There's one line in Edward VIII's death episode I really hate. Olivia Coleman says that he was her favourite uncle which seems like a bit of a kick in the balls to the duke of Gloucester who, unlike Edward VIII, was a loyal and very active part of the Royal Family until his death. I did think it was weird there was no mention of the dukes of Gloucester and Kent in the entire show, despite them having very rich histories and active roles in the monarchy. They had time for mentally ill cousins, tampongate and to make up a storyline suggesting Prince Phillip was unfaithful but not for Prince williams death, any mention of either of the dukes of Gloucester or the duke of kent becoming so at the age of 6 and his mothers cousin being prince phillip.
To Edward's credit, he stayed married to Wallis until his death. If they had divorced, what little shred of dignity remained in his legacy would have disappeared.
True, like this she had never ending money supply and he had the tale of his "brave" choice for love...when in reality his mingling with the wrong people forced him to abdicate.
@@calistafalcontail that's an ahistorical re-justification using modern moral sensibilities. Back then, the marriage prospect alone was enough to raise a constitutional crisis - Nazi sympathies were far less scandalous.
Yes but she was very unhappy. But I believe she felt like she couldn’t leave because he’d given up the crown for her. Evidently a huge gesture like that which felt very flattering at the time, trapped her in an unhappy marriage for life. He was obsessed with her of course.
@@pplesandoranges Some historians think the marriage prospect was a convenient excuse to get rid of him due to concerns about the pro-nazi stance, others think the pro-nazi concerns reinforced the decision to insist on abdication after it became clear Edward would give up the throne for Wallis. The Queen had mixed emotions. I believe that she was thrilled to take that incredible job, but she was very emotional because she didn't expect to be Queen as young as she was. She loved her father and she wanted him to hold onto life for a little bit longer. She was only 25 years old when she became Queen she was still a baby herself. She went from Princess Elizabeth to Queen Elizabeth II in a blank of an eye. She did not stop serving her kingdom. The day that she died was when she stopped serving that UK. She kept her promise ❤❤❤😢😢😢😢
The annoying is the most sacred part of the ceremony. I turned it down for love. Wallis and Edward's love story is the greatest love story of the 1900 ever. Modern fairytale.
I don’t know about you guys - but I would absolutely LOVE that prequel series Peter Morgan is contemplating doing for Netflix! These early years were some of the best seasons of The Crown.
A study in contrasts: A man whose pride, self-satisfaction, whinging sense of entitlement, and lack of loyalty narrates the scene of a young woman picking up a gilded cross, her face set like flint for the carrying of it, and a young man laying down his pride to pledge fealty, laying down his future in the knowledge that "she's the job." Sure, there's fictionalization going on; but the objective facts are the bones under the retelling, and this rendering presents the contrast -- and teaches the lesson -- all too clearly, for those with eyes to see. Amazing, then, that some still think England would've been better off if a Nazi sympathizer, and the lover he shared with the German ambassador, had reigned, merely because he was "more modern" for thinking _being in love_ obviates all other duties and commitments. Such misguided persons would benefit from tutelage under Tommy Lascelles, I think.
When Kathleen Kennedy aka "Kick" married William Cavendish Marquess Of Hartington in 1944, her Brother Joe thought he would have some sort of royal title. He didn't get it and sadly he died four months after their marriage as did Joe and both died in fighter pilot missions.
The glove is put on after being invested with the soverign's ring which goes on the right hand. The clip has a double mistake. It has the ring over the gove and it is the ring of the Queen consort not that of the monarch.
The British monarchy often feels like an elaborate costume party where the guests haven’t quite realized the theme has changed. Clinging to centuries-old traditions, it’s as if the royals are still living in a world where hereditary privilege is the norm and lavish ceremonies are a daily necessity. While modern societies move towards inclusivity and meritocracy, the monarchy seems to be stuck in a historical time warp, dusting off rituals that are more about maintaining an outdated spectacle than addressing contemporary issues. In a time when transparency and relatability are valued, the monarchy's grandiose displays and exclusive nature might seem more like quaint relics than essential institutions.
And that's what makes it wonderful. Literally. Wonder-full. It's a timeless, disconnected thing, representing an eternal constant, unchanging and unwavering through the centuries. A thread that stretches, almost unbroken, if you take into account the silliness around a certain Mr. Cromwell, from William the Conqueror, to here Elizabeth II.
In that exact same moment in history, starvation and extreme poverty was taking place in remote places on earth, and to this very day, it still does. That contrast is why so many doubt God and resent him.

Really how about Sarah palin? Michelle Bachman, Ann coulter, Ana Cortez, ilhan Omar, Hillary Clinton? How about Oprah Winfrey or judge Judy? No, just a leader….. Gender doesn’t matter. If you think only women can represent women, only gay people can represent gays, only minorities can represent minorities etc…….. Then you’re separating these groups and further dividing people that are already divided. The suffragists marched to say that women are the same as men and deserve equal treatment. Civil rights movement marched to say that skin colour is not important, black people are the same as white and deserve equal rights. Gay rights movement marched to say that lgbt people are the same as straight people and deserve equal rights. Why are the “progressives” of today trying to undo all of that. Dr king said skin colour isn’t important. Modern activists say skin colour is the most important thing about you. Which of those messages do you think are healthier.
The British monarch is hand-picked by God to reign. As the Sovereign and Head of State, this is a divine right that is consecrated in the anointment, the crowning, the oath, and the communion. God is British. And it is God who is transcended into a mortal chosen to reign supreme over his or her people. 🇬🇧 🏴 🏴 🏴 👑
BY god? No, by constant conquest, consolidation, the right marriages, the right decisions, and politicking. They failed once during the 17th century, and they can do so again. They have seen their cousins fail many times and know they need the idea of being godly chosen yet with the people, yet so far to keep the power. You miss the point of the scene, its the pageantry that helps keep it going. Not some divine power created that conception.
The script writers chose the uncle who betrayed the family and the country describing the scene. that's ironic.
Even a broken clock is right twice a day hehe

a fantastic narrative decision. especially considering he’s been brought to tears by his own patriotic fervor by the end of the episode
It's counterpoint. We all know the tune of "God Save the Queen."

Why does Prince Phillip look so resentful? It's not like he didn't know what he was getting into
He was expecting to have a more active role, like Queen Victoria's husband Prince Albert.
@@cg8397Victoria was already crowned as queen before marrying Albert. So he was never in this exact same position.
Probably because their relationship will forever be different
Also her Family kept their power and his Family lost his. If they were a Hollywood Couple, he'd be known as Mr. Elizabeth Windsor Wales.
Probably because now his wife is the boss, and he's going to have to kneel down before her (at 3:30). A little uncomfortable for any man.
What a truly great series. So well done.
