  • This is my review of the Hyke & Byke down sleeping bag. The one I chose is a 30 degree bag. I use a sleeping bag liner and found it very warm the few nights I was in it already. I plan on using this on the A.T during the late spring and early summer months where it can get as low as freezing still even in May! I think that this is a well made sleeping bag and appears to be everything the seller said it would be. One of the things I noticed is that the feathers do not fall out - many times cheaper down items use poky feathers that poke out of the material and they also do ont sew the seams tight enough to hold the feathers in place. This is NOT the case with this item. This is a $99 sleeping bag and it appears right now to be a fine inexpensive alternative to the 200 + 300 $ sleeping bags. I also liked the fact it weighs just 1.9 lbs - one of the lightest down bags I could locate - especially for the price!!!

      Thank you. I've got a follow up. Don't wash it. Mine really stared shedding feathers by year number two. I now own the same company, hyke and byke, elous, zero degree and it's of far better quality.

      Thanks a bunch! This may sound strange but I have actually been sleeping in it the better part of six months now; I have used a regular old washer and dryer to clean it and have had very very minimal feather loss. I will tell you, being someone who gets cold easy - when temps were 30's-40's I was comfy BUT I also used a tyvak bivy bag I made: 1 to keep it dry on wet nights and two to keep me extra super warm! AND I had the right sleeping pad (a thermal one). It's pretty damn awesome for $99!

    • @katiegrider
      @katiegrider 6 лет назад

      Agreed! I used mine in 30-40s and it was great! I'm super sensitive to cold too. The ONLY thing I'm not huge on is the plastic-y texture of the bag, but I'll just end up getting a liner and problem solved.

    I picked up the synthetic 0 degree version to check it out. I'm used to more expensive bags given the type of conditions I usually backpack in, but wanted to experiment.
    I tested it in my yard on a reasonably cold night. It seems average, not great. Insulation tends to clump leaving cold spots and could use more loft. Not bad as a shoulder season bag for the cost, but I will definitely be relying on my higher end gear for my environment. This one now lives on my bed for extra covers on cold nights.
    P.S....it is soft and cozy with room to curl up which is a plus cause I like to burrow into my bags when it's below freezing! Oh yeah, it has so far held up to my sled dogs bouncing around it, also good.⛄

    • @FloridaGirlAdventures
      @FloridaGirlAdventures  4 года назад +1

      Wow sled dogs! Brr must be cold. Yeah you need good gear. I liked this because I could afford it. I think this was the 30 degree. I now have the 0 degree version. Yes the feathers tend to go to one end over time. But it's nothing that can't be easily fixed. I have never had an ultra expensive sleeping bag to compare. This is my expensive sleeping bag at 100.

    I have this bag. Some people said that it smelled bad, I never had that problem. It's important to keep it unpacked to keep the down fluffy, don't store it in the compression sack. It doesn't look like much, some people complained about it being under filled, but this thing will keep you very warm. I was caught in the rain on a hike in Virginia, early September. I had to strip down and sleep naked in this thing, but I was toasty. Great bag for the price.

      H&B don't use responsibly sourced down, so, among other issues, down consistentsy is non-existant. You might get lucky with a batch of odor-free down...but, most likely, you'll get some stink. The ratio of down to feathers in these cheap chinese bags is also suspect.

    I just got mine. I was crazy enough to get the light blue. I can't believe how buttery soft it is. It's a great buy indeed! You mentioned it is 30 degrees. Is it Cresstone? Also I wonder if those loops help keep the hammock up using a paracord?

    • @FloridaGirlAdventures
      @FloridaGirlAdventures  4 года назад

      The loops I learned are for hanging it to dry (?) I have since moved on from the 30 degree. I spent a really wet spring on the trail and it was mildewed. I could not get the smell out of it. I did buy the 0 degree to replace it - I'm a Floridian and I get cold easy. I've used the 0 degree on a hot July FL night not to cover up but to sleep on top of. I also have a silk bag liner. You think it's soft heaven on it's own - ah so soft! Get silk it costs more but keeps you warmer and is ultra light.Ive had the 0 degree for almost 2 years now and I just washed it for the first time in my washer and had no problems drying the bag - no bad order after washing - this happens to well lived in trail gear. Im very pleased with my bag. OH and my 0 degree was bit by a bear - he bit all the way through the front of the tent into my thermarest and bag - he torn a two inch hole in the thermarest but only a small puncture in the sleeping bag. I repaired it with gear tape sandals good - no feather loose from this second bag - I do have to admit I remember waking up looking like I'd fought a chicken the night before in the 30 degree bag - lol. They say that's the problem with the cheaper bags - for the cost savings I'll look like a chicken.

      @FloridaGirlAdventures  5 лет назад

      I didn't know about the lifetime warranty. I've had this now almost two years and sleep in it most of the time, yes even at home. It's just that comfy to me. Issues I've had is lots of small feathers lost and when I did wash it, it seems to have lumped all the feathers in the head end. I'm thinking it's time to upgrade to the zero degree! Thanks for the view

      You know I have the tyvak bag! last year it was just a sheet of tyvak I had 'treated' meaning making it not crinkle when moved - this year I have sewn it into a bivy bag that I plan on putting my sleeping bag into or should the need arise and I have a feeling it will! I'm heading out tonight - videos of the AT and my misadventures to come!

      I still love the bag - I have slept in it for the better part of six months since I made this video. Washer, dryer, hanging it out - all have worked. I have owned down items in the past that feathers fell out of - this item does not seem to shed! Very minimal feather loss. I like the silky material BUT sleep alone... between this sleeping bag and your thermarest you'll be making some noise when you move around for sure! Scare the bears away!

    Not responsibly sourced down. "Live-plucked" down is the equivalent of rape...only these birds are plucked repeatedly. Even most inexpensive brands have a responsible down option. RDS down costs more, but your conscience will thank you (unless you dont have one...in which case, kick your pet in the face, just for the hell of it).

      Their website does say use responsibly sourced down.

    • @taradead
      @taradead 5 лет назад

      @@RevJosephWashburn The fact this is only vaguely mentioned in the FAQs makes question it's degree of validity. It's not traceable/certified RDS down (usually, a huge selling point), so the source could be anywhere and no one would be the wiser (other than the smell). Hopeing chinese down bags this inexpensive are 100% responsibly sourced down is pretty naive.

      When it comes to hiking gear, the lighter and smaller it is the higher the price. No one wants to lug a huge pack around while hiking, but you want to stay warm at night. Considering the size and the fact that it's down I'd say the price is worth it. I've had mine for a year and love it.
