People have to remember this is a fictional drama based on real events. This is a great scene, but it’s unlikely it ever happened in reality. Philip was a royal long before marrying Elizabeth. He understood the importance of the coronation and his role and from all real accounts never put up any sort of resistance to paying homage to his wife as queen.

    • @johnroscoe2406

Um yeah but he also understood what happened to royals who were aloof and out of step. What he says in the fictionalized scene about Greece and his grandfather are true historic events.

Actually something like this probably did happen a lot of the arguments they have were based on real ones but with different reasons such as the walk behind her one in Greece the royal couple walked side by side with the ruleing member on the outside for better vewie it was about safety more then rank sense it ment thir guards could get to both more quickly without haveing to deal with a gap then there was the last name one she had a uncle who had kids her name would live in his wouldent sense his older brother had died diring the war

Something I’ve liked about The Crown is that Elizabeth and Philip’s marriage is portrayed as very 3 dimensional. Actually accurate to how they were in real life, or not, the couple in the show has always been realistic. Especially shown when they’re young, the two are a perfect pair in some aspects, just fine in others, and completely different in the rest. When they’re older, they are more settled and tolerate things better, but it’s still shown that they are distinct people who are in a usually good marriage, but it definitely isn’t perfect in every aspect.

Greece is one of the poorest countries in Europe and correspondingly, the Greek Royals were literally the Church Mice of Europe....The Greek Royals were exiled twice....his Mother's family the Mountbattens (Battenbergs) were amazing....not royal but noble and RELATED to a bunch of royals. We campaigned for years to have a clear statement that it was fiction.
The amount of people who believed this was a drama-documentary was stunning, especially in the USA.
This is how we became aware of the 30 year scam based on the hoax Diana Interview 1995 with the BBC Martin Bashir he obtained using fake evidence and fraudulent documents to convince Diana that Charles was having revenge affairs for all of hers.
And con her into believing there was a plot to kill her- that literally terrified her to her death.
The horror that they actually believed Charles was having an affair with one of the people who were framed- now our Queen Camilla and Diana was a gullible victim of a convenient baby producer, for 30 years, we were stunned and furious.
      It just wasn't true.
The divorce was because of Diana's infidelity.
They said they targeted the USA because they were all "gullible Disneyheads".

I can't help but compare this show to ITV/PBS' "Victoria" ("The Crown" came out not long after, and they're both about British queens from the begining of their reign, surrounded by people thinking they're not up to the job - there's a lot of similarities!) and the one thing I never understood was why in "Victoria", Prince Albert is an incredibly proudful man, but still knows the difference between his wife and his queen, yet in "The Crown", 100 years later when equality has come on leaps and bounds, they've ramoed up Philip's pride to the point he won't even kneel to his queen, something the _real_ Philip would never have considered.... It's a really strange choice, and I don't get it.

Although it seems that Elizabeth adored him as her soulmate, he always seems to be making her job harder, rather than easier. Even her headstrong grandmother bows to her when George VI dies and she is now Queen. Phillip signs up to play the game, but then complains about the rules to whole time he’s playing.

I understand why TV show Phillip would struggle with a request like this. I don't think anyone would like the idea of showing public deference to their spouse. But a proud and stubborn man in an age where men were atill very much the head of their family would hate it even more. However, she was right to insist on it. She was a woman, a young, shy one at that, and had a lot to prove in the eyes of the people and her advisors. She needed to show that she was capable of commanding the respect that a Monarch usually receives.
I know, I know, it's a fictional scene. But as a fictional scene, it has liscence to use symbolism and metaphor to develop these characters.

I think you’re having trouble separating her as his wife and his queen. As his wife, she shouldn’t ask him to kneel before her because, as you’ve said, they are equal in their partnership. BUT, as his queen, she has every right to demand him to kneel before her because her station demands respect of all her subjects which includes him. It’s a lot like separating personal and professional relationships. Your boss may be your friend at work, but he’s still your boss. So, when he asks you to do something that you don’t necessarily like, it’s still your responsibility to do it without arguing. Think of it that way if it helps.

It's a monarchy and wives bow to their husbands when the husband is king. Everyone bows to the King or Queen. If she were to make an exception she would have appeared weak to other nations. She was telling him he is bowing to the crown. To the monarchy. The Real Philip understood this and did bow. In a monarchy everyone is not equal. There are titles to show each person's rank and the hierarchy. Her husband did understand this as well as everyone in the royal family. Most people in the nation understood this and he most certainly did since he was not a foreigner nor a commoner. Prince Philip was 18 when he started corresponding with 13 year old Elizabeth, heir to the crown. He understood.
