Prince Philip didn't hesitate in reality but I will say Matt does an exceptional job here. Almost had me believing Prince Philip had a problem with the idea of kneeling before his Queen. And in the show when he does, the look of betrayal and hurt in his eyes as he does kneel because he knows he has to, but shouldn't have to.
Oh, I believe Phillip had a problem with it alright, he just didn’t let it on publicly. As masculine as he is…..oh yeah, I def believe he had a problem with it. Courtiers will lie and say he didn’t. But what the hell do they know?! They have a vested interest in lying through their teeth and protecting the crown. Don’t believe the “official” words on that from the palace. The palace lies too. The Royal Family truly didn’t like him and didn’t want her to marry him, cause he was German. They subjected Philip to all kinds of second class bullshit. Probability is more likely than not that Phillip had a big problem with it. He gave up EVERYTHING for that woman. His life, his titles, his NAME, what made him a MAN, his career. He was a public cuckold and everyone knew it including Elizabeth.
Oh I believe Phillip absolutely did have a problem kneeling to Elizabeth. In reality, in front of all the cameras, in public, he did it, but they had blazing fights cause of it behind the scenes too. People choose to ignore the fact that Elizabeth had problems with Philip from the beginning of their marriage. They had to agree to never divorce, they did indeed want to . I do believe Phillip had other women as a concession in his marriage. That was about the only concession Elizabeth could allow him. Phillip and Elizabeth weren’t together all that much. So Elizabeth allowed him to cheat on her, just to keep him happy. They all knew it. It was a necessary concession to keep that marriage together.
@@destinywhite2063 interesting. I'm reading several autobiographies on him and not once has he mentioned any hostility towards Elizabeth. They certainly had their fights, but who doesn't in a marriage. I'm sure he cheated too, but the books are saying out of loneliness and frustration. Everyone is entitled to their opinion and in the long run we will never know.
This is all fine for manufactured TV drama but in reality Philip would have appreciated the difference between kneeling to his sovereign versus kneeling to his wife.
Who cares not everything should or will stay the same it was never meant to be that way, so most rules along with the the fact that there may no longer be a monarchy one day because honestly what they do but take money from the people and not put it where it should go but to line their own pockets, truth hurts
Her own mother would have done it. She used to curtsy to her. As the Queen Mum aged it was more like a token bob but irl she curtsied deeply on official occasions
I would not have kneeled. As an American, I put little value in inherited privilege. I would not have wanted her to bow to me either. And as for a 1000-year tradition, well, cheating with mistresses and beheading rivals seems to have been royal traditions too...does that make it right? Being a married spouse conveys a special privilege...I want her standing beside me, not beneath me.
He could stand with me, slightly behind, having knelt and sworn allegiance. Because I am Queen Regnant and he is my Consort. If the positions were reversed, he’d be fine with her kneeling to him. It isn’t the person/spouse you’re kneeling and swearing allegiance to, it is the crown worn by the monarch to whom you owe allegiance. I imagine when Kamala Harris is sworn in as president there will be those who just cannot bear to address her as Madam President, or rise when she enters the room. That shows a personality which is not to be admired
@@jandrews6254 I have to disagree with several points. For one, you're assuming that KH will win the election. Well maybe she will and maybe she won't...unless you have a magic crystal ball then you don't know and can only assume/wish/hope/whatever. But whoever wins will do so by an electoral process and not by simply being born into the right family. I also have a problem with the presumption that, in this modern era, I somehow "owe" an allegiance attained simply by birth and not by earning due to a vote or by skills. One last thing...the last time I heard marriage vows, there was an allegiance (of a sort) made by each to each and sworn to "in the presence of God". As it seems to happen so often throughout history, Christens (or so-called Christens) will espouse and obey the Bible until it becomes convenient not to do so and cherry-pick which precepts to go with and which to ignore or purposely misinterpret. I mention the religious angle because I believe the King/Queen is supposed to also be the head of the Anglican Church.
Phillip was Greek, not an American. And as a member of the Greek Royal Family he would have been fully aware of the cost of privilege. Remember this is a dramatization, based loosely on fact. There is no evidence that these conversations actually took place.
@@greghill7759 I agree. He would not have the same cultural aversions as I have. And being a dramatization, we can't really go by what the TV show shows. I would not be surprised at all if the kneeing-thing, in real life, had been talked out and agreed upon before the marriage.
Remember, marriage is a series of compromise, as long as you never compromise your core values!

Those royals sure love to argue about everything. Inside their house must suck.
Why would you just watch the video just to criticize that doesn't make any sense

Wouldn’t he have knelt before his parents, as king and queen?
No wonder QEI didn’t marry!
I am gaining more and more respect for Matt Smith as I watch these clips from The Crown
Good for Prince Phillip
asking her to change 1000 years of tradition lol like QEII would ever do that...not the coronation...literally the most important day for any monarch

She is the job the Queen 👑
Which really doesn’t say anything about her
What great drama. It is very hard to hear "I am the Queen first and your wife, second."
He was kneeling for his Queen not his wife.
I think the only one you should kneel to is God
You "kneel" every time you pay taxes, princess.
@seth4887 not doing it
