Some also suggest that Cobb's wedding ring wasn't his totem but rather a representation of his guilt over what he felt was his role wife's death. Hence why he only has it on in the dream.
@@LiteWeightReacting “When I got the script of Inception, I was a bit puzzled by it,” Caine said. “And I said to [Nolan], ‘I don’t understand where the dream is.’ I said, ‘When is it the dream and when is it reality?’ He said, ‘Well, when you’re in the scene, it’s reality.’ So get that - if I’m in it, it’s reality. If I’m not in it, it’s a dream.” However later Nolan stated Cobb doesn`t care. It is for intellectual ambiguity for the audience.
Yes. It’s as if Nolan has a degree in psychotherapy. There is so much processing of guilt and loss written into the construct of the characters. This movie gets better and better the more you watch it. One of my all time favorites.
Ariadne is the person that gives the hero Theseus a method to get out of the labyrinth (using a spool of thread to backtrack your way to the entrance). Figuratively, that's her role in the job. The first thing Cobb asks her is to design a maze.
To add to that, the spool of thread Ariadne’s gives in the myth is red. And you’ll notice, in the movie, red is constantly a part of Ariadne’s wardrobe.
"The first thing Cobb asks her is to design a maze" That would make her Daedalus, not Ariadne. Right myth, wrong character. All Ariadne does in the myth is as you see give Theseus the thread to leave a trail that can lead him back to the entrance of the labyrinth. Daedalus was the genius that actually created the labyrinth itself. You could say that Michael Caine's character was Daedalus was equivalent to Daedalus as the one to teach Cobb how to teach mazes and how to navigate the mid, and as his son in the film Cobb becomes Ikaros (Icarus in Latin) who flew too close to the sun.
You’re absolutely right about the final scene. It’s actually something took me multiple watches to realise. The important thing isn’t whether or not the top is going to stop spinning. The important thing is that Cobb walked away to be with his kids before he could find out. He doesn’t care whether he’s dreaming or not. He’s just content.
Indeed. It took me a while on that one as well. I kept going over it in my head, "was it going to fall, no, yes? still dreaming?" Then I finally realized that it didn't matter, what mattered was the kids and the happiness. Really well done by Nolan as usual.
Yep correct, and Nolan said this to Gamerant/HappySad podcast: The Oppenheimer director revealed that everyone is missing the bigger picture. ...According to Nolan, Cobb doesn't care if he's still in a dream. "I went through a phase where I was asked that a lot," Nolan continues. "I think it was Emma Thomas who pointed out the correct answer, Which is Leo's character... the point of the shot is the character doesn't care at that point. It's not a question I comfortably answer." Nolan added, "There is a nihilistic view of that ending, right? But also, he's moved on and is with his kids"
Others probably mentioned but Christopher Nolan worked on the script for nearly 10 years to tell this story. Really an incredible piece of work! Also I have to say it's a really precious thing when someone opens up to all us strangers like you did. Really special. Always be you and never feel pressured to be any different.
My interpretation of the ending is this: By focusing on the totem in the last shot and cutting to black as soon as it wobbles, Christopher Nolan is performing INCEPTION on the audience by planting an idea that it isn’t real, even though it is real. Brilliant writing!
Actually, when he wrote it, it was reality whenever Michael Caine was in the scene. But later on he waffled and decided he liked the idea that it’s not definitive one c way or the other. Kind of like the end of [spoiler below] Total Recall. You never know if the events are real or false implanted memories.
I was gonna write this in the comments exactly and deleted it. He does this exactly metaphorical emphasis in The Dark Knight, The Prestige, Tenet, and Oppenheimer as well. He highlights the theme or title of the movie in several ways in the last scene. @@LiteWeightReacting
The wake up on the plane at the end is such a beautiful scene. And most of all...Saito, waking up immediately grabs the phone to honor a deal he made a lifetime ago.
It's amazing that you are able to feel all the emotions while simultaneously also catching so many small intricacies of the plot. It took me multiple viewings to realize that Cobb wears his wedding ring in the dreams. And then some more viewings to understand that he would stop wearing the ring in his dreams after letting go of his wife. And then a couple more viewings to finally come to the conclusion that the entire point of the last scene was that Cobb turns away from the spinning top (instead of waiting for it to topple with a gun in his hand) because he accepts that he is where he wants to be. He embraces reality instead of chasing it. Spotting all that in your first viewing is incredible! Good job!
Thank you!! I had so much fun with this. I was really nervous for this one cus I felt like there was a lot of pressure to try and follow the best I could so I was really trying to find the bread crumbs!
They were on wires in the hallway scene and the entire set was designed so it could rotate around them! The practical effects in Nolan's movies are something else!
I think they weren't on wires in the first fight scene in the hallway. It was in a jig that rotated and rolled while the actors were free to move. I think they only got onto wires when Yusuf's van was in free fall and they needed to float
@@yaseen157 Yeah, I think you're right... I just re-watched some of the BTS footage and it seems Joe and the stunt performers - at least for the most part - "just" use coordination and gravity to move around... which makes it even more impressive! 🤯
I lost my son when he was a baby. Seeing you get emotional whenever children are on-screen and/or are in danger, always makes my heart hurt and brings tears to my eyes. The feeling from that loss never goes away. But it makes me happy seeing people with their children and not feeling the same way.
I’m sorry to hear about your son. I truly cannot imagine the grief you must have been through and continue to go through because I know that love never goes away. Sending lots of love!
@@LiteWeightReactingI appreciate you. I lost him over 10 years ago and I still think about him everyday. However, doing things I enjoy that can distract me (like watching your reactions and videogaming) really helps me. So thank you for your hard work and dedication to your channels. I'm sure I'm not the only one they help.
I love that Nolan makes complex, intelligent films and expects the audience to follow wherever the story leads. Not only that, but that they're successful.
Like many people already said, the wedding ring is an absurdly astute observation for a 1st time watch. Back in the day when it came out, people were catching it on their 3rd watch and it soon became "the hack" everyone was trying to tell their friends about and appear real smart. Great reaction Teegan, keep it going! Couple of fun facts others maybe haven't mentioned yet: - during the main part of the hallway fight they didn't have wires, the actors had to time their movements perfectly while the entire set rotated, otherwise they would fall from the "ceiling" to the "floor" - the water exploding in from the sides at the beginning of the dream was all real, they used cannons - Nolan worked on the script for 10 years, on and off - Nolan got the initial idea when during college he had to wake up earlier to get a free breakfast and then went back to his dorm to sleep again, and started experiencing lucid dreaming and becoming self-aware; Inception was his idea of a Bond-ish movie with that concept at its core - Nolan wrote the part of Cobb with Leo in mind I could go on but I won't, kudos if you got to this part 😆👋🏻
Wow! Loved all the little facts about the movie! Thanks for sharing. Also, to be fair, I feel like women always notice wedding rings haha it’s like a gift! 🤣
I hope you read this because I feel strongly about this. I have been following you for a while now and specifically since this year, I've noticed your growth. I'm also following your bloodborne play-through with great enjoyment in which you are really making leaps in your self-confidence and making me jealous because you are waaaaay better at the game than I am. So imagine my disappointment when you enter this movie putting yourself down and saying you maybe 'will never fully grasp it'. HOWEVER: imagine my utter glee when you end up to be one of the very very few people (not including myself) that get the thing with the wedding-ring from THE VERY FIRST WATCH!!! All the while understanding the emotional gravity of this movie and realising what is important (for example about Cobb choosing to accept HIS reality). So I just wanted to say: you are an amazing human being! I love your reactions - and your gameplay - every time! I admire that you are so in touch with yourself and not afraid to ruin your make-up (as if we care about a little smushed mascara) reacting to truly profound and emotional events in these stories, especially when they hit close to home. I imagine my little tangent doesn't carry that much weight, being a stranger on the internet and all, but I really really hope you read this and take it as a sign that you are doing so well! You are one of the most intelligent people I've seen here on YT, both intellectualyl and more importantly imo: emotionally! I hope me and all of your community get to see much more of your work going forward. You are amazing and you leave me in awe with each of your videos! So keep doing you, hope to see you again!
Hi! This really made my day. Reading comments like this really is The difference between having a “good” day as a creator or a “bad” one. I appreciate the heck out of you!
I love how impactful these movies are having on you. Your becoming a true Nolan disciple. T struggle to understand parts of this movie. but the metaphysical conversation about 'what is reality' always intrigues me. And I never noticed the thing about the ring, great eye for detail!!
@@LiteWeightReacting He always seems to outdo himself with each release somehow. A true master of his art. By the way, any girl who loves Christopher Nolan movies is all right with me! My wife got halfway through Inception and went to bed because she couldn't keep up. Her loss.
I love that you feel the movie so much. It is rare I find others who feel movies to the depth that I do and it's much appreciated. I'll always be looking forward to your reactions. You got a sub for sure! Keep being you, it takes a strong person to feel so deeply.
Aww thanks 😊 You’ve definitely found the right place for heartfelt reactions and I’m super stoked to have you! Next video will be up on February 21st and it’s The Dark Knight!
Cool think about Ariadne is that she was named after the daughter of Minos in Greek mythology. In one story, Minos actually has Ariadne take control of a labyrinth. In the movie, the labyrinth that Ariadne draws for Cobb’s test is almost identical to paintings of the ancient labyrinth.
About the ending... Saito touched the totem in limbo which defeats its purpose right before they last woke up, it is also not Cobb's totem it's Mal's. Cobb's totem is his ring which is visible in the dream but not in reality. The ring was not on him when they went to sleep on the plane and it wasn't there when they woke up in the plane. A running theory is that Cobb is actually Nolan, Cobb is the director, set designer (Ellen Page) and an actor (Tom Hardy), Mal (meaning bad in some languages) as the bad guy, Cillian Murphy's character represents the audience (us) who must have the idea planted into their heads and accept it (The last scene is believed to be an inception attempt by Nolan about Cobb (himself). @@LiteWeightReacting
It’s amazing you picked up on Cobb’s wedding ring on your first watch, that it’s on when he’s supposedly in the real world, how he’s not wearing it when he’s dreaming. Cobb’s wedding ring is the audience’s totem. If you pause the movie when Cobb hands his passport to the man in customs, you can see Cobb is wearing his ring. However, even if the top falls in the final scene, it’s still possible Cobb is dreaming because he told Ariadne how Mal’s totem works so any architect could design a dream where a projected top falls. So Cobb’s wedding ring totem could be a misdirection by Nolan. Bottom line is that, as you pointed out, Cobb doesn’t care to check whether the top falls or not. He’s happy to see his children’s faces and has let go of the guilt over what he did to Mal. Yet, don’t forget the last line of the film by Cobb’s son James. He says “Look what we’ve been building…we’re building a house on a cliff.” This line likely refers to Saito’s Japanese Castle House in Limbo that was built on a cliff. So Cobb could be projecting everything, every character, and every line in the film…that it’s one giant dream from the beginning of the film to the end in Cobb’s mind to rid himself of the guilt he feels - there are many hidden clues in the film that lend to this charitable interpretation that “it’s all a dream.”
Hope Cilian Murphy takes the Oscar for best actor this year. Dude has quietly been one of the best actors in Hollywood for years and deserve the recognition.
Great reaction! Ugh I love this movie so much. It was the first Nolan movie I watched and led me down a Chris Nolan movie marathon lol. I ended up liking every single one of his movies and he’s my favourite director honestly. The Prestige is another one of his that’s just absolutely brilliant. A psychological thriller starring Hugh Jackman and Christian Bale as 19th century stage magicians. Highly recommend!
@@LiteWeightReacting So glad you're going to hit "The Prestige". Keep the Kleenexes close by. If you want to see Nolan mastering the building of tension watch his version of "Dunkirk". The music in that movie is amazing. And then there's "Tenet" where he plays around with time, going forward and backward at the same time. I can't explain it in a post. Like all his movies, you have to watch it two or three times. And thanks for doing 'Inception". It's such a trippy movie and so much fun to watch and it always blows me away.
Your reactions are so emotional and beautiful I’m sad this channel is barely starting lol but I will be with you on your journey also you’re so smart! You put together things many people miss on their first time on very complicated films! You’re awesome
You did really well for a first time watch of this one as there is so much to process and unpack 😊 I also find it SO WHOLESOME how broken you are over any scenes in any movie with a familial theme (especially involving the children) I'm sure you can read up for days on this and you can get your answers but I agree with your feeling at the ending. It doesnt matter if he is dreaming or not, Cobb has now accepted his reality 😊
They shot those corridor scenes by having corridor looking set inside spinning machine, that's why it looks like they are standing on walls, ceiling. Weightless scenes were either lines or done inside a plane descending at speed nullifying gravity pull.
Your reactions make me really happy. I love when people are moved by stories. I am trying to be a writer and have had some success making people feel things with my written word. There's nothing more gratifying than the feeling I get when I communicate an idea without ever saying exactly what my intent is. Love that you were able to see Nolan and Company's point through the narrative and love that you felt this so deeply. Thanks for sharing with us!
@@LiteWeightReacting I won’t! Hehe. Also, I tried to point you to a behind the scenes video but I think because it was a comment with a link it got pulled down- but you should look up the behind the scenes of how they filmed the hallway fight scene! It’s crazy!
I rarely find reaction channels that make me instantly sub and look forward for ANY uploads by ticking the bell, your observations on this movie are top tier and can't wait for the Dark Knight trilogy!
I really appreciate this reaction, thank you. The immediate outro is great too, it feels so much more authentic and in the moment so thanks for that too! I've seen Arrival has been mentioned and I agree, it's amazing and worth watching like these so far.
I swear I just love your raw emotions to these reactions. I wouldn't cry on these reactions, but I do appreciate how you do manage the reactions...and the use of the tissue 🤣🤣🤣.
I waited till the weekend to see the full reaction over on Patreon. You're so insightful and attentive to detail. Loved the reaction! Also reminder, get waterproof mascara!
The spinning hallways scene never not impress me. That was next level. Love this movie. Another neat detail: The names of the characters form DREAMS PAY - Dom, Robert, Eames, Arthur, Mal and Saito. Add Peter, Ariadne and Yusuf, it makes "Dreams Pay", which is how they earn their living
I saw this movie in theaters back in 2010. Some of the intense scenes with Mal are still stuck in my mind all these years later. Fantastic video and commentary. Can't wait for more uploads.
Also, you rightly wondered in your reaction how the team got back to the plane from the “rainy city” dream level one at the end. They actually had to wait around a week in that dream layer until the timer expired on the dream machine on the plane. They rode the double kicks back to the “Rainy City” but there was no way to double kick back to reality on the plane. Had to just wait for the timer to expire which then wakes them up. If they would have killed themselves in Rainy City level, they would have dropped to Limbo. Somehow Cobb and Saito, when Saito shoots Cobb and himself in Limbo at dining table, they awake on the plane (possibly because all the other dream layers have all collapsed and no longer exist). Hope this helps
"He is not wearing his wedding ring anymore.." .. wow I guess that's what the ladies notice easier than us guys :) Never paid attention to that even after many re-watches of this movie :) Great reaction! keep it up ! please!
Cheat code for understanding the layers: It's all about the kick - any layer added means a kick has to be planned. The kicks are timed so that riding the kick of the lower layer gives you time to ride the kick of the layer above it etc until you're back to reality. Any unplanned layers means they have to figure out a kick and time it right (because it wasn't planned) The last kick planned was the van going off the bridge, once Saito died they had to go one layer deeper to get him but make it in time before the van hit the ground (last possible kick)
My favorite movie of all time BY FAR and this is quite frankly one of the best reactions to it ive ever seen. And yes the re-watch value on this movie is unmatched. Great job 💥
I've watched this movie probably 75-100 times (it's in my top 10), and I had NEVER noticed the wedding ring thing in all of those viewings. Very interesting detail you instantly picked up on! I also hope you do Nolan's "Memento", it's my 3rd favorite Nolan film, and I think you'd really enjoy it. Anyway, great reaction!
Hey Zmarko! So good news, Memento will be up after The Dark Knight! Second, I’m proud I was able to pick up on the wedding ring but I do have to admit I think a lot of women are very perceptive with rings. It’s like our superpower haha
@@LiteWeightReacting You can't go wrong with "Memento" either. Every scene is in reverse order but with Nolan's brilliance it works perfectly with the protagonist.
I’ve always said and will end up dying on this hill that the totem was going to topple over and he really did make it back home and wasn’t dreaming. Maybe I’m a sucker for wanting a good ending but all the other times he would do that test in the dream it never even wobbled.
You might be right…but I keep getting stuck on the fact that his kids are wearing the same clothes in both scenes…when he has to leave in the beginning, and when he returns at the end…
The significance of the camera cutting before we see if the top falls isn't whether Cobb is in reality or not -- it's that Cobb walks away from the top before checking if it falls. Cobb no longer cares if he's in reality or not, as long as he's reunited with his kids.
love how you wear your emotions on your sleeve. ❤️ it definitely makes consuming media where themes and tones that are depressing or sad, that much harder to watch cause then we end up crying tears by the bucket full. 😭
@@LiteWeightReacting you’re not alone hahaha i can’t tell you how many time i’m emotionally tired by the time i finish a movie that hits my heart strings
Christopher Nolan is a genius, simple as that. Good eye with the wedding ring detail. Great reaction. I'm so glad i found your channel as you're starting so i can see how it evolves, it's gonna be a great ride
I've seen the movie a couple of times already and watched several reactions - but the thing with his (Cobb) wedding ring in the dream never got to my attention - thank you for bringing that up, that's awesome. Nolan is a legend.
You’re one of the first people I’ve seen who one, figured out the wedding ring, two, understood that the top not falling is proof that Cobb has healed. He has accepted his current reality and is no longer paranoid. Also for the turning hallway scene, Nolan actually constructed a mobile hallway and had them do their choreography while it slowly spun.
40:07 seriously what game is this? You'd be skiing and after some time an abominable snowman runs 140mph down after you and eats you. It's a memory that's imprinted on my brain for life.
You are correct: Cobb is wearing his ring in dreams, but not in reality. It's much easier to see in the airport as he's going through customs, there are a couple of shots where you can clearly see he is not wearing his ring. But the ambiguity at the end is purposeful in conveying that in the end, it didn't matter to Cobb anymore whether it was real or not: he was going to be with his kids no matter what. When this came out in theaters, I was going through a custody battle for my kids. I ultimately won custody, but at the time my access to my kids was limited, so this film really hit me hard.
In the final final scene it's difficult to see if he has the ring, but in the prior scene he hands in his passport at the airport with his left hand and there's no ring there Good job noticing that detail as early as you did
This is my fav movie of all time and I'm glad you reacted to it and it affected you deeply. I was a changed person after this movie and I'm sure other people were as well. In the theatres when the movie ended, one guy literally yelled out INCEPTIONNNN!!! 😂
Cobb: We need great depth Yusuf: A dream within a dream... 2 levels Cobb: I said great depth, not just another tuesday sir. Make it 3 Ariadne: How about 4?
The first time I saw this movie I was being processed out of Basic Training in '12. I was sick as a dog and delirious, but it's Movie Night and NO ONE misses that shit. I had NO idea what was happening lol. One of my favorites.
Something you might have noticed about the Nolan’s by now is that they have an obsession with time, any story that they tell time is a crucial element of the story, it’s a little rudimentary in the Batman sequels, but it is still present.
This is my favorite movie OF ALL TIME. And I so, so appreciated your reaction to it. This is one of my favorite reactions to this film that I’ve seen. Your ability to pick up on the small things and your emotional connection to all the hard-hitting moments. It’s so wonderful to see it resonate with others the way it resonates with me. It is such a BEAUTIFUL movie. I actually did a persuasive essay on whether the ending was real or not for an English class in college and there’s a lot of evidence that it’s reality. 1. The biggest reason I see for this is that Cobb was always aware of his reality, even in limbo the first time. He admits to that when Mal says “you don’t believe in one reality anymore, so choose here, choose me.” He argues, “no I know what’s real because no matter how confused I get, the guilt is always there reminding me of the truth.” As much as he wants it to be true and submit to delusion, anywhere Mal can show up, cannot be reality. She is gone and it was his fault and there’s no forgetting that. I think that’s truly why he uses her totem. It’s more symbolic…when he has a moment of doubt, he spins her totem (like he did in limbo when he planted her idea) and it’s a reminder of the guilt and it grounds him. Aside from that, as many have stated, his wedding ring is always present in the dream and not in reality. Ariadne asks him “why is it so important to dream?” And he replies “in my dreams, we’re still together.” 2. The kids. Despite the real-world fact that there are two sets of kids (and one set is credited as “older James” and “older Philippa” ) and the differences in clothing, (they are very similar in color and shape but look at screenshots, it’s different clothes), there’s the point about never seeing their faces. I liken that to dreams where, say, you’re trying to fix your hair or makeup but no matter how hard you try you can’t seem to get a good look in the mirror, or your driving and can’t for some reason look up out of the windshield. His children’s faces evade him like that in the dreams, I think. His subconscious feels guilt over leaving without saying goodbye and punishes him with that barrier. So being able to see their faces at the end is more than just oh he chose to wait and look at their faces. He could literally never get a glimpse in the dreams, even if he’d wanted to. 3. Michael Caine states that Nolan told him any scene he’s in is reality. So, boom, that’s easy. 4. Cobb says “you never really know how a dream starts, do you? You just end up in the middle of it. Think about it, Ariadne, how did you get here?” But once Cobb wakes up on the plane, we see his entire journey through the airport, through customs, and then home. I think that was all done intentionally. Cobb knows how he got there to his kids and so do we. 4. Finally, we get a good clip of how the spinning totem responds in the dream. The only instance we see of its function in a dream, is when Cobb plants the idea in Mal’s safe in limbo. In a dream, the top spins straight up as if it’s standing still, on and on. It never wobbles or wavers or moves in circles. At the end when he spins it, before the cut to black, it in fact wobbles. I know people say the point is that he doesn’t care and I think that’s valid and I agree. (But I care! Lol) But I also think that’s the biggest clue that it’s reality. If that totem really was just a reminder of the guilt of what he did to Mal, he’s made his peace with it. All of that is finally in the past. He’s forgiven himself and atoned and made it home, so he has no need to look back for the reminder. He’s not suppressing the truth. He’s moving forward and letting go-not of the concept or belief in reality (because he’s sure of that now) but of Mal. Dreams and Mal are the past, reality and his children are the future. Thank you for this. I’m going to sub and watch your other reactions now!!! Consider watching Tenet please, that’s another one of Nolan’s mind-bending masterpieces.
Love this movie. It's one of those that after it was over, I sat alone in the theater just in awe with thought on it. Amazing that one can think of this, then relay that thought to someone else, then to build a script for it, and then digitally recreate it all. It's mind blowing when you think about how it came to this point of us viewing this idea. WOW. Recommend a rewatch to really put the puzzle together, although you seemed to pick up on most of it. ... Have you seen "Shutter Island"? Its another one that will play against your mind. I sometimes confuse the ending of these two films with each other.
@27:37 well done! 👏💯 most people don’t catch that as fast as you did. Been really enjoying your reactions and how good you pay attention details. Keep up the great work and looking forward to future movie reactions.
I gotta say, you're far more perceptive than you give yourself credit for, and I really enjoy watching your reactions for that reason. You got this movie right the first time, which is no small feat: Cobb decided that being with his kids was going to be his reality, whether it was real or not. ❤
As far as I'm concerned, Nolan is hands down the best director there is right now. It's not only the quality of the stories, but especially his ability to explain very complex, multi-layered plots like this one with very simple visual inputs. He estabilishes some small details that stick in your subconscious and then uses them again throughout the movie as reminders so that you immediately realize where/when you are. It's masterful. And the build-up. The music and the drama growing along with the stakes, to explode together in the finale. I honestly wish he would make a new movie every other day.
I'm still watchung but I have to say right now that I really love how deep you are into it, how you react to all of it and how your mind is handling it. So impressive and so much fun! I can still remember when I watched it for the first time at the movies. It definitly changed my view of cinema itself and a couple of other things.😊 You feel different than the other reactors here. You are yourself. Thank you. 🙏🏼
As a kid I once had a multi-level dream including over a year of memories. Afterwards, I remembered the details of that alternative life for a long time.
There is a much easier explanation that Nolan gave, as to whether in the finale, Dicaprio is dreaming or not: the explanation was "If Michael Caine is present it is not a dream."
I've never seen anyone do a deep dive on a director like you're doing with Nolan and I'm loving the journey. I absolutely cannot wait for The Prestige!
Seriously one of the best reactions to this movie I’ve ever seen 🥹 I cried with you every time. Also if you haven’t yet, I highly recommend watching Doctor Who, and Chuck (very different shows, but so good). And I’d love to see reactions to them if you choose to see them in the future
A wonderful analysis. And yes, I'm in complete agreement with you. As an older guy I was even tearing up, especially at the end when Cillian's father said he was "disappointed" that his son "had tried" (to be him) and then Cillian opening the small safe to find his pin-wheel carefully protected and preserved (to confirm its value)l, only to turn back to his father who had now passed on. And more tears by Cillian as he held his father's hand. This movie was so stock-full of multiple plots, sub-plots, and details, all filmed so well AND cut together so well that ---- it put the lie to the famous clique that ---- books are better then movies. Nope! Not in this case. This movie WAS better than any book! And the score was so dreamy and perfect for the movie. So haunting but beautiful. Sad and happy at the same time. Makes me smile because although the ending was ambiguous, I've already decided what I believe to be real.
@@LiteWeightReacting Agree! They’re the best. If you’ve ever seen the old movie What Dreams May Come, it would reinforce that same need for recuperation as it’s very similar in weight with just a little less hope (lol).
I use to play with dreaming. Trying to become conscious when I was dreaming. I accidentally spend 20 years in a dream. It was hard after waking because I had forgotten everyone's name. I didn't expect to ever wake up. It took about a week to remember everything I had forgotten. But I had only been asleep for 2 minutes. I've had some amazing dreams.
I walked into this movie blind, no clue what I was in for, last second decision with friends. I was blown away, partly because of the total package of the film, but mainly having somebody else depict the concept of dreaming the way I had always known it, through vivid and lucid dreaming. Had to look up Nolan after, and sure enough, he's left handed. He lucid dreams and writing from experience.
Hello! Shout out from your favorite Marine! 22:58 Because you look like a princess! And I'm sure you'd look equally is good with no makeup on! Your reaction to this was just Gold! Nolan and Zimmer together are priceless! 49:28 I love how genuine you are when you watch these movies! So glad your doing movie reviews! Please keep it up! ❤🤍💙💛
15:02 Nolan didn’t put tells in. The opposite, in fact. In every scene, we start watching as soon as something happens. You never see people walk into the room, or board the plane. You see them already sitting at the table talking. We are told that this is how dreaming works, but the movie does it in every scene, specifically so the audience can never be 100% certain they aren’t still in another level of dream. Like at the end, you don’t see the top fall over, though it looks like it’s about to. But he walks into the room, starts spinning the top and looks up to see his kids turn and look at him. The kids were in exactly the same place, wearing the same clothes, doing the same thing as when he last saw them. And the camera looks at the top, still spinning. Fade to black, roll credits.
There is another movie that reminds me a lot of Inception (personally one of my favourites) that have kind of gone under the radar, "Source Code". Its a pure gem of a movie! And has one of the most beautiful scenes ever made in a movie!
The fact that you caught on to the wedding ring being Cobb's totem is amazing! Great reaction.
Thank you!!! Looking for all the bread crumbs that Christopher Nolan leaves for us to find is like a fun challenge for me!!
If I’m not in it, it’s a dream.”
However later Nolan stated Cobb doesn`t care. It is for intellectual ambiguity for the audience.
Nolan has stated that isn't the case.
also ... Michael Cain once said that he was never part of a dream sequence ... so in the end he gotta be in reality
I love Cillian Murphy’s facial expression change as he sees the pinwheel in the safe. Breaks my heart every time, fantastic acting
Dude, that guy is seriously so talented! Really excited to see him in Oppenheimer!
@@LiteWeightReacting He's multiple levels better in Oppenheimer. You'll see.
Thats awesome to hear.@@scottingram7634 Still gotta watch
The inception sticking in that moment. Such an incredible movie.
@@LiteWeightReactingyes he really is and he is so handsome.
Yes. It’s as if Nolan has a degree in psychotherapy. There is so much processing of guilt and loss written into the construct of the characters. This movie gets better and better the more you watch it. One of my all time favorites.
Seriously! He understands human emotions so well!
If you like this type of movie, I'd highly recommend Arrival. That film is one of my favorites of all time.
Lots of people commented this on my Interstellar reaction too! I will definitely check it out!
@@LiteWeightReactingIf you watch Arrival, you will DEFINITELY need tear proof makeup.
Oohhhh Arrival is brilliant
Very good reaction!
HUGE vouch, my two favorite directors are Nolan and Villenueve. Interstellar, Bladerunner 2049, and Arrival are all top tier movies.
Ariadne is the person that gives the hero Theseus a method to get out of the labyrinth (using a spool of thread to backtrack your way to the entrance).
Figuratively, that's her role in the job.
The first thing Cobb asks her is to design a maze.
I knew it had to mean something but I don’t have a super big knowledge of Greek mythology, outside of video games 🤣
_Dark_ vibes, anyone?
To add to that, the spool of thread Ariadne’s gives in the myth is red. And you’ll notice, in the movie, red is constantly a part of Ariadne’s wardrobe.
"The first thing Cobb asks her is to design a maze"
That would make her Daedalus, not Ariadne.
This could also be taken figuratively since Ariadne helped him, living in exile, to "find his way back home" to his kids and come back to reality.
I love that you got emotional at 46:25 . It tells me you fully understood the movie . Some people don't on the first watch
I was worried I wouldnt get it but Nolan tells stories in such a way that if you’re paying attention you can follow on the first watch!
@@LiteWeightReactingimagine that there were a bunch of critics who said and still say Nolan makes emotionless movies...
And that’s so beautiful!
Indeed. It took me a while on that one as well. I kept going over it in my head, "was it going to fall, no, yes? still dreaming?" Then I finally realized that it didn't matter, what mattered was the kids and the happiness. Really well done by Nolan as usual.
@@lordofentropy oh my yes.. thats what I've been thinking also. Finally be with the kids..
An even if you analyse the clues, it's pretty much clear that the ending was not a dream. Because, wobbling spinning top.
Yep correct, and Nolan said this to Gamerant/HappySad podcast:
The Oppenheimer director revealed that everyone is missing the bigger picture.
...According to Nolan, Cobb doesn't care if he's still in a dream.
This has been my favorite movie for the last 14 years
yeah it has
Others probably mentioned but Christopher Nolan worked on the script for nearly 10 years to tell this story.
Wow! That’s an amazing interpretation! Thanks for sharing. I hadn’t thought of that!
That's great. I always took it as Cobb just doesn't care if it is real or not... and in the end, neither should we. :)
Actually, when he wrote it, it was reality whenever Michael Caine was in the scene. But later on he waffled and decided he liked the idea that it’s not definitive one c way or the other. Kind of like the end of [spoiler below]
Total Recall. You never know if the events are real or false implanted memories.
I know you love the cutey nicey wrap up, but the liklihood of it being real, is veryyyyyy low.
Michael Caine said: "If his character is in the scene, its reality!"
They really are! I need to watch a behind the scenes asap!
Yes, the BTS is brilliant!
Yes.
Nolan loves practical fx in the camera shots compared to digital...
You nailed it!
Couple of fun facts others maybe haven't mentioned yet:
- during the main part of the hallway fight they didn't have wires, the actors had to time their movements perfectly while the entire set rotated, otherwise they would fall from the "ceiling" to the "floor"
- the water exploding in from the sides at the beginning of the dream was all real, they used cannons
- Nolan worked on the script for 10 years, on and off
- Nolan got the initial idea when during college he had to wake up earlier to get a free breakfast and then went back to his dorm to sleep again, and started experiencing lucid dreaming and becoming self-aware; Inception was his idea of a Bond-ish movie with that concept at its core
- Nolan wrote the part of Cobb with Leo in mind
I could go on but I won't, kudos if you got to this part 😆👋🏻
Wow! Loved all the little facts about the movie! Thanks for sharing. Also, to be fair, I feel like women always notice wedding rings haha it’s like a gift! 🤣

AH! I knew it had to mean something! Thanks for sharing!

They shot those corridor scenes by having corridor looking set inside spinning machine, that's why it looks like they are standing on walls, ceiling.
Weightless scenes were either lines or done inside a plane descending at speed nullifying gravity pull.

Oo that’s so cool!! Nolan really thought of everything it seems like 🤣
I saw this movie in theaters back in 2010. Some of the intense scenes with Mal are still stuck in my mind all these years later. Fantastic video and commentary. Can't wait for more uploads.
So well acted and shot! Really hit home!
The hallway fight was filmed in such a cool way, they made an actual rotating film set
"He is not wearing his wedding ring anymore.." .. wow I guess that's what the ladies notice easier than us guys :) Never paid attention to that even after many re-watches of this movie :)
Great reaction! keep it up ! please!
Thank you! The Dark Knight is up next!
Thank you for the upload, Lite! Such a great movie!
Thanks for commenting! Hope you enjoyed 😊
Cheat code for understanding the layers:
It's all about the kick - any layer added means a kick has to be planned. The kicks are timed so that riding the kick of the lower layer gives you time to ride the kick of the layer above it etc until you're back to reality. Any unplanned layers means they have to figure out a kick and time it right (because it wasn't planned)
The last kick planned was the van going off the bridge, once Saito died they had to go one layer deeper to get him but make it in time before the van hit the ground (last possible kick)
Such a incredible movie, I'm with you on the getting confused with the whole what is going on,teegan. Another phenomenal reaction. Keep being awesome

I love that Inception is one big metaphor for films and filmmaking. This movie is more arthouse than some give it credit for.
The ski game was called SkiFree and it was on early versions of Windows OS. You sky, dodge obstacles and eventually an abominable snowman eats you.
Memento soon?! Another Nolan classic!
Exactly

I've seen the movie a couple of times already and watched several reactions - but the thing with his (Cobb) wedding ring in the dream never got to my attention - thank you for bringing that up, that's awesome. Nolan is a legend.
Awesome! Loved that you found something new with this!
In the final final scene it's difficult to see if he has the ring, but in the prior scene he hands in his passport at the airport with his left hand and there's no ring there
Good job noticing that detail as early as you did
your reactions are so good and you always have great insights
This is my fav movie of all time and I'm glad you reacted to it and it affected you deeply. I was a changed person after this movie and I'm sure other people were as well. In the theatres when the movie ended, one guy literally yelled out INCEPTIONNNN!!! 😂
Cobb spinning the totem and allowing himself to see his kids face means that he has accepted this as his reality, whether it is or not.
Cobb: We need great depth
Yusuf: A dream within a dream... 2 levels
Cobb: I said great depth, not just another tuesday sir. Make it 3
Ariadne: How about 4?
You nailed it with your summary that's exactly why he left it up to interpretation.
The first time I saw this movie I was being processed out of Basic Training in '12. I was sick as a dog and delirious, but it's Movie Night and NO ONE misses that shit. I had NO idea what was happening lol. One of my favorites.
It’s so great that you caught Christopher Nolan’s intended ending. It doesn’t matter if he’s dreaming because he’s content was what Nolan intended
Something you might have noticed about the Nolan’s by now is that they have an obsession with time, any story that they tell time is a crucial element of the story, it’s a little rudimentary in the Batman sequels, but it is still present.
I have begun to notice that! He nails it too!
Ariadne asks him “why is it so important to dream?” And he replies “in my dreams, we’re still together.”
I don't think I ever teared up to Inception or reactions to it before. You brought it out of me with your reaction.
Thank you 😊 Glad you enjoyed this!
Great watch Lite! You caught on to stuff that I never even thought to look for. Brilliant as always!
Thanks Alex!!! Glad you enjoyed and thanks for hanging out during Weirdo Wednesday 🤣
you understood this movie way way better than most people do on their first watch honestly fantastic job
This is prewatched 100 percent
This was the most original sci-fi movie I'd seen in theatres since the first Matrix.
I am so happy I found your channel! Your reactions have been so genuine. Love it! 🥹😂
Thank you ReyEric! I’m glad you found the channel too! 😊
It definitly changed my view of cinema itself and a couple of other things.😊
You feel different than the other reactors here. You are yourself. Thank you. 🙏🏼
Oh thanks! This is a huge compliment 😊 I appreciate you! And I hope you enjoyed the rest of the reaction!
@@LiteWeightReacting I really did! I'm really lookin forward to your next. 😁
I can read in dreams, but any time I re-read a passage the words have changed. That’s one of the ways I realise that I’m dreaming.
As a kid I once had a multi-level dream including over a year of memories. Afterwards, I remembered the details of that alternative life for a long time.
There is a much easier explanation that Nolan gave, as to whether in the finale, Dicaprio is dreaming or not: the explanation was "If Michael Caine is present it is not a dream."
the hallway scene was done in a giant tumbler with the camera on a frozen stand. The actors spent weeks rehearsing their moves.
I've never seen anyone do a deep dive on a director like you're doing with Nolan and I'm loving the journey. I absolutely cannot wait for The Prestige!
Hey! I’m glad you’re enjoying the Nolan binge. Im having a great time with it too!!!
I didn't catch it but did you say The Prestige is on your list? It's another Nolan film and one of my favorites of all time.
Yep! In order next:
The Dark Knight
Memento
The Dark Knight Rises
The Prestige
@@LiteWeightReacting AWESOME! Can't wait!
Very thoughtful and beautiful interpretation of the ending. Enjoyed your reaction!
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed it 😊
A wonderful analysis.
Great reaction!! I can never hope to fully grasp this one, but the heart strings are pulled either way. Heavy.
Yes it’s so heavy! Crazy to me that a movies about dreams is so powerful!
@@LiteWeightReacting Agree! They’re the best. If you’ve ever seen the old movie What Dreams May Come, it would reinforce that same need for recuperation as it’s very similar in weight with just a little less hope (lol).
You're the first person I've known to pick up on the wedding ring... Bravo!! And I agree with you... this film is brilliant!
Don't advertise on others pages itz more than pathetic
Being very late. Thank you for being so honest about private stuff. This movie hit me as well. All the best to you!
Christopher Nolan is a great story teller & amazing movie maker in the old school of cinema
It’s actually crazy that you figured out, that if he’s wearing his wedding ring he’s in a dream. You have a good eye for details!
Amazing channel and reactions! Great movie choices!
Thank you!! Glad you’re liking them!
There is another movie that reminds me a lot of Inception (personally one of my favourites) that have kind of gone under the radar, "Source Code".
Its a pure gem of a movie! And has one of the most beautiful scenes ever made in a movie!
看完這部影片,感覺Christopher Nolan也放了一個東西在我心中
He has a way of making everything so emotional!
