raj is Zhang Behai and another character in the book, Wade plays wade and also some of the early characters in the first book. The storylines feel muddled because they are from three different books. I can explain it a bit:
Book 1 The Three Body Problem: The VR storyline, the Ye Wenjie story in China, the Nanofiber weapon story (basically Auggie and Jin's stories)
Book 2 The Dark Forest [lmao the best book]: The Wallfacer project (Saul's story, but v only get the introduction in season 1, he will most likely be the main character in season 2), The military advancement of earth ( Raj's story but v only get the intro to it in season 1), Cryostasis being introduced. (Basically Saul's story)
Book 3 Death's End: The Staircase project (Jin, Auggie and Will's story) and stuff i cannot tell here because its massive spoilers. (Basically Jin and Will's stories)
As you can see all three of these have events that occur at the same time thats why the series has portions of each book with Book 1 being fully finished. In the books the main charavters for each book are different and do not know each other, and Luo Ji (Saul) and Cheng Xin (Jin) on briefly meet a couple of times in book 3.
Thats why this show seems stuffed with ideas, because it actually kinda is. But i still respected it and think this is the best way they could have adapted it for a tv for a western audience.

What's so hard about it? How the series adapts the book is important. Or, better yet, watch the first (and only currently out) season of the Tencent's "Three Body" version: it is an almost 1:1 recreation of the first book, and video is a richer medium + that series respects the viewer more & doesn't dumb down the science and everything. It wasn't the profound engrossing show I was hoping and thinking it could be, but its worth a watch and I'd look forward to a 2nd season and hopefully they get their rhythm down by then. I'd be surprised if this became a Netflix breakout hit. It's too sci-fi and not good enough to pull in the masses.

The book is set largely in China and features mostly Chinese characters. Most of the key characters in the show were not in the book.
The video game was designed to identify people sympathetic to the San Ti cause . While the San Ti can observe everything, they can not read minds.
The nuclear blast propulsion system is actually a genuine concept that has been studied over the years , it was selected in the show because it was the only option that would be workable in the time available.

    • @johannmoller8110
      @johannmoller8110 2 месяца назад

"The nuclear blast propulsion system is actually a genuine concept "
      Exactly!
It is explained in the book that when nuclear bombs explode in space they don't work like in atmosphere. There isn't a shockwave blast, just a large burst of radiation. This explains how a nuclear-blast powered radiation sail could work in theory. I think in general all the concepts in 3-body are hard-scifi and plausibly based on current scientific knowledge. There is no magic like e.g. a FTL warp-drive or artificial gravity.

Book 1's most interesting bits were Red Coast, the VR levels, Judgement Day Quartet, and I guess learning about the Sophons. They did all that quite well in the show even if it was brief. The good stuff is in books 2 and 3; and by putting the intros into this season they were able to offload the slow bits to parts of this season when we're already invested in figuring out what's next. The VR's purpose is to find which persons would be sympathetic to their issue, willing to help them, and are also smart. You obviously are not one of those people as the show literally told you how they were able to make the universe blink. The reason everything can't be answered is the reason it is a multi-season plan show. Why would they tell you everything? All the things you didn't like e.g. the many storylines are actually condensed compared to the book (reading the books requires a lot more focus we are talking about theoretical science here). One thing to note is that this isn't Benioff and Weiss redeeming themselves. Remember, they did write the first four seasons of Game of Thrones, which were amazing. That's because they actually tried back then, and they worked closely with George RR Martin. But then the Red Wedding happened. By the time that episode aired they had already finished writing Season 4, so the popularity of the Red Wedding didn't affect that season.
The next thing they wrote was Season 5. This is where the quality of the writing dropped like a rock. At that point there still were two more books to adapt. The show getting bad because they ran out of books is a myth. They chose to abandon the plot long before that. By all right, Jon Snow should have been betrayed at the end of Season 6, not 5. Why is this important? Well, there is an event at the end of the second book that they are talking about the exact same way they spoke about the Red Wedding. Basically, they are going to stop trying.
One thing I found rather funny is that in the Chinese version of the book the aliens are called the San Ti, but in the Chinese adaptation they are called the Trisolarans. Instead it's in the western adaptation they are called the San Ti.

in the books it's different, the alien didn't made the game, they also don't care about recruiting new people. It was the ETO/Earth's Trisolaris Organization that behind everything. The game was just a normal online game that eveyone can play without invitation, the VR set was also normal VR. The show removed the inner conflict inside the ETO between the redemptionists, who trying to solve the three-body problem so the Trisolaran won't arrive, and the adventists, who hated humanity and wanted the Trisolaran invade us and eliminate all humans.

  • @scottwatrous

I like the comparison to Interstellar.
If we were to map this series to Interstellar (assuming they adapt the whole trilogy), then the end of this season is basically equivalent to the point in Interstellar where they launch the rocket from Earth and are about to enter the wormhole in that movie. At this point in the story, it's seemingly all about corn and farming and dustbowls, a mystery wormhole, why NASA is hidden, and there's some compelling character stuff but we haven't gotten into the real meat of anything quite yet. We just have an outline of what to possibly expect.
So far then, this show is a lot more exciting than an Interstellar TV series would have been.
I agree I wish the VR stuff was a bit more drawn out into the season, and had more build up. There was a lot of nuanced stuff cut there from the books (but nothing consequential at the end of the day) and yet they still had to rush. So the VR stuff also saw a lot of the mystery streamlined down. it's really only that there was so much to do afterwards and only so much time available to show it. The show could have easily fallen into a trap where the VR thing went on way too long and the rest of the plots had to suffer, and if the series was more episodes or supposed to be many more seasons, they could have done that. But, ultimately the Three Body VR game is not the point of the series so it was probably best to get it in, do its job, and get out.

Sounds like you'll enjoy the Chinese adaptation more than the Netflix version, it took it's time to explore all the concepts and ideas, Netflix version felt too rushed and tried to cramp too much into an 8 episode series, many things was oversimplified while in the books and the Chinese series they're very well explained.

I'm just going to say.... Don't let the VR aspect dissuade you. It was very much streamlined compared to the book. This book BTW won the Hugo Award which is the highest honor on the planet that a scifi author can win. And if you have a fraction of an idea of where this story is going you will be DESPERATE to see how they manage to adapt that. Having said that I will say that its very "academically" directed. Would have preferred someone like Villenue or Alex Garland directing this and just making it look that much more beautiful and artistic. Its a huge story, so it would be damn near impossible to do it justice, without it coming off a bit cacophonous, much like with Dune.

I could suspend disbelief in a lot of this show's concepts, but the one thing I couldn't stomach was Project Staircase. They're supposed to use their arsenal of nuclear bombs to propel the sail, right? But how did they accurately position those bombs supposedly light-years ahead of the sail? If they could do that already, couldn't they have just used that technology to transport whatever payload they wanted directly to the Sant-ti homeworld? The entire thought experiment just seems preposterous.

Yes, they threw much of the interpersonal stuff in, because the books are a visceral epic, characters are more or less just story devices. Which is great for nerds, but probably even harder for average viewers. The Series itself is also a hard nut to crack. Book one is a bit more grounded, and down to earth, but the whole series is more of a mega-scale "Foundation Size" cosmic epic on a universal scale. Literally, the main topics are not Earth, but life an the whole universe itself later on. Will be interesting, how they manage to change the tone. Humanity, and even the Trisolaris-Aliens are nothing more like bugs at this point.
PS: Not sure if there will be a reveal, what made the universe blink, since it has been revealed in the later episodes again. But that needed some connecting the dots, and extrapolation of what the technology we saw is capable of.

I liked it quite a bit but it's such a contrivance of a story. Namely that these aliens are sure smart for a species that seems incapable of abstract thought like 'fiction'. They call a 'story' a lie when they themselves say they can't lie but they f'n lie constantly. They thinks books are lies but they have no problem understanding the concept of an immersive simulation video game? THAT'S KIND OF WIERD.
Like it's super ironic that they say they can't coexist with us or trust us when they were the ones literally on ships coming to conquer us. It doesn't seem like that logic actually holds up.
But there's still a lot of great science fiction concepts in play so it gets a big pass for some of those contrivances.

I liked it but it is not perfect. There is some issues with the main characters all being important..because they are the main characters. Saul being recruited as a wallfacer needed more explanation that the cryptic explanation given here. It is like it was cryptic BECAUSE it was so unbelievable and they dont have a great explanation. And humans aiding the aliens after the "reveal" of what they wanted strained belief for me.
But the thing that stood out as great is playing with the ramifications of totally untrained and hurt people communicating with aliens. This story shows why that is a very bad idea. They basically might doom humanity due to hubris and selfishness. They nail this very well. As yes, the game stuff could have been better. I got it was a recruitment game, but the ways it showed how it did it did not ring true for me. Again, after the big reveal, I would not see it conceivably working anymore. The main "bad" person, a woman who kills for the aliens, also has a major fight NOT shown and we are just told it, which felt like a huge cheat.
But these nitpicks aside, it was very good and I recommend it. Acting was superb, the flashbacks really were well made and the plot was thrilling enough to see where it is going.

The tone feels off for a couple reasons. They removed a number of scenes from the book that served to not just help the reader conceptualize the science but it also went a long ways towards setting the uncertain, dreadful tone that lasts through all three books. Additionally, there is no Oxford Five, most of the main characters don't know each other prior to the story in the books. This screws up another part of the tone of the books where the story feels much more international, more about humanity than the cast of Friends.
I don't think they touch on it very heavily in the show but in the books, the game is also meant to be a form of propaganda to create sympathy for the alien invaders. They more allude to it than outright say it in the show.
For what its worth, the first book that most of the first season covers is largely regarded as more of a prologue to the actual story that takes place in the second and third books. I can understand them trying to rush through it and also kinda gotta hold out for the second season to truly tell if they do it justice.

The show is not bad, but does suffer from being unfocused. The narrative seems to want to be direct, to the point and complex (like a scientist would be), but then we get some character moments that don't seem to serve any purpose besides trying to gain or keep, less intelligent/cultured viewers.
Honestly, I ask: What was the purpose of the history that the navy guy's father told during their dinner with his girlfriend... Several minutes wasted there without, it seemed to me, no benefit.
Also, can someone explain to me how the VR headset bit makes any sense? So, SCIENTISTS get their hands on a out of this world piece of technology and the first, and ONLY thing that they do, is use it?? No tests, no attempt to inform others or trying to get an expert opinion... So f*** stupid.

The things you mention don’t follow. Not having well-written ribbons to tie at the end of a story has nothing to do with the story being “too intellectual”. Hardly any TV series or movie in the West is intellectual in the slightest. And I think it’d be disappointing if many people associate anything remotely brain-stimulating with “bad”. Entertainment is important, but it shouldn’t be an either-or: we shouldn’t promote complete anti-intellectualism.
