One of the reason why there's so many young bands in Japan is because of school "music clubs" (and as boys are more interested in sport, it's usually female dominated). Hanabie started in school as a Maximum The Hormone cover band, but soon started composing their own stuff. They are just over 20 now and already seasoned musicians.

Hanabie = Han-ah-bee-eh = #Harajukucore = 🔥🔥🔥🔥 Their album “Girl’s Reform Manifest” is still one of my favorites, they know how to blend styles and make transitions and layers work like no one else right now.
The OGs in this space are Aldious, and, as they have been around since 2008, there’s a lot of history and back catalog. All you really need to know is that their live performances are where they shine. Pick one. Love it. No one will watch though. 🙄
The very latest band to pop into consciousness are Hades with “Bring it on”. They are the band to watch right now.
I don’t know if you have found Nemophila yet, they just did a U.S. tour and are top 3 with LOVEBITES and Band-Maid at the moment. Dissension, Adabana or Oiran live would all be a good place to start.
My crush at the moment is a band called Lonesome_Blue who are a bit like LOVEBITES and Band-Maid had a love child - and they are woefully under appreciated. Check them out for a taste of a party metal disco rock pop extravaganza… when they aren’t just being second to none in the genre, which is also the title of their current album. 😬

And the journey continues - you're still just scratching the surface of the incredible Japanese female Rock/Metal scene... still have to check out Nemophila (Raitei or Dissension), Lovebites (Judgement Day), Gacharic Spin (I Wish I or Mindset).... and of course more Band Maid - Blooming, Dice, Freedom ( Live), Play (Live), Real Existence (Live)... and the video that saved the band from disbanding - Thrill...

In Japan, music class is mandatory up to Junior High. They usually have once or twice a week classes. Then in High School, it's not mandatory but students are highly encouraged to join after school club activities. If you watch many high school themed anime, you can not miss all the after-school club elements in anime. Naturally, most boys join sport clubs whereas girls join many other clubs including music clubs. Due to this fact, more girls go on to continue with music education or even going straight to being pro career after high school. And that's why there are so many amazing all girl pop/rock/hard rock/metal bands in Japan. They are usually highly skilled. For example, Misa, Akane and Kanami from Band-Maid were all in high school music clubs.

  • @TehPhysics

Nobody is ready for little *Yukina* (4' 10'') to blow their wig off with that growl. Though she be but little, she is fierce!
*Hanabie* (Ha-na-be-eh) mix metal, punk, rap, rock, pop, electronic, and whatever else they want, into their self-titled style called Harajuku-core. Named after the Harajuku district, which is known for it's cutting edge music and fashion. After watching the video, I'm sure you can see the influences.
    Hanabie are Yukina - clean/harsh vocals, Matsuri - vocals/guitar/composer, Hettsu - Bass/wardrobe design, Sae - drums/backing vocals.
Here's a few song suggestions to help you along.
'Reiwa Dating Apps Generation' about the dangers of disposable relationships created by dating apps. Lot of rap influence
'Pardon me, I have to go now' a critique of the office culture of Japan. Tradition instruments
'NEET GAME' = Not in Education, Employment, or Training. Chip tune and electronic elements
'L.C.G.' (Lollipop Candy Girls) is about the awkward transition from youth to adulthood. High energy pop influence

"Reiwa Dating App Generation", "NEET Game", "L.C.G." (Lollipop Candy Girl) (different drummer/old), "Pardon Me, I Have To Go Now", and "Envy" (different drummer/old) are all good songs no order to the list. Hanabie is said "Ha-Na-Bee-Ay" it means "cold flower(s)" and means a spring cold snap, Hanabi (how most English speakers pronounce the name) "Ha-Na-Bee" means "fire flower" or as we call them in the English speaking world fireworks. Most of Hanabie's songs talk about social/societal issues that affect women and more generally Japan. "We Love Sweets" is about how sugar is consumed in quantities that are dangerous to humans but we don't have any regulation on the consumption, and how it damages society. "Pardon Me, I Have To Go Now" is about how Japanese work culture is generally terrible, and the video adds in how hostile the workplace is for women in Japan (read terrible sexual harassment).

With respect to all bands around the world, if anyone is keeping the core of metal alive and kicking it's Japan these days.. From here is Maximum The Hormone, who have been around for a while in the relative comparison of contemporary J-metal/rock, but again come recommended as a band which enjoy going off the wall. Discovering all these kinds of bands has turned You Tube into a virtual version of pass the parcel, but it's a good thing because it helps form community and helps to get the word out where much of the mainstream media is sadly failing us, whether that's down to politics, distribution contracts or whatever the issue may be..

Hanabie ( think Canadian: Hanna - Be - Eh? ) were a Maximum the Hormone cover band before writing their own music. Their latest video is 'Pardon Me - I have to go now' is also nice. These girls have style!
But try Maximum The Hormone - they've been around for over 20 years and are HUGE - in Japan. They were big influence on Hanabie. They blend and bend music genre: metalcore, pop, rap, anime, there's nothing too jarring for MTH. Guitar, vocal Ryo is brother to sister Nao, the drummer.
'A.L.I.E.N.' starts as hardcore metal and then suddenly FUNK, then back to metalcore, and then? WTF? You WILL NOT BELIEVE IT.
'Yoshu Fukushu' start with the drummer sweeting singing a gentle, sweet song, then the SHTF and everything goes INSANE!

Get used to the surprises and god tier musicianship. J-Music bands have some of the most original and proficient musicians on the planet right now, and they are proof of just how lame and shitty Western corporate music has become. Japanese schools have strong music programs and don't seem to discriminate based on sex, which explains why it isn't unusual at all to see mixed bands where women are likely to play any instrument, or supremely talented all-girl bands like HANABIE and LOVEBITES.

I don't mean to be rude, and there's nothing wrong with it, but I find it so interesting that English native speakers don't even see that there is an "e" at the end of the word. I guess it's because of weird English spelling and loan words, they've just become used to ignoring certain letters. Or maybe it's because they so often insist on pronouncing "e" as "i." Regardless, I find it fascinating. (No shade on you, literally everybody does it).
