I have a question. I have a 99 GMC Sierra 1500 V8 5.3L. That I am in the process of rebuilding and repairing by my self. And I just took my 4L60E valve body out to change out my all of my solenoids and while I was taking out my 1-2 shift solenoid the 1-2 shift valve came out with it as well as the 3-2 control solenoid and valve. Now my question is does this mean that the valve and springs need to be replaced on my transmission valve body or is that normal for them to just fall out when removing the solenoids? Sorry not trying to bomb you’re comments with the same question. I really just need an answer to this. I am trying to learn about this stuff but the internet doesn’t show you everything. I pray to get a response soon. I know it’s a 50/50 chance. But hey. A girl can try right?
An important step you didnt show is making sure the shuttle valves slide super smoothly in their bores. Sometimes little burrs can form in the bores which can hang up the valves and cause issues. The cleaned valve should slide all the way in and out of the bore with gravity alone (you very well may have done this step but with such a detailed video i thought it was worth mentioning)
True, good point! The fluid and grime will make them tricky to remove sometimes but when reinstalling (or test-fitting after cleaning) they should glide like a slip-n-slide on a runaway truck ramp. Should have mentioned that more clearly but I guess it got away from me.
You can tell if solenoids are working if you take a 9 volt battery and alligator clip touch it to the connectors you should hear it activating with a clicking noise.
Know your car cheat sheet... Oh my, I was just thinking the other day my rubber spinloops were having issues, and photons were being retained also. Thanks! I am going to NTB and asking for some help!
Its really not a bad as it seems. As long as you take it one little bit at a time and dont let yourself get overwhelmed by the big picture its really pretty straightforward. No single part of the job is overly complex or technical.

Just do plenty of research ahead of time (watch videos, ask on forums etc) make sure you have any special tools you need and give plenty of time for unknowns (surprise needed parts etc). Some autos are definitely easier than other but take your time, take lots of pictures and stay organized and it's doable for anyone with a decent level of mechanical skill. I'd say if your very comfortable with taking the trans out then rebuilding it shouldn't be an issue.
Older 4l60s benefited from a Corvette shift solenoid to increase line pressure for a more solid shift. We did it to my brother in laws 99 and no more slush box.
Great video. Curious, what exactly is the procedure on staking the valve for the lock-up line pressure? Also, can you stake the valve AND cut a slot in the TCC Solenoid? I'm running a high performance high stall converter and need all the lock-up pressure I can get reliably.

I'm interested in rebuilding a small block V8, similar to the one you did in the blazer, and I wanted to know how much time and money it actually took to do that. It looks like a lot of fun, I just want to know what I'm getting into before I start.
Filming the process takes a lot longer and we took our time, it was right around two months. Most of the time is spent cleaning parts, so there are different ways to clean things that also would save a lot of time. Even not having done it before it is a doable project over two or three weekends. That engine rebuild cost around $280 including paint and the camshaft kit which was almost half of that total. Spent a bit more on tools like the flex hone (~$35) but nothing too bad. Of course, if you are replacing cylinder heads or having parts machined that can get expensive quick, but sometimes it really is necessary and would be worth it in the end.
Hmm, I hadn't considered it. I suppose I could try! Since these are rendered in 4K it would take a very long time to render and upload, but it should be possible. The whole transmission rebuild would be around two hours long. Thanks for the suggestion!

Okay, I have a very important question. Are the 1-2 and 3-4 shift solenoids different? My son removed all he solenoids and set them in a bowl. I do not know which is which. Do I have to buy new ones to make sure I have the correct solenoid for the correct purpose?
Same solenoids,different valves and spring behind them,the wiring harness connectors determines which one works when the computer sends the signal to do so,the harness connectors are a certain lenght so you cannot connect them wrong!
I read a rebuild manual or two and scanned a lot of forum posts where users made their own tools and showed creative ways to get these transmissions apart or back together. That's really all I did before rebuilding the first one! If you take your time and keep track of all the parts, taking care of one assembly at a time, it really isn't such a difficult job. There is a lot to consider but the actual rebuild process isn't too difficult.

Had to order more parts so it's best to open it up first see what's busted and what's reusable. I ordered full kit before hand. Got it opened up and found bad parts that were not included. Got my last part in today. Worst part I'm working on a "rebuilt" transmission that I bought .
Do you by chance know what would cause the engagement of drive to be low? Just had this rebuilt and have went through two different converters because that’s what they thought it was. Same issues still. I go into drive and it acts like it’s not in drive until RPM is a little higher that 1300
I agree that it is an uneventful episode, but since the idea was to cover just about every part of the transmission it is still important to show it. Even with nothing wrong it is a good idea to clean everything while it is apart and check out these parts just in case.

so how did you get brave enough to rebuild a transmission? i need to know cause i'm trying to build the confidence to rebuild one myself

Abuse valves. You know when they're going out because the transmission starts yelling profanities at you.
