      Find your channel was GREAT. I got really happy and started showing it to other friends that want to start camping.
      I'm form Brazil. Camping here isn't really big like in other countries and gear is extremely expensive bc of our broken economy.
      So me and my friends are always trolling at people camping but we never start bc it's just too expensive to buy gear and the cheap ones we found are usually total trash, which despite worsening the experience can also lead to life threatening problems.

    Wow! I, like you, would never suspected something from Teton Sports not to function at least to what they claim in saying add 20 to 30 degrees. Soon as i saw what they were using for fill, I kind of had my doubts. I'm also betting packability would be worse than the Katahdin. No mention of dwr is disturbing also. I like a bunch of Teton Sports stuff because it is usually very durable and does the job it is advertised to do really well. I really think they need to go back to the drawing board on this one. I don't use as much of their stuff as I used to due to upgrading gear to lighter, more packable, and more expensive gear. But, I do still have all of their gear I've used in the past. I also highly recommend their gear many times to people looking for quality gear on a budget. I think the only Teton Sports item I still use is that same pillow thanks to your video way back when. That 2 pillow system is going to be hard for someone to drag me away from. I really hope this bag is a one and done mistake they will hopefully recall and fix. I'm hoping this isn't a sign of Teton Sports products to come. I think i may have to take a look at some more of their gear now before I recommend them to others. Tgeir packs still seem solid. I know that pillow is good. Haven't checked out any of their newer tents. The older ones were pretty good for the money. Yeah, glad you looked at this one. Just had soneone asking me about some budget equipment this morning. Anyway, another great video as always. Looking forward to what you put out next!

      I was equally surprised at the poor performance of the Teton! I really wanted to like it because I like their company, but this one just wasn't it. I totally forgot to talk about packability. They H&B definitely does better in that department as well. The Teton isn't too much bigger, but I think that's partly because of the lack of insulation.
      And totally agree about their packs. They are solid and durable and I still like the two that I have. No holes or tears, and I have taken them through some intense bushwhacking! The pillow has lasted me for years at this point. Somehow this sleeping bag just doesn't live up to their usual quality I've experienced.

      Hey! Welcome aboard and thanks for subbing! sorry I completely forgot to include packability! I almost never use the stuff sacks. I just put it at the bottom of a pack liner with all my other stuff that HAS to stay dry (sleeping pad and pillow, bed time clothes, etc.). They pack up to a fairly similar size, but the Teton is a bit bigger (that batting just doesn't pack as well as the synthetic down). I like that the H&B stuff sack is a little longer and thinner than most, because then it's easy to squeeze it into the bottom of your bag without wasted space in the corners. The Teton bag is heavy (twice as heavy as the H&B bag!) because of the thick material and heavy clips for compression. I'd say the H&B wins in packability as well!

    Even better than either is a US military surplus intermediate cold bag. You can pick these up all day long for $50 - $100 depending on condition. I paid a whopping $2.75 for mine at a thrift store. They're USA made, nice and roomy, very durable, have an overstuffed footbox and a claimed temperature rating from 35 to -10. They don't use generic poly batting or some sketchy propriety stuff which is probably just generic batting, either. They use Primaloft, an excellent synthetic that was designed for the military and is also good enough for high end civilian gear companies like Nemo. Now, I would not trust the bag to keep me warm at -10 and probably not at 0, but I have used mine down to a solid 20 and with a decent thermal base layer and a 3.8R pad it keeps me toasty warm. Add a good quality thermal liner and you're potentially looking at a bag that's comfort rated down to 0 or lower. They're filled equally on the top and bottom, too, so you can flip it over and let the hood drape over your head, which traps a lot of heat and as you probably know keeping your head warm goes a long way toward keeping your entire body warm.
    On the subject of Teton, they've taken hits on some of their sleeping bags before and they've had the decency to acknowledge that they weren't performing as advertised. My gut tells me they're using a bad manufacturer that is using whatever they have on hand and in whatever quantities they feel like stuffing in them on that particular day. Chinese low end manufacturers are notorious for doing this kind of crap and I assume that's where they're being made.

    • @DoseofDirt
      @DoseofDirt  5 месяцев назад +1

      Alright, I have to try to find one of these surplus bags. It's something I hadn't even thought about since I don't have a surplus place close to me. i'm going to have to try to track one down.
      I think you're probably right about Teton. It's unfortunate, because I think they are a good company making good stuff. Just not always consistent.

    • @Im_With_Stupid
      @Im_With_Stupid 5 месяцев назад

      @@DoseofDirt Ebay and Amazon have plenty of surplus bags in various conditions. Unless you buy the whole system you have to make sure what you are buying is the intermediate cold bag, which is the actual sleeping bag, and not the patrol bag, which is just an inner liner/summer bag. How warm it will be will probably depend on how much it's been compressed and kicked around. The one I have was definitely used when I got it, but was still in great condition, still really lofty and warm. I'm sure there's some out there that are completely worn out, though. One of the best things about this bag is the zipper. It's big and smooth and doesn't get snagged easily and to get out of it all you have to do is undo the Velcro tab at the top and pull the two sides apart and it rips right open.
      I think Teton is doing the best they can to remain competitive and probably not cutting corners themselves, but I bet the factories they're using are.

    The design and performance of the Altos is somewhat surprising to me. I bought a Teton Sports Cobalt sleeping bag for car camping a few years back. It weighs just shy of 3.5lbs with the stuff sack and has a stated temperature rating of "30-60F". That temp rating is obviously a bit suspicious, but I've actually slept in it down to 36 degrees just wearing thin base layers and a long sleeved t shirt and stayed completely warm. Granted, I am a warm sleeper, but I was surprised by how well it performed. As far as temp ratings go, the Cobalt seemed to underpromise and overdeliver, while the Altos seems to overpromise and underdeliver, which is puzzling. It really does make me wonder if there was a manufacturing defect and some of the insulation in your Altos was left out. It may be worth contacting Teton Sports to see what they say.

      You caught me! Ha! So when i did the test (as you can see in the b-roll) I had the CCF below the air mattress. That's how I've done it for a long time. But then a week later I tested some quilts and decided to try the CCF on top of the air mattress, and I actually liked that a lot more. It seemed warmer and definitely felt more comfortable to me. But I need to figure out a way to try to test the CFF on top of vs below the air mattress.
      I think because I had tested the quilts that way and liked it, I wasn't thinking when I put my sleep system together to shoot the video. Oops!

    I have a lot of experience sleeping outside, former US army ranger...now retired. Very odd that you talk about weight yet choose synthetic... down is warmer per ounce especially goose down. The price point for goose is always higher its natural material so to start off its just a very odd combination. Over the dozens of bags I have used over the years I can say on avg always expect a 20 degree difference in temp rating from a manufacturer. My advice always get the warmest sleeping bag you can afford...when you are on a hunt in the high country 2lbs extra isn't going to kill you but the weather could get you injured.....winter camping is expensive and there is always going to be a lot more weight and equipment....the more money you spend the warmer you will be....I use a Marmot CWM bag -40 degrees... I use a exped dur8 r factor 7.9 and a classic ridge rest closed cell I use a US army wool blanket on the floor of my tent.also for warmth.... I climbed denali 4 yrs ago with this set up and was actually warm so i had to vent some nights......

      Totally agree about getting the best bag you can afford. No one should be taking gear out in conditions it isn't suited for, no matter what their budget is. That may mean for some that winter backpacking is just off the table for now, and that's alright. I'm hoping videos like this one helps to find affordable options for the right conditions.
