- Brisbane Bears vs Essendon Bombers - 1996 Qualifying Final, Friday 6th September 1996. With Michael Voss, Justin Leppitsch, and Shaun Hart in action for the Bears, and James Hird, Gary O'Donnell and Gavin Wanganeen battling for the Bombers.
Attendance: 21,964 at The Gabba.
Fun fact: No less than 9 of the 42 players in this match would go on to coach at least one AFL game including (as of 2024) four current senior coaches (McRae, Chris Scott, Voss and Hardwick). The others are Merrett, Leppitsch, Hird, O'Donnell and Mark Harvey.
Thank you so much for all these uploads today (and over the months and years) MR! I was a Bears fan as a child but being born in 1990 don't remember a great deal of it first-hand... these are so nostalgic
victorytilidie i will never forget fitzroy's last game in melbourne. 60000 watched them get killed by 151 points. i was 10 at the time and a mad collingwood fan (still am) i do understand why a lot of fitzroy fans could not get in to the new brisbane lions.
It turned out Essendon had equal reason to celebrate this, the following week they were awarded a "home" final at the MCG against West Coast due to policy of one final to be at least played at the MCG.
