The Dirty Little Secret Deluxe is Catalinbread’s next phase of their Plexi-inspired foundation overdrive. The first 3 versions made waves for giving the player a real Super Lead/Bass preamp circuit in pedal form by using the same passive EQ tone stacks and utilizing FETs in place of tubes. Now with the 4th DLS, Catalinbread have gone above and beyond by not only updating the preamp to have more range on the clean and dirty side but they’ve packed the whole chassis into a dual sized stompbox including a phase inverter, power amp sim and output transformer.Plus, this Deluxe version puts all the previous internal controls on the outside for instant access to the Super Lead/Bass modes and the amp-matching Presence control.Rounding out the DLS and truly making it a deluxe model is the independent Boost section that can be thought of as one more tube in the preamp. This stage can be placed before or after the DLS, allowing you to choose more gain and saturation in this UK flavored pedal or more or less volume at the stomp of a switch.Since the whole amp signal path is available, Catalinbread gives this DLS Deluxe a dedicated 10dB line out which you can run simultaneously to your DAW or Impulse Responses.Best of all, the improved dynamics of the preamp means this Dirty Little Secret gives you everything under the hood with a standard 9V connection and it remains all-analog and handmade in Portland, OR.

Finally, Catalinbread wised up and offered the SB & SL switch on the outside!!! Hopefully they do this for the rest of the foundation series.
Yes! I'd love that extra footswitch on the SFT for Stones/Stoner on the fly!
To say nothing of either how great this pedal sounds, or how Catalinbread routinely makes great sounding pedals, it's always such a pleasure to hear Andy play. And to hear his subtle "fair use" workarounds so he's one step ahead of the censorship police. Zeppelin, AC/DC, the Stones, the dude is a walking classic rock encyclopedia and the chops are always right on point. Thanks Andy!
I really appreciate it!!
Not to mention the 90’s Alternative and Indie setlist he whips out as well!! Such a great well rounded player!!!! Any pedal I see used on CL I’m not familiar with I search out to see if Andy demoed because I know it’ll be the most thorough demonstration of what it’s capable of and if I can utilize it!
Great demo, Andy!
Heyyy Emily, thank you! 👊💥👊
The opener sounded great !
Now they just need to give us an Echorec deluxe!!!
With tap, expression, preamp and mod on the outside
Andy’s got a Dirty Little Secret....and it’s a Deluxe!
: ) you’re the G.O.A.T. Andy, Rock on!
Catalinbread does it again!
Super bass tones always sound great with buckers or p-90s💥💥
Thanks as always for giving us the nitty gritty. You’re so good as explaining the subtleties. Only thing you left out is the influence of the Presence knob. That’s definitely a big addition. It’s a big piece of what sets my Friedman Small Box apart from my DLS.
Thanks.I have three Catalinbread Amp pedals and they are all great.Next one has to be this now. Thanks !
Excellent Andy! Nice job. I love this pedal. Always have.
This is amazing! I will need to try one of these; this seems like a perfect redesign.
I remember watching the DLS demo you did in the proguitarshop channel a couple times and eventually buying it...still have it and use it! and now might have to buy this 😎 thank you andy!
This looks and sounds so cool. I wish the tightness control was external though.
looking forward to trying this one. The DLSV3 is one of my favorite MIAB.
Remembering it was a great demo, I went and watched your original PGS video to see if I heard any noticeable differences. Can't believe that was over 10 years ago.
Let’s face it - if Andy played chromatic scales on a washtub bass through the Fart Pedal into a Gorilla practice amp it would sound awesome.
Sounds great
Love ya Andy.
11:46 Subtle “No Quarter”. I dig it lol
Haha yeah “No Dime” 😆
While I now want the new DLS pedal, I want the tabs from Andy’s playing even more! Smooth. Your style always compliments the pedal perfectly.
And P.S. - Hello from Sherwood!
Oooh! It would be cool if they did a deluxe SFT with the 3 way Ampeg mid thingy.
If you're going to start with switching dipswitches to minitoggles, why not just...do it for all the dipswitches?
Goddamn it. Yet another pedal that I want. My GAS!!!!
Larvely.... the pedals good to😊.
Amazing. I love the DLS line! With all these enhancements, how would you say it compares to the Red version? I love them both but am curious if this one can get all the sounds.
I would say it’s all in there! The preamp has been updated for more range on clean/dirty sides which I believe the Red was aiming for. I really love having the ext modes, that’s pure gold to me!
@@AndyDemoshas this got a charge pump for 18v operation Andy?..or is it 9v and post boost setting adding the extra headroom?..I have the red DSL which I put after a belle epoch deluxe to get the 70s slapback sound, would you this is enough of an upgrade to justify??
It's a whole new beast and certainly different from the Stock or Red version (spec portion covers this a bit). Regarding the voltage, no charge pump and you can certainly still use 18V (the phase inverter may oscillate at high gain) but I think the redesign of the preamp exceeds the headroom of previous versions just by sticking with 9V. Thanks! @@Danielallanz
Great demo! Have you ever been on a factory tour, aren't they like your neighbors? That might be a cool video for the channel.
It's been a while but we go way back. In fact, many ex-PGS folks are at Catalinbread. Definitely need to coordinate a hang!
I know a pedal's worth my money when Andy plays one.
I have EAE Citadel, Mad Professor Loud n Proud and Stone Deaf Trashy Blonde, yet I'm still tempted by this😬
hey Andy, what were your settings and which input were you using on your DRRI for this demo? and are those the settings you typically use for your demos. curious because always sound great!
Thanks for the questions! Yes, always the same approx settings: Vibrato chan(no bright mods) Vol 3-4, Treble 6, Bass 4-5. I mic a 1x12 Creamback with a R-121 and mix in a little OX virtual 4x12 for some space.
Sounds awesome! Would love to hear it with a Tone Bender as well!
I tried a Wren & Cuff Big Muff before it and it really held up (just like the other foundation overdrives).
I'm a big fan of the Red DLS V3. I use an Odd Box as a dirty boost in front of mine for more heavy style gain. The description seems to note that wouldn't be necessary with this version. Any truth to that? I don't want to spend $300 on something that I couldn't get a similar tone stack from. Plus it'd take up more pedalboard room.
That's a good question: I would say the Boost is not like the ODD because that's a hard clipped drive and the Boost is purely clean. However, I'm a big fan of pushing an overdrive with nothing more than clean signal to get a more amp-like sound without redundant diode clipping. It's ultimately up to you if the Boost into DLS will have enough gain but I showed an example of it. Thanks for watching!
@@AndyDemosThanks for the reply. I'm going to roll the dice and buy one. It sounds great in the video and if I have tinker to make it roar with my rig, so be it!
Hi Andy, what settings would you use for some live Led Zep TSRTS tones? Cheers.
That all depends on your amp but Super Lead mode, not much bass and lots of mids. I’d say more output than preamp gain too, Page’s tone is cleaner than you think!
Hi Andy,
I'm deciding to buy a plexi style preamp pedal.
My canditates are
- Catalinbread Dirty little secret deluxe or the
- Wampler Plexi Drive deluxe
Whats your expert advice ?
Best
Heino
Hello! You can’t go wrong with either, it’s really up to your ears in the end. Both have the bonus boost channels. I feel like the Wampler is a little clearer, perhaps like a 100w where the DLS is like a 50w. Good luck!
So is the tightness control a switch, or a pot?
Trimpot
Sounds like speaker cones being shredded. 😢
Its pedal distortion...
They moved the internal controls outside, and added other internal controls lol wth
It’s ok to have some set and forget internal controls. The Super Lead/Bass and Presence are more crucial to have outside, IMO.
Tryna keep with the “secret” theme, I guess lol
Wouldn’t it be cool if one time Andy was like, “This pedal sucks.”
LOL
No Zep Andy ! - seems remiss to not go there....
Don't think I'll likely go there again unless I could guarantee it wasn't going to be blocked. Sadly, that's the state of YT today. Hope you enjoyed it anyway!
@@AndyDemos I bought the V2 off the back of your demo, so yeh. This one’s cool.
I had a cousin who had one of these and thought it was the coolest pedal ever. I just don’t like how it sounds. Nothing like a Marshall or cranked fender unit.
Will never buy a Catalinbread pedal again. My Belle Epoch died one day, tried to get support multiple times, no reply. There are better companies and the thousands I spend on gear every year is not going to Catalinbread, not a penny.
I find it very unlikely they would ignore a customer. If your Belle Epoch is within the 3 year warranty period, I’d expect a reply from help@catalinbread.com. Let me know how it goes.
Well I bought a belle epoch deluxe second hand 2 years ago and it's never let me down,.same with the dls I have...what's wrong with the pedal, maybe I can help you sort it??...I really doubt there's a fatel problem with the pedal,..I think it helps to have some workable knowledge of how to fix pedals..
There's lots and lots I don't understand about pedals since I'm mostly an acoustic player. But I have a huge question about this pedal, and all pedals that are meant to mimic the sound of some classic amp: won't the sound depend not just on this pedal, but on the amp you're using? That being the case, how can it reproduce the Plexi sound, when the signal is still going to pass through some other amp that will modify the sound away from a Plexi character?
If you’re using a Fender, Vox or even Marshall amp or boutique amp( all basically follow one of these amps as a foundation point) they all have a clean channel that can serve as your platform to build on. Howard Gee, the designer of the pedal, has a video on Catlinbread YT channel that goes into detail on “ foundation” pedals such as this, RAH( which I own) and SFT( Ampeg amp style) pedals and how to utilize. ✌🏽
