a few years ago (before they got insanely big as they're now), there's this thing in Korea: EBS- stand for Exo, BTS, Seventeen.
those three boy groups were predicted/expected to get big throughout/along their careers.
and it's proven to be right.

when we’re talking about numbers, svt definitely bigger, asia is MASSIVE MASSIVE and the hardest market to breakthrough compared to west.. there are so many kpop groups who are massive in west but wasnt big in their own continent/country.. seventeen is big in both worlds, they just recently climbed on 2nd spot of billboard 200 next to taylor swift.. they have been in the game for 9 years and was considered seniors whereas stray kids are for 5 years.. svt had more experience and achievements than the latter, and theyre kinda nearing 2-year military enlistment too
bcs their fanbase is so stable and large here in asia, their longevity is already certain

    • @arashilovee
      @arashilovee 7 месяцев назад +1

Yeah, it really depends on where the market they're more popular in. Skz (love leebit just hanging around in the bg) are more popular in the West while Svt are in Asia. Currently if we're just counting achievements, longevity and history, it's SVT.
SVT are known for their performance, I don't think there's any idol that hasn't spoken greatly about SVT whether it's about the performance or their friendly personality. They're quite notorious for being very genuine in the entertainment industry and many veterans have spoken about it too.
Honestly as a kpop fan since 2017 who has been in almost every big fandom as well as smallers ones, I've never seen a group that's so loved by their peers and coworkers like SVT has been.

  • @shdwfax1024
    @shdwfax1024 Год назад +45

I think SVT is the group every single kpop fan knows, I always say you may have that one favorite group but svt is a genre all on their own. No one does their music like them and with their long discography, everyone at some point in their life must have heard a svt song. Their older songs are a classic in South Korea, always played in variety shows, etc. You're right when you said you cannot not smile when listening to their songs, I've always had that same feeling - the urge to get up and dance when their songs come on, it's an instant serotonin boost. I 100% end up smiling listening to their songs.

Seventeen is def bigger in Asia (i think easily the biggest bg rn in Korea, China, Japan, SEA). But still pretty big in the west regardless. I mean, their two latest albums are the two highest-selling kpop albums of all time. By a fair margin too. They are also the bg that does best in korean music charts.
They tend to do not as well as some groups in international streams tho (spotify, etc). It can be partially explained by the fact that their fanbase tends to be more adult-y and less teenager-y (as they're older), so less mass streaming and such (and also explains more money to buy albums xD).
But yeah, biggest bg rn is not really a straight forward case for anyone. And it shouldn't be a competition anyway, we just out here enjoying music and content :D

    • @Noid1220
      @Noid1220 Год назад +8

Agree. They dont do well in streaming because their fans don’t really do those streaming rallies and targets. It’s such a carefree fandom that just wants to enjoy music the way they are meant to be enjoyed which is casually.

    1. They filmed this mv in Budapest. 2. SVT vs Stray Kids, yes. Svt were the 1st to best BTS’ record of the biggest selling album of all time [in Korea], then Stray Kids outsold that, then Svt outsold them again with their follow up. Stray kids are probably bigger intheUS, but Svt are still very successful their, but Japan LOVES seventeen. [I would say SVT are leading overall atm, but it’s a healthy competition]. 3. If you love funky music, svt may well be your G.O.A.T. 4. They actually launched the mic into the upper atmosphere to film that shot of a mic in space [yes really]. 5. Yes S. Coups is out of action atm, he was not with them for the mv. 6. Hoshi is so Hoshi in this mv.

Kung - bass drum, chi - cymbal, pak - snare, chi - cymbal
Also despite what a lot of new Kpop fans say, Kpop is simply pop music from Korea. There are many genres and styles within Kpop. The largest differentiating factor within Kpop is between artists/singers vs idols. So you can say I like Kpop but I don't really go for idol music. There are trends in music, but that's the same everywhere for pop music. There are certain formulas that are popular but not a standard. Writing the differences would be hard to write all completely as it's better explained via conversation but it's kindof like musicians vs popstars in English speaking countries. But with more focus on maintaining an image than the average popstar. Adele vs Ariana or Madonna vs Mariah. Mamamoo: Kpop but not idols. Seventeen: Idols and Kpop. AKMU: Kpop but not idols. Red Velvet: Kpop and Idols.

  • @___Ayie

SVT is big in america as well. They just had 11 concerts in North America and Canada for their Be The Sun tour. They've had over 5M album sales for their latest album. I think their biggest song is Very Nice (Aju Nice) as it is the most played song in various variety shows and it's always their encore song in their concerts. But I also think one of their breakthroughs was when they released Don't Wanna Cry in 2017.

These are some classic, iconic SEVENTEEN songs as well as to show their diversity (from oldest to newest):
    - Adore U (their debut song)
    - VERY NICE (agrueable their ‘biggest hit’, very iconic)
    - Don’t Wanna Cry (extremely popular intl, breakthrough song)
    - CLAP (she’s an icon)
    - HOME (i just love her)
    - FEAR (their first time really doing a ‘dark’ concept)
    - Left & Right (this song went viral tiktok, brought many intl fans)
    - Home;Run (it’s giving jazz-y broadway)

  • @kjshizniz9197

Biggest Song: Aju Nice (Very Nice)
Breakthrough Song (especially internationally): Don't Wanna Cry
    Viral Song: Left and Right
    Massive hit internationally: Hot
Massive Hit in Korea and internationally: Super
    Other Songs that got recognition:
    - Clap (internationally)
    - Pretty U (Korea and internationally, recently on Tiktok)
    - Mansae (Korea, started on this song why they got attention)
    - Fallin Flower (Japan)
Please know that they are in their 9th year already in the industry. They are bigger than what you expect. Even though they are in the industry for a while they kept on getting higher and higher slowly and organically. They are bigger predominantly in Asia (especially in Korea, Japan and China). They are also a big hit in the West but their company won't promote them much there, which is a pity, they can get more popular there if only they are promoted properly. Imagine winning Best New Artist in EMAs in 2022 is a feat even without being promoted there in Europe and not having a tour.

the reason why seventeen isn't much known in the west is solely because the Companys target market for Seventeen is not in the WEST.
meanwwhile Straykids are heavly promoted in the west...
That is the real reason for me !!
But overall Seventeen comes 2nd when it comes to the most popular groups around the World.
Well you cant just compare 3rd GEN VS. 4th GEN idol...
4th gen groups now adays focus on west (outside of korea)...

as for songs recommendations Don't Wanna Cry is an absolute icon, Left&Right, _WORLD, Rock With You (first song i ever listened from them i think), Very Nice is a biiiiig success, Clap is really good, and their debut song Adore U which remains one of my top favs. Fear is also excellent and different from their usual style, it's a darker concept. FML is on the same album as Super and is also so good. Snapshoot is a bside but it has an mv (shot by mingyu) and it is one of my top favs too. And that's the popular ones, barely scratching the surface tbh, they have so many incredible bsides that are so worth listening to, not to mention the solo mixtapes (they are realllyyyyy worth it too) and the unit songs (Cheers by the leaders, all of BooSeokSoon's music) and all the performances that give everything a different dimension.
Sorry for probably reccing too much at once, they just have a long, amazing and varied discography ^^

Thanks for reacting! Seventeen have done a lot of different styles/genres of music but this sort of funky, bright song is definitely a classic Seventeen sound.
    Kung Chi Pak Chi is onomatopoeia of a drumbeat - it's bass - hi-hat - snare - hi-hat.
The super-long guide is more comprehensive, but if it's intimidating for you I think odetosvt's guide is just as good as an introduction and only about an hour fifteen. The most current one is called "a helpful guide to seventeen (2022)".

re: your question about popularity, I think your conclusion was about right. Seventeen definitely are popular here in the States, their tours sell out and all and their last two albums have made #2 on the Billboard 200 chart, but other groups like TXT and SKZ probably have them beat, having made #1 on Billboard (some of this is just bad luck/timing - I fully believe SVT can hit #1, they just haven't yet) and had equally if not more successful tours, performed at the VMAs, etc.
SVT's had the best album sales overall this year, I believe, and that's driven a lot by their dominance in Asia, for sure - I think they're by far and away the most popular Korean boy group in China, for example. They're also probably more well-known to the public in Korea and have had more success on domestic charts this year than any other boy group. Partly that's because their subunit BSS blew up early in the year, partly because they've had more opportunities to do variety shows, etc., and partly it's probably just longevity - SVT debuted in 2015 and have always been pretty popular, so they've just had more time to gain public recognition than younger groups.
But I do think it's sort of a crapshoot to ask who's the most popular overall, because everyone has different standards (does streaming matter more, or album sales, or tours, or name recognition?) and that is the nightmare that dumb fanwars are made of.

Carats are quite frustrated with the company because SVT has a really big international fanbase, including America, they just don’t bother promoting them. Pledis’ promotion is quite lackluster and mostly focussed in Korea, to the annoyance of many😅
Stray Kids on the other hand have promoted a lot in America this year so they’ve also become quite popular!

i won't say it too much, but def seventeen popularity is massive on asia and sea, their album always sells really well, their songs also charts really well especially in korea itself (which is hard for boygroup, mostly just girlgroup and there's always seventeen in the middle of many girlgroups lol), but kinda weak on streaming because most of seventeen fans are adult who's working than freetime teenagers, so we mostly invest more on album sells than streams. well, actually i really hope that we can do more on streams and especially voting for awards :)

For seventeen, the company barely promoting them in the US compared to Stray Kids who I believed pretty much targetting the US markets recently (sorry if I'm wrong, Stay, horanghae.) but still, svt are big there. They are already well known in korea as one of the big groups, EBS (Exo, BTS, Seventeen), and as you said they are also known in Asia. They are really famous in Japan too. Nowadays it's hard to find a group that are big in all these area including their own country, since South Korea and Japan market is way more harder for some kpop idols to break through compared to US market. omg so excited for future svt reactions, especially the guide. thank you for diving into SVT! it's always so fun to follow new fans' journey into the diamond life lol
kung chi pak chi is onomatopoeia (if you know like the 'boots and cats' sound lol). it plays into the theme of the song being that music is universal and we can all make it together, regardless of language.
seventeen is in the top tier of boy groups in the US, though they don't focus much promo here/make the market a priority. but they've been doing arena tours for years in the west now, their albums always debut on billboard, they have a designated US store, etc.
stray kids is bigger than them in the US (enhyphen is really big here too i think?), but them + bts are the only boy groups that have a larger US presence currently. seventeen, however, is MASSIVE in asia. korea/japan/china make up the largest portion of their fanbase and they're pretty unrivaled there (right now). they're also a 7+ year old group so they tend to have an ~older fanbase which has huge purchasing power when it comes to albums/concerts/merch. They've sold almost 17 million albums just this year and hold all kinds of records.

I do wanna add to this actually, they are so big in america but I think what’s stopping them from getting BIGGER is the company, pledis is defo holding them back, they haven’t promoted them well in the US at all, like for instance SOS ft. marshmello could’ve been so much more bigger if they had just promoted more😭

I would say that they've had a couple of milestone songs that kinda brought them to the next level, and the main ones would prob be Aju Nice (2016), don't wanna cry (2017) and hot (2022). Honorable mention to pretty u (2016), left & right (2020) and super achieved massive success. (maybe Clap too) Though I wasn't personally around for anything before mid 2022, but I think might have stumbled upon dwc way back when it was released.
These aren't even my favorites, I absolutely love them still but they have so many underrated gems.
Aju nice (very nice) might be their breakout in Korea and it's still in variety shows and heavily associated with the group but I think hot really exploded them in the western market. I would say stray kidz is prob still bigger in the west and other parts of the world. I dont really know if bgs such as nct and txt have a larger brand recognition since my view is obviously biased. Meanwhile seventeen are the bg dominant in Korea, Japan (they're very focused there), SEA and prob China. (TXT and nct are doing well too I think) . It's also there where they do a lot of promotions, like they always have separate Japan fanmeetings. This year it was a sold out dome tour with two days each at Tokyo and osaka.
Aside from Asia it does feel like maybe their company is trying to do stuff in Europe recently. They filmed this mv in Budapest, have been going to a lot of fashion shows there and carats are waiting on the release of a new variety show (called Nana tour) which they filmed in Italy. Additionally they've just arrived in Paris to be apart of unesco (which they work with) youth convention where they will also perform. BUT THEY'VE NEVER HAD TOUR DATES HERE WHICH IS HEARTBREAKING
    Thanks for the reaction!

What I do know that they are massive in Asia. Not sure about their presence in the US and Europe but they did have arena concerts in the US.

SVT definitely BIG BIG BIG in Asia (Korea, Japan, China and South East Asia) but also in Europe and America. Whenever a member goes to a fashion week anywhere in Europe best believe more than half of the people cheering outside the venue will be carats. In the US they're doing great too, sold out all their concerts there and #2 for billboard just under Taylor. Also, they sold more than 16 Million albums in just a year this 2023 and the year hasn't ended yet (more than 5 million in a week for just the album where God of Music is from). And for this year they are the group with the most scheduled jobs. So I guess it's safe to say they are HUGE.

I was actually looking for your reaction to THIS song! Thank you! Just a few things you may or may not already know: 1) Woozi writes/composes/produces all of Seventeen's music; however, this is the first song he DIDN'T produce (though he wrote--along with other team members--the song). Two years ago he won AMA's Producer of the Year award as the youngest producer to ever receive it. Woozi is also a P.K. (preacher's kid) as his dad is a pastor in Busan. 2) S.Coups was unable to travel to Budapest to film the video due to his injury/rehabilitation; but they still included him, which I think is awesome. 3) Filmed in Budapest, Hungary (though I'm STILL stumped as to why there's such a focus on the US Post Office in Budapest). 3) The disco ball microphone really WAS sent into space via balloon by the company Sent Into Space, and they have a YT video showing how they did it. 4) During the pre-show ahead of the MV being released, Dino said the most important part of the choreo is where they point their fingers to heaven and look up as a "prayer" of thank you to "God" of Music (if there is one as they put it so as not to offend), and how we all should be giving thanks as well. There is a Tower Cam video of them performing the song live, and in it you'll see them pointing/looking up, with Mingyu--at the end--showing the audience to point/look up. If you'll watch their choreography video, you'll see it there, too. It's why they all stop and look up at the camera. Just precious!
"Kung chi pa chi" means absolutely nothing. They're words that "sound" like beatboxing, proving that you don't even have to know the words to a song...or you can sing made up words...in order to understand the music. Seventeen just proved their point of the song! :)
Something else about the GOM choreo video, just before Vernon's rap solo ends, if you watch the members in the back of the formation, you'll see them put their fingers to their forehead (how the Monkey King teleports) and do the shake (how the Monkey King duplicates/clones himself) that they performed in Super/Sonongong. Watch their other title track "FML" (goes hand in hand with Super), and you'll see the Monkey King in the mirror Hoshi looks into. FML is their way of saying the way you view Life is a matter of perspective: you can say "F* My Life", or you can choose to "Fight (for) My Life". In the end, Seventeen chooses "Fight", which makes them feel like Sonongong, a tip of the hat to Dragon Ball. Also, FML is TOTALLY based on the Truman Show. Once you review it, I'll tell you more! :)
Oh! For the record and regarding your Killing Voice reaction, the part where it sounds like Vernon says "I don't give an F" about a test, in Korea your status depends on how well you test during school years; and if you fail ("F"), you're considered low man on the totem pole so to speak. So in context, Vernon is saying he doesn't care if he Fails taking a test; being with his friends is more important. Thought I'd throw this in as an FYI.
Yes, Seventeen is big here in the States. During their world tour last year, they came here to Seattle and it was sold out within 10 hours of tickets going on sale. Granted there is a large Asian population here on the West Coast (thanks to WW2 and the Korean War); but I'm not Korean, and I adore them!

@@ces7423 Woozi and Bumzoo spearheaded the entire album's production; however, in an interview (wish I could find the link to share here, and I will when I do) with Woozi, someone commented that this was the first time a title track hadn't been produced by Woozi, and he said "That is correct." I'm sure he had a BIG hand in overseeing and contributing to the production, though. I don't see how he could NOT have say in how it went. He also said that he doesn't decide which members get what parts; the company does that. So if a member doesn't get as many lines in a song as others, that's Pledis' decision. Not his. He never picks who sings what lines. I found that interesting.

@@ces7423 Writing/composing/arranging are completely separate from the production part of a song. I can write/compose/arrange a song (come up with, put it on paper, etc.); but in order to get it recorded it has to go into production, or into the studio if you will. The first part is the creative part of a song; the second part is the actual recording of the song, adding the special effects, layering voices, adding instruments, making sure the sound levels are correct so no one thing overpowers another, etc. Hope this makes sense.

Really happy that you keep on choosing Seventeen on Chooseday😁 ( might as well make it Seventeen on Tuesdays)
Since they are an 8 year group, you can say that your schedule is full just from reacting to their title tracks, but of course their B tracks should also be listened to. Would recommend that after watching the MV, you also watch the dance practice.
SVT's choreography adds so much to the enjoyment of their songs.
As a Carat, popularity wise I would of course say SVT is the most popular ( but of course other groups fans would say the group they stan)
Anyways, recommend you check out their Rolling Stone In my Room performance ( they sing as sub units vocal, hiphop and performance)

About the SVT & SKZ thing, it’s about right. The only think I’d disagree on it tho is that “SKZ is everywhere else”. SVT definitely in Asia and SKZ definitely in the West (well, the US). Other continents such as Europe, it’s too broad to say because while K-pop is popular there too, sure, but it’s not NEARLY as big as it is in Asia and in the West. So I think you can just discount every other continent other than the Asia and the Americas. So technically, you still pretty much get the same thing, SVT in Asia but SKZ in the West. “Everywhere else” is just…too big of a stretch.

"Kung chi pak chik" is like the "Boots and pants" of Korea. You say it aloud and it just sounds like a 4 count beat. Hi, i am back. Good reaction, ty. This one was catchy. Made me smile. Everyone looked so good. Loved the blinged out jackets. Cute dance. Hope u watch the choreo for this. This was fun. Very SVT vibe. That Mic from the MV was really launched into space. Yeah, great message. There's not really anyone as big as BTS. But the following groups are doing well TXT, Stray Kids, Enhypen, Seventeen, New Jeans, Le SSERAFIM, & Blackpink. The Rose (rock band) is going to perform at Coachella as well as Ateez and Le SSERAFIM. So that's a big deal. Shinee is back and growing in Asia. &Team a Japanese group is growing fast in Asia too. They still rookies but very talented. Jin of BTS will be back in June 12 and Hobi will be back in Oct. So army will be making noise soon. Even though we have not shut up on twt since the boys enlisted. =0p Hugs. -NYC USA 2019 Army💟

For song recommendations: their breakthrough song in Korea is Very Nice (2016) and its still a very popular song there. Their first international success is probably Don't Wanna Cry (2017). It also has pretty memorable mv, so i would recommend this song to watch. Their first music show win and fandom success was with song Pretty You before both of those songs (2016), but I think that live or choreography versions of this song are much better then the mv.
Other notable successful songs with interesting mvs (and much higher budget!) are Homerun or Left and Right.

    Seventeen is after BTS now....
Album sales massive, they beat bts's sales with there past 2 album sales....
Now if you ask for numbers,
    ASIA vs WEST
Seventeen totally owns the whole asia, because korea, japan, china,Philippines these are the country which are the main focus for them all stadium tours.
Now in the west they done the america tour in 2022 12 countries all sold out .
AND THE FACT THAT SEVENTEEN HAS THE BEST musical discography out there ...this is the recent on 11THE mini album " SEVENTEENTH HEAVEN"
SEVENTEEN known as the powerhouse group force of kpop.
Now for stray kids they are more west famous in asia people not that attached to there music but yes listen to it.
Stray Kids are more famous in west then there own continent .

Well that reddit is not wrong but also is not right, you see Seventeen's biggest part of their fanbase comes from Asian countries, that is a fact, but that doesn't means they're not big in America, they've had Top great numbers on billboard (they had a #2,, imo they could've had the #1 spot, but Taylor S released an album that same week 😅) and just yesterday it was revealed they're the Top #3 biggest kpop seller of 2023 in the US according to billboard accomplishing that without stepping foot in the country last year and with no promo from their US label, what does that tell us? There is in fact a fanbase there, ofc they could promote more from time to time Seventeen's popularity is growing every comeback

I love how even though S.Coups as still recovering from his injury they made sure he was part of the MV even by putting him in the hospital, it just made it THAT much more.
SO the order from POPULARITY in groups changes a lot from what I understand. BTS is the #1 spot for sure right now. Lately it has been bouncing between TXT, ENHYPEN and Stray Kids for that #2 spot(The three groups that have been doing shorts together on YT and Instagram to show fans to NOT get crazy and that they are all friends in the end... LOVE THAT!). However, Seventeen is bouncing back along with ATEEZ. To be honest, from my point of view HYBE groups have seriously taken 2023. Starting the year off with BTS as a whole, Jimin and Yoongi, then comeback after comeback with TXT, ENHYPEN, SVT and &TEAM now ending the year with comebacks from TXT, ENHYPEN, SVT, and &TEAM again with V and Jungkook. Yes other groups had their comebacks but the HYBE groups exploded this year. I'm still super new to Stray Kids, ATEEZ and NCT... I'm more into Xikers (ATEEZ little brother group) than I am ATEEZ, but still got love for them all. My friend calls me a HYBE stan because my top 5 faves happen to be HYBE right now, but they just really interest me the most with the styles and concepts. BTS are my EXTREME ULTS and that will not change, but I love the other groups too. They are all such great talent and deserve the best. I'm still super new to this world and have tons to learn. My favorite album from 2023 so far as been TXTs' Freefall... so freakin' good. Its' got something for everyone in there.

I would say Seventeen is doing better in Asia especially in Korea, Japan and China, and Stray Kids has bigger fan base in the western markets. And this has absolutely nothing to do with the talents of the two groups. They are equally brilliant. It’s just quite obvious that their target audience is different in terms of the style of music they produce. Seventeen has always been known for their fresh, cute and easy-listening concept which is widely accepted and more welcomed in Asia than in the West. I remember when the song ‘Fear’ of SVT was released, a lot of Koreans were shocked and kinda disappointed that SVT has shifted to such a darker vibe. That comeback was generally not well-received in Korea. However, many western fans love that song and would easily name it as one of their favourites. I think that kinda shows the difference.
