Yes, I enjoy watching RUclipsrs like you because it helps me find those hidden gem games or upcoming games and I love collecting physical copies of Nintendo Switch games I'm not really a fan of Digital games unless they're being sold for 60 percent off or higher.
I love your hidden gems videos bro ! You have probably turned on to more games in the last year than any other channel. Some real bangers like Souldiers, Smelter , Anno Mutationem, Dead or School, Lost Ruins, Evil Tonight , Viviette, Jack Move and probably more ♥️ You might want to check out some of these lesser known gems like Yohane The Parhelion - Blaze in the Deep Blue , Samurai Maiden , Little Witch Nobetta , Marchen Forest, Love Esquire , Yokus Island Express and I am playing Umbraclaw from Inticreates now.
Pardon me, I'm a little confused on Grim Guardians. If it's like the old school classic Castlevania games, is it level based? If so then it shouldn't be classified as a Metroidvania, right?
You are correct, it is not technically a Metroidvania, it falls into that nebulous '2D Action Platformer' genre which is the progenitor of Metroidvanias.
I though Overlord was PC only. Thanks for bringing it to my attention, ive now wishlisted on the eshop. I am an Overlord fan but ive only watched one season so far.
I also didn't know. I love the Switch, but the eShop is easily my most hated storefront ever. The filter and search functions are barely functional, and trying to find something just by browsing is borderline torture as you have to scroll through pages worth of cheap hentai puzzlers and dating sims, PS1 era 3d horror games, and utility apps.
that reminds me... if you have battle chef brigade the main character of the vagrant/sword of the vagrant cameos as a judge, and i think one of the chefs you can play as cameos in the vagrant...
Love your videos. I am a physical game collector. Please put if its available physically. Sometimes you do mention it. Keep up the great work! thanks for all your recommendations
Played Sword of the Vagrant not long ago on your prior recommendation when the physical versions came out and while it’s not a flawless game it absolutely begs for a sequel, and I really want one. Definitely need to also get into the Lodoss War franchise myself.
Wow! Excellent video my buddy! 😁🩵👏🎉 Many of the Metroidvanias in the list are very cool! Infernax, Sword of the Vagrant and Xenon Valkyrie+ are the standouts. Although, Albedo from Overlord is a favorite character of mine 😂 My personal inclusion would be ICONOCLASTS ❤ Platform shooter with metroidvania elements. Its a very pretty one with deep story and characters, so check it out 😁👍 A Metroidvania question for a metroidvania video 😊🏃 What's your favorite unique gimmick mechanism in a metroidvania game? Mine is when you (as Lt. Kai Tana) can phase through a shielded enemy in Velocity 2X, appear behind them and deactivate their shields.
Thanks so much for the recommendation! I have got to get around to iconoclasts. Thanks for the reminder. I love this question! This might not be the most original question but when i was younger the X parasyte samus suit from Fusion was a terrifying gimmick. How it'd just show up and chase you and you'd have to run and hide was mind blowing and terrifying haha. But fantastic pick and Velocity is such a flippin incredible game. Needs to come to switch already!
@@HallowedBeThyGame Oooo, true, the question seemed a bit commonplace but I'd loved your answer! I just read about Metroid Fusion 😅🩵 That Parasyte X suit must have been very unsettling. I wish Velocity made it's way to the Switch (like a few more games I have in mind...*coughLost Dimensioncough*) Excellent choices there my buddy Ren!Picking up a few games this month, Bo Path of the Teal Lotus looks very promising! 😁🩵 Looking forward to your next amazing video!
I'm looking for more Metroidvanias with RPG-type leveling & gear systems, aka "Igavania"-likes. I've already played/beaten The Vagrant, Deedlit, & Luna Nights from this list, along with (other good RPG-Metroidvanias): Bloodstained, Afterimage, Astlibra, Dust, Ender Lilies, both HunterX games, Lost Epic, & Timespinner. Also recently bought but not played Vigil & Minoria as well. Any others in that vein? Symphony of the Night isn't available on PC (or I would have played it, tried on mobile but touch screen controls are trash for Metroidvanias).
So I'll add some to your list. 1. Outer Wilds. Because I love Outer Wilds, I add it to every list. You think it's not metroidvania? Bruh. It's a labyrinth game - where all the doors are locked only by your lack of knowledge. Games I've beaten that should be tried by afficianados of the genre: 2. Yoku Island Express - pinball metroidvania. Extremely satisfying gameplay. No other game like it. 2. Owlboy - Good game. Great story. Gutpuncher. 2. Monster boy and the Cursed Kingdom: Does everything well. Incredible Soundtrack. Best on this list for music. 2. Cat Maze. Oddly competent and oddly compelling story. Super hidden gem. 2. Rebel Transmute - game has no tutorials, and equipment will synergize in strange ways to get to places maybe(?) before the game intends? Metroid NES-like. Definitely a brain tickler. Might be polarizing, since it's not user-friendly. 2. Teslagrad - Magnet based castlevania puzzler. Not terribly long. Plays really well. Has challenge rooms if you want to cut your teeth. Also a sequel I haven't tried. 2. Carrion - You're the monster, and you're constantly evolving. Can you escape the testing facility where the humans imprisoned you. Power fantasy. Only issue is that there's no map, so you'll need to have your memories in good shape. 2. The Mummy Remastered: Extremely effective metroid-style RPG. Games I'm working on that I'm diggin' 3. Afterimage. Game is huge, bruh. 3. Rusted Moss: There's a hook-shot into swinging mechanic, but I'm not far enough to call it great. Feels interesting though. 3. Souldiers: Tough as nails combat game. Very lengthy. Three playthroughs with different styles, and I'm still on the first. Games too popular to list but aren't Hollow Knight 4. Prince of Persia: Broken Crown. Maybe the best Metroidvania I've ever played. Satisfying combat. 4. Animal Well. Unusual objects for progress, with neat (intended) exploits. 4. VVVVV. Not a true metroidvania since you can accomplish the dungeons in any order. Has to be mentioned. True Classic. 4. Shantae and the pirates curse - Really funny game - even though the humor is childish. Is Shantae too well known to be a hidden gem? I've only played the one, but I loved it. 4. The Messenger. You might think it's not Metroidvania. and I'd say that, if you like Ninja Gaiden, you should play it and not ask any more questions. Games that are competent: 5. Alwa's Awakening. NES style metroidvania that - because of its bubble wand, has a lot of interesting movement that might not have been intended. 5. Super Skelemania. Short lived. Does the job well. good movement. 5. Astronite: a short but challenging black and white metroidvania. 5. Timespinner. I remember thinking this was a super good game, but for some reason, I can't remember too much about it. 5. Minoria: Makers of Momodora. Fine game. Nothing complicated. Don't touch. Micetopia: unfinished game. Anyway, I'll stop here.
Have played most of these except Infernax and Tohou. Apparently Tohou is insanely well loved. As always man love the obscure takes. As far as to see more vids like this? Just keep doing your thing man, you've always had a gift for games that aren't always so main stream. I will be a bit biased here and say metroidvanias are just sooo over saturated.. sure jrpgs could be but.. idk I feel like metroidvanias are a dime a dozen these days and you really gotta pick and choose, more so than jrpgs.
I played far into tohou but I think I stopped shortly before the end. I did play and 100% their deedlit in wonder labyrinth game. Loved it. I'm not a youtuber by any means but I actually made a video of me fighting the bosses and getting the final boss rush achievement.
Playing Tevi and Ys VIII concurrently, and boy is that Ys soundtrack a banger! Gonna check out lost ruins and gal guardians next. Some of these recently came out physically as well, so the prices are relatively low for now (~30-35 USD).
I have Swords of the Vangrant, Grimm Guardians and Deedlit. These are indeed true gems. I've also Overlord still boxed and Luna Night on its way to my home. Can't wait to play them. Speaking of the last one, from the same Touhou universe, may I advise you 2 other gems? The 2 Koumajou games. Absolutely amazing Symphony of the Night esthetic × with bullet hell
I very much enjoy Metroidvanias, but I'm starting to notice the fatigue set in. Many of the latest newcomers to the genre try to go after Hollow Knight and Blasphemous - Souls-like combat and high difficulty, and while I don't mind that, I miss the ones that were closer to Metroid than Vania, with greater emphasis on exploration than challenge. But I also have a recommendation that you might not have on your radar yet: Transiruby. It's a pixel-style Metroidvania that really emphasizes exploration and hidden secrets, while still providing some tough fights. It becomes a tad excessive with the backtracking at times, but I still think it's a lot of fun.
Astlibra is a neat one that blends in some spectacle fighter elements, Frontier Hunter: Erza’s Wheel of Fortune is super interesting if you’re down to put up with a little jank, and while I’d say the gameplay is only serviceable while the story is what’s excellent I cannot reccomend Dungeon Munchies enough (as I mentioned in one of your recent hidden gems vids). Those are additional suggestions though, cause I agree most of your list is solid (I consider Grim Guardians hella over-rated, but have always appreciated you singing the praises of Vagrant as someone else who groundfloored that and has always felt people were missing out, and I’ve never heard anyone but me know Rabi or Lost Ruins).
After Metroid Dread and Blasphemous 2... hard to find another metroidvania better than those 2, i played many but i throw em because didnt catch my attention at all... i was hyped for Last Faith but it was a complete disappointment... i better keep waiting for HK silksong
You should change the headline. 10(remove Inferna and A robot) Metroidvanias to play if you like Japan and don't care about the metroidvania aspects of the game. Some great games on your list but several of them are really weak in their metroidvania elements.
Did a robot named fight get a massive overhaul at some point? I played it years ago and it was, well mostly just not for me but also kind of tepid? It had cool stuff but nothing like all the action in that trailer. Calling a bullet-hell adjacent game that is also "the most difficult in this list" a game for everyone doesn't _have_ to be incorrect, but I think that part of the script could have cooked longer 😂 Sword of the Vagrant deserves more hype than it gets, thanks for plugging such a fun game. Arranging special moves and finding hidden treasure felt really good, even moreso than similar games.
Ugh, bullet hell/storm games and roguelike/roguelite games, two of my least favorite genres. The others on the list is fine, but any that are in either of those two categories puts me off. Too bad, the characters in Tevi, especially the one used in the thumbnail, looks great, but it being a bullet hell/storm turned me away.
I checked my dekudeals wishlist for all the games from this video that I was interested in...yup...they are all already on there, lol. Guess my deep dives have been deeper than I thought.
I have played the OVERLORD game and i wouldn't recommend it. It is a really basic one, the mechanics are rough and the game crashed once ir twice for me, some bugs and glitches. The level design is what ruined it for me, it is bad. The story although is a good perspective on what could've happened, i don't think people are missing out on anything with this one. If you're intereste i would absolutely recommend to look up some gameplay, cause (and i say this because i wanted to like the game) it is bad. I do feel like i wasted my money on this one and i would like to give a heads up to other people that are interested, cause it wasn't that fun and the combat and everything is not that great. This game was put on this list against some of the best metroidvanias there is, but the OVERLORD one is one i would not recommend.
Infernax (the well known game) is the only one I actually didn't know about. I'm not entirely sure what that means about me, but I do enjoy these videos since if nothing else it validates most of my Switch library and my gaming tastes in general. But yeah, Tevi, everyone should buy Tevi. Its one of those games people will tell you about 10 years from now, when all the physical copies are gone and it's inevitably delisted from the digital stores, and you'll kick yourself for not buying it because it's 200 bucks suddenly.
Not clear on how obscure you consider obscure. I knew almost all of these and see them on lists all the time. As such, I'm going to propose Astalon and Afterimage.
Hey man. Nice content, you seem to be interacting with your viewers a lot during your video, asking about what we like etc so I decided to send a comment. First of all, hidden gem videos are always a plus! I woud personally love more RPG and adventure game recommendations, pixel art and also 3D as well. Hope you get a lot of success in your channel. Take care man 🎉
This is a good list of games of the game are 2D but they ate really fun and the story from the games are really good as well. Looking forward to see more listing of this games. Some might my childhood game.
Hey Ren. Love your content. I was just looking for Grim Guardians: Demon Purge on my PS4 and what popped up was Gal Guardians: Demon Purge. Did they just name it differently for the PS or something? Thanks for the list of hidden gems.
Metroidvanias is not really a genre that I go towards to, but I haven't played enough of them so who knows? Of course I've played Symphony of the Night but besides that, not that much. From your list, I only have 2: Lodoss Wars and Dead School but I haven't played them yet. I also bought the DS Castlevania Trilogy since they're similar to Symphony but again, not played yet! Too many games, not enough time lol! Great video and keep up the good work!
Grim Guardians (aka Gal Guardians) is fantastic, with my son we went through it twice. For similar coop I can also recommend Timespinner, Bloodstained: Curse of the Moon 2, Astral Ascent. For other coop games , but different genre: Black Future '88 , Huntdown, Broforce - masterpieces!
I recently played, and reviewed, Tales of Kenzera Zau. It had some flaws but a really emotional and moving story. It's a short little metroidvania that I think more people should check out. It's also cheap at like $15
I think part of the reason escape from nazarick isn’t talked about much is that the playable character isn’t a hero, she is a psychopath who kills for fun ( spoilers for the anime ) and was killed by Einz because of what she did to a party he was a part of.
Only one id immediately add is Monster Sanctuary. Loved, loved that gane. I 100% the base game and im always thinking about a revisit. Plus i know they released some kind of free(?) expansion.
Metroidvanias are my favorite genre to buy play but never finish 😅 I still have like half the ones you mentioned so maybe I need to buy the other half, anyways if you make a second list as and odd ball you could include ElecHead 👀
Want to see more genre specific lists? Like and sub for more!
Not on metroidvanais no xD

On STEAM it is listed as Gal Guardians: Demon Purge
My bad I always forget they changed the name
Thanks for the list! I love Metroidvanias and never heard of a lot of these. Gonna pick up Dead or School and The Vagrant.
Excellent! Hope you enjoy them!
Take care man 🎉
Thanks for the feedback!
Absolutely do more, and even expand genres like 3D platformers, beat em ups, etc
Thanks for letting me know!
No Ghost Song or Laika?
I love the legend of the dragoon menu theme you put as one of the background music
My favorite menu music of all time!
More Switch physical hidden gems please!
More to come!
This is a good list of games of the game are 2D but they ate really fun and the story from the games are really good as well. Looking forward to see more listing of this games. Some might my childhood game.
So happy you enjoyed, more to come!
Hey Ren. Love your content. I was just looking for Grim Guardians: Demon Purge on my PS4 and what popped up was Gal Guardians: Demon Purge. Did they just name it differently for the PS or something? Thanks for the list of hidden gems.
Yeah sorry I forgot the name change and I continue to spell it wrong 😑 my bad

@@HallowedBeThyGame Nah, it's cool. I just wanted to make sure. Looks like a sweet game. Thanks for letting me know.
Thanks.
Hell yeah Sunshine Coastline
The absolute banger 🔥
Grim Guardians mention! Poggy!!!
@@laxur1312 it's so good!
It's also cheap at like $15
I’ve been playing Dandara recently, don’t know if you have played it is not a recent game and it is pretty good will recommend
I've never heard of this, thanks for letting me know!
@@HallowedBeThyGamecheck it out, it has an unconventional way of movement, is not the typical run and jump.
@@HallowedBeThyGameis on sale right now on Switch, is fun and it has an unconventional way of movement, is not the typical run and jump
I think part of the reason escape from nazarick isn’t talked about much is that the playable character isn’t a hero, she is a psychopath who kills for fun ( spoilers for the anime ) and was killed by Einz because of what she did to a party he was a part of.
Loving the Ys 8 soundtrack playing in background 👌
It was announced Rabi Ribi was going to get a physical release on Switch, but no English at the moment.
Hi!. Thanks for your recommendations, a lot of jewels here 🤩👌
Glad you like them!
Ender Lilies
Have you tried rabi rabi?
I have! and I love it ;)
LFG!!!! 😍
I'd add Kunai on this list. You play as a cute tablet swinging from left and right with two kunai. You're also armed with a katana.
xenon valkyrie was indeed pretty fun to play.
More please.
More to come!
Perfect!
Thanks! Was hoping you all would enjoy some metroidvanias!
I definitely would like to see more videos like this one.
HOB is an absolute gem. Amazing world design to explore, with really satisfying character development and gameplay
@@stuartmccrea yea
Only one id immediately add is Monster Sanctuary. Loved, loved that gane. I 100% the base game and im always thinking about a revisit. Plus i know they released some kind of free(?) expansion.
Ooo I'll have to check this on out, thanks!
Metroidvanias are my favorite genre to buy play but never finish 😅 I still have like half the ones you mentioned so maybe I need to buy the other half, anyways if you make a second list as and odd ball you could include ElecHead 👀
I'll be sure to check it out!
Just discovered the physical version of lost ruin thanks to you bro. Thank you.
Glad I could help
such adorable games on this list! I gotta play "Lost Ruins"
It's so good!
I love watching hidden gems videos especially if they got a physical release and metroidvanias are one of game genres
Metroidvania fans are def eating well
I’m really liking this type of video. Tevi is so good!
I'm glad! Thanks for the feedback!
Great video!
Thanks!
Deedlit in Wonder Labyrinth is *so* good. I recommend it every opportunity I get.
