I love that you did this. Thanks. I feel like the changes make it less of an “always on/foundation” thing and more like a high gain amp channel. I’ve got the silver one and it appears that’s the one I want.
I tuned in to hear the comparison, but the Custom Shop LP captivated me! Great top and color. I prefer the original DLS. It's sounds more like what I expect a real Marshall SL to sound like.
This is one of the few pedals that I plugged into at a guitar store and was blown away with straight out of the gate. Exactly what I was looking for at the time. ...I probably should buy one.
As a proud owner of a DLS Mark III, I’ve been stacking it with the TC electronic dark matter distortion, mojo mojo overdrive, and spark booster for several years. Andy Martin himself was the reason for me to get one when he was still with Proguitarshop, and I will admit when Howard was still in the company. I remember hearing when I think Catalinbread’s owner Nicolas tragically died along with Proguitarshop’s Aaron Miller. I’ve checked out from the guitar world largely by the time I’m guessing the Lawsuit happened as the comments described. Regarding the pedals’ differences, Andy once again, makes me want to buy the red version because he demos it so well. The main difference I will simply say is this: the original sounds just like mine in super lead mode which I typically use and is basically the classic 70s Marshall sound with 800-ish max gain. The red version is a JCM 800 taking the same gain structure and design of the original, with the tighter low-end, and clearer, crunchy mid range of a JCM 800.
Coming back to this…it looks like on the red they took out a lot of bass. That was a complaint I saw online awhile back on forums. To me that’s its secret weapon on the grey one. If you have Fender or chimey amp, crank the mids, bass over what the Fender is set to and highs down a bit…it sounds like a different amp! The Red one sounds like a profile of the old pedal, but less bass and more TubeScreamer like the more gain you dial in. Red for metal amps I’d think. And Grey for smaller Fender cabs, that need that bass boost. Vs the scooped lows and upper mids.
@@Yountica yep… that bass is great and I treat it like another amp channel. That way I can set a great classic tone with normal EQ. Then the EQ on the DLS kicks in like I switched to another amp vs a pedal sound. Some complain, because they expected an OCD style pedal. But it can make a 1x12 or 2x12 sound like a big bassy Marshall switchover. Love that! I don’t want my EQ to stay the same on those types of pedals. Idea is to make the listener think it’s a completely different amp. I use mine to mimic a Big Marshall, or Ampeg VT40 vs hauling an extra amp out. It’s one of the only marshals style pedals I tested that did the low chunky thing very well! I just knock down the treble a good bit on a fender or Vox on the pedal. Crank that mid and bass!
I use my original DLS with a Tone King Imperial and I've always had a little to much bass, having to keep bass control pretty much on zero. Sounds like CATALINBREAD knows this.
I have a the same amp and been looking for a pedal like this to go on the clean channel that works well…this one has been highly recommended for working with the amp. But the base MK3 seems closer to what would work. The red one sounds more shrill and we know to not do that lol. The Imperial has a lot of bass already. I run it at 5 with treble at 3-4 for most. But with this would have to roll back on pedal or do a louder volume on amps which I keep bass at 3.
Fab demo thanks! Great to here some UFO/Schenker in there! ❤ I also love the Ibanez Artist. I'm guessing 2619 from the late 70s? I have one! Great guitars!
@@AndyDemos Good man! It was a cut above the usual standard of YT demos and very much appreciated. (I'm thinking of starting a YT channel featuring Japanese guitars from that period: Aria PE series, Washburns, Westones, the criminally under-rated Yamaha SF series, et al.)
Nice as that custom shop Les Paul is, I really miss the desert burst Trad, that was one of Andy's signatures! I think I preferred the red version here, works well with the mid-scooped blackface clean although the stock version had some nice fuzz to it.
I just ordered the catalinbread dirty little secret foundation overdrive pedal in silver from Sweetwater gear . Can't wait to use it on Les Paul . 🤘🎸🎵🎶🎶🎶 Thanks TroyFrost / Troyster 😎 CoolRiffs😎 Cool🎸 🤘🤘 🤘
More compressed than RUclips demos? Weird. I’ve never had that issue, and no Fuzz or OD pedal sounds the same as on RUclips to my ears. Andy gets them close, but that Ox Box and Apollo change things some too.
It’s because of the signal chain. You have to remember, Andy is playing guitar->pedal->amp->speaker->mic->mic preamp->audio interface, etc. These and some other factors can all change the sound to make it different than just listening to your amp with your ears.
I think I’m digging Howard’s original design. It’s my favorite distortion pedal I’ve ever owned. If it’s not broke don’t fix it. I own the DLS, Belle Epoch, Tailsman, ROH & Silicon Karma Suture. Makes me think I should get some of the their other pedals that are on my list before those get changed an modded. With that said Andy your demo videos are always fantastic. I check your pedal demos before I buy anything
I have both, and I’d agree. SB setting on the original is very loose in the low end, but I really appreciate how it’s more “amp-like” in the SL setting. Both stack with OD and fuzz really well.
Hey Andy. LOVE your reviews. And doing Mother Mary by UFO/Schenker is awesome! Quick question: I'm looking at the DLS Red or the Mad Professor. Thoughts on which one is better, assuming they're the same price in mint condition?
Hey glad you enjoyed it! I’m not sure which Mad Prof pedal you speak of. From what I’ve played they offer good overdrives but nothing like a full Plexi amp in a box with all the same controls as the amp.
Currently running the silver as a base for two (yes two) EQD Plumes.... Gain stack heaven... Any way, the Red sounds more transparent, but who wants a transparent Marshall JTM. I want dirty chewiness, not sparkly chime...
I liked the Red a bit better, but Marshall isn't really in my wheelhouse so I'm not the target audience for this pedal. My next Catalinbread Foundation Overdrive purchase is gonna be the Formula 55!
I bought the red one a bit ago having no idea that it was a "mod" of the original--just thought it was a special edition color or something. I think the original sounds good too. Maybe I'll snag it and run one as a super bass and the other as super lead. Maybe not. Who cares!!!
The original had more of a classic rock vibe like I would expect to hear on a 70s rock album. The MK3 sounded well, chimey and modern. More Hifi on the MK3.
WIth this amp and settings the stock sounds much better than the orange, but I am not sure it would be the same plugged in other amps or direct to desk.
I like chime, but it sounds like the Red just has *a lot* less bass. I can't believe the bass is up all the way at 4:05 and there are almost no lows. I prefer to have a full frequency eq on tap and I can reduce certain frequencies as I choose. Edit: Watching further I see the Red sounds much better on Bass mode, but I would have to leave it there and never use the Lead mode I guess.
It doesn’t matter, the owner of Catalinbread has turned me off from anything new they release. I like my MkIII just fine. The red just sounds a bit less bassy, when they are dialed exactly the same, and a hair more gain.(again, when they were dialed the same) There wasn’t enough difference to justify buying it. I use mine with other pedals, Fuzz Face, Pharaoh, Colorsound, Pale Horse, and it adds that little something, whether a bit more presence, more volume without more gain, or just better clarity and definition.
@@elliotvernon7971 yeah I read up on it, the whole situation is just saddening. Reminds me of how zappa’s estate and all the stuff that happened once his wife gained control.

I’ve had the same issue with the original silver v.III as many stated. Too boomy and bassy in a band setting. Used it for Green Day and other covers, where I loved the overall Marshall “karrang” that Howard nailed. But I always had the bass at minimum and needed to cut even more. During gigs it was love/hate. The boomy bass was so annoying! Finally had to kick it off the board. Tried the Angry Charlie but that doesn’t sound “Marshall” at all to me. Also, I’m hesitant to buy anything more from Catalinbread for the same reasons others have expressed, even though this red version has seemed to address my tone issues!
Isn't the Red version just like the "limited edition" version that they just barely put out earlier this year? Seems pretty lame to do a LE and then go back out and re-release it after saying it's a LE only.
As per the power source comments, REMINDER: When Jimi was getting his great Plexi tones, pedals ran off 9V carbon-zinc batteries. Or, they operated only on a custom wall wart from the pedal manufacturer. Carbon zinc batteries ran down faster, so the sound of his Fuzz Face and Wah was changing as the gig wore on. The standard Boss wall wart wasn't even in existence yet in 1969.
When I want Marshall sound, I wan't the bass and slop that goes with it or it doesn't sound like a JCM800 to me.
