      It's not a crown, but a Princely Coronet normally reserved for sons and daughters of the Sovereign. The same Coronet is also currently used by the Duke of York, the Princess Royal, and the Earl of Wessex. You will see these Coronets being worn at the next Coronation.

      The Type 2 Princely Coronet worn by Prince Philip here is four ranks higher than a ducal coronet, and consequently in design is vastly different. For the different designs of princely and peerage coronets, see here: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coronet

    Everyone taking a dig at Philip needs to remember he was born a Prince of Greece and Denmark. His Grandfather was King of Greece and Philip was in line to rule, but due to revolution he had to flee his homeland at the age of 4. His Grandfather was killed as were many of his uncles. He gave up all his titles in order to marry Elizabeth and in doing so he went from being a respected member of a Royal family to being seen as a beggar prince by most of the Royal Household in Britain. You can't blame him for wanting the recognition that was his birthright.

    • @ds1868
      @ds1868 6 лет назад +1048

      That is a fair point. There is no doubt he was treated with suspicion by the British Establishment, including King George VI. When the King conferred all the various titles on Prince Philip before his marriage in 1947, including the style 'His Royal Highness', Philip wasn't actually made a Prince of the United Kingdom. He was 'HRH Philip, Duke of Edinburgh KG'. As noted before, he had to wait until 1957 before he was finally made a Prince of the United Kingdom.

    • @frenchtea4682
      @frenchtea4682 6 лет назад +852

      Exactly! Everyone is saying how arrogant he is or how he is acting like a man child, but Philip had endured much hardships as you said, and as a born monarch whether in Britain or not, having been married into the British Royal Family he should at least be bestowed with a title that puts him above just being branded as the Queen's husband (or course not above the Queen or their son Charles). I am sure anyone here would feel powerless or like they stand out in a useless way if they were married into a royal family but not really treated like a member of the family aside from living with them. The man just wanted to feel more like he is useful over being a useless comfort figure who must always follow The Queen everywhere.

    • @ds1868
      @ds1868 6 лет назад +475

      It is worth pointing out that when Prince Philip was made a Prince of the United Kingdom, he was also given precedence over his eldest son Prince Charles, a position he still holds today.

    • @northchurch753
      @northchurch753 6 лет назад +231

      Namikan Ye and the fact that the British Government knew he had sisters who were married to Nazis likely played a role. Sure there were those moments of his where he was acting rather immature, but in hindsight of his past it's understandable as to why he complained as much as he did. It's kind of a situation where you would need to think of yourself in his shoes growing up as a Prince who very nearly lost everything.

    The Queen looks very reluctant to give him the title of Prince, but he had to renounce all foreign royal titles when he married Elizabeth. He went from being a Prince of Greece and Denmark one day, to being an ordinary Lieutenant in the Royal Navy.
    He was then made Duke of Edinburgh by King George VI. He was essentially doing the duties of a Prince of the United Kingdom without the title for ten years. Phillip might come across like a prick, but he earned the title.

It is always Mr and Mrs Jack Brooksbank instead of Jack and Eugenie Brooksbank. She also gave up her last name. She will always be seen as an adjunct to him instead of a person on her own right. Heck I have a husband who has had eighteen brain surgeries and is in a wheelchair but if we go in to a store or restaurant they ask him not me "how can we help you?" it is like I am not even standing there. And when I answer it is like I just grew two heads. And don't get me started on how patronizing men can be if you are pregnant. Phillip is a very proud man in an era where the man is still supposed to be the head of the household. And he's married to the Queen. THE QUEEN. His children don't even have his surname. Now by modern day standards it would probably not be a huge deal, but he must have felt some degree of de-masculation and shame at the time. And to top it off everyone hates him and thinks he's petulant, even though he has made several sacrifices to be with Elizabeth. I bet it drove him bonkers.

    I'm setting aside the fact that it's probably not at all historically or realistically accurate, and focusing on the narrative. Here, he is portrayed as finally getting what he's been whining about, an equal footing, being made a prince and having all the titles, but realizing that nothing has really changed still. And he looks like a child who has whined and whined until the exhausted parents have given in, but still give him the patronizing looks. This scene...it's hard to put into words, because it portrays in cinematography what words can't.

      His problem was the entourage at court, not necessarily the family, the Queen Mother was perfectly fine with Phillip, and so was Margaret - it was some of the courtiers and government people who kinda turned their noses at Phillip because even being a Duke doesn't afford the same sort of respect - by becoming Prince, he is forcing them to essentially have to listen and be beholden to him, they can no longer dismiss him, he will always have to be respected ---- if he couldn't get their respect the right way, then he will literally force it by outranking them

      She ESPECIALLY fought against him when he wanted his children and the Royal House to have his name.
      And Phillip dreaded going to live in Buckingham Palace because the Queen Mother at the time, still lived there and the Queen Mother’s won friend told her that she believed they were trying to freeze her out after her room became cold and void of anything inside of it.

    It's amazing how people came to regard him because Phillip has a waaaay more impeccable lineage than Elizabeth. A descendant of Queen Victoria of Great Britain, King Christian IX of Denmark, Tsar Nicholas I of Russia and various German princes, Phillip is a prince by birth and by blood. By contrast, Elizabeth is only half royal. He was approved of for her because of his impeccable lineage and no throne of his own to inherit. And it wasn't just his royal titles that he had ti give up, but his actual career. Phillip had an outstanding naval career, had men under his command and was rising fast. All of that came to stop when King George died. Phillip lost all that he was, and forever to be simply the queen's consort.

She was born daughter of a prince (prior to Edwards abdication) and a minor Scottish noble. Philips lineage included the royal houses of Greece and Denmark as well as the Russian Tsars, by right of blood he outranked everyone there. And he had a stellar career in the Navy, being seen as one of the most promising commanders in a generation.

    It was important to re-establish his title as a Prince, which he fundamentally gave up to be with Elizabeth. Regardless if the establishment liked it or not, they had a Son together, who was a Prince and eventual King - To feel unequal to your wife is one thing, but forced by political outsiders to become unequal to that of your family also, would have been emotionally isolating for him. I’m not sure the Queen was at all unhappy about doing this, as portrayed in The Crown - It was simply the right thing to do to protect herself, her family and quite possibly Royalty itself.

      He was a prince of Greece and Denmark.
      He had to renounce his foreign style,title
      and rank to be married into the British
      royal family.
      During WW1 (1917) King George V. made
      it illegal for any member of the British
      royal family to hold a foreign "style"
      (HRH -- His/her royal highness) or
      a foreign title or a foreign rank
      (military honorary or for real)
      Prince Philp renounced his Greek
      HRH, Greek title and his Greek
      citizenship as well as Angelizing
      his name to "Mountbatten" in
      1947 before he married Elizabeth.
      He was given the British title of
      Duke of Edinburgh by Elizabeth's
      father (George vi.) the day of their
      wedding.
      In this video set in 1957 he was given
      the royal style of HRH as a prince of
      the UK.
      Personally, I think that should have
      happened back in 1947 done by
      King George vi before his marriage
      After all his mother and maternal
      grandmother were British Princesses.
      In 1917
      Saxe-Coburg-Gotha -- became --> Windsor
      Teck -- became --> Cambridge
      Battenburg -- became --> Mountbatten.
      All Germans who had British honorary
      styles, titles and ranks had those
      revoked.
      Prince Phillp's 4 sisters had married
      Germans between WW1 and WW2
      And, their husbands had become
      Nazis. In
      the 1920's when his sisters married
      German nobles NOBODY thought
      that there would be another war.
      The German Emperor had lost
      his throne. But the German
      nobles still had their large
      estates. But they were not allowed

    This scene does a wonderful job of making Philip look petty. There he is, in all that finery but wearing the unmistakeable scowl of an unruly child, standing next to a woman and before a crowd of people who have dressed up and gathered there at his behest, but it hasn’t changed anything. They don’t look at him with renewed respect. They see him as they always saw him.

She is his queen bestowing upon him a high honour. He stands with the crown and sceptre, tall and proud. and as he sits down his expression changes. Almost like a little boy as he meets the disapproving stares of the establishment.

    A lot of the comments point to how Philip was born a prince of Greece and Denmark and how he had to give up his titles to marry Elizabeth and this scene is simply taking back what was rightfully his. However, there is a lot to unpack here. Many did not approve of him because he "wasn't good enough". Even though he is a prince of both Denmark and Greece, the context of both countries is relevant here. As Queen Mary puts it in one of the episodes, Philip represents a monarchy lasting 90 years which pertains to Greece in which his grandfather was chosen to be King. But, the royal family of Greece was deposed and they, the royal family, had to flee the country. Furthermore, his great grandfather, Christian IX, the King of Denmark, came from a minor branch of their royal house. Thus, their direct line was not considered as important or significant as Elizabeth's ancestry that descends from all previous monarchs of the UK/England. So, despite his titles as prince of both countries, the context of it all is still considered lacking to marry the future queen of UK. Many of Philip's relatives, particularly his older sisters who married German soldiers, also had ties to the Nazi which was frowned upon by many. So, these are the reasons why the British aristocracy in this scene looks at Philip as someone who they still do not see as an equal. However, The Crown is still fiction so we can't really interpret all scenes shown as if they are facts. :)
