I think that Philip did cheat on the Queen with many women over the years. I doubt very much they ever had a conversation like this scene. Direct confrontation was not the Queen’s way. Strict marital fidelity is not the aristocratic way, especially for husbands. But recreational extracurricular activities were not viewed as being a threat to the marital relationship but coexisting with it. At least for the men. A double standard is in play for the wives. I think the queen knew about many of Phillips dalliances but pretended that she didn’t and in exchange he remained her Rock for 73 years. I think he loved her very much. It’s just that men don’t equate sex with love the same way women do. They can sample other wares outside the marital bed but if their hearts aren’t engaged, it truly means nothing to them. It’s like scratching an itch or eating when they are hungry. The physical need that is compelling in the moment but the minute it is satisfied it’s completely forgotten about. The queen was also incredibly busy and an extroverted sociable alpha man like Philip needed more attention then she could provide him. The queen and Philip had a very special connection. She never stopped looking at him the way she did in her engagement picture… Adoringly. They had four children. I love the pictures of her at Trooping the Color in 1964, holding 2 month old baby Edward. The queen looks so happy and Philip is also beaming. I don’t think that was all for public display but they were genuinely happy that day.
@@marywenzel3199 Well I do appreciate your thoughts but I think cheating is one of the most selfish and hurtful and actually hateful things a person could ever do to someone because it hurts them SO TERRIBLY. If someone truly and deeply loves someone...they would never cheat. I do agree most men do think that...but certainly not all do. But I think youre absolutely correct theres a double standard!
@@mattdavis1735 I absolutely agree that marital infidelity is a terrible betrayal. .. I couldn’t look the other way either. But moral codes are shall we say more flexible in the aristocracy. The idea that a man has a moral obligation to be faithful to his wife when his social station allows him to buy anything or anyone is what the aristos would Pooh Pooh as a “bourgeois” idea that does not apply equally to the masters of the universe. Yet they stand up in church and swear before God and man to be faithful. Hypocritical AF? You bet. But it was ever thus with Kings. Until the Victorian era at least, the King’s mistress was not only well known but she was a person of influence at court-at least until she lost favor and was replaced. Madam du Barry and Nell Gwynne wielded as much soft power as the legitimate Queen. When he was still a youth KCIII announced to his parents that he had no intention of being the first King in history not to have a mistress. He kept his word there at the expense of his wedding vows to a vulnerable young woman who’d already experienced divorce trauma in her birth family. (If Alan Bennett is telling the truth, the much reviled George III never was unfaithful to his Queen even after 15 children-and his doctors actually wondered if his lack of “recreational opportunities” had contributed to his difficulties!) Ridiculed for fidelity to his wife-that is the aristocratic code. I’m not down with this but it’s so common as to be accepted practice in the world Charles and Diana were raised in. Charles felt justified in carrying on with Camilla because most of his peers and role models were doing the same, to tacit acceptance. And he had made no secret of his feelings for Camilla to his elders who had forbid him ti marry her. In Charles’ mind that wasn’t sneaking around but a known fact. His remark at the engagement-“Whatever love means”-that so hurt Diana was Charles’ oblique attempt at honesty. He would not be forced into gushy sentiments he did not feel. To him the marriage was a business merger, a dynastic duty which as a dutiful son and heir he was fulfilling. His heart was still a free agent and belonged to Camilla. Evidently Camilla did not perceive Diana as a threat; her real rival was Lady Kanga Tryon, Royal mistress #2. Diana befriended Kanga on purpose which is pretty delicious. She hated Camilla so much that she had no problem sharing her husband with yet another woman if the other woman could get him away from Camilla. This is court intrigue for you, and Diana learned how to play the game. It would’ve been better for all concerned if Charles could’ve genuinely falling in love with his wife and been with only her. Failing that, I think he intended to stay married to her and make her his Queen while keeping his ladies on the side as had been accepted from all his predecessors. This arrangement was not tolerable to Diana and she made married life intolerable for the both of them. I empathize with her sense of betrayal but she ultimately forced Charles to divorce her. After she’d done it she immediately regretted the price she had to pay. I’ve recently read that even ER’s sainted father had a “special friend” who tended to physical needs the QM no longer could or wanted to after 2 difficult pregnancies and C-sections. QM was fully aware and actually thanked the lady for her attentions to her husband. If Diana had taken the same view, she might now be Queen. At a cost of course. There is always a cost. Diana rebelled against the status quo and paid with her life. She was not faithful to Charles either with many men, often married ones and/or employees of the Royal household. So, glass houses. She admitted herself that she was the first to cheat. It’s a sad sad tragic business that is still being played out today. Look at Harry
@@marywenzel3199 I just saw quite a few articles about Prince William and his possible mistress and remembered all that you said! Mary you are super informed about all this and I am just shocked that after knowing and experiencing all the hurt and pain that his mom went through, that William would do the same to Kate. Thanks for sharing!
@@mattdavis1735 Thanks. I imagine the most frustrating thing about being in the royal family is that the media and even commissioned biographical sources don’t tell the whole story. Or even necessarily the real story. William is a human man and I know that he dated quite a few girls besides Kate. He was quite serious about Jecca Craig Seeing as he blew off his cousin Peter’s wedding to attend the wedding of Jecca’a brother in South Africa which was occurring on the same day. That raise some eyebrows since the groom sister was William‘s old flame. Apparently it was on the Craig family estate where William popped the question to Kate with Diana‘s ring. So I would like to give him the benefit of the doubt that he can have married female friends in his circle that he is not sleeping with. Rose H is a near neighbor in Norfolk and her husband until the secession of king Charles was the lord chamberlain of England, a very important role at court. So it would be exceedingly weird not to mention difficult for William to completely avoid lord Rocksavage and his wife just to curtail speculation that he’s having an affair with Rose. We have to ask ourselves, cui bono? Who benefit the most from keeping these rose infidelity rumors stirred up? Sussex Court West comes to mind. They would like nothing better than to interfere in the Wales marriage and keep everybody miserable. I will only observe that narcissists attack their targets for the same “sins” which they themselves do. Certain couple in Montecito plays away from home all the time. And they wouldn’t think anything of making false accusations. It is very common for aristocratic men to have affairs. Philip did it, even the late queens father had a mistress. If all parties accept it it is not a threat to the marriage. I think William having gone through what he did with his parents would not be cavalier with his wife’s feelings or his children’s sense of security. If he got drunk one night and had an indiscretion… Well stuff happens when you’re drunk. That wouldn’t be an affair in the same way as Charles and Camilla. To Charles his credit he did publicly admit to the af fair, very publicly in a television interview in 1994. A decade after it started it was hardly shocking news but he owned up to it with quite a shocking amount of honesty. I think in his mind and in the social conventions of his circle, he did not consider the relationship with Camilla and His marriage as being mutually exclusive. Perhaps a selfish attitude but it really was the done thing. Duty to the crown and personal pleasure are separate things. I think Charles was aware of Diana’s many extracurricular friends but he accepted it. In return he expected the same consideration from her but she broke the unstated rule. She wanted Charles all to herself all the time as a form of control really and that’s not the way it works with kings. I’m not defending Charles and Camilla for being cruel to Diana But Diana made a deal to become princess of Wales and then decided to complain about the terms. She violated never complain never explain. She knew about Camilla in advance of the wedding and she went through with it anyway so it’s not like he sprung it on her after the fact. If she had played along and allowed him his friends, she would be queen today of this time very certain. What a different world we would be living in. William and Catherine’s marriage is ultimately between the two of them but Catherine had a decade to decide if she could live with the terms of being Royal and she decided that she could. That means sharing her husband and her life with the world media and potentially other women but I do not automatically Believe everything published about the royal family especially when it’s unflattering because there are anti-monarchists with agendas out there and they are having a field day today.
I wish they kept her through the whole series, with advancements with SFX makeup and CGI I'm sure they would've been able to age her accordingly. No shade to the other actresses but Claire was meant for this role.
Claire gives her so much strength through her pauses and looks. In that she gives dignity. But the follow-up era is still moving. As she matures the pressure must have been huge.
She would have been so much happier with Porchey...but she decided to go against good advice and stayed with the bad boy... IF ONLy she had given Porchey the benefit of the doubt I think she would have fallen so in love with him. He stayed a true loyal friend till the end.

@@LittlemissdirtbagIf that is true then it's all sick. Marriage in the monarchy or now, it's a view that they make with God to be faithful and they should honor it
Queen Elizabeth was tolerant and wise. The actual queen did not show any emotion as she was made to wait 30 minutes in the sun by ex-president Trump or walked in front of her in her country. I do not think any person can fill her shoes. She was a lady for all seasons.
The Queen Mother was a complete cow, had no desire to move out of Buckingham Palace when she was no longer the Queen and constantly interfered. She was known as a racist and a deeply unpleasant woman. She was described as never quite drunk, never quite sober. She had to lower her spending when she was no longer queen but spent huge amounts on entertaining, using the most expensive wines and champagnes, and left her daughter with millions of pounds of debt when she died. There was a subtle change in the Queen when her mother died. The bright colours that she started wearing. Her amazing sense of humour that no-one was aware of while her mother was alive. Do you think she could have done the Paddington skit and the James Bond skit while her mother was still alive?
@@Rosemary-vf5ei There is no doubt that if anyone crossed her then they would get the steely stare. However, the country owed her a huge debt as a result of her support of the King during the war years along with her own individual contribution. What makes this scene all the more sad in that the real life Prince Philip's will was not made public after he died like all over royal wills in order to "Protect the Queen's dignity" meaning that he properly left money to some of his mistresses or love children....😕😕
The sad truth of this series is that so many viewers believe it's all true. The show is a fictional series based on assumptions, dramatisation, suppositions, rumors, etc. One can only speculate reality, but most are quick to judge and believe, because it makes for good entertainment, especially when things are bad.
It's so bizarre and interesting to think of Queen Elizabeth as a young woman with relationship and jealousy problems. I've always thought of her as a static caricature which obviously isn't true.
You know I never really noticed this before but I just realized that Claire Foy reminds me quite a bit of Jami Gertz when she portrayed Dr. Melissa Reeves in Twister.
Whether this is true or not it points out the obvious between these two: She was much smarter than he was. That must have been terribly frustrating for Philip. His wife outranked him, was more important than him, and he had to realize she was more intelligent than him as well.
According to the fairy tale books, they started writing when she was 13 and he 18 and he fell in love. Yes, a handsome career navy man fell in love at 18 to a 13 plain jane. No one knew she would be Queen, but she would have some title and house and money. He was extraordinary handsome. His uncle kinda pushed him. She couldn't have been that naive by this point in the marriage.
No, not scandalous in and of themselves, but Ward was tied to unsavory people and was caught up in a nasty espionage/call girl ring. The Palace wouldn’t have wanted Prince Phillip anywhere near that situation.
@@calwells5612 ok that makes sense the way Elizabeth and Philip were talking about it , it gave the impression that portraits were very naughty portraits and that palace seized them to make sure there weren't rumors of Phillip being gay or something

My Nanna and Grandad always said there were rumours about Philips infidelities. Most people seemed to know from the highborn to the working class. How he actually dared, if indeed he did, is beyond me. Did he believe the most powerful woman in the land wouldn't find out?
Dr. Stephen Ward arranged introductions of high level men in government to nubile willing young ladies. After being convicted of living off the earnings of prostitution, He took his own life by an overdose of barbiturates. He was an artist also. And if I could just quickly add....what I think makes this scene so heartbreaking...she finally realizes that she loves him so much more than he ever does for her...😢 I think her heartbreaking look at the end there says it all......
1:12 I like how Phillip reacts. He cannot be ignored and he knows it
Silence can speak volumes (on both their parts) and that was a very long stare when he was looking down.
The Parfumo affair without saying the Parfumo affair. Fantastic acting!!
I wish they kept her through the whole series, with advancements with SFX makeup and CGI I'm sure they would've been able to age her accordingly. No shade to the other actresses but Claire was meant for this role.
Good idea!
CGI's not even needed, they successfully aged Anne-Marie Duff as Elizabeth I in The Virgin Queen back in 2005. It was extremely convincing.
The scilence at the end says it all
He is straight up lying. He thinks it’s to protect her. But it’s to protect himself. He always thought he was smarter than her.
Claire gives her so much strength through her pauses and looks. In that she gives dignity. But the follow-up era is still moving. As she matures the pressure must have been huge.
"Steven Ward".
(Phillip nervously rubs his fingers and thumbs)
"😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅".
They are both so good. And silence is used incredibly effectively here.
She would have been so much happier with Porchey...but she decided to go against good advice and stayed with the bad boy... IF ONLy she had given Porchey the benefit of the doubt I think she would have fallen so in love with him. He stayed a true loyal friend till the end.
Queen Elizabeth loved Prince Philip through it all.........
My goodness, that’s a lot of words just to say, “are you cheating on me”.

In real life, when Queen Elizabeth discovers that she is pregnant with her fourth child, she also discovers that Felipe cheated on her with many women.
@JocobusHelmans Didn't cheat ? Just a ladies man ? Ohhhhh puleaaaaase.
Matt Smith and Claire Foy cast in The Crown to portray Prince Phillip and Queen Elizabeth … was brilliant casting! As was their performance! 🎭
I don't think calling what Claire Foy does in this scene acting is sufficient. She is emoting deep feelings and transfers them right into the viewer, mostly through her eyes. Amazing.
Actors really are some of our greatest creative artists.
@@hank1519 The good ones are.
@@AmericasChoice Exactly!
She did such an amazing job i really enjoyed watching her and him playing the queen and the duke as they were younger ❤
Their chemistry is on point.
She literally picked him up from the gutter. A lost Prince of a country that didn't want him or his linage. He could've at least have been faithful.
it is a known historical fact or is this poetic license of a work of fiction based on reality?
I'm not making a statement, I'm asking a question. But the question is... is this a known historical fact, not is this an individuals viewpoint and opinion.
@chandie5298 The world won't know for 100 years. The Queen's diarys are sealed. They will release them in 2122. Long after we all are dead and buried.
He was. This is literally for the show to have any drama whatsoever.
The show is a fictional series based on assumptions, dramatisation, suppositions, rumors, etc. One can only speculate reality.
As he explained to one question, his security detail was with him at all times. He was never alone where he had an opportunity to be “unfaithful “! Please provide your proof.
I feel so much for Elizabeth in this scene... I been there ♥️
Claire Foy is the next Meryl Streep.
This is my favorite scenes in the entire series.
I realize the crown is fiction based on historical events but I can absolutely see Her Majesty doing this with Prince Phillip. We know they were married for 70 + years but I'm sure it wasn't all roses. That's any marriage really. Her Majesty was a truly amazing woman.
I worked with a guy who was Prince Philips private driver for 12 years. Most of his private trips were to his long term mistress Lady Penny something. It was widely thought by staff that the Queen knew, but kept him on a long leash. Years later I met a woman whose husband was also a driver for the Royals & she said her husband had said the same ee the longterm mistress.
I hope that wasn't the experience Queen Elizabeth endured RIP
Nice. Keep it coming with the crown videos.
I am not merely your wife… I am The Queen. How dare you think to keep such a thing from me.
A wife is not a "mere" thing to be
One of her ancestors would might have seen this as treason and had his head removed. 😮
I wonder if she ever thought about that.
Even Henry would need a trumped up charge before taking a man head off
Have you got some music at the end that does not entirely destroy the atmosphere of the clips you post?
YES. Thanks for pointing that out. Now, we can both hope they'll do something about it.
Love the acting by both of them Claire is an extraordinary actress and so is Matt
But those were very private meetings of the Queen and Philip, so these are speculations by the series writer's good ones, but they are fictional historically accurate moments on a scene
Just masterful work by everyone involved in this series production cheers!
I already respected her; but this show has made me realize how much she sacrificed for her country:(
All he does is complain and does things behind her back as a young husband. Then accuses her of being too friendly with the old friend in charge of managing her horses businesses. Her father warned him she would become his whole job after she became Queen and was warned. So for the lifestyle he was entering he’d better want it.
Splendid acting.
Matt and claire had real moments together.
You cut off the ending. Why??????
God not even the Queen of England was enough for a man
This was one of the best scenes in the entire series
I wouldn't want to mess with Claire Foy as queen, sounds like she has a hot temper. Tsk Tsk Prince Philip, messing around with a ballerina, you are with a queen isn't that enough for you? Sigh men, never know how good they have it sometimes.
It’s never enough for any man. A lot of time men see women in high places & the cheat to try and humble them.
@@misssincere5762 wow, good point
You’re not thinking the way men think. Social position matters very little to us in terms of who we find attractive. A ballerina may well be much higher than a queen.
@@christianandrew1037but y’all are the same ones always asking women what they bring to the table. Men swear just being hot isn’t enough so you need to brings other stuff but you just said that the extras don’t matter. So which is it?
@@LoveK1see, and this is what you just don’t get, you always think “she’s so hot THAT should be enough!” And then “she’s so accomplished THAT should be enough!” And you also have it in your minds that “having the wettest pussy” (a attribute that I hear young women say WAY TOO OFTEN in videos and podcasts lately as why men should want them) are all things that truly matter. And you completely leave out two things, the most important things that are still there long after looks fade and sex gets boring, personality and character. Two things that many women lack. They think personality is “I like dogs and pizza and crime shows!” They build personality around things, usually popular things, or try desperately to be “unique” when there’s nothing unique about it. And character… well, yeah. Most just don’t have any. I’m sure you couldn’t even tell me what character means and what it is.
Matt Smith has exactly one expression.

Shudda married Porchy like everyone told you to.

No, she loved Philip, they got through all this and had a lifetime together.
They never marry the guys that really love them. Always the trash!
So a marriage with no love?
@@therenegade916 You wouldn't know - in S1 Episode 9 and 10, something could definitely have blossomed between Elizabeth and Porchy, especially since he is ever so fond of her. Elizabeth herself admitted she would probably have been happier with Porchy but despite everything, her heart still belongs to Phillip.
After all, we don't get to choose who fall in love with, even if this person has done nothing BUT hurt us.
She done checkmated you!
Philip was gifted a luxurious life where he did not have to work and everything was handed to him on a plate. I read that when he entered the family and married Elizabeth, he had very little money in his pocket and yet he died a millionaire.
I hated Philip during these seasons. If any of this really DID happen he didn’t deserve her and never understood what being with her truly meant for him to be with her with who she was and was going to be in the society that they were in.
There's no evidence any of it happened, there were some tabloids but even they admitted it probably didn't happen.
Most members of the royal family had people on the side. They weren't regular couples. They weren't in regular marriages. The monarchy is a totally different system. It's just the way it is and it's nothing to be really surprised about. Even William has a side piece.
Queen: "I am strong".
Lord Mountbatten: "A queen who proclaim herself strong, is no true strong."
4:08 what does this mean????, i didn’t get it
Throughout her life, The Queen Mother was never comfortable with him.
What kind of a lifestyle would you have a former Queen Empress lead, perhaps consigned to sheltered accommodation? Of all the Queen Consorts throughout history she is up there with the best.
It's okay then; he was Princess (Queen) Elizabeth's husband, not hers.
What makes this scene all the more sad in that the real life Prince Philip's will was not made public after he died like all over royal wills in order to "Protect the Queen's dignity" meaning that he properly left money to some of his mistresses or love children....😕😕
Suddenly struck me how Smith’s ‘stooping’ is echoed later by O’Connor.. Also, at the end, Foy’s alteration of facial expression..

The late queen? Was an incredible woman!!
Why were the portraits of Philip so scandalous, were they indecent or something
No, not scandalous in and of themselves, but Ward was tied to unsavory people and was caught up in a nasty espionage/call girl ring. The Palace wouldn’t have wanted Prince Phillip anywhere near that situation.
@@calwells5612 ok that makes sense the way Elizabeth and Philip were talking about it , it gave the impression that portraits were very naughty portraits and that palace seized them to make sure there weren't rumors of Phillip being gay or something
Ward was caught up in a huge scandal and that hand drawn portrait linked Phillip to Ward...therefore linking Phillip to the scandal.
Sounds like some form of organized crime like the Epstein's.
I got that impression from the spy/art expert when Phillip confronted him at that gala, and he admitted to being involved in tracking them down. It did make it sound like there was something very unsavory about them.
Claire Foy is incredible.

Dr. Stephen Ward arranged introductions of high level men in government to nubile willing young ladies. After being convicted of living off the earnings of prostitution, He took his own life by an overdose of barbiturates. He was an artist also. If he drew numerous portraits of the very handsome DoE and had a platonic arrangement with two girls living in his home, I surmise he was probably homosexual.
