This is such a brilliant back and forth. Matt Smith and Claire Foy are amazing actors and their chemistry in this show was just amazing!
Too good. The second I had to say goodbye to these two, the show lost it's touch for me.
I get that the time skips are necessary, but urrrghhhhhhhhh...it ruined it for me. Really enjoyed Foy and Smith.
👍
People have to remember this is a fictional drama based on real events. This is a great scene, but it’s unlikely it ever happened in reality. Philip was a royal long before marrying Elizabeth. He understood the importance of the coronation and his role and from all real accounts never put up any sort of resistance to paying homage to his wife as queen.
Um yeah but he also understood what happened to royals who were aloof and out of step. What he says in the fictionalized scene about Greece and his grandfather are true historic events.
Yes we know...in fact I read the real Prince had no problem with kneeling.
Yes if you watch the real life footage of the coronation he bounds up the stairs, says his vows in a clear unhesitating voice, then kisses her on the cheek and gives her a big grin. Far from having a problem with it, he was obviously proud as punch of her.
I kinda figured this was fictional because he should have knew who he was married to especially since he came from royal himself.
Actually something like this probably did happen a lot of the arguments they have were based on real ones but with different reasons such as the walk behind her one in Greece the royal couple walked side by side with the ruleing member on the outside for better vewie it was about safety more then rank sense it ment thir guards could get to both more quickly without haveing to deal with a gap then there was the last name one she had a uncle who had kids her name would live in his wouldent sense his older brother had died diring the war
Something I’ve liked about The Crown is that Elizabeth and Philip’s marriage is portrayed as very 3 dimensional. Actually accurate to how they were in real life, or not, the couple in the show has always been realistic. Especially shown when they’re young, the two are a perfect pair in some aspects, just fine in others, and completely different in the rest. When they’re older, they are more settled and tolerate things better, but it’s still shown that they are distinct people who are in a usually good marriage, but it definitely isn’t perfect in every aspect.
The strive for perfection is always, inevitably, going to end in failure.
Philip stood a steep back his wife as Queen all his life .
This means a lot.
he knew he would be before he married her - gads - it’s not like this was all a big surprise to him 🤨 Phil was such a big baby
@@ej3016
Of course he knew before marrying her.
Claire Foy was so brilliant. The thing I noticed is that she was so in character that the micro expressions matched. Bad actors leak. She was, even against stiff competition, my favorite queen.
He knew she’d be queen one day when he married her. Not sure what he expected here.
He plays a Prince in House of the Dragon and The Crown, The GOAT
Oh and Doctor Who. He played Doctor Who.
Don’t forget Morbius
His performance here is greater although House of the Dragon earned him meme materials
He is awesome in house of the dragon
I would’ve watched 6 seasons of Claire Foy and Matt Smith ❤️ ☺️
Oh one of my favorite scenes in the series and Matt and Claire were so amazing! This was the start of the rift between them that climaxed in the final episode of season 2!
Their chemistry is so good
I thoroughly enjoyed all 6 seasons of The Crown. It's important to remember that it's a drama, not a documentary or a reenactment. I've spoken to quite a few people who couldn't help but assume that it all happened for real.
I know it’s a drama with dialogue that was created by writers and not factual, but this series made Her Majesty, to me at least, more real. It made you wonder what conversations were really had. She also was made to look strong and fierce. A side not seen by us very often.
I’m guessing you aren’t a Brit
Out of all actresses playing the Queen I like the the most.
Love Clair Foy and Matt Smith, favourite part of the whole series! Love those two as their roles.
I love Matt Smith. He’s such an amazing actor and has such presence. Love him.
Matt used to be a futballer n then to see him put up search a great perfomance is just awsome
Philip had it tough. Greece is one of the poorest countries in Europe and correspondingly, the Greek Royals were literally the Church Mice of Europe....The Greek Royals were exiled twice....his Mother's family the Mountbattens (Battenbergs) were amazing....not royal but noble and RELATED to a bunch of royals. Philip's Great Aunt was Russian Empress Alexandra, wife of Nicholas...and his Aunt Louise was Queen of Sweden.
Yeah the real Philip was so poor when he was courting Elizabeth that he didn't even have enough money to buy her an engagement ring. Luckily his mum, Princess Alice, came to the rescue and gave him some of her jewellery so that Philip could use one of the diamonds to have a ring made. A true love match.
@@theshillneckedlizard8364 On The CROWN, Alice is shown pawning one of her (very valuable) jewels to get the money to help her religious order. The pawn broker assumes she's a liar and a thief ...
@@maestroclassico5801 Yeah, she really did sell most of her jewellery to found her religious order, not to pawnbrokers though, to private buyers. Not that she had all that much because she had to leave most of it behind in Greece, but what did have she either sold or gave away to charity. She was a remarkable lady.
@@theshillneckedlizard8364 Have you seen the episode? I think it's season 3....Jane Lapotaire who played her, was fantastic. And it indeed shows Alice with her order and it's actually a funny scene as the police come in and yell at the shopkeeper she tried to sell her jewelry to "Do you not know who that is? That's Princess Alice...her Great Grandmother was Queen Victoria and her Uncle was the Czar!" And here's Alice dressed like an impoverished nun.
We're not that poor. And a big reason we abolished the monarchy is because Queen Frederica was a greedy, German cow and was taxing everything too much. I really liked Constantine though. And his kids are a lot better behaved than Elizabeth's.
SUCH a great scene!!
Very nice scene.
I want to watch this now
When my wife and I watched this I told her that were we in this situation, I would kneel. However it was going to cost her a bauble, something pretty...and very expensive like a fist sized emerald...and maybe a large estate in Australia...and a boat, a really nice boat.
She replied that I would kneel, get nothing, and be happy about it or she would have a couple Royal Marines whip my ass around the palace a few times.
THAT is how a real queen deals with insubordination. I love my wife.
Perhaps
An hour in the Tower
Will remind him
Who is boss!
I don’t know why I enjoyed so much this scene!
Domination fantasies???
YES@@lisamcallister6534
He knew it was going to come to this sooner or later. Even had David not abdicated she was destined to become Queen eventually.
Claire Foy, Matt Smith and Pip Torrens (Tommy Lascelles) make this show worth watching!
They'd both have laughed 😊
They were great ! Dam
Hmm. That’s actually sensible advice. A gamble.
Aaaaand the other shoe drops.
And honestly, if I was in the scene and married to Claire...it would of been a simple, "Of course dear!" LOL!!! I wouldn't have had a problem kneeling as what a wonderful act of love and kindness it would have been!
The real Philip had no problem with it at all. If you watch the newsreel footage of the coronation, he bounds up the stairs, says his vows in a clear ringing voice, then takes her hands in his, gives her a kiss on the cheek and gives her a big grin! It didn't bother him at all, far from it, he was obviously very proud of her.
@@theshillneckedlizard8364 Oh absolutely ! If you scroll down to Jasonkoch's comment you'll see my reply to him...thx though! 👍
All these scenes they all walk so loud across the floor
On one condition, that you kneel!

Now I understand why the real Prince Philip hated this series and sued the producers
We campaigned for years to have a clear statement that it was fiction.
The amount of people who believed this was a drama-documentary was stunning, especially in the USA.
This is how we became aware of the 30 year scam based on the hoax Diana Interview 1995 with the BBC Martin Bashir he obtained using fake evidence and fraudulent documents to convince Diana that Charles was having revenge affairs for all of hers.
And con her into believing there was a plot to kill her- that literally terrified her to her death.
The horror that they actually believed Charles was having an affair with one of the people who were framed- now our Queen Camilla and Diana was a gullible victim of a convenient baby producer, for 30 years, we were stunned and furious.
It just wasn't true.
The divorce was because of Diana's infidelity.
They said they targeted the USA because they were all "gullible Disneyheads".
Our friends and allies. Absolutely livid.
I'm glad people are becoming aware.
They were really kind to him, they didn't even show his numerous affairs, just hinted at them
@@rejanrobinson8797 he was so badly represented that Her late Majesty became very upset about it. There have only ever been rumours and gossip about affairs, none of them ever confirmed, nor proven.
Thats probably not why.
He never sued them! Lol
The actions that Philip describe here that took place in Greece would never happen in England. England had a very unique relationship with its Queens and Kings for better or for worse. The English civil war was more government vs the Crown than the people vs the Crown that gets thrown around in history books. The writing in the show is overall amazing. But here and there, there is some over the top writing.
If Victoria could have Albert do it.....
As Queen Mary said. All sacrifice to the Crown. It must prevail.
You would think a scion of a failed monarchy would have gotten it. But, pride is a hard thing.
Albert and Victoria were not married at her coronation so this did not occur
I can't help but compare this show to ITV/PBS' "Victoria" ("The Crown" came out not long after, and they're both about British queens from the begining of their reign, surrounded by people thinking they're not up to the job - there's a lot of similarities!) and the one thing I never understood was why in "Victoria", Prince Albert is an incredibly proudful man, but still knows the difference between his wife and his queen, yet in "The Crown", 100 years later when equality has come on leaps and bounds, they've ramoed up Philip's pride to the point he won't even kneel to his queen, something the _real_ Philip would never have considered.... It's a really strange choice, and I don't get it.
If anyone was wondering, skip the last two seasons of game of thrones, its just this.
In an ideal world we would have a king consort, but we don't because that would confuse people so bow.
Not going to happen.
in an ideal world there would be no monarchies
In an ideal world, all the nations would be Realms.
The highest standard of a group of people possible, and all Realms treated as compatriots.
After all, Realms have the right to exist within its borders, and has the right to be heard on its opinions.
Nations do not, they have no right to exist within its borders, which is why wars occur so much, and leaders are toppled.
Monarchs have the right to reign, but their subjects have the right to point out when they are wrong. Anyone that does not recognise the Monarch has no right to do so.@@tomgachagan1347
You married an heir presumptive, and you knew that's what you were marrying when you said "I do." Now park that knee on the floor and deal.
couldn’t have said it better - “Phil” was a minor Royal but Royal none the less and knew better - his ego was always getting the better of him - “park that knee” indeed 👍
You married a queen, she's walks into a room you always bow down. It's out of respect for the queen.
It’s out of respect for the crown, not the person
This never happened, Philip would have understood this.
I don’t know why they didn’t film the queens reaction to the Charles Manson killings. She knew Sharon Tate she watched their wedding in London. I don’t know why they didn’t talk about how it made the queen feel she new Sharon Tate, so I don’t know why they especially having congrat her on her pregnancy why would they cut that out
You will bow to your lawful Sovereign!
Since House of the Dragon I only see Daemon Targaryen now 🐲😂
I can see why Philip had affairs. That would have been very difficult for any man during his time.
When you know why he has to kneel before his wife, it's the kind of difficult thing any man would have liked to experience. Any man, even those born in the 1920s.
Blaming his affairs on the fact he can’t kneel to a queen is bs, if it were the other way around he wouldn’t make an exception or think as husband & wife stand side by side. Men ego are too fragiel
@@tristancadwell786 🤣You're too funny. Kneel before me.
@@georgepierson4920ew
@@georgepierson4920 why would I kneel for a loser on yt?😂
If this is historically accurate, then Phillip was not qualified for the job he signed up for. Although it seems that Elizabeth adored him as her soulmate, he always seems to be making her job harder, rather than easier. Even her headstrong grandmother bows to her when George VI dies and she is now Queen. Phillip signs up to play the game, but then complains about the rules to whole time he’s playing.
I understand why TV show Phillip would struggle with a request like this. I don't think anyone would like the idea of showing public deference to their spouse. But a proud and stubborn man in an age where men were atill very much the head of their family would hate it even more. However, she was right to insist on it. She was a woman, a young, shy one at that, and had a lot to prove in the eyes of the people and her advisors. She needed to show that she was capable of commanding the respect that a Monarch usually receives.
I know, I know, it's a fictional scene. But as a fictional scene, it has liscence to use symbolism and metaphor to develop these characters.

I don’t believe that the queen could ever dare to ask the man to kneel who once threatened the queen to chuck her out of the car Bcz the queen was complaining him driving the car too fast! As far as I know Philip, he would have stopped talking to the queen almost forever, if she ever forced him to kneel! This scene is hard to believe, very well played though! 👌🏻

he was more royal then the queen so yeah naturally he didn't like it. as he was descended from royalty on both sides and she was descended from aristocracy and royalty
In the show, yeah. IRL this never happened. The Queen & The Duke of Edinburgh had their issues, but the show dials it up to 11.
@@Myne1001how do you know? The crown was right about the Queen throwing things at Philip as that really happened. So they obviously had a fiery relationship.
He was not more "royal" than the queen. Sure, both sides of his family were royalty, but the Greek royal family was very young compared to her ancestry stretching back a thousand years.
That's not even the point of this scene though.

Asking a man to bow to his wife or walk behind her was so wrong.
She's the Queen of England before being his wife. He's her subject like everybody else. He's acting like a child, asking to be treated differently.
why?
@@NHBoudy He should be treated differently, he's her husband. absolutely disgusting to force a partner to submit to your rule. Marriage is about partnership not domination.
I think you’re having trouble separating her as his wife and his queen. As his wife, she shouldn’t ask him to kneel before her because, as you’ve said, they are equal in their partnership. BUT, as his queen, she has every right to demand him to kneel before her because her station demands respect of all her subjects which includes him. It’s a lot like separating personal and professional relationships. Your boss may be your friend at work, but he’s still your boss. So, when he asks you to do something that you don’t necessarily like, it’s still your responsibility to do it without arguing. Think of it that way if it helps.

You don't make your partner ever feel beneath you. Maybe its the American in me that believes everyone should be treated equal, but making your partner bow to you no matter the position you hold is disgusting.
It's a monarchy and wives bow to their husbands when the husband is king. Everyone bows to the King or Queen. If she were to make an exception she would have appeared weak to other nations. She was telling him he is bowing to the crown. To the monarchy. The Real Philip understood this and did bow. In a monarchy everyone is not equal. There are titles to show each person's rank and the hierarchy. Her husband did understand this as well as everyone in the royal family. Most people in the nation understood this and he most certainly did since he was not a foreigner nor a commoner. Prince Philip was 18 when he started corresponding with 13 year old Elizabeth, heir to the crown. He understood.
